MINERS BOYS SOCCER JOINS GIRLS TEAM IN STATES, DEFEAT WILLIAMSPORT ON PK'S AFTER SCORELESS TIE
FROSTBURG, Md. — For the second straight year, Williamsport’s boys soccer team lost the Maryland Class 1A West final in a penalty shootout.
“This is getting a little old,” Wildcats coach Chris Downs said.
No. 1-seed Mountain Ridge connected on all five penalty kicks after as thrilling a 0-0 draw as can possibly be played, and that was enough to leave the Wildcats dissapointed again losing on penalty kicks 5-3. “Dominate the game and lose" Downs said, "there's nothing more to say."
Williamsport (11-5-2) outshot Mountain Ridge (14-2-1) 29-22, with each team putting 11 shots on goal and each keeper coming up with some amazing saves to keep the game scoreless.
The Miners had the first shot in the shootout, and Brandon Rogers, Justin Winebrenner, Zach Saylor, Brandon Cutter and Joao Toulson scored for Mountain Ridge.
Daniel Doub, Cody Gardenhour and Chad Ridenour scored for Williamsport, but Bryan Whitmore — the Wildcats’ second shooter — missed wide left.
“You leave it to a shootout, and that’s what happens,” Downs said.
Without the save of the game from keeper Alex Aleshire, the Wildcats would have lost in regulation.
In the 77th minute, Saylor sent an absolute laser of a shot from 40 yards toward the top right corner. It appeared destined to be a game-winner until Aleshire dove and stretched out his left arm and hand to its absolute limit to deflect the shot just over the crossbar.
“You get in a situation like that, and you have to pick (Aleshire) up,” Downs said. “We’ve been playing like that defensively all year, and we didn’t put one in the back of the net for him.”
Miners keeper Connor Eberly made a few great saves of his own to match Aleshire.
In the 26th minute, Daniel Doub sent a free kick from 19 yards toward the top right corner and Eberly knocked it over the crossbar.
In the 35th minute, Winebrenner launched a 30-yard shot that Aleshire had to knock over the crossbar. Aleshire caught the ensuing corner kick on the fly — one of several free kicks he went high to snatch in midair.
In the fourth minute of the first overtime, Williamsport’s Jordan Payne tried to run onto a through ball, only to have Eberly get there a split-second before Payne could try for the game-winner.
The Wildcats came the closest to getting the elusive goal in the second minute of the second overtime. Doub’s free kick from the right side just barely sailed over Whitmore’s head, but Eberly — who was preparing to try to save the header — watched helplessly as the cross struck the far post and stayed out of the goal, eventually being cleared.
“We came out strong and had some really good chances in both halves,” Downs said. “For some reason it didn’t go our way, but they put it all out there.”
In last year’s 1A West final, Boonsboro defeated Williamsport 2-1 in a penalty shootout.
MINERS GIRLS SOCCER STAYS UNDEFEATED, BEATS BOONSBORO 3-1 FOR WEST REGION CHAMPIONSHIP
FROSTBURG, Md. — By Boonsboro girls soccer coach Kyle Lingg’s estimation, the Warriors controlled “70 to 80 percent” of the action in Tuesday night’s Maryland Class 1A West final at unbeaten Mountain Ridge.
“I was proud of the girls. They played their hearts out,” Lingg said. “We just didn’t put all our chances away.”
The Miners scored on their first shot of both halves and claimed a 3-1 victory for the region title.
Mountain Ridge (17-0) made two offensive surges in the first 10 minutes. The second, in the ninth minute, resulted in the game’s first goal. A bad Boonsboro clearance attempt went to the Miners’ Janelle Walbert, who quickly fed a pass through the middle to Stephanie Fazenbaker. She turned and fired a shot to the right side past Boonsboro keeper Becky Smith for the 1-0 lead.
The Warriors (8-8-1) outshot Mountain Ridge 7-4 in the first half and had three corner kicks to none for the Miners, but couldn’t find the equalizer.
