SNTSPY Boys Golf - Four up for Top Honor (5/21/2021  Josh Cook - News & Tribune)

A quartet of local boys advanced to the IHSAA State Finals, which wrapped up Wednesday.

It’s no surprise then that those four — Henryville senior Westin Allen, Floyd Central senior Christian McIntosh, Silver Creek junior Carter Smith and Borden sophomore AJ Agnew — are the finalists for the News and Tribune Sports Performance Yearly (NTSPY) Awards Boys’ Golfer of the Year.

The winner will be announced Thursday during the NTSPY Awards, which will be broadcast online for the second straight year.

WESTIN ALLEN, HENRYVILLE

Allen had a strong senior season for the Hornets.

“It was an experience to have, for sure,” he said. There’s a kid [Sam Davidson] on the team I’ve been playing with since sixth grade, so it was great playing with him throughout my career, and then we had a great senior season together. We’ve been best friends since second or third grade and we’ve been playing golf a long time together, so it was fun to experience all of that with him.”

Allen had several highlights during the season. Included among those was a 6-under-par 66 round in the Legends of Providence Invitational. He also earned medalist honors at the SAC Championships.

In the postseason, Allen thrived.

He was the medalist at the Madison Sectional with an even-par 72, then shot a 1-over 73 three days later at the Providence Regional to earn a spot in the IHSAA State Finals.

Allen carded an 81 in Tuesday’s first round at Prairie View before shooting 73 Wednesday to move up 29 spots and finish in a tie for 21st.

{span}”My season, it was good,” said Allen, whose plans for the future are to enter the workforce. “Towards the end of the year I definitely would say I got better.” {/span}

Silver Creek's Smith Takes 3rd at State (5/16/2021  Josh Cook - News & Tribune)

CARMEL — Carter Smith capped off an historic season for Silver Creek in fantastic fashion Wednesday.

The junior fired a final-round, even-par 72 at Carmel’s Prairie View Golf Club to finish in third place — one shot behind the individual runner-up — at the IHSAA State Finals.

Smith, who led the Dragons to their first-ever sectional title and is believed to be the first Creek boy to qualify for state, began the day tied for 13th after his 3-over 75 in Tuesday’s first round.

“Today was much better than yesterday. I hit the ball really well,” he said. “I think I hit 17 greens in regulation, but the putter was not working. I had five or six lip-outs.”

Peru senior Kash Bellar shot a 3-under 69 for the second straight day to finish with a two-day 6-under 138. The Ball State-recruit was the only golfer under par either day.

“He’s a very good player,” Smith said. “He had two very good days on that course.”

Jacob Modleski of Guerin Catholic, which finished one shot behind team champion Center Grove, also shot 72 Wednesday to finish one ahead of Smith with a 146.

Wednesday, Smith’s 37-35 round included two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars. He parred the first five holes before bogeying the par-3 sixth. Smith followed that up with five more pars before bogeying No. 12. He quickly bounced back with a birdie on 13.

“Thirteen’s a pretty long par-5 and I absolutely nuked my driver. I was mad about the 3-putt on 12 and kind of hit out of my shoes,” said Smith, who was able to get up and down for birdie.

He then parred the next four holes before finishing with a birdie on the par-5 18th.

“My putt barely went in, but it was good to finish on a birdie and go out on a good note,” Smith said.

He hopes to carry that momentum into next season, when the Dragons set their sights on the big trophy.

“The goal is to make it (to state) as a team, first of all, and try to compete for a state title as a team,” Smith said. “For myself, I just want to try to compete and do better than I did this year and win.”

Smith was the top finisher of the four area individuals competing at state. The three others also made positives moves Wednesday.

Henryville senior Westin Allen, who was tied for 50th after the first round, fired a 1-over 73 to move into a tie for 21st.

Allen, who played the back nine first, birdied two of his first four holes and was 2-under before back-to-back bogeys on 17 and 18 brought him back to even. On the front nine, he parred everything but No. 2, which he bogeyed.

