    COUGARS ADVANCE IN PLAY-OFFS
The Cougars won their 1st Round Play-Off game at Southern Garrett on Friday, with a score of 11-2. This takes the Cougars’ overall record to 12-4 and puts them in the Regional Quarterfinals against Fort Hill on Monday, May 11th at 4:30. The game will be played at Constitution Park in Cumberland, MD. CHS got off to a slow start with 3 strike outs in the top of the 1st inning, but scored in the next 3 innings, and added insurance in the 7th. With 2 outs in the top of the 2nd inning, Shannon Kelly drew a walk, Amanda Kline would reach on an error, and Megan Olson would drive them both home with a double. In the top of the 3rd, Jenna Davis drew a walk and was advanced on a Megan Peomroy SAC bunt. Jess Little then picked up an RBI base hit and would later score on a wild pitch. The Cougars had a huge 4th inning, putting 5 runs on the board and taking a 9 run lead. Olson would lead off with a double, and also score on a passed ball. Stef McGrath managed a bloop base hit and advanced on a Davis SAC bunt. Peomroy, Jamie LeGore, and Little all followed with singles, while Peomroy, Little, and Farr all drove in runs. In the top of the 7th, CHS would 2 insurance runs to take an 11-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th inning. Farr led off with a walk, and Kelly was hit by a pitch, both scored on passed balls, as Olson and McGrath would also reach on walks, and pick up some stolen bases along the way. In the bottom of the 7th the Rams of Southern Garrett spoiled the shut-out and notched 2 runs.
Peomroy had an excellent outing, throwing a complete game 5 hitter, with a season-high 10 strike outs. She also helped her own cause in the bottom of the 4th inning, snagging a line drive up the middle and throwing to Farr at 2nd for the double play. The infield played stellar defense behind her with Farr, Little, and Kelly all making great plays throughout the contest. The outfield had to work hard in this error-free game, with a more than saturated field; they had a hard time keeping their footing, but made the plays regardless.
Offensively, the Cougars were led by Olson, who was 2 for 3 with 2 doubles, 2 RBIs, and 2 stolen bases. LeGore and Little also had 2 hits a piece, while Little drove in 2 runs. McGrath and Peomroy added the other 2 hits to the CHS attack.

CATOCTIN SOFTBALL NAMED 2009 MVAL ANTIETAM CONFERENCE CHAMPS
The Catoctin Softball team has been named the MVAL Antietam Conference Champions for the 2009 season. They completed the conference schedule with a record of 6-1. Due to the recent inclement weather, no school in the conference played all 10 Antietam games, so the Champion was decided by winning %. Every other school in the conference had at least 3 losses, which set us at the top rather easily!
    CONGRATULATIONS GIRLS!!

Regular Season Complete - Play-Offs Begin
The regular season has come to an end for the Catoctin Softball team with a final overall record of 11-4. The play-off bracket is completed by seeding the top 4 teams in the region, and then the remaining teams are drawn randomly to fill the rest of the bracket. Our record was not good enough to earn us a top seed in our region so we were thrown into the blind draw. We were pulled as the #9 seed and will travel to Southern Garrett for our 1st Round game.
The game will be held at 4:00 on Friday, May 8th. The team will be dismissed from school at 11:45 and the bus will depart at noon.
Below are 2 links: One to the complete tournament bracket, and one to a mapquest page with directions to Southern Garrett. I know it is a long trip but we hope you can make it out to support us!!