In the 10th minute, Kayla Walsh’s high shot was stopped by Miners keeper Heather Shipe. In the 15th minute, Emily Horst’s dangerous corner kick was punched away by Shipe and a follow shot sailed high.
In the 32nd minute, Walsh tried a chip volley in close that appeared destined for the top right corner before Shipe made another tough save. Walsh’s second shot was easily handled.
“We had a couple corner kicks, and a goal would have changed the complexion of the game,” Lingg said.
Smith made a pair of tough stops to keep the deficit at one goal in the first half. In the 27th minute, Kaylee DeVore broke through on the right, but Smith charged out and made a close-in save. In the 39th minute, Quincy Hegeman sent a free kick from 20 yards toward the top left corner, with Smith jumping and stretching to keep the ball out.
Five minutes into the second half, Kristin Knotts fed a perfect pass from the left side to Fazenbaker, who only had to slip the shot past Smith for a 2-0 Mountain Ridge lead.
In the 53rd minute, the Miners were awarded a free kick from the right side after a handball call that appeared to be unintentional. Hegeman sent the free kick into the box, where it went off Shyler Phillips’ body and in for a 3-0 lead.
“That was an unlucky call, but you can’t do anything about that, you have to take the good calls with the bad,” Lingg said.
Boonsboro finally got on the board in the 62nd minute off a free kick after another handball call. Horst sent the free kick into the box, where Amber Smith headed it in to cut the lead to 3-1.
Walsh had a golden opportunity to make it 3-2 in the 66th minute, as a cross from the right side bounced to her. But she partially mishit the shot and it went wide left.
In the 77th minute, Erin Eslick got her head to Horst’s corner kick, but the shot was easily saved. Two minutes later, a delay of game call on Shipe gave Horst a free kick from 16 yards, but it sailed high.
The Warriors finished with 13-10 edges in shots and a 5-0 edge in corners.
“The last couple weeks, the last month, we’ve come together as a team on and off the field and played our best soccer,” Lingg said.
RIVALRY WEEKEND 2009 STYLE
FROSTBURG, MD – It is rivalry weekend around the four state area and that offers area football fans with several great football games to watch.
The area’s oldest and perhaps most bitter is the one between Allegany and Fort Hill. It has taken a notch up in the past several years as it seems the two schools play each other twice in a three week span to end the season almost every year. With Maryland’s regional playoff format in place, the Allegany Campers and Fort Hill Sentinels are almost destine to meet each other in the second round of the playoffs with the region’s championship on the line. This would not be that big of a deal except the two teams already played three weeks earlier in the regular season finale and homecoming game. This year is no different as the undefeated and top ranked Fort Hill Sentinels march into homecoming with impressive wins this year over: Thomas Johnson, Martinsburg, Surrattsville, Mountain Ridge, Keyser and Mount Saint Joe’s. Meanwhile, the Allegany Campers come into the meeting twice beaten but on a high note as they have won four straight games since the defeat to St. Albans and Keyser in back to back weeks. Should be another great game at Greenway come Saturday afternoon.
In what a lot of area football fans have been waiting for, the Mountain Ridge Miners and Keyser Golden Tornado will face one another for the first time ever at Stayman Field in Keyser. This game could end up being a great rivalry to boost an already great weekend of games to end the regular season. The Miners are coming off of a huge loss to Fort Hill last week while Keyser is coming off of a damaging loss to rival Frankfort as well. The Miners need this game along with a few other things to happen for them to make their first playoff spot in team history. The Golden Tornado have sewed up their spot but need a win in order to host a first round playoff game next weekend.
Other great area games include: The Battle of Garrett County, Northern vs. Southern; Frankfort and Hampshire hooking up, North Hagerstown/South Hagerstown, Boonsboro and Smithsburg locking up and Jefferson meeting Washington. Check out all the area games below.