“It was a much better day for Westin,” Hornets coach Robin Embry said. “He seemed comfortable the entire day. The wind was down, his indecision was down, and his score was down. I was very happy he was able to experience the State Finals. He carried himself well and represented himself, his family, our team, school, and community very well! He and Sam (Davidson) led us to a memorable season. It’s not often we have our team qualify for regional and have representation at the State Finals — we did both this season! We’re really going to miss him and Sam next season. They are two very good golfers and more important, quality young men!”

Floyd Central senior Christian McIntosh and Borden sophomore AJ Agnew were two of seven golfers who tied for 33rd overall.

McIntosh, who was tied for 50th following the first round, shot a 76 (38-38) to finish with a two-day total of 157. Starting on the back nine, he birdied 13 before three straight bogeys. On the front nine, McIntosh bogeyed the par-4 second before birdieing the par-5 third. He then double-bogeyed the par-5 seventh.

Meanwhile Agnew, who was tied for 68th after the first round, bounced back to fire a 1-over 73.

Beginning on the back nine, he sandwiched birdies on 11 and 13 around a bogey on 12. Agnew ran into trouble on 16, which he triple-bogeyed before rebounding to birdie No. 18. On the front nine, he birdied the par-5 third before double-bogeying No. 5. Agnew, though, birdied No. 8 before closing out his 36 with a par on No. 9.

Four Locals Qualify for State Finals (5/11/2021  Josh Cook - News & Tribune)

HENRYVILLE — Thursday was a tough one for teams from Clark and Floyd counties at the Providence Regional.

However, it was a great day for area individuals.

While none of the local teams qualified for next week’s IHSAA State Finals, although a couple were close, Silver Creek junior Carter Smith, Floyd Central senior Christian McIntosh, Borden sophomore AJ Agnew and Henryville senior Westin Allen claimed four of the five individual at-large berths for the two-day event.

Fourth-ranked Center Grove carded a collective 295 at Champions Pointe Golf Club to take home its sixth straight regional title. Fifth-ranked Bloomington South was second with a 300 while No. 17 Franklin took third with a 307 — two shots better than No. 19 Floyd Central and five shots better than No. 9 Silver Creek — in a stacked field.

The top three teams, plus the five best finishers from non-qualifying squads, advance to state, which is scheduled to be played Tuesday and Wednesday at Prairie View Golf Club.

Franklin’s Damon Dickey earned medalist honors with a 3-under-par 69 — one shot ahead of Smith, two ahead of McIntosh, three ahead of Agnew and four ahead of Allen — on a course that was playing more difficult than normal after several days of rain.

“It was wet,” Allen said. “It was definitely playing long. They played some tees back farther than I thought they were going to as well. I liked how they made it harder. Obviously it was harder, look at the scores that were posted today. Usually at regionals there’s four or five people in the 60s, today there’s only one, so it was definitely harder.”

Smith, the medalist at Monday’s Providence Sectional, had a round that exampled the course’s perplexity. It included six birdies, two bogeys and one double-bogey.

“It was very up and down,” Smith said of his 34-36 round. “I birdied the first hole, fell back to even on hole four, then I got hot and got quite a few birdies. But a couple bad swings hurt me. I went out-of-bounds on nine and had a double-bogey on 13. It was just really back-and-forth all day. I’m just glad to keep it going.”

He was disappointed, however, that his team won’t be joining him at Prairie View.

“I had high hopes for our season this year,” Smith said. “It’s frustrating to see the season come to an end as a team, but we’re going to come back next year strong.”

Cody Coleman added a 79, Luke Graston an 81 and Seth Hooe an 82 for the Dragons, who won their first-ever sectional title Monday.

