Welcome to the home of Elk Grove Babe Ruth Baseball - Youth Baseball for 13-18 year olds

Spring 2010 Registration Open for 13-15's!!!
2010 Registration Form for 13-15 Registration is now open for the spring 2010 season for 13-15 year olds. Click on the underlined title above or go to handouts to download a form or sign up online on this website. The cost is $165 for a full time player or $120 for a high school player who joins the league late due to high school sports (supplemental). You get a 22 game season along with cap, jersey, pants & socks. We have been averaging about 16 teams in past years, so there is considerable variety in the schedule. You will also get a couple of night games and at least one night practice. The league is competitive, but in a fun and positive way. Tryouts start in February, practices in March, and the season runs from April to early June. One week of playoffs, and then practice for all-stars. The first round of all-star play usually starts around July 1. Supplementals will start in the league in early May.

Forms are due by January 23, 2010. After that, prices go up $25, so get your registration in soon. Coaches are needed, please indicate on the form if you can coach or manage. A mailer will be sent out soon to everyone we know about that is eligible to play. More details about the league will be provided then.

Information and Sign-ups for Spring Season 2010 13-15 yr-olds
October 28, 2009 On the left menu under On Line Forms you will find the sign-up form for the Spring 2010 Elk Grove Babe Ruth 13-15 year-old season. This is a 22 game schedule for between 14 to 18 teams of players who will be at least 13 and not yet 16 years old by April 30, 2010. Players age 12 by that date can apply to play with the permission of their Cal Ripken League President. The league is dedicated to providing fun, safe, competitive baseball for young players with an emphasis on sportsmanship, respect for competitors, officials and the game of baseball.

The league is seeking coaches and team managers who want to achieve the goals indicated above. Applications to coach or manage a team can be found on the left menu under handouts.

The deadline for applications without a $25 late fee is the 23rd January 2010 and our tryouts will be the first 2 Saturdays in February (6th and 13th) with a Rain make up on the 3rd Saturday (20th), if needed. There are no cuts as a result of try-outs.

A Draft for coaches and managers only will be held on February 27th (location and time TBA) All players who sign up and try-out will be drafted on to a team. Players who can not try out for any reason will be randomly drawn by team managers until all players who have signed up are placed.

Practice then will begin the week of March 1st and continue until the regular season begins in the first full week in April. No games will be scheduled for the Easter weekend of April 3 and 4.

In addition to the 22 game regular season schedule, each player will have the chance to participate in the Tyler Routt "Gamer" Mid-season All Star Classic. Held in late April or Early May, the Tyler Routt Classic is a unique contest between players who in the opinion of their coaches demonstrate the will, effort and can do attitude of the Late Tyler Routt. Tyler Routt was a long time player in this league who inspired his coaches and teammates by his love of the game and desire to play it hard. He was not the best player on the field but he exhibited the best "Gamer" attitude. After his Elk Grove Babe Ruth playing days were over Tyler Routt was killed in an auto accident. The league established this all star game in his honor. It features, not the sure fire future high school players, but the players who are gamers. We have found over the years that these players tend to elevate themselves and their level of play and become very good players and even star players later in their careers. For more on the Tyler Routt Classic see Remembering a Gamer by Joe Matlen (click handouts on the left menu and select "Tyler Routt Article")

At the half way point of the season each team adds one to three High school baseball players to the roster. These supplemental players who have finished their high school Freshman or JV seasons play the last 11 games of the season. The system works so that the "supplemental" players mentor the younger players on their teams.

Once the regular season concludes there will be play-offs. The exact play-off format will be chosen when the number of teams in the league is determined.

The League will also participate in a post season all star tournament schedule. The details are to be announced. While the Tyler Routt and League Play-offs are part of the basic registration fees, the post season all stars must be self supporting with added fees to player for uniforms and entry fees.

We hope you will join us in the Spring to Play Ball!