The guesser man had another amazing week as I went a perfect 10 for 10 in guessing. That brings my season total to a respectable 74 of 91 games and a 81.3%. That is over my season goal of 75. This is the last week of the regular season and a good week is needed if I am to reach my goal. Let the guessing began and as always good luck to all area teams.
Mountain Ridge 12, Keyser 35
Southern 14, Northern 15
Frankfort 35, Hampshire 10

ITS FINALLY HERE... KEYSER VS. MOUNTAIN RIDGE
KEYSER, WV: The Mountain Ridge Miners football team will hit the road for the final regular season game in the 2009 season with a shot at the playoffs. The Miners will travel down to Keyser, West Virginia to take on the Keyser Golden Tornado Friday evening at 7 pm.
The Miners are coming off of a blowout loss at home to rival Fort Hill 51-7. Mountain Ridge is currently in sixth spot in the Maryland 1a west region standings and with a win and a little help could clinch the first playoff spot in school history. The four teams that surround the Miners in the standings all play each other which could help the Ridge in its efforts, if everything falls right.
Mountain Ridge has alternated wins and losses so far this season. The Miners have come up with their wins in weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8 while losing in weeks 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9. If the season continues the way it has it will mean a victory for the Miners come Friday night.
The Miners have found it tough sledding this year on offense following the graduation of all area quarterback Matt Farris. Farris’ replacement, Ryan Delaney, while a senior has not grasped the offense as well as the coaching staff would’ve liked. In what could also be considered a trend, the Miners have also had way too many mental mistakes in games this year. Mountain Ridge has also been bitten by the injury bug this season. They lost key players in Drew Winters and Austin Teets for multiple games this season.
Keyser, which had won six straight before losing to Frankfort last week, comes into the game with a 6 and 3 record. The Golden Tornado had been on a roll since losing the first two games of the year to Wayne and Fort Hill before last week’s debacle. They had won six straight games including matches with Allegany, Hampshire and Musselman.
Mountain Ridge and Keyser have never played each other although many have said they should. The schedules for both teams did not mesh until this year which is why they decided to play finally. Keyser did not play Beall or Westmar in the last 5 seasons.
The Miners will have to play a perfect game without those mental mistakes that so often enter the picture when they play good teams. If they can control the ball against the Tornado and come out with points on their drives they have a good shot to pull the upset. Mountain Ridge has moved the ball on several teams this year but they can’t seem to finish the deal. Ryan Delaney also must play mistake free football. He has had way too many fumbles/interceptions this year for a leader.
Keyser must look to exploit the Miners weaknesses in this game. Mountain Ridge has struggled mightily against all teams that pass effectively this season. Last week they gave up 183 yards and two touchdowns through the air against Fort Hill. They also have the tend to give up big plays when they can least afford them.
KEYS TO THE GAME:
MINERS-
- CONTROL THE BALL
- FINISH THE DRIVES
- FORCE TURNOVER
- LIMIT BIG PLAYS
KEYSER-
- EXPLOIT MINERS SECONDARY
- FORCE TURNOVERS
- DON’T BECOME PREDICTABLE, RUN EFFECTIVELY
FORT HILL LOCKS UP NUMBER ONE SEED IN MARYLAND 1A WEST PLAYOFFS
BALTIMORE, MD: The latest MPSSAA football rankings were released Sunday afternoon and as expected the Fort Hill Sentinels clinched the top seed in the Maryland 1a West region with their win over rival Mountain Ridge on Friday night.
The Sentinels clinched the number one seed in Maryland’s west region and will now look to gain the overall number one seed in class 1a this week with a win over rival Allegany. Fort Hill has a decent shot to overtake Joppatowne if they can win homecoming and have a couple of other things happen. If Fort Hill can get that overall number one seed it will mean at least three home games on the run to another state championship game appearance in Baltimore.
Meanwhile, their cross town rivals, Allegany sewed up the number two spot with a decisive victory over Northern on Friday evening. Allegany would have to lose homecoming and basically have no one that they beat this year win and that might give Smithsburg a chance to overtake them and slide into the second position, provide the Leopards beat Boonsboro.
