21st Annual Turkey Shoot Tournament
The Susquehanna Warriors sponsored by Susquehanna Bank and Lititz Mutual Insurance comprised of boys from the Warwick Middle School lacrosse team participated in the 21st annual Turkey Shoot Tournament on Saturday, November 10th in Ithaca, New York. This fall tournament is one of the premier fall lacrosse tournaments in the country with more than 65 teams attending from as far away as Chicago, IL and countless teams throughout Canada.
The Warriors tested whether they could be competitive against the rich lacrosse heritage of Philadelphia, NY and Canada and took on the challenge this fall by stepping outside the local area to improve their lacrosse skills. In the first game, the Warriors faced Mimico Lacrosse Club, established in 1890, from the suburbs of Toronto, Ontario Canada. The Susquehanna Warriors jumped out to an early lead and did not look back as they dispatched the Mountaineers 21-0 in what turned out to be a dominating team performance for the Warriors.
In the second game of the day, the Warriors faced the toughest team they have ever played from Pittsford, New York. The Warriors battled back and forth with both teams exchanging goals throughout the game. Susquehanna held a 9-7 lead with a little over two minutes left in the game. However, Pittsford scored a quick goal to make it 9-8. Pittsford regained possession with less than 40 seconds left in the game and eventually tied the Warriors. After several back and forth opportunities, Pittsford eventually won 10-9 in a Braveheart shootout. The loss to Pittsford proved to be a great measuring stick for the Warriors, as Pittsford went on to win the overall championship for the weekend.
This loss did not dampen the spirit of the Warriors as they came out in the third game when, after giving up the first goal of the final game, went on to a convincing 12-1 victory over Penn Yan, New York. Penn Yan currently has three former players playing professional lacrosse while Pittsford has a former member playing for the Boston Cannons of the MLL and Mimico has several players currently playing Box League professional lacrosse throughout Canada. Playing against the rich lacrosse history of this region of North America was a great opportunity for the Warriors as they prepare for the upcoming spring season.
Susquehanna played together as a team and this teamwork was key to their successful tournament. The Warriors were led by outstanding goal tending by Anthony Barr and defensemen, Chad Boyer, Devin Gilligan and Mitchell Weaver. The Warriors were led offensively by the dominant play of Joshua Croyle (12 goals, 6 assists), Josh Gress (10 goals, 3 assists), Conner Brechbill (8 goals, 1 assist), Evan Crawford (4 goals, 3 assists), Ryan Deibler (2 goals, 5 assists), Adam Dodds (2 goals, 5 assists), Mitchell Weaver (4 goals, 1 assist), Devin Gilligan 1 assist and Anthony Barr 1 assist.
