Trojans Fall to Irvine in Season Finale, 27-0

The Trojans ran into the Irvine Vaqueros at the wrong time. Friday night in front of a packed house at Irvine Stadium, the Cox Game of the Week proved to be not much of a contest as DaVonte Young amassed 248 yards rushing to lead Irvine to a 27-0 victory over the Trojans in Irvine Coach Terry Hennigan’s final regular season game. Although the Trojan defense, led by Josh Varkel, Andrew Dang, Joe Teresi, Drew Robertson and Michael Lancaster played well, Young’s triple digit yard, three touchdown day was too much to overcome. Irvine jumped out to a 21-0 lead at halftime, but in the second half Coach Mark Cunningham and his assistants pulled everything but the kitchen sink out of their bag of tricks. Using the Gate formation, Jordan Kemp, Sean Martin, Joppi Martin, and Rudy Svrcek ran through a confused Vaquero defense while their linemen cheered them on from the other side of the field. Lancaster blocked an extra point for the Trojans, who finish the season 3-7 and 1-4 in league.
Congratulations to seniors Reed Russell, Rudy Svrcek, Erik Ogunsanya, Sean Emery, Askun Alvandi, Jesse Rincon, Mohand Abodia, Hynh Soo Kim, Dylan Venzlaff, Lucas Houghton, Drew Roberson, Michael Lancaster, Raphael Measch, Connor McCurrie, Edson Nazariego, Nick Hillenbrand, Michael Oh, and Greg Parret on a terrific senior season and Trojan career; they will all be missed next year.