The Smithsburg Leopards will look to hold onto the third spot in the west when they play their annual rivalry game with Boonsboro. The Warriors need a win to secure their selves of a playoff spot for the third consecutive year.
Clear Spring jumps the Miners of Mountain Ridge with their victory over Randolph Macon and the Ridge’s loss to Fort Hill. The Miners are in the sixth spot just ahead of the Wildcats of Williamsport.
Absolutely huge games will take place this weekend that will no doubt impact which teams reach the playoffs. The Allegany/Fort Hill game has huge implications on seedlings for both teams while the Mountain Ridge/Keyser game provides us with the same as each team are vying for playoff spots. The one thing that the Miners have going for them is the fact that all four teams around them in the standings will be playing each other this week. The Leopards of Smithsburg will face rival Boonsboro on Friday in what is a huge game for both. A win for Smithsburg combined with an Alco lost could mean the Leopards host Alco in the first round. A win by the Warriors could get them a date with Allegany instead of Fort Hill. The other two teams around them, Clear Spring and Williamsport, also face one another on Friday. A win for Williamsport and Smithsburg could mean a playoff spot for the Ridge provided they defeat Keyser. Check out the latest 1a West Standings below:

#1 FORT HILL, #3 ALLEGANY AND #4 FRANKFORT ALL COME UP WITH WINS
FROSTBURG, MD: The top five area poll will change once again this week as two area games involve four of the top five. The number one ranked Fort Hill Sentinels traveled to Frostburg to take on the fifth ranked Mountain Ridge Miners Friday evening at Miners Stadium. Meanwhile, the battle of Mineral County took place on Friday as well between second ranked Keyser and fourth ranked Frankfort.
The Sentinels needed only six minutes to put fourteen points on the board and following a Mountain Ridge score, proceeded to score 37 straight and put the game out of reach 51-7. The Miners couldn’t do anything on offense and following two quick touchdowns by Fort Hill, the Miners got their only score of the night on a 96 yard kickoff return for touchdown. Fort Hill, in fact, only ran one offensive play in that first six minutes to get those two scores.
Keyser, the second ranked team in the area, was looking to win its seventh straight game after they lost the first two of the season when they hosted fourth ranked Frankfort. The Falcons were coming off of their only loss on the season last week vs. rival Allegany. Last year’s game was completely dominated by the Golden Tornado and Frankfort vowed they would not forget that. The Falcons controlled the ball most of the game and came up with a revenge win to bolster their playoff positioning, 22-13.
The only ranked team in the poll not to face another ranked foe was third ranked Allegany as they traveled to woeful Northern. The Huskies didn’t really give Allegany that much of a game as the Campers came away with the 41-20 win. Check out the latest poll below:

FORT HILL, FRANKFORT COME UP WITH BIG WINS
FROSTBURG, MD: All we high school football fans can ask
for this time of year is good, meaningful games being played
between area teams this late in the season. Well that is what we got on Friday evening in Frostburg and Keyser.
The number one team in the area, Fort Hill, took the short
trip to Frostburg to take on rival Mountain Ridge in a huge 1a west region football game. The Sentinels scored two
touchdowns early and never looked back en route to their 51-
7 thrashing of the Miners.
Meanwhile, the battle of Mineral County was taking place at
brand new Stayman Field when Keyser welcomed Frankfort to
town. Keyser absolutely destroyed Frankfort last year en
route to their area championship and the Falcons vowed not to forget, and forget they didn’t. The Falcons controlled most of the game and came away with a huge 22-13 victory. The win
will no doubt help the Falcons when it comes to who and where they will play their playoff games.
In one of the few times this season, Garrett County football
fans had a pair of games to chose from as Southern hosted
Bishop Walsh and Allegany traveled to Northern for games on Friday evening. The Spartans were looking to start another
winning streak following their narrow win over Randolph Macon last week but fell short in a 20-0 decision. Meanwhile, in
accident, the Campers were busy taking it to the Northern
Huskies to the tune of 41-20.
