Tough Loss for Walsh
The Bishop Walsh Spartans lost to Goretti 3 to 1. Excellent pitching performances by Kevin Myers and Aaron O'Rourke. Down 3 to 0, Ian Welch batting for Marshall Porter walked to lead off the inning. Porter re-entered the game and then stole second. Porter then scored on a single by Jason Hartman. The Spartans stranded 2 more runners in the 6th and stranded 2 more in the 7th inning. Jonathan Cullen and Nick Cathell who pinch hit for Marshall Porter singled to left field.

The loss puts the Spartans with a 1 and 1 record. The next game is Saturday at 10 am in Hagerstown at Saint Maria Goretti. The winner of this game plays at 1:00 pm against Washington Christian.



Runners Left On Base - Walsh Loses
The Bishop Walsh Spartans stranded many runners and missed many opportunities to score in the regular season ending loss to Goretti, 12 to 5. The Spartans left 10 runners on base. The offense had many key opportunities to score but could not come up with the key hit. Jason Hartman pitched giving up 8 runs. Relievers Connor O'Rourke and Ian Welch pitched to complete the game. Welch gave up 1 run in keeping the game as close as possible.

In the first inning, Jonathan Cullen singled and scored on a double by Connor O'Rourke. O'Rourke scored on a double by Eric Diamond. The Gaels scored once in the 1st and 3 times in the 4th. Diamond singled to lead the 4th and scored on a balk. Marshall Porter promptly singled to center. In the 5th, Kevin Myers walked, a single by Connor Myers, a walk to Diamond loaded the bases. Tre Smith was hit by a pitch and Myers scored. The Gaels 5th inning was the turning moment of the game. The Gaels scored 6 times to put the game in check. The Spartans could not come up with the key hit to get back in the game. In the 6th, Ian Welch collected his first varsity hit, and later scored on a Myers single. From the 4th inning to the 7th inning, the Spartans left 8 runners on base.

The next game for the Spartans is in Hagerstown at Saint Maria Goretti for the 2nd round game of the State Tournament. BW will face Saint Maria Goretti. The winner will advance to the semi-final match against the winner of The Heights v Avalon.


Spartan Bats Pound Spencerville
The Spartan Bats came alive in the first round of the state playoffs. The first six hitters reached first safely on hits to tally 6 runs in the top of the first inning. Spencerville plated 2 in the home half. The Spartans scored 5 more in the second, 2 in the third, four in the fourth and 3 in the fifth. Aaron O'Rourke allowed 3 hits and struck out 6 in 3 innings of work. Kevin Myers struck out 4 and walked one in 2 innings of work.

Aaron O'Rourke had 2 singles and 1 double. Jonathan Cullen had a single and double. Kevin Myers belted 2 triples and 1 single. Connor O'Rourke was perfect with 3 singles,1 double and 5 RBI's. Eric Diamond had 2 singles and 1 double. Tre Smith added 2 singles. Jason Hartman singled and doubled. Dylan Dunn had 1 single in the 5 inning shortened game.

The next game for the Spartans is Wednesday. This game against Saint Maria Goretti is the regular season ending game for both schools. The game is at Al Martin Field at 4:30.

The next state playoff game is Thursday at Saint Maria Gorette against the home Gaels at 5:00 pm.


First Round State PlayOff Game
The defending State Champions, Bishop Walsh Spartans will travel to Hagerstown to play the first round game of the Maryland "B" State Tournament. The Spartans will face Spencerville Academy on Tuesday May 12 at 5:00 pm.

Rally Falls Short in City Game
The Spartans got of the ground and rallied back to take the lead but could not hold off the bats of the Campers. Behind 5 to 1, the Spartans scored 6 runs in the 4th and took a 7 to 5 lead. The Campers scored 2 in the 6th and 3 in the 7th to take the game.

The Campers scored 5 runs in the second inning to take the early lead. In the home half of the second inning, Connor O'Rourke and Marshall Porter walked. Spencer Wine advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Jonathan Cullen singled and scored O'Rourke and the Spartans chipped away at the lead. In the 4th inning, the Campers had bases loaded with one out and Aaron O'Rourke was called in to put out the rally. He had a ground ball to Loffert at third who threw to home for the second out. The next batter hit a ground ball to Myers for the third out. This gave the Spartans momentum which carried into the bottom of the fourth.