HR DERBY AND ALL-STAR GAMES
On Sunday, April 26,2009 Elk Grove Babe Ruth conducted what we believe is a original event, The Tyler Routt "Gamer" All Star games. This event honors the memory of the late Tyler Routt, a player in our league from the time he was 13 years old to age 19. Please see the article under handouts on the left menu of this page for more information about this "Gamer". Tyler was not the best player on the field but he had a quality which his coaches variously described as "heart", "spirit" or just as "a love of the game". Instead of a mid-season all star game with the best players in our 13 to 15 year-old league, the leaders of the league decided to honor Tyler Routt's memory and the Spirit of a "Gamer" with a game between the players in the league who exemplify the "Gamer", "Yes Coach!" attitude. This years event, the fourth annual, did not disappoint. The scores of the games between the Ott and Snider Divisions on the North field and the Kiner and Gehrig on the South field were not important. Both games were well played close contests. It was evident that the league's coaches chose the players well. Each player played to the best of their ability. Good pitching, tight defense and some good offensive innings highlighted both games. Some pictures of the games will be posted here under Routt and Willeford '09 album under photo albums on the left menu. Thank you to our photographers Christie Dunbar and Rick Venegas.

Len Willeford Home Run Derby won by Tyler Blake
April 27, 2009 The 2nd annual Len Willeford Home Run Derby, named in honor of Len Willeford, owner of the Sports Shop and youth Baseball mentor, was won by returning champ Tyler Blake. Tyler dominated the first round with 10 Home Runs then got by the other Finalists, Christian Fonbuena, Tony Adams and Zach Stone with 11 homers in the 6 out final round.

Rusty McLain pitched to all 16 batters in the Derby's first round and then the finals where 30 Homeruns were hit. Behind the plate catching the Derby was Matt McLain. The Sports Shop provided a new Rawlings bat for Tyler Blake as the winner of the derby. The Sports Shop also made the Len Willeford Homerun Derby caps given to the contest participants. League President Joe Matlen, Rusty McLain and Chuck Arthur pitched an hour and a half of batting practice to the hitters in the contest before the derby.

FIELD VOLUNTEER
Elk Grove Babe Ruth is looking for one or more volunteers who can be available during the day to look after the fields. All of the board members work during the day, so the ideal person would be someone who is retired, an old "baseball guy", who wouldn't mind taking a little ownership over the fields to keep them in good shape. Clearing weeds, filling holes, watering down the infield and making recommendations to EGBR and CSD about what things need to be done are some of the tasks we envision. It would be great if this person or persons establish a relationship with the CSD maintenance folks and work with them on sprinkler fixes, watering adjustments, safety hazards, etc.

It would be so valuable to have a pair of eyes at the fields while the rest of us are busy at work. Providing advice and observations about the fields when the weather is questionable would be extremely valuable. We sometimes have to make decisions about cancelling practices or games without really knowing the exact conditions of the fields. This field rep could get litter or some other drying agent during the day to get fields ready for afternoon use, which is something we only do now when we show up at the fields around 4:30 or later. And usually the game or practice is delayed while this work goes on.

We also have to pick up chalk and bring it to the fields, but that is difficult work even for a young guy!!

If you are interested or you know someone who is, please contact Joe Matlen at 747-6252 or joemat3@comcast.net or any other board member.

Babe Ruth Alumnus awarded 2008 Babe Ruth Scholarship
Congratulations to Kyle Venegas, who played in the Elk Grove Babe Ruth League from 2003 through 2005 was awarded a scholarship from the Babe Ruth League. Kyle attended Christian Brothers High School and was admitted to UC Irvine where he was accepted into the Paul Merage School, which admitted only 150 Freshman this year.

Kyle made the Elk Grove Babe Ruth All-Star teams as a 13, 14 and 15 year old, and enjoyed mentoring the younger players as a “supplemental” player in his final season.

Board President, Joe Matlen #29, Vice President, Rick Venegas #44 Secretary Doug Penney #6 and Fields manager Chuck Arthur #37 played for the Giants in the adult Fantasy Tournament called the Melee in Mesa January 25-28, 2007. Doug, a catcher batted .333; Joe a second baseman/outfielder batted .500; Rick, first base/outfield batted .308, and Chuck a 3rd baseman only hit .250 but had a key RBI hit in beating the Dodgers. This was the first season of Fantasy camp baseball for Chuck. While Joe and Rick are second year players but Doug is a vetran of many years. Joe got brought up in Kangaroo Court for Wearing a Yankee Blue Batting helmet to giants practice ($2 fine) and Rick was rung up Writting a new book and not giving his teammates an Autographed copy.