“Three (hundred) twelve was a little high, but overall I can’t complain,” Silver Creek coach Matt Graston said. “We started the season unranked and moved all the way up to nine. That’s big for our program. Next year is going to be even better. We’ve got one big goal in mind and that’s win state next year. I hate to look forward, but that’s a goal we had this year and didn’t quite get there. Hopefully Carter can go to state and win state as an individual, but we’ve got a lot of talent coming back. ... It’s a great group of kids we have and we had a great time this year with it.”

McIntosh tied with Center Grove’s Brandon Heffner for third place. His 35-36 round included three birdies and two bogeys.

“It was a pretty clean round, a lot of pars,” McIntosh said. “All except for one hole, I hit it OB on six, but other than that I thought I played pretty good. All the hard work paid off, I guess.”

Sam Stewart and Ben Howell each fired 79 while Judson Dukes carded 80 to round out the team score for the Highlanders, who had qualified for state in 2018 and 2019.

“It’s disappointing,” McIntosh said of not advancing as a team. “We played our best round of the year, so we really fought out there for sure. We could’ve definitely cleaned up two shots somewhere for sure and got out, so it’s bittersweet.”

Agnew made history with his round, becoming the first Borden boy to qualify for the state finals.

“It means everything to me,” he said. “It’s always been a goal to make it to state for high school. I knew that I had a good shot at it this year, just played my best and I’m happy it turned out the way I wanted it to.”

Agnew’s 36-36 round included one birdie (No. 11), one bogey (No. 18) and 16 pars.

“It was pretty boring actually, a lot of pars and a couple putts dropped,” he said.

“He was a little bit shaky on his first tee shot, kind of flared one right, that kind of made (assistant coach) Trevor (Wagoner) and I a little bit nervous, but he hit one center of the green (after that) and from there he two-putted for par. From there, we knew that he would be steady,” Braves coach Duane Potts said of Agnew, who also plays for the Borden baseball team that will appear in the Class A semistate Saturday. “He usually starts off slow. He’s never a guy that starts off lightning fast, but he’s just a guy that goes out and hits greens, which is what you have to have in high school golf. You have to hit greens and try to two-putt and give yourself looks at birdies. And that’s what he did.”

Allen’s round included four birdies, 10 pars, three bogeys and one double-bogey.

“It was definitely rough,” he said. “I hit the ball very, very well, but the greens really killed me. I only made two putts inside of 10 feet. It was a rough day on the greens.”

Sam Davidson (86), Trenton Vires (105) and Caleb Harter (109) rounded out the team score for the Hornets, who finished third in Monday’s Madison Sectional.

“These young men represented themselves, (their) families, team, school, and community very well. Our (numbers) three, four and five (players) really struggled to score on our first nine [the back nine at Champions Pointe], probably due to some nerves. Sam played steady, but trouble on his ninth hole inflated his score a bit,” Henryville coach Robin Embry said. “But we’re all very happy for Westin. His putter was fairly cold, but he still fought to card a very good score and advance to the State Finals. He’s been playing very well the past month and we’re hoping he has two great days this coming week. Westin and Sam (Davidson) have had great senior seasons, really careers, and have been a pleasure to coach! I’m looking forward to seeing Westin play in his first State Finals!”

Two other area players wrapped up their careers with solid rounds. New Albany’s Ryan Crum carded a 78 and Jeffersonville’s Charley Williams fired an 80.

Allen Helps Hornets to Regional Berth (5/1/2021  Josh Cook - News & Tribune)

MADISON — Led by medalist Westin Allen, Henryville finished in third at Monday's Madison Sectional.

Allen fired an even-par 72 at Sunrise Golf Course to lead the Hornets, who carded a collective 343.

Austin won its first sectional title with a 320, two shots ahead of the host Cubs. The Eagles, Madison and Henryville advance to Thursday's Providence Regional.

"I’m very happy for what these young men have accomplished. We’re very pleased to have earned the opportunity to represent our school and community at the IHSAA regional," Hornets head coach Robin Embry said. "Westin continues to play very well and it was great to see him become the sectional medalist!"

