About CYSA

Chesterfield Youth Softball Association, Inc. (CYSA) is one of the largest youth softball organizations in the state of Virginia. More than 1,300 girls participated in leagues beginning at age 5 and continuing until age 18. With these kinds of numbers playing under one organization, just imagine the tremendous effort required to run the program.

CYSA is comprised of 18 local athletic associations stretching throughout the county. The boundary lines for the associations are the same as those for the elementary schools which they represent. From the northern part of the county near Midlothian to Matoaca in the South, CYSA provides youth softball opportunities for every girl in Chesterfield County.

Coordinating 18 associations and 1,300 players is not an easy task. It requires hundreds of volunteers who graciously give up their time for the betterment of the program. The CYSA Executive Board, League Commissioners, and the Association's Directors dictate the rules and policies. The coaches and their assistants provide the teaching and instructions for the players. Finally, the score keepers, team mothers, and all of the other team helpers make the games happen.

CYSA Organization Chart

Chesterfield Youth Softball Association, Inc uses the rules of USSSA after our white sheet rules . Flexibility is the key word in USSSA philosophy; it allows a local league to operate according to the needs of the community, rather than asking the community to adapt to an arbitrary set of rules and regulations.

Mission

It is the mission of Chesterfield Youth Softball Association, Inc. (CYSA) to provide a safe, nurturing, organized, and instructive environment for girls to enjoy and learn the game of baseball/softball and sportsmanship in general. The above statement explicitly and implicitly addresses a number of important issues.

First, the safety of every young person is most important to the success of CYSA. While the game of baseball/softball has inherent dangers, we will try to minimize those dangers whenever possible. We will also try to encourage policies that protect young people from non-softball related dangers.

Second, every young person will be nurtured equally, regardless of natural talent. This nurturing implies both physical and emotional growth.

Third, CYSA will provide the organization to seek volunteer adults, equip players and teams, and schedule games.

Fourth, we will provide the best softball instruction that our volunteers are capable of providing. CYSA will arrange clinics to better train players, managers, and umpires in the finer points of the game.

Fifth, since the game of softball is played for fun that will be our primary objective.

Teamwork, fair play, empathy, and good sportsmanship will also be overriding objectives. Developing a competitive spirit, determination, and the desire to win are important objectives and will be developed, but not to the detriment of the nurturing of any individual player. CYSA recognizes that all children develop at different ages. We encourage positive parental involvement, teach children to respect all other individuals, and teach that rewards come from hard work, not necessarily just from accomplishment. CYSA programs are a place to learn and play the sport of softball regardless of the skill level of the individual players.
