MONTGOMERY BASEBALL & SOFTBALL LEAGUE ANNOUNCES 2024 COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Montgomery Baseball & Softball League (MBSL) is proud to announce its 12th annual Montgomery Baseball & Softball League College Scholarship Program! This annual fund provides scholarship awards to financially assist qualified and deserving MBSL baseball and/or softball players attending institutions of higher learning. Each award will be designated for one school year. It is our intent to award up to three (3) individual scholarships with a combined value of up to $1,500.

“Offering a financial scholarship recognizing senior high school baseball players who came up through the system of the MBSL reminds all of us that baseball teaches so much more than just the game itself,” says Montgomery High School Varsity Baseball Coach Pete Mueller. “The game of baseball establishes community and reinforces the values of perseverance, overcoming adversity, and working as a team for a common cause. These important life skills and lessons are learned at an early age while playing youth baseball.”

Montgomery High School Varsity Softball Coach Bryan Upshaw commented, “The MBSL financial scholarships offer meaningful assistance and recognition to senior high school softball players who have been committed to the game and their community.” Coach Upshaw added, “Our high school players consistently display good sportsmanship, knowledge of the game, and support for their teammates; these values are learned and reinforced playing youth softball in Montgomery.”

Applicants must have participated in the MBSL program for a minimum of three (3) years, be actively involved with high school baseball or softball or other community-based activities, be of outstanding character and integrity, exhibit leadership, and have demonstrated strong academic performance. Applicants must submit at least two (2) adult, non-family references and an original essay of 250-500 words describing what the game of baseball or softball has taught them that will help them be successful in their future endeavors. All applications and required documents must be submitted by April 19, 2024. Scholarship decisions will be announced at the Montgomery High School Scholarship Night in June.

MBSL President Eric Seguin stated, "The Montgomery Baseball & Softball League is proud to announce the 12th year of our scholarship program. MBSL scholarship winners have been exemplary students, athletes, and role models within the Montgomery community.” Seguin added, “We look forward to awarding scholarships again this year to support the collegiate endeavors of our program alumni who consistently reinforce the values and spirit of our youth baseball and softball programs in Montgomery.”

Highlights for 2024

Our Concession Stand “Opt-Out” was extremely popular last year and we will continue to offer this option to parents who prefer not to serve the 6-hour volunteer commitment; the opt-out fee for Spring 2024 is $100 per registered player

I-Ball will once again utilize QuickBall to build basic game skills; we plan to incorporate more game scenarios and actual games into I-Ball to prepare players for the next level

Developmental (D-Ball) and Rookies will once again be combined into one “Rookies” division

Rookies, Minors, and Majors will have activities either 2 or 3 times per week, depending on the week, and will include a mix of games and practices

We will continue to expand the schedule of softball games and practices held at McKnight Complex to build on the excitement that we generated last season

We will do our best to finalize the weekly schedules for each baseball and softball division and communicate that to teams as soon as possible.

Birthdates: 5/1/2018-7/1/2020

Instructional Ball

Kindergarten

Instructional Ball (I-Ball) is for players in Kindergarten and young 1st  graders who have never played baseball. Players meet twice per week on Saturday morning and one weeknight. I-Ball participants will play USA Quickball, with instructors from Zoned leading some sessions and/or practices.  The goal of Quickball is to develop skills in a fun, fast-paced setting by rotating through multiple stations and then playing a short game. Skills stations focus on the proper way to execute all essential diamond skills! You can learn more about Quick Ball at: https://usaquickball.com/6u-entry-level/.

Managers and coaches will evaluate the progress of I-Ball participants and incorporate game situations and competitive games as appropriate.

Cost: $285 with 6-Hour Volunteer Commitment at the Concession Stand OR $385 with “Opt-Out” from 6-Hour Volunteer Commitment at the Concession Stand
Birthdates: 5/1/2017-9/30/2018

Gender: Coed

Rookies Baseball

Grades 1-2

Rookies’ baseball is for 1st graders and 2nd graders. Rookies meet 2-3 times per week with one practice and either 1 or 2 games per week. Rookies is our first "kid pitch" division which combines kid pitch with coach pitch. Player development is emphasized throughout the program. Players will pitch (coaches will assist in the early part of the season and pitching machines may also be used). Catchers wear full equipment to learn the position but there is no stealing allowed. All batters bat each inning but only nine fielders play in the field (field positions are rotated to equalize playing time). A team may only bat through the lineup one time per inning. Games are played on a smaller-dimension (46:60) field, and last about 1 hour 45 minutes.

Cost: $310 with 6-Hour Volunteer Commitment at the Concession Stand OR $410 with “Opt-Out” from 6-Hour Volunteer Commitment at the Concession Stand
Birthdates: 5/1/2015-9/30/2016
Gender: Coed

Minors Baseball

Grades 3-4

Minors is a full kid pitch program for 3rd and 4th graders, and young 5th graders with less baseball experience. Minors meet 2-3 times per week with one practice and either 1 or 2 games per week. Minors are more competitive than Rookies and play follows most of the rules in the standard baseball rulebook. Minors players pitch; stealing is allowed; and an inning continues until there are three outs or five runs scored by the batting team. A certified umpire is used.

Birthdates: 5/1/2013-9/30/2015

Majors Baseball

Majors is our program for 5th and 6th graders, and young 7th graders. Majors meet 2-3 times per week with one practice and either 1 or 2 games per week. Majors may also include some interleague games with neighboring towns, but most games will be played in Montgomery. This division is competitive and follows the entire standard baseball rulebook, including leading, pickoffs, balks, and base stealing. Two certified umpires are used. Games are played on a mid-dimension field (50:70), and last about 2 hours.

Cost: $310 with 6-Hour Volunteer Commitment at the Concession Stand OR $410 with “Opt-Out” from 6-Hour Volunteer Commitment at the Concession Stand
Birthdates: 5/1/2011-9/30/2013
Gender: Coed

Babe Ruth

Grades 7-10

Babe Ruth is our baseball program for 7th through 10th graders. This age group plays on our larger dimension (60:90) field - the same size used by high schools, colleges, and the major leagues. This division uses two certified umpires and follows the entire standard baseball rulebook. Babe Ruth will likely feature 10 regular season interleague games against Rec teams from towns in Somerset and Hunterdon counties followed by exciting post-season playoffs. Games typically last 2 hours 15 minutes and are scheduled on weeknight evenings and/or Saturdays with half played “away” in neighboring towns (travel up to 40 minutes).

Note: 7th graders playing 12U Travel are strongly encouraged to play Majors as opposed to Babe Ruth to maintain consistency in field size.

Cost: $310 with 6-Hour Volunteer Commitment at the Concession Stand OR $410 with “Opt-Out” from 6-Hour Volunteer Commitment at the Concession Stand
Birthdates: 5/1/2008-9/30/2011