Sam Davidson added a 79, Trenton Vires a 90 and J.D. Michael a 102 to round out Henryville's team score.

"Sam carded another really good round. He and Westin have had very nice senior seasons," Embry said. "Trenton’s improvement has been consistent and he shot another good score today. The biggest difference for us today — we got a competitive fourth score. We knew if we could get something near 100 we’d be in the hunt. Last week it was Caleb (Harter), carding 50 as we posted 168. Today it was J.D.! Our third and fourth scores were very good today. We didn’t play particularly well on the front. However, knowing we were just a stroke from third, gave us confidence. We played the back well last week and again today."

Xander Morris fired a 90 to lead Charlestown, which placed ninth.

MADISON — Led by medalist Westin Allen, Henryville rolled to victory in a four-way match Tuesday afternoon.

Allen fired a 1-under-par 35 at Sunrise Golf Course to pace the Hornets, who carded a collective 168. Switzerland County was second with a 190 while Shawe Memorial shot 193 and Southwestern 194.

Allen’s nine-hole round included two eagles, four pars and three bogeys.

Sam Davidson added a 41 and Trenton Vires a 42 while Caleb Harter carded a 50 to round out the team’s score.

“We were happy to get a chance to play our sectional course,” Henryville coach Robin Embry said. “Westin continues to play very well. He carded two eagles today. After a tough start, Sam played well the last five holes. Trenton fired a nice round and JD (Michaels) continues to improve. I was happy for Caleb. He finally tried a bit different strategy and posted his best round of the season. We’ve got some work to do the rest of this week and then see where we are Monday (at the sectional).”

Allen Earns Medalist Honors, Creek Takes Second (5/29/2021  Josh Cook - News & Tribune)

HENRYVILLE — Henryville's Westin Allen earned medalist honors while Silver Creek placed second at Saturday's Legends of Providence Invitational.

Third-ranked Center Grove claimed the team title with a collective 292 — eight shots better than No. 10 Silver Creek. Seventh-ranked Bloomington South (304), 11th-ranked Columbus North and No. 15 Floyd Central (327) rounded out the top five.

Meanwhile Allen, a senior, fired a 6-under-par 66 at Champions Pointe Golf Club to take top individual honors.

"Westin has been playing great the past few weeks and this was an awesome round!" Hornets head coach Robin Embry said. "I'm very happy for him!"

Sam Davidson added an 81 for Henryville.

"Sam played really well, but stacked up a few too many bogeys on the back," Embry said. "Our two seniors have played well all season!"

Carter Smith led the runner-up Dragons with a 68 while Cody Coleman carded a 71. Seth Hooe (78) and Luke Graston (83) rounded out Creek's team score.

"All of our guys had some shots here or there that they left out on the course, but overall we are very happy with 300 and second place," Dragons coach Matt Graston said. "We have to remain mentally positive and confident in the way we are playing right now. We are about spot-on where we wanted to be and about the time we wanted to be there. It’s golf, though, so anything can happen at any time to change things around, especially if you don’t keep working at it. We have a little fine-tuning to do with each player, but the guys are working hard on things to get there by postseason. They seem pretty locked-in on their goals."

Nathan Smith led the fifth-place Highlanders with a 78 while Ben Howell and Gabe Lamb each added an 82. Jacob Bowman fired an 85 to round out Floyd's score.

Borden placed eighth in the team race with a 339. The Braves were paced by sophomore A.J. Agnew, who fired a 1-over 73. Branson Wagoner added an 84 for Borden.

New Albany was led by Ryan Crum's 78 while freshman Blaine Hamilton added an 88.

John Walthers paced the host Pioneers with a 90..

Highlanders earn return trip to State Finals

6/6/2019 Craig Pearson (News & Tribune)

HENRYVILLE — Humid conditions, temperatures in the mid-80s and soft grounds, thanks to Wednesday evening's rains, made for a grueling day on the course for Thursday's Providence Regional at Champions Pointe Golf Club.

