Registration Now In Progress -- Final Session Moved to February 13th
After three registration sessions, more than 380 families have already signed up for Brandywine Little League in 2010. Due to the predicted Winter Blizzard this Saturday, our final day of registration has been rescheduled to Saturday, February 13th between 9 AM and noon at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Foulk Road next to Brandywine High School. Don't let the weather - or any other excuse -- prevent your kids from having fun with more than 600 other children and their families this season. Go to Registration Details to get all the information needed for Spring sign-ups. Please stay tuned to our website for updates.
Parents and Boosters Meeting Postponed
The Parents and Boosters meeting, scheduled for Monday, February 8th at 7PM at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, is postponed. This meeting will be rescheduled during the week of February 14th, pending conference room availability. Updated information will be provided as soon as it is available.
There's Still Time to Become a Brandywine Little League Sponsor
What could be cooler than seeing the name of your business (or family) on the back of a team jersey in Brandywine Little League? Each year, every Brandywine Little League team is referred to by the Sponsor's name. No Red Sox or Yankees. No Lions or Tigers or Bears. It's your company the kids are playing for and every BLL family appreciates your support. In fact, the support of our sponsors covers about 20% of our league's operating budget -- which along with other fundraising activities allows us to charge less than half our actual cost in fees each year. This year we will have 58 teams playing in seven divisions. Please join us and show your support for a league that has been part of North Wilmington and Brandywine Hundred for over 40 years. Contact Dick Moore for more details about sponsoring or click here to view and download the 2010 BLL Sponsor Package.
Volunteers Needed to Fill Two Open Board Positions
Brandywine Little League is looking for a passionate individual to become our Sponsors Director. This Board level position is responsible for securing business sponsors for each of our league's teams. The revenue generated from team sponsors directly covers about 15% of the league's operating budget each season. The Sponsor Director is responsible for collecting payment on a timely basis. Sponsors must also be recruited for the annual Tag Day, another important league fundraiser.
The league is also looking for a Player Development/Fall Ball Director who will help identify and promote player development opportunities for BLL players with an emphasis on off-season programs suitable for all ages and abilities. This person will be expected to help promote local clinics, summer baseball camp opportunities, organize our Fall baseball program and assist during tournament play.
If interested, please contact John Faulkner, BLL President (see Directory)
Help Our Concession Operation, Please!
Here's a great opportunity to meet families from across the league and provide very important -- even critical -- help to Brandywine Little League: Volunteer as a Concession Stand Coordinator. With two complexes, we now operate two concession stands. While "helping" out during the game is a requirement of parents of teams that play at either complex, we need to expand our cadre of Concession Stand Managers.
Last season five or six individuals did an incredible job opening, setting up and closing the concession stand at Dyer all season (and at the New Complex for about half the season). We simply need more people to share the load. What do you have to do? Arrive about 5PM and open the concession stand. Get hot dogs and pretzels cooking. Turn on the french fryer (at Dyer only). Then get ready to serve the crowd at 5:30. During the game, you provide oversight to the parent volunteers who handle the orders at the windows. Towards the end of the evening's activity, begin to close things down, clean up, restock the soda for the next night in the coolers, empty trash and lock up. The Concession Manager is responsible for counting and turning in cash receipts for each evening.
Sound like you could do it? Ideally, each Coordinator would be responsible for the concession stand's operation for one night (or part of Saturday) each week during the season. Our season lasts ten weeks. Please help share the load. Contact Janice Steffin or John Faulkner to express your interest or learn more. We will work around your schedule!
BLL Family Needs Our Assistance
On Saturday, January 16, the Brandywine Little League Board learned that Jordan Lawson, a 14-year old player in our league, had been diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma. Jordan had surgery on January 13th to remove any residual cancer cells from the original point of surgery back in December. His doctors have removed the bulky or accessible lymph nodes, performed a bone marrow test and installed a port for his chemo. Jordan started chemotherapy the day after his latest surgery and will undergo treatment for 51 more weeks. I'm sure many of you know Jordan. He was a member of the Brandywine Little League's District winning All-Star team in 2007 and the entire family have been tremendous supporters of BLL for many years. Now, we can help with meals, offers of other needed support, or simply prayers and good wishes for his recovery. You can track Jordan's progress on the family's CareCalendar website. Once you enter the site, use code 2773 to enter the Lawson Family Page. The website includes a calendar for delivery of family meals (and information about Jordan's favorite foods). Of course, as we learn more -- I will share additional information as appropriate. Please e-mail me directly to receive additional contact information. I urge everyone in the Brandywine Little League family to keep the Lawson's in your prayers. Jordan has proven many times the type of competitor he is and I'm sure he'll demonstrate that same attitude now.

BLL Goes to Bat for Jordan; Also Offers Bone Marrow Registry Info
During each of our Registration sessions, Brandywine Little League conducted a voluntary collection to provide a financial donation to the Lawson family to help cover some of the the miscellaneous expenses they will likely incur over the next year of chemo treatment for Jordan. Thanks to the generosity of the Brandywine Little League community, more than $700 has already been collected. We will continue this effort during our final registration session and all funds collected will be turned over to the Lawsons to help defray their expenses associated with Jordan's treatment. Thank you to everyone who contributed!
In addition to collecting a financial contribution for the Lawson family, BLL members were offered the opportunity to possibly provide additional support for other children facing cancer, by registering as a potential bone marrow donor with Be The Match through this important group's registry. Did you know that each year, approximately 10,000 people are diagnosed with diseases which can be treated and/or cured with a bone marrow transplant? Currently, only 40% of people in need actually receive a lifesaving transplant because there are not enough people in the registry to genetically match the patients in need.
We all have the potential to help! In order to join the registry, you must be: Between the ages of 18 and 60, in good general health, and willing to donate to anyone in need. If you are interested, joining the Be The Match registry is easy! Be The Match is a bit more liberal with its requirements than blood services. While the following listed conditions would disqualify as Blood Donor, you can still be considered as a Bone Marrow Donor:
>Had Mono
>Traveled outside of the country in the past year
>Lived in Europe during the “Mad Cow” scare in the 1980’s
>Gotten a tattoo or piercing recently
>Were deferred for weighing less than 110 lbs
>May be ill or on antibiotics on the day of the drive
>Have Sickle-cell Trait or Thalassemia Minor
Be The Match cannot take individuals who have a personal history of Cancer, Insulin-dependent Diabetes, Sleep Apnea requiring C-Pap, or Cardiovascular Disease (bypass surgery, stent placement, stroke, TIA, blood clotting issues) - however, each registrant will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
For questions, go to the Be The Match website or contact Nadya Dutchin directly at 443-472-1446.
