    2008 Delaware State Champions

    Freedom wins USYSA Director's Cup
Kirkwood Freedom are the new 2008 USYSA National Champions.

The Freedom overcame the extreme heat and a thin roster to capture the USYSA Directors Cup Girls U14 Championship on Sunday. Casey Horny scored on a laser shot from the left side early in the first half and Amy Stevens redirected a Casey Horney pass into the net early in the second half of the game for a 2-0 lead. Then a strong effort by the defense held a tough Texas Rush Nike team scoreless.

In earlier tournament action the Freedom defeated the Virgnia 4-0 on Saturday, but dropped their second game of the day to the Texas Rush Nike 3-1, leading to their showdown on Sunday for the Championship.

Freedom recipient of "Fair Play" award at Region I Tournament
While the outcome of the games at the Region I tournament may have been a bit of a disappointment, the Kirkwood Freedom was the recipient of the "Fair Play" award for their age group. The winners of this award "are recognized for displaying positive conduct on the field toward their opponents and game officials throughout the competition." Our girls and coaches should be very proud of this accomplishment.

Objectives of the Region I Fair Play Award are:
    a. Respect for self and others through fair play.
    b. Elimination of any and all un-sportsmanlike conduct.
    c. Promotion of safety and development of skills.
    d. Appreciation of opponents.
    e. Respect for officials who ensure fair and safe play.

The referees rate both the players and coaches on each of the above behaviors.

Freedom Wins Delaware U14 State Cup
Kirkwood Freedom beat the Hockessin Hotspur 5-0 to claim the 2008 Delaware U14 State Cup Championship and advance to the Region 1 Tournament in Portland, Maine. Casey Horney led the Freedom with three goals and Michelle Lonergan contributed three assists. Ariel Hyderkhan and Alexis Groux also scored one goal each. Ariel broke a 0-0 tie with approximately 30 seconds left in the half after taking a pass from Michelle. She split the Hotspur defense and put her shot into the far upper corner of the net. Casey Horney gave the Freedom a little breathing room 10 minutes into the second half with her first goal, then added two more goals later in the half. Alexis Groux capped the Freedom scoring with a goal late in the half.

Another great PAGS Season ended with the Freedom as the Champions of the PAGS 1st Division. An 8-0-1 record with 25 goals for and only 5 against. Great season girls.

    Out of Practice Training
March 22, 2006 All players should be running and juggling on their own at least 4 times a week! While running you should be running for a minimum of 2 miles at an 8 - 8.5 minute mile pace. You should work towards a 3 mile run.

When juggling your goal should be to continually challenge your personal record. All players need to be able to get to at least 50 by mid-April.

January 10, 2006 Today I received an email from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, thanking us for our participation. They have wrapped up their 2005 Fall Soccer Kicks for Cancer season, and thanks to 350 teams that have participated, they have raised $182,000 in revenue. So that is about $520 per team on average. The Freedom raised almost 5 times that amount! ($2,431) Great work.

    Soccer Kicks for Cancer
Thank you to everyone for participating in the Kicks for Cancer fundraiser! We ended up collecting a total of $2,431. Great job! That is a lot of money for a great cause.