JV Earns Tie and Win Over Linganore to End Thier Season
Congratulations to the JV Lady Cougars! The ladies ended their season with a double header against Linganore coming out with a tie for the first game (8-8) and a win for the second (8-7).
For the first game, the ladies struggled offensively, but defensively they held their own. With Linganore up to bat first, they immediately earned 2 runs with an over the fence 2 run homerun. The ladies fought back as Kristi Long struck out the next batter. Followed by the strike out and a base hit, but no hurt because Kristi Long was in her groove with 2 more strike outs to end the inning 2-0 Linganore. Linganore had a good inning against the Cougars with 3 up 3 down. LHS came back to the plate hoping to score some more, but the Cougars held them this inning with Kristi Long striking out 2 and Ashlea Brehm coming in for an easy pop fly to right. The CHS Ladies tried once again to come back with Ashlea Brehm coming up getting a nice grounder hit to right field between first and second. Miranda Baker then proceeded to lay down a bunt advancing Brehm. The ladies left the inning with runners stranded gaining no runs. The Lancers once again came up swinging in the top of the 3rd earning 3 runs making the score 5-0 LHS. Kristi Long struck one more batter out in the 3rd and 2 plays were made at first by Ashley Smith and Miranda Baker. With the 4th inning approaching, the JV girls decided to pump it up with some base hits and earn some runs. The inning started off with Ashley Smith getting hit by a pitch followed by Rachel Marlow with a base hit grounder smacked between short and 3rd. Karly Smith then comes to the plate with an RBI single scoring Smith and Marlow, Karly then advanced to 2nd while LHS tried to get Marlow out at the plate. Morgan Cole earned an RBI Triple this inning scoring Karly Smith, the Cougars left the 4th inning 7-3 LHS. The Lancers once again earned 1 more run during the 5th inning, Ashley Smith scooped a hard hit grounder to make the play at first for the first out of the inning with Kristi Long adding 2 more strike outs to her record ending the top of the 5th 8-3 Lancers. The Cougar Ladies weren’t giving up as they came back earning 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th. Ashley Smith got a double followed by Rachel Marlow with a 2 run homerun. The inning ended 8-5 Lancers. The Cougars had a short defensive 6th inning with 3 up 3 down. Miranda Baker got the first out catching a pop fowl behind the plate. Ashley Smith backhanded a grounder at 3rd to make the play at first. Rachel Marlow came in on a grounder hit to 2nd making the throw to Katie Davis at first for the last out of the inning. CHS ladies weren’t giving up so easily as they came back in the bottom of the 6thearning 2 runs. Katie Davis got a nice base hit followed by Morgan Cole earning walk. Ashlea Brehm earned a base hit with Miranda Baker and Kristi Long earning RBI singles scoring Cole and Baker leaving the inning 8-7 Lancers. Time was running out and both teams were exhausted. The cougars had a good defensive inning holding the Lancers with Kristi Long earning her 9th strike out of the game, Karly Smith using the basket catch to get the 2nd out of the inning and Marlow scooping at 2nd to throw to Katie Davis at first. Catoctin went into the bottom of the 7th wanting this game. Kelsey Hurley started CHS off with a walk to first, Lindsey Willhide was then subbed in to run for Hurley. Karly Smith was up to bat, first pitch, Willhide steels 2nd. Karly then fowls one off out of bounds down the first base side leaving Willhide at 2nd. With the next pitch dropping between the legs of the catcher, Willhide advances to 3rd. Karly then tips once off for a fowl behind the plate. Count is 2-2, the next pitch comes in, goes behind the catcher as Willhide scores to tie the game. Karly ends up earning a walk and being left stranded on 2nd with the game ending in a tie 8-8. A tie isn’t a Win, but at least it isn’t a Lose either, congrats Lady Cougars!
The JV Ladies won their 2nd game against the Linganore Lancers 8-7.
With Catoctin now being the visitors during this game, they came to the plate wanting to get some runs on the board. The first two batters were unsuccessful at reaching first, Ashley Smith then earned a walk with Rachel Marlow getting a base hit advancing Smith. Karly Smith then came to the plate getting hit by a pitch advancing Smith and Marlow. With the 3rd out being made by the Lancers, the Cougars left the inning with runners in scoring position earning no runs. The Lancers once again brought their game to the plate with earning 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Katie Davis dug deep coming in for the first out of the inning, Morgan Cole then scooped a grounder hit to the mound throwing to Davis at first for the 2nd out. Cole then struck out the next batter for the 3rd out. Catoctin came back with 1 run in the top of the 2nd with Miranda Baker getting a base hit and advancing around the bases with each pitch. Kristi Long also earned a base hit; Baker squeezed in a run with pass ball on the catcher. The Cougars went into the bottom of the 2nd 2-1 Lancers. Lancers were unsuccessful in the 2nd inning scoring no runs with Morgan Cole and Katie Davis doing all the work for Catoctin. Cole walked the first batter, but with the next 3 batters, the ball was hit to the mound with Cole fielding and making the plays thrown to Davis for the outs. Ashley Smith started the 3rd inning off with a base hit, Karly Smith earned 1st base being hit by a pitch for the 2nd time of the game. Katie Davis then earned an RBI single scoring Ashley Smith with Karly advancing to 3rd. Davis then advanced to 2nd on an overthrow by the Lancers. The Cougars leave the top of the 3rd tied 2-2. The Lancers weren’t giving the Cougars any slack as they earned 3 runs during the bottom of the 3rd inning. Morgan Cole caught a pop fly to the mound for the first out, Ashley Smith then backhanded a fair ball tagging 3rd for the force for the 2nd out of the game. For the last out, the Lancers tried to score on a pass ball behind the plate. Miranda Baker pulled off her helmet, hustled for the ball and tossed the ball to Cole to make the tag at the plate. Top of the 4th inning, the Cougars get caught with a 3 up 3 down inning for the Lancers. Bottom of the 4th, the Lancers sneak a run in. Kristi Long enters this inning to take over for Cole, striking out the first batter. The Lancers get 1 run and try for 2 more, but the Cougars hold them back as Ashley Smith and Kristi Long both get an out at the plate throwing to Baker for the force each time. The ladies now enter the top of the 5th and the Cougars rallied to earn 3 runs. Rachel Marlow started the hits with a triple followed by Karly Smith getting on base, hit by a pitch, for the 3rd time of the game. Rachel Marlow earned a walk while Katie Davis earned an RBI double scoring Marlow. Cole earned a single almost scoring Davis. Davis was tagged out on a bad call at the plate. The bottom of the 6th was another good defensive inning for the Cougars with 3 up 3 down. Ashley Smith got the first out scooping a grounder at 3rd to make the play at first, but wait… Davis throws the ball back to Smith to get the runner out trying to advance to 3rd making a double play. Morgan Cole then catches the 3rd out with a pop fly to center. Catoctin takes the lead coming back in the top of the 7th earning 2 runs to make the score 8-6 Catoctin. Miranda Baker earns a double on a fair ground ball smacked down the 3rd base line straight to the fence. Kristi Long then comes to the plate earning an RBI single scoring Baker. Ashlea Brehm also earns an RBI single scoring Long. The Cougars enter the bottom of the 7th clutching the game 8-6. The Lancers put some scare to the Cougars as they put some runners on base and earn 1 run for the inning. Long fielded a grounder hit to the mound; hesitated to throw to first and threw out the runner trying to score for the first out of the inning. Long then earned a strike out for the 2nd out; Marlow followed by fielding a grounder hit to short and catching the runner trying to advance to 3rd to end the inning. The lady Cougars ended their season with a win 8-7 over the Lancers. Congrats ladies! Keep working hard on the off season and we’ll see you next year!