Connor O'Rourke singled, Porter reached first on an error, and a Spencer Wine ground ball was booted to load the bases. Cullen singled to score O'Rourke. Diamond doubled to score Porter and Dunn who ran for Wine. Nick Cathell singled to score Cullen and Diamond give the Spartans the lead for the first time. With one out, Myers singled and Aaron O'Rourke who reached base on a fielder's choice. The Spartans now on top by 2 runs, 7 to 5. The Campers scored two in the 6th and three in the 7th to come back and win the city title.

Great effort by the Spartans who battled the whole game and provided a great comeback.


Spartans Send Fort Hill Home Early
Freshman Kevin Myers shut down Fort Hill and completes the sweep for the 4th year in a row. Freshman Myers scattered 5 hits while striking out 4 as the Spartans invoked the 10 run rule in the 6th inning.

With two outs in the first, Kevin Myers singled and scored on a single by Connor O'Rourke. In the third, Jason Hartman singled and was sacrificed to second by Aaron O'Rourke. A walk to James Loffert and a ground ball by Myers forced an error and scored Hartman. A walk to Connor O'Rourke loaded the bases. A single by Spencer Wine scored Loffert and Myers. Myers scored on a passed ball and a single by Jonathan Cullen scored O'Rourke and Wine. The Spartans lead now 6 to 0. Fort Hill scored once in the 4th. In the 5th, Wine walked and scored a Marshall Porter hit. The Spartans increased their lead to 7 to 1. Fort Hill added a run in the 6th to make the score 7 to 2. In the bottom of the 6th, Aaron O'Rourke doubled, Loffert walked, and Myers reached first on an error. Connor Singled in Aaron O'Rourke and Loffert. Wine singled in Myers. Nick Cathell reached first on an error. Porter walked and a single by Ryan Ross scored Wine and gave the Spartans the win on the 10 run rule.


Walsh Drops City Game to Allegany
The Spartans got off to a good start but it turned quickly. Aaron O'Rourke doubled in the first inning and scored on a single by Connor O'Rourke. The Campers scored 9 runs in the first to swing the momentum and ultimately the game. The Spartans had runners on first and second with no outs in the top of the second with Kevin Myers batting. He hit a line drive that the third baseman made a great play to snag the line drive and complete a double play. In the fourth, with two outs, Marshall Porter singled followed by a single by Jason Hartman. Both Porter and Hartman scored on a double by James Loffert,his second double of the game. The Spartans out hit the Campers but never got the big hit. The Spartans finished with 11 hits. Two doubles by Loffert, three singles by Connor O'Rourke, two singles by Porter, a double by Aaron O'Rourke, and a single by Jason Hartman.

Aaron O'Rourke could not find the strike zone early in the count and had trouble. Keven Myers came in to relieve O'Rourke and had an exceptional performance.


Hartman Earns First Win of Varsity Ball
Jason Hartman took one inning to adjust but then cruised through to the 7th in shutting down the Trojans of Hampshire. The Trojans scored 3 times in the first but that was all Hartman was willing to give up until the 7th when Aaron O'Rourke took over on the mound to save the game for Hartman. In the third inning, Eric Diamond walked, stole second, and scored on a double by James Loffert. Loffert later scored on a double by Kevin Myers. in the 5th inning, Diamond walked again, stole second, and scored on a single by Marshall Porter to tie the game at 3. In the top of the 6th, Connor O'Rourke reached first on an error, a single by Aaron O'Rourke, and a ball hit by Ian Welch produced an error and a run. Hartman's hit caused an error and another run scored. A fielder's choice by Diamond scored the third run in the inning to give the Spartans a three run cushion. The final score Spartans 6 and Trojans 4.

Spartans Drop First Game to the Trojans
Connor O'Rourke started on the mound for the Spartans and kept the game close. Once again the Spartan bats remained quiet and a few miscues provided the Trojans opportunities to score 8 runs. Nick Cathell picthed a scoreless 7th inning to close the game. In the 6th inning, Marshall Porter doubled and scored on a single by Dylan Dunn to plate the only BW run of the game. Kevin Myers had two singles, Tre Smith singled, and Nick Cathell added a single for the offense.


Good Defensive Effort by the Spartans
The Spartan defense played well behind pitcher Kevin Myers. Kevin was great through 3 innings against the undefeated Rams of Southern. A couple of errors gave the Rams the momentum they needed to pick up the win. Myers had 8 strike outs and scattered 8 hits. Aaron O'Rourke tossed a scoreless 7th inning. Aaron O'Rourke, Jon Cullen, and Tre Smith had the only hits for the Spartans.