There were also a couple of exciting games in the state of
West Virginia on Friday. Hampshire came back from another
double digit deficit to come out on top of Washington 39-31.
The win puts the Trojans at 5-4 and another victory next
week against Frankfort would put them in the playoffs. The
other good game took place between Moorefield and Pendleton Co. The Yellow Jackets scored late and held on for a 13-6
victory. Check out all the scores below:
#1 Fort Hill 51, #5 Mountain Ridge 7
#2 Keyser 13, #4 Frankfort 22
#3 Allegany 41, Northern 20
Bishop Walsh 0, Southern 20
Hampshire 39, Washington 31
Boonsboro 12, North Hagerstown 6
Smithsburg 26, Williamsport 21
Clear Spring 14, Randolph Macon 7
Middletown 28, Catoctin 35
Martinsburg 28, Musselman 14
Moorefield 13, Pendleton Co. 6

LEE, FORT HILL CRUSH THE MINERS THROUGH THE AIR
FROSTBURG, MD: The Mountain Ridge Miners saw their streaky season continue on Friday night as they lost to top ranked and undefeated Fort Hill 51-7 at Miners Stadium. The loss all but ends the Miners playoff hopes as both Boonsboro and Smithsburg both got wins on Friday.
Mountain Ridge will need a win in their season finale against Keyser and some help. The one thing going in the Miners favor is that the two teams that will be ahead of them will be playing one another opening the door for MR to sneak in.
Keinan Harper attempted to keep the Miners in the game when he returned Fort Hill’s kickoff 96 yards for a score to cut the Sentinel lead in half. Harper also had another long touchdown called back late in the game due to penalty.
Drew Winters was a welcomed site for the Miners defense when he returned from injury several weeks ago. Winters, the middle linebacker for the Miners and a big key to the Mountain Ridge run defense. He had several big tackles on Friday evening to stop the Sentinels from scoring even more points.
Congratulations to both players for earning the player of the week honors for week number nine. Keinan has won offensive and overall player of the game awards several times this season and looks to be one bright spot in the Miners future.
Since Winters returned the Miners run defense has stiffened and he is a big reason why. Drew also plays tailback and has also won several offensive, defensive and overall player of the week awards this season.
Special congrats to Fort Hill QB Devin Lee who earns the overall player of the week honors. In the three year history of the POW, only two other players from opposing teams has won this award. Lee went 5 of 9 for 182 yards and two touchdowns. He also had one interception and played outstanding on both sides of the ball.
OFFENSIVE: Keinan Harper – 96 yard kickoff return td
DEFENSIVE: Drew Winters – 9 tackles
OVERALL: - Devin Lee – 5 for 9, 182 yards, 2 td+
SENTINELS DISMANTLE MINERS, CLINCH TOP SEED IN 1A WEST REGION PLAYOFFS 51-7
FROSTBURG — The top-ranked and unbeaten Fort Hill Sentinels showed they have a lot of weapons in their bag of tricks as they tuned up for next week’s Homecoming showdown against Allegany with a resounding 51-7 victory over No. 5 Mountain Ridge on as perfect a last October night for football on Friday night at Miners’ Stadium.
The victory sends Fort Hill into the regular-season finale with a 9-0 record and solidifies the Sentinels’ hold on the top spot in the Maryland Class 1A West Region rating. Mounain Ridge falls to 4-5 and will need a win over Keyser next week at Keyser to have a remote chance at making the playoffs.
With Mountain Ridge geared to stop Dakota Welsh and the Fort Hill running game, senior quarterback Devin Lee completed 5-of-9 passes for 182 yards and a pair of touchdowns with scoirng strikes of 68 yards to Dylan Clay and 66 yards to Sam Walsh. Lee also returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown and had a pair of interceptions on defense in a great all-around game.