    JV Loses at Walkersville
The Lady Cougars came home with a loss to Walkersville Lions 11-6.
The ladies didn’t go down without a fight; they started out with their heads in the game. The first defensive inning didn’t work for the Cougars as it was a 3 up 3 down for the Lions. As the Lions came to the plate, they scored early with entering the 2nd inning 1-0. The lady Cougars fought back in the 2nd inning earning 6 runs. Karly Smith started the inning off with a shot right behind 2nd base followed by Katie Davis with a bunt; Davis advanced to 2nd base on an out of bounds throw to first. Morgan Cole and Ashlea Brehm both came to the plate earning hits. Miranda Baker then comes to the plate cranking the ball to the hole in left center earning an RBI Double scoring Cole and Davis. Kristi Long followed Baker with an RBI Double scoring Brehm and Baker. The Cougars left the inning up 6-1. Unfortunately the Lions came back to earn 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd to make the score 6-5 Cougars. The play of the inning was made with Miranda Baker, Sydney Reaver and Ashley Smith working together to make the run down on the Lion Lady attempting to steel home. The ball was tossed back and forth several times with the Cougars closing in on the Lion Lady, the tag was finally made by Baker for the 3rd out of the inning. Unfortunately, the Cougars didn’t earn any additional runs throughout the duration of the game; however, they did hold their own until the 6th inning. The score was 6-6 in the bottom of the 6th inning and the Lions bats came to life. The lions went on to earn 5 more runs off the Cougars with the Cougars struggling to get the outs. The lions kept finding small holes in the field to rally their line-up. The Lady Cougars will face Linganore at home on Saturday, May 2nd playing a double header starting @ 11 am and 1pm (weather permitting).

