The National Merit Scholarship Program further recognizes approximately the top 1% of students as National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. These students are still being considered to become National Merit Finalists and finally, Merit Scholars. Merit Scholars earn one of the 7,000 scholarships worth over $31,000,000 that are awarded each spring. Of these top 1% of students in the country, 104 reside in Nevada and 57 reside in Las Vegas.