Floyd Central, seeking the seventh regional title in the proud history of the program, came up short in that quest but compiled a score of 301 — 10 shots behind victorious Center Grove — that was good enough for second place and a 19th overall trip to the IHSAA State Finals.

"That was our goal the whole year. We still have some goals we want to meet," said junior Reece Compton, who led the Highlanders with a 1-over-par 73 that tied for fifth on the overall individual leaderboard.

The eighth-ranked Highlanders are hoping to improve next week upon last year's 10th-place finish at state. Harrison Eades, the lone senior in the Floyd Central lineup, shot 74 for his best-ever round at Champions Pointe.

"I went double [bogey], bogey to start on 1 and 2," Eades said. "I kind of shot myself in the foot there."

But Eades birdied the par-3 fourth and the par-5 sixth to regain his footing.

"My putting was working well for me today. I just put myself in tough situations. The chipping could have been better today," he said.

Sophomore Christian McIntosh shot 77 and Floyd Central's fourth score came from Ben Howell. The freshman posted a 77 and was 2-over going into No. 16 before finishing with three straight bogeys.

"Ben Howell came up huge," Floyd coach Brett Eades said. "He shot 90 in his qualifying round. He and [fellow freshman] Max Zoeller had to compete [for the fifth spot]. It's the difference in us getting second or third place."

It was far from the best day for New Albany senior Nolan Keeler in what he hoped would not be his final round as a Bulldog.

Keeler was shooting for his first state-qualifying regional round, but saw his career — and stellar senior season — come to a close Thursday with a 78. Keeler was sitting at even-par through his first eight holes and 1-over following the back nine. However, he saw his fortunes take a sour turn.

"He's put a lot of time and effort into it and preparing for this round," New Albany coach Rick Belcher said. "It started with a lapse of focus on No. 1. He had a 15-foot birdie putt and three-putted. He missed it short, uphill. You're thinking birdie on No. 1 and he gets bogey."

Keeler then ended up with a double-bogey on the par-3 second.

"For him, it's a pretty short iron and it looked good [off the tee]," Belcher said. "He came up short and went in the bunker. It plugged into the lip just below and he had to take an unplayable out of there. He went from even-par to three holes later, 4-over par. From then on he's pressing. With seven holes to play, he gave a couple more back on those next couple holes trying to press."

Keeler will go on to play at Marian University next season.

"He's worked so hard. He's a great player. He's going to be fine. He's going to do well in college. I told him you've got four more years. It'll sting for a few days," Belcher said.

For Compton, he started with a 34 on the front nine and was in position to post one of the three lowest scores of the day before having some trouble at the finish.

The key to his round was the final four holes of the front nine.

"I had a two-putt birdie on the par-5 sixth. On [No.] 7, I get in some trouble and got up and down. On [Nos.] 8 and 9, I made a 12-footer and then an 18-footer for birdie. So I was 3-under on those holes," Compton said. "I hit in the water on 10 and managed a bogey on that. I birdied 16 to get to 2-under for the day and then struggled in. I doubled 17 and bogeyed 18, so it was a disappointing way to finish."

Providence senior Caleb Popp also saw his prep career come to a close with an 88 after recovering from a disastrous start.

"He takes a triple on the first hole and a 10 on three, so he's 8-over after three holes and still comes back and shoots a 45. On the backside, he gets some steam up," Providence coach Victor Beeler said. "It's a grueling day. I was proud of him. He didn't quit, kept on playing. He's been a great leader for our team all year. We're playing one senior, three sophomores and a couple freshmen. He's given our program someone to look up to."

Henryville's Westin Allen shot 78.