Cougars Continue Comeback Ways in Victory Over Smithsburg
The Cougars kept up their “comeback” ways as they fought back from a 3 run deficit to take the extra-inning win over the Leopards of Smithsburg. Catoctin got on the board first in the top of the 3rd inning, when Megan Peomroy helped her own cause by ripping a 2 RBI double to right center, scoring Amanda Kline and Megan Olson. Smithsburg put up a 3-spot in the bottom of the 4th to take the lead, on a walk, 2 hits, and a cougar error in the outfield. In the bottom of the 6th, the Leopards would add 2 unearned runs, on an error, a walk, and a base hit, to take the 3-run lead into the 7th. CHS came up in the top of the 7th and would fight their way back into the game. Stef McGrath would earn a walk, and was followed by back to back singles from Jenna Davis and Peomroy. McGrath scored on the hit from Peomroy, and Kelly Erfurdt would replace Peomroy as a courtesy runner. Jamie LeGore then stepped in and picked up the RBI with a ground out to 2nd base. With Erfurdt, the tying run, standing on 3rd base, Jess Little then followed with a phenomenal at-bat, fouling off multiple pitches before earning a base on balls. Carly Farr came to the plate, although anxious to drive in a run, she did not get the chance to swing the bat as the Smithsburg catcher let a passed ball scoot by her, allowing Erfurdt to score from 3rd and tie the game at 5-5. Little was picked off at 3rd trying to advance on the play, ending the 7th in the middle of Farr’s at-bat. The defense held tough in the bottom of the 7th, as the game went into the 8th inning, played in International Tie Breaker style. With Little making the last out in the previous inning, she was placed on 2nd base to start the inning. Farr came to the plate with a clean count, and ripped a double to right center to score Little. Shannon Kelly followed with a base hit down the right field line. The Leopard defense made a good throw home to catch Farr trying to score and then turned a double play, throwing out Kelly trying to advance to 2nd. SHS then recorded the last out, to go into the bottom of the 8th down only 1 run. Again, the CHS defense came through, with a runner on 2nd; Peomroy struck out the 1st batter, walked 1 and gave up 1 base hit. With bases loaded and 1 out, she earned another strike out, and then McGrath came up big in center field chasing down a line drive to left-center to end the game.
Peomroy had another great outing pitching a complete 8-inning game, earning her 11th win of the season. Only 3 of the 5 runs were earned, and she recorded 8 strike outs. Helping her out on defense was McGrath with the timely catch in center field to end the game, and Sam Crabtree who is her battery mate. Smithsburg attempted to steal on Crabtree 3 times throughout the contest, and she caught all 3 runners at 2nd.
Offensively, the Cougars had many clutch at-bats in pressure situations from multiple players in the line-up. Statistically, they were led by Farr who was 3 for 4 with a double and a stolen base; she also drove in the winning run. Peomroy was 2 for 4 with a double and 3 RBIs. Also adding hits to the Cougar attack was McGrath, Davis, LeGore, Little, and Kelly.