Welsh, who was held to 52 yards on only seven attempts, but blasted for three touchdowns on runs of five, three and three yards. Walker also had a five-yard touchdown run. Josh Borland booted a 41-yard field goal for the Sentinels final three points and Phillip Giugliano kicked six extra points.
Keinan Harper scored the Mountain Ridge touchdown with a 96-yard kickoff return.
The Fort Hill defense, led by Lee and linebackers Welsh and Garrett, held Mountain Ridge to only 39 yards in total offense in the first half as the Sentinels pulled out to a 41-7 lead. The clock was kept running on a 35-point mercy rule after Fort Hill scored on its first possession of the second half.
Lee set up the first Fort Hill touchdown when he returned an inteception 27 yards with a tackle-dodging move to the Mountain Ridge five-yard line. On the next play, Welsh went for his first touchdown with only 54 seconds elapsed. Giugliano kicked the extra point.
Lee then showed some more fancy footwork as he broke loose on the 72-yard punt return that resulted in Fort Hill going up 14-0 at the 8:55 mark. Harrper then ansered with the long kickoff return for the Miners’ only touchdown.
On the Sentinels fourth possession after some runs stuffed, Lee welcomed the opportunity to go deep and found the speeding Clay open about 40 yards down field on a 69-yard scoring pass with 7:09 still on the cflock in the first period.
A 24-yard pass to Walker set up Welsh’s three-yard scoring run at the 10:08 mark in the second quarter. Giugliano’s kick made it 28-7.
Dolly then broke through to block a Mountain Ridge punt and Colton Sibley took the ball to the rhree-yard line. After being stopped on first down Welsh went in for his third touchdown witrh 7:09 still on the clock in the opening half.
After another defensive stop, Walker took a lee pass coming out of the backifeld and raced the 66 yars to paydirt with 4:24 still left in the half. ASfter missing on his previous attempt Giugliana converted for the 41-7 halftime lead.
Fort Hill got the ball at its own 44-yard line after a short kick to start the second half. After catching a pass for 12 yards, Welsh got outside on a 39-yard run to the Mountain Ridge five. On the next play, Walker scored the final touchdown that set the clock in motion with 10:47 left.
Borland, who also handles the kickoffs, booted the field goal with 8:21 remaining.
“Their game plan was to key on stopping our fullback Dakota Welsh and we had other people really step up,” said Fort Hill coach Todd Appel. “Devin Lee had a great game passing the ball and Dylan Clay stepped up with a great catch. We made adjustments and we have a lot of weapons. Our defense played a greaet game again and our defensive end play from Shawn Metheny and Joe Howser was the best we had all year.”

The Miners will open the season with three games at home starting with the Jefferson Cougars on September, 3, 2010. Mountain Ridge will end there three game home stand when they host rival Allegany on September 17.
Mountain Ridge’s first road game will take place in the fourth week of the season against the Hampshire High Trojans. These two teams played an amazing game this year in Frostburg that went down to the last seconds when Hampshire failed on the two point conversion to give the Miners the one point victory.
The Miners are at home the following week when they welcome the Frankfort Falcons to Miners Stadium on October 1st. Mountain Ridge has won two of the first three games in the series but will be looking for payback as the Falcons defeated the Ridge 21-0 this year.
The Northern Garrett Huskies will be the next opponent for Mountain Ridge in Accident. The Miners squeaked out a close 21-15 victory this year to continue their dominance over the Huskies.
The only thing that is not set for the 2010 schedule is an opponent for week seven of the season. This is the week that will be vacated by Wheeling Central. The Miners are currently looking for an opponent and check back often for any updates.
The next two games for the Miners will be on the road starting with an October 22nd date with the Southern Rams. The Miners have absolutely dominated the Rams in the first three games of this series and Southern will be looking for payback.

Mountain Ridge will host the winner of the Smithsburg/Hancock game that took place tonight. The game will be part of a double header of soccer action at Mountain Ridge next Tuesday evening. The boys soccer team will play the late game with the Lady Miners takeing the field for the early one.