"Westin played 15 holes very well," Hornets coach Robin Embry said. "However, the doubles at three, five and nine really cost him. He’s a quality young man and had a solid season. There’s no question, he’s one of the top players in the area. But there’s room for improvement with him and his teammates. Hopefully, they’ll work to have a really good season next spring."

"Placing fourth is getting old," Henryville coach Robin Embry said. "We felt we had a chance at one of the top three, but didn’t score quite well enough. Everybody carded something near their average, which is good. However, to advance to the regional, we needed a bit better than average."

Allen shot 38 on the back nine after struggling on the front nine.

"We’re happy Westin advanced and look forward to him playing in the regional Thursday," Embry said. "We have a good group returning next season since we have only one senior. Yet, his scores will be a challenge for us to replace. Clayton’s been a pleasure to coach and he, and his teammates, have represented themselves, team, school and community very well."

Behind Allen's 7-over-par 79, the Hornets carded a collective 352 — 44 shots ahead of runner-up South Central and 70 better than third-place Borden.

Clayton Fields, the individual runner-up, added an 84 and Sam Davidson, who finished fifth, fired a 90 for Henryville, was 18 shots better on the back nine than the front nine.

"We played very well on the back. With the wind and tough rough, Champions Pointe presented a difficult test. We only led by five after the front nine and then settled in to play well on the back. I'm really happy for Westin, Clayton, and Sam to earn a spot on the all-conference team. We'll keep working at it in hopes to play very well these last few weeks."

Allen, Fields and Davidson were joined on the All-SAC team by Lanesville's Griffen Reynolds (85), South Central's Bryce Lewis (89) and Borden's Hayden Smith (92). Embry, meanwhile, was awarded SAC Coach of the Year.

Boys' Golf Preview: Highlanders look to return to state
4/5/2019 Josh Cook (News & Tribune)

Golf season has teed off in Southern Indiana.

Teams throughout Clark and Floyd counties already have started hitting the links this week.

With that in mind, here are five — not fore! — big questions entering the season.

1. CAN FLOYD CENTRAL MAKE IT BACK TO STATE?

In a word, yes. The Highlanders return four of their top six players from a team that won its second straight sectional title, finished second in the regional and took 10th at the IHSAA State Finals.

“I have extremely high expectations,” second-year Floyd coach Brett Eades said. “We’ve got a good mix. We’ve got some experience and then we’ve got some young guys coming in.”

The Highlanders lost Dylan Zink and Jack Lilly to graduation, but return senior Harrison Eades, junior Reece Compton and sophomore Christian McIntosh from their state lineup. Also back is sophomore Judson Dukes, who was the team’s sixth man last year.

“They feel like they left some things on the table and they want an opportunity and a shot to show the state we’re a little bit better than we were last year,” said Eades, whose team was ranked No. 14 in the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association preseason Top 20 poll.

Harrison Eades, the coach’s son, took third at the Providence Sectional last year with a 3-under-par 69.

“I’m looking for Harrison to be a great leader this year;” his father said. “He’s doing great so far; it’s starting out in practice being very competitive and challenging the younger guys.”

Brett Eades expects freshmen Ben Howell and Max Zoeller to contribute for the Highlanders, who will try for their third straight sectional title and their 16th in 17 years.

“That’s obviously one of our goals, we want to win another sectional championship and we want to compete again for a regional championship again this year,” Eades said. “But we obviously want to keep our priorities in line and win them as they come.”

Eades has strengthened his team's schedule in hopes of preparing it for a deep postseason run. It begins with Saturday’s Floyd Central Invitational. The field includes No. 2 Evansville North and No. 8 Castle.

“The experience of playing a much stronger schedule, we’re hoping it will benefit us in the long run,” Eades said.

2. FLOYD CENTRAL IS THE BEST TEAM IN THE AREA, SO WHO'S THE SECOND-BEST SQUAD?

Probably New Albany. The Bulldogs graduated two starters from a team that finished second — by 29 shots — to Floyd Central in the sectional. Returning to lead the way will be seniors Nolan Keeler and Caiden Walters along with sophomore Ryan Crum. Keeler carded a 75 and Crum a 79 in the sectional last year.