The 3rd out of the inning caught the Railroaders by surprise as Kristi Long and Ashley Smith got the pick off at 3rd. Coming back to the plate in the 2nd inning once again Ashley Smith came up with an RBI double scoring Katie Davis. Smith then went on to score on a pass ball for the 2nd run of the inning. The cougars entered the 4th inning up 10-3. With another 3 up 3 down inning, the Cougars worked together to keep the Railroaders from gaining. Katie Davis dug deep to come in for the short pop fly on the first base line, Kristi Long went on to strike out the next batter for the 2nd out. To end the inning Ashley Smith scooped a hard hit grounder and smoked it to Katie Davis to get the out at first. Both CHS & BHS left the 4th inning with no earned runs entering the 5th inning with the score still 10-3 Cougars. The Cougars battled once again to make a short 3 up 3 down inning with Ashley Smith covering ground to make the scoop and get the out at first. Kristi Long, Ashley Smith, Lindsey Willhide and Miranda Baker all earned RBI Singles in the 6th inning. Ashley Smith also hit an RBI double during the inning with Katie Davis earning an RBI triple. Congrats to all of our JV Cougars with big at-bats for the evening and great job of working together, defensively, as a team! The JV ladies will travel to Walkersville on Thursday, April 30th for a 5pm start time.

    Cougars Down Conference Foe Williamsport
The Cougars added another tally to the “W” column today with a win over conference foe Williamsport. The win takes their season record to 10-4, while their conference record jumps to 5-1. The Wildcats put an unearned run on the board in the 1st inning, on some sloppy play by the CHS defense. They tacked another 2 runs on in the bottom of the 3rd inning, on a walk and 2 base hits. Down by 3 runs, going into the 5th, the Cougars put up a 4-spot to take the lead. Shannon Kelly led off with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Cady Baer. Amanda Kline then laid down a great SAC bunt, which would advance Baer to 2nd, and on heads-up base running, Baer took 3rd as the WHS defense did not cover right away. Megan Olson then drove her in with a double. A combination of Wildcat errors, base hits from Stef McGrath, Jenna Davis, and Megan Peomroy, and smart, aggressive base running allowed the other 3 runs to score for the Cougars. In the bottom of the 6th, Williamsport would tie up the game with a solo homerun over a shallow left-field fence. Tied 4-4 going into the 7th, Catoctin put together another rally to take the 7-4 lead. McGrath would reach base when she swung at a 3rd strike that got passed the catcher, allowing her to take 1st base, she then stole 2nd. Davis picked up another base hit and drove in the run to take the lead. Jamie LeGore helped add 2 insurance runs with a RBI double to right center, and then scoring on a WHS error. The defense would stand strong in the bottom of the 7th to take the victory, leaving 2 Wildcat runners stranded.
Peomroy had a great outing, pitching a complete 7 innings with 7 strike outs, allowing only 5 hits and 3 earned runs. The defense played well behind her, not allowing a few physical errors to set them back. Jess Little turned a timely double play from 2nd base in the bottom of the 6th, tagging a runner going to 2nd and getting the runner at 1st, clearing the bases right before the solo homerun.
Offensively, the Cougars had 10 hits against a great Williamsport pitcher. Davis and LeGore led the team with 2 hits a piece, both picking up an RBI as well. McGrath, Peomroy, Little, Kelly, Kline, and Olson all added 1 hit in the team attack.

