SAINTS ADD INFIELDER
The Manistee Saints received a commitment from Trenton Smiley to play for the team in the coming season.
Smiley, a South Haven native, is a junior at Winston Salem State University in North Carolina and will be counted on to bolster the left side of the infield.
Smiley spent the first two years of his college career at Henry Ford CC in Detroit.
2018 ROSTER TAKING SHAPE
The Manistee Saints roster is beginning to take shape in anticipation of the coming season and the Great Lakes UBL Winter Meeting scheduled for January 13, 2018 in Mt. Pleasant. Thirteen players have signed letters of intent for the coming season and the Saints staff continues to look for talent to add to the roster.
The Saints anticipate their '18 season opener to be over the Memorial Day weekend and hope to have their schedule completed by late January.
RIETZ PARK WORK
The Manistee Saints continued their commitment to making Rietz Park one of the finest baseball facilities in Northern Michigan on Friday as Turf Services delivered and laid 20 tons of MarCo Clay infield material. The material improves the infield playing surface and adds to the safety of the field.
Turf Services also reworked the pitching mound and home plate area's in preparation for the spring baseball season.
SAINTS ANNOUNCE POST SEASON AWARDS
The Manistee Saints named their Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year for 2017 on Thursday. Lucas Richardson was named Player of the Year for the 2nd consecutive year. Lucas hit .316 and played in every game of the season to extend his consecutive games played streak to 119. He also led the team in doubles with 10 and RBI’s with 24.
Robin VanOrden was named Pitcher of the Year, leading the team in games pitched with 9, innings pitched with 55.2, and strike outs with 35. Robin posted an earned run average of 2.77.
Four Saints players were named to the Great Lakes UBL All-Star team for the '17 season, pitcher Robin Van Orden,
outfielder Lucas Richardson, infield Roddy MacNeil, and pitcher/DH Kyle Gorksi.
