Empire State Champions!!
The Cambridge Peewee A Hawks captured the championship in the Rochester Empire State Tournament this past weekend, defeating the Markham Waxers 5 to 1 in the final.
This was the second meeting between these two teams in this tournament and the Markham Waxers were hoping for some revenge after losing the preliminary round game to the Hawks. Markham began with a flurry of opportunities early in the first period and the Hawks found themselves down 1 to 0 after the first 5 minutes of play. This seemed to serve as an early wake up call fo the Hawks who quickly returned to form and evened the score. By the end of the first period the Hawks had added another to take the lead. An early 2nd period goal by the Hawks put them in the drivers seat but there was plenty of time remaining. The next goal would be crucial. Early in the 3rd period the Hawks orchestrated an amazing passing play to net them their 4th goal and silence the opposition for good. Another late period goal closed out the scoring for a 5 to 1 victory.
Cambridge advanced to the finals by defeating the Schenectady Chargers 7 to 0 in their opening game on Friday. Then they defeated the Markham Waxers 6 to 4 and the home town Rochester Grizzlies 3 to 1.
All cylinders were firing on the weekend with every line contributing to the scoring. Defensively the team only allowed 6 goals, which speaks for itself.