MINERS BOYS SOCCER TEAM EARNS TOP SEED IN MARYLAND 1A WEST REGION PLAYOFFS
FROSTBURG, MD: The Mountain Ridge Miners boys soccer team finished its season this week with a victory over Fort Hill to solidfy the top seed in the upcoming Maryland 1a West Region Playoffs.
The Miners are once again the top ranked team in the area entering the playoffs and will enjoy a first round bye awaiting the winner of Smithsburg/Southern.
The Miners will take on the winner of that game next Tuesday evening at 8 pm on the campus of Mountain Ridge High School as part of a double header of soccer action.
CUMBERLAND VS. FROSTBURG, KEYSER VS. SHORT GAP, AND CUMBERLAND VS. GARRETT COUNTY HIGHLIGHTS GREAT WEEKEND OF ACTION
FROSTBURG, MD: This week’s action provides us with two more great games involving area teams that are looking to either solidify their playoff positions or just get into the playoffs all together.
The battle of Mineral County will take place on Friday at Keyser when the Golden Tornado welcome the Frankfort Falcons to town. Last year Keyser absolutely destroyed Frankfort en route to the area championship and you can believe that everyone on the Frankfort side will not forget it. The Falcons are coming off of their first loss last week to Allegany and are looking to get back on the winning side of things while Keyser is looking to continue its six game winning streak. Should be a great game to come out and see.
Meanwhile, in Frostburg, the Mountain Ridge Miners will welcome the top team in the area in Fort Hill in a pivotal game for the Miners playoff hopes. Last year Fort Hill held on for a close victory, 24-21, on a late field goal.
The Allegany Campers are looking for their 600th win in its storied history when they hit the road to take on the Northern Huskies. Two other huge games in the Maryland playoff race is Smithsburg/Williamsport and North Hagerstown/Boonsboro. Other area games include Bishop Walsh/Southern, Hampshire/Washington and Martinsburg/Musselman.
The guessing man is coming off of his first perfect week in his three year existence of picking games. Last week I was an amazing twelve for twelve bringing my percentage up from 75 to 79 for the year. A couple of solid weeks are needed if I am to reach my goal of 80 by the end of the season. Check out the picks below:
Fort Hill 35, Mountain Ridge 21
Frankfort 22, Keyser 20
Allegany 49, Northern 7
Bishop Walsh 7, Southern 12
Hampshire 30, Washington 12
Moorefield 21, Pendleton Co. 13
Martinsburg 31, Musselman 14
Tucker Co. 42, Petersburg 0
Smithsburg 28, Williamsport 7
North Hagerstown 16, Boonsboro 19
MINERS HOST SENTINELS IN HUGE 1A WEST REGION SHOWDOWN
FROSTBURG, MD: The Mountain Ridge Miners welcome the undefeated and top ranked Fort Hill Sentinels to town on Friday Evening in what we can only hope lives up to last year’s game that took place at Greenway.
Mountain Ridge comes into the game with a 4-4 record and has alternated wins and losses this year. The Miners have won all their games in the even weeks of the season while losing on all the odd weeks of the season. Last week was an even week and saw the Miners destroy the visiting Southern Rams 43-7. Mountain Ridge’s four losses on the season have come to Jefferson, Allegany, Frankfort and Wheeling Central in Weeks 1, 3, 5, and 7 of the season.
Fort Hill comes into the game with an unblemished record and are coming off of one of the biggest regular season wins in recent team history. Last week the Sentinels traveled down to Frederick to take on a tough 4a power in Thomas Johnson. And while the Patriots are a little down this season, they are still a tough team that is in Maryland’s 4a class for a reason.
Last year’s game between the Sentinels and Miners could arguably be the best game that high school fans saw last year. The Miners come into the game just like they do this season, desperately needing a victory to reach the playoffs. The Sentinels controlled the ball in the first half of the game and led 21-7 at halftime following a punt return for touchdown late in first half. The Miners controlled the second half and with a couple of breaks led the game early in the fourth quarter. The Sentinels pulled out the game in the end and all but ended the Miners season.