JV Splits Double Header with TJ
Congratulations to the JV Softball team! The Lady Cougars defeated the TJ Patriots 8-6 on Friday night in game 1 of a double header.
Kristi Long pitched a complete game to get the win striking out 4. The Lady Cougars started off the first inning 3-0. Rachel Marlow crushed the ball over the centerfield fence to earn herself a homerun and the Cougars their first 3 runs of the game. Ashley Smith had a 2 run double in the 4th inning, smacking the ball down the fair side of the 3rd base foul line; all the way to the fence. Smith and Marlow were big players in Friday’s game, earning several nice hits and making most of the plays, including a double play in the 3rd inning with Smith going deep to catch a pop fly and then flipping it to Marlow at 2nd for the double play.
In game 2, the patriots won 7-2. Some highlights of the game were made by Ashley Smith, making several plays during the game along with Rachel Marlow, Kelsey Hurley and Katie Davis. The play of the game was in the 4th inning with Marlow, Davis and Hurley working a run down between 1st and 2nd and picking off the runner. Offensively, the Cougars slacked a little in the 2nd game, but Ashley Smith hit a double knocking in the first run of the game during the 1st inning. Rachel Marlow also drove in a run with a double in the bottom of the 4th. Ashlea Brehm laid down a picture perfect bunt in the bottom of the 4th. The JV Ladies will go on to play Brunswick at home on Monday, April 27 starting @ 5:15pm.

Cougars Show A Lot of Heart in Comeback Win At Brunswick
The Cougars put together a big come-back win over conference rivals, Brunswick High School, taking their season record to 9-4 and boosting their conference record to 4-1. The Railroaders came out in the 1st and sent 6 batters to the plate, but the CHS defense stood strong and recorded 3 outs, leaving the bases loaded with no runs scoring. However, in the 2nd they would take an early 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning on a walk and 2 hits. Catoctin would chip away with a run in the top of the 4th, with 2 outs Jess Little and Carly Farr stepped up with back to back doubles to put CHS on the board. There would be no more scoring from either team until the top of the 7th inning. Entering the final inning down by 1 run, the Cougars would put together a 2 out rally to take the victory. Shannon Kelly came to the plate with 1 out left in the game, and picked up a base hit, she was then replaced by pinch runner, Kelly Erfurdt. Amanda Kline then beat out an infield ground ball for a single. She was followed by Megan Olson who drove the ball to the fence in left center to score both base runners giving the Cougars a 1 run lead. Catoctin did not settle for the small cushion, as Stef McGrath, Jenna Davis, Megan Peomroy, and Jamie LeGore would all follow with base hits. Little then walked, loading the bases for Farr, who ripped the ball to the left center gap to pick up 3 RBIs and clear the bases. Kelly then came back the plate for her 2nd at-bat of the inning and added another hit and drove in a run. However, the run would not stand and the inning would end on a “coaching error” as Coach Valentine did not report the re-entry of Kelly to the umpire.
Peomroy got the win, with a great pitching effort, allowing only 5 hits, with only 1 of them coming after the 2nd inning. She had 7 strike outs, and allowed 2 earned runs. The defense played tough behind her, with 4 “3 up / 3 down” innings and turning a double play in the bottom of the 7th, as Peomroy caught a line-drive and doubled off the runner at 1st base.
Offensively, the Cougars pounded out 14 hits, with 9 of them coming in the 7th inning. Every batter in the line up had 1 hit. While McGrath, Davis, Farr, Kelly, and Olson all had 2 hits, with Farr driving in 4 runs, and Olson driving in 2.

    Indoor Throwing Moved Outside
Due to rule changes in the County there will be no "open gym" indoor throwing this season. In the past, you may remember that potential players would meet in the gym either before school or at night and throw in open gym space. This year it is prohibited for any Spring sport in any school in Frederick County to have these sessions indoors, since we are an outdoor sport. For that reason, our Febuary throwing sessions will be held outdoors. Depending on the condition of the field they will either be on the tennis courts or on the outfield of the softball field. The purpose of these sessions is to prepare your arms for the season, and to prevent injury once the season begins. There will only be running, stretching, and throwing at these sessions! Once dates and times are set, you will be updated!

    After School Workouts Begin
The Lady Cougar Softball Program will begin its preseason workouts after school on Monday's and Wednesday's from 3:00-4:00. The workouts will consist of agilities, plyometrics, and activities in the weight room. All potential players are encouraged to come, and all athletes are welcome to join. Please wear appropriate clothing and sneakers. Any questions: Please contact Coach Valentine!