3. WHICH TEAMS ARE ON THE RISE?

Just based off the overall success of most of its athletic programs, we’ll go with Silver Creek as one. Coach Matt Graston lost three of his top five players from a team that finished fourth — nine shots behind Providence — in the sectional last season. The Dragons, though, do return senior Bryce Crutcher, an individual regional qualifier last season, and junior Jeremy Harper. With those two back, and some younger players coming up, the Dragons should contend for a regional berth.

Borden, which finished 10th at the Providence Sectional, should also be better. New coach Duane Potts has four players back from last year and four incoming freshmen.

New Washington, which returns its top four players from a team that took 10th at the Madison Sectional, should also be improved.

4. WHICH TEAM WAS HIT HARDEST BY GRADUATION?

Providence. The Pioneers lost four starters from a team that finished third in the sectional and ninth in the regional. Only senior Caleb Popp returns. Coach Victor Beeler is looking for several of his younger players to step up this season.

5. WHICH INDIVIDUALS COULD CONTEND FOR SPOTS IN THE REGIONAL?

In addition to any of those players already mentioned, if their teams don't advance, several could qualify for the regional if their squad does not.

Included among those are Henryville sophomore Westin Allen and New Washington junior Fernando Diaz, both of whom advanced to the regional as individuals last year. Jeffersonville senior Harrison Paul and sophomore Charley Williams could contend for spots too if the Red Devils don't make it out of the sectional.

• POTTS SAYS: “I’m very optimistic that Borden golf will have a better year than last. While I still consider our program to be in a building year, I think that with the number of returning players we have accompanied with some incoming freshman that bring some talent, Borden has some good years of golf ahead of us.  [We] just have to have our players continue to establish personal goals for themselves to meet in order to help our team continue to become more competitive in matches."

• CASEY SAYS: “We look forward to instilling a love for the game of golf in our guys. We had a great turnout this year for the team, as we have 11 guys on our team, which is a lot for a 1-A boys' golf team. • OUTLOOK: The Hornets lost three of their top six players from last season, but return their Nos. 1-3 players from sectional in Allen, Davidson and Fields.

• EMBRY SAYS: “We're disappointed our numbers are down, we only have four players. However, the four we have will represent themselves, their families, the community and the school well. We expect Westin to continue as one of the top players in the area. In addition, Sam and Clayton are expected to post good scores. Also, we think Cameron Miller will have a much-improved season. Hopefully, we'll improve throughout the season and be competitive in all of our events. We'd like to get another player or two to join us, but regardless, we could be pretty good by season's end."

• BELCHER SAYS: “I think we will be competitive. We have a solid group at the top in Nolan, Caiden and Ryan. We just need to find some scoring and consistency at the 4 and 5 spots. We're going to need a couple of guys to step up, work hard and fill those spots."

NEW WASHINGTON

• HEAD COACH: Bret James (eighth season).

• LAST YEAR: Finished 10th at Madison Sectional.

• LAST YEAR: Finished fourth at Providence Sectional.

• KEY DEPARTURES: Garred Perronie, Hunter Popp, Tucker Everett.

• RETURNING PLAYERS: Bryce Crutcher (Sr.); Jeremy Harper (Jr.).

• OUTLOOK: The Dragons lost their Nos. 2, 3 and 5 players from a team that finished nine shots behind Providence at the sectional. "We lost a lot of experience and scoring from last year’s team, but we have several players that have put in a lot of time and effort and are ready to step in and fill spots," Graston says.

• GRASTON SAYS: “Our goals are to fire some good numbers by conference tournament and postseason play. As we get more experience throughout the year, we expect to be in that situation. We traditionally start the year slow but hopefully we’ll peak at the right time for those tournaments and fly in under the radar to surprise some teams."