Spartan Bats Silenced
The Spartans provided stiff competition for the Huskies for the first 3 innings. Aaron O'Rourke kept the Huskies off stride but Northern solved the situation with 8 runs in the top of the fourth. The Spartans broke up the no-hitter in the top of the 5th. Dylan Dunn pinch hitting marked the first hit of the game for the Spartans. Connor O'Rourke reached first on a fielder's choice and then stole second. O'Rourke scored on a double by Spencer Wine. Wine later scored on a passed ball leaving the Spartans short by 10.

Aaron O'Rourke made it into the 4th but could not finish. Jason Hartman came in the game in relief. The next game is Friday against Southern at 5 pm.


The Spartans Give the Game to the Miners
The Spartans retired the Miners in the first and scored twice to take the early lead. Aaron O'Rourke walked and scored on Eric Diamond's double. A walk to Connor O'Rourke put runners on first and second. A single by Kevin Myers scored Diamond. The Miners scored one run in the 2nd,3rd, and 4th to take a one run lead. In the home half of the 4th, James Loffert led off with a double. A walk to Marshall Porter and Nick Cathell loaded the bases. Loffert scored on a fielder's choice by Aaron O'Rourke. Diamond singled to bring in the go ahead run. Connor O'Rourke singled to score one more. Kevin Myers singled to plate the 4th run of the inning and the Spartans led 7 to 3. The Miners scored one in the 5th to trim the lead to 3 runs. In the bottom of the 5th, Loffert walked, stole second, and scored on a Nick Cathell single. In the top of the 6th, the Spartans helped the Miners score 4 runs with errors; the Miners now led 8 to 7. Connor O'Rourke was hit by a pitch and Myers singled with one out and the Spartan offense left them on base.

Aaron O'Rourke pitched the first four innings allowing 3 runs. Kevin Myers pitched the last three innings and the defense did not make the plays needed to win the game. Both pitchers pitched well enough to win.
Next game is Tuesday at home against Fort Hill.


Spartans Drop Home Opener to Frankfort
The defending State Champs opened the season at Al Martin Field against Frankfort. The Spartans scored 3 in the fourth but it was not enough as the Falcons scored 4 in the 6th to win 8 to 3. In the top of the 4th, Aaron O'Rourke singled followed by a walk to Connor O'Rourke. Singles by Kevin Myers and Jason Hartman brought in three runs to cut the deficit to one. The Spartans had Dylan Dunn and Eric Diamond walk in the 5th but could not take advantage of the walks.
Pitchers O'Rourke and Hartman kept the Falcons off balance but could not get the critical out in the Falcons 3rd and 6th innings.


Walsh Slams Fort Hill in the Opening of City Play
March 24, 2009 The Spartans traveled to Fort Hill to begin the 2009 season. Aaron O'Rourke paced the Spartans on the mound as he scattered 9 hits and did not allow any earned runs. The 3 runs scored came as a result of errors. Keven Myers blasted a Grand Slam in the top of the 7th to put the game on ice. O'Rourke struck out 2 in the bottom of the 7th to close the game.

The Spartans struck in the top of the first when Connor O'Rourke singled amd scored on Jonathan Cullen's single. In the top of the 3rd, Eric Diamond Singled and scored on a triple by Connor O'Rourke. Connor O'Rourke scored on Cullen's second hit of the game and he would score on Aaron O'Rourke's single to give the Spartans 4 to 0 lead. Fort Hill scored twice in the bottom of the 3rd and one in the 5th to narrow the lead. In the 6th inning, Jason Hartman reached first on an error and ended on second on the play. He then scored on a two out single by Diamond to go up 5 to 3. In the top of the 7th, Connor O'Rourke singled, Jonathan Cullen singled, Aaron O'Rourke walked to load the bases with one out. A base hit by Tre Smith scored Connor O'Rourke and the bases remained loaded. Kevin Myers who was hitless, hit a 2-2 pitch to left center clearing the bases and giving the Spartans a commanding lead of 10 to 3. This is the first game and win of the season for the Spartans as they take the lead in the City League.

The Spartans tallied 14 hits and A. O. fanned 9 and walked 3 in the season opener.