Mountain Ridge currently sits in fifth place in the Maryland 1a West Region Standings and need at least one win in the final two weeks if not two to reach the playoffs for the first time in school history. The Miners are not strangers to the situation as they have faced the exact same situation in the last two years. Meanwhile, Fort Hill sits in first place in the standings and with two wins in the next two weeks they could lock up the top spot in class 1a and sew up home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
The Miners have struggled on offense at times this season and continue to fumble the ball with frightening regularity. The Miners cannot do that on Friday if they expect to come out with a win. They also may need a couple of breaks like they got last year if they are to spur the upset. The recipe for a Miners victory could be long, time chewing drives that end in points. They have to keep Fort Hill’s offense off the field if they want to win.
KEYS TO THE GAME:
- Miners get points on long drives, don’t settle for nothing
- Miners control the time of possession
- Fort Hill stop the run
- Fort Hill offense stay on the field
KEYSER, ALLEGANY MOVE UP FOLLOWING WINS AND FRANKFORT LOSS
FROSTBURG, MD: Big shake up in this week’s area poll as one of the teams fall to another team in the poll big.
The area top five poll has not seen much movement since week five of the season as the top area teams have continued to win and have not faced each other. Well that changed this week as the number two team in the poll, Frankfort, was dismantled on the road by number four Allegany 43-14.
The top team in the area, Fort Hill, continued its dominance as they traveled out of the area for a huge match up with perennial 4a power Thomas Johnson and came up with a huge 12-0 win. Meanwhile the hottest team in the area besides Fort Hill, Keyser continued its winning streak with a 20-13 victory over visiting Musselman Friday evening at home.
The number five team in the poll, the Mountain Ridge Miners, saw an easy week as they trounced Southern 43-7 a week before the huge match up with Fort Hill. This week provides us with two games involving the top 5 teams with Fort Hill @ Mountain Ridge and Frankfort @ Keyser. Check out the poll below

MINERS, BOONSBORO, SMITHSBURG AND WILLIAMSPORT ALL FIGHTING FOR FINAL TWO SPOTS IN REGION
FROSTBURG, MD: The Fort Hill Sentinels and Allegany Campers solidified their top two spots in the 1a West Standings this week with a pair of impressive wins.
The Sentinels traveled down to Frederick and came up with a huge win over 4a Thomas Johnson 12-0 while Allegany stayed at home and routed previously undefeated Frankfort 43-14. The win for Fort Hill all but sews up the top spot in the region. The Sentinels would have to lose their final two games and Allegany win theirs for Fort Hill to even come close to losing the top spot. If Fort Hill can win their final two games and a couple of other things happen it could mean home field advantage for Fort Hill throughout the entire Maryland state playoffs.
Smithsburg came up with a big win while their county rival Boonsboro suffered a heartbreaking loss. The final two spots in the west region will more than likely come down to four teams. (Smithsburg, Boonsboro, Williamsport and Mountain Ridge) The Miners of Mountain Ridge keep their playoff hopes alive with a drubbing of Southern. Check out the updated 1a West Region standing below:

TWO CUMBERLAND SCHOOL ROMP TO BIG WINS
FROSTBURG, MD: Although there were several close games over the weekend the most anticipated game was a blowout.
The game that everyone wanted to see considering the Fort Hill/TJ game was in Frederick were the Campers and Falcons squaring off in Cumberland. Frankfort came into the game undefeated and was looking to quiet the hometown crowd. There were several other good games on the weekends as eight of the twelve games were decided by thirteen points or less. The number one team in the area could not even be stopped by Mother Nature as the Fort Hill Sentinels remained undefeated with a convincing 12-0 win over TJ on the road.
Other good games included Keyser holding on to defeat Musselman 20-13 and improve its winning streak to six straight games and Bishop Walsh scoring late to end its losing streak 23-19 over visiting Randolph Macon Saturday afternoon at home.
