Space Coast PeeWees Win Tournament
This past weekend (Aug 28-30), the Space Coast PeeWee Travel Team participated in the Florida Panthers Early Bird Tournament in Coral Springs to get warmed up for the new season. The Space Coast team, preparing for a season at the AA level, played in the single A division of this tournament to gauge how prepared they are for the AA level. The learned that they are ready for the AA challenge by posting a 4-0 record in the round-robin phase of the tournament, then winning a hard fought contest against the Florida Junior Panther A team in the championship game. Overall, the team outscored their opponents 17 to 5. The team received goal scoring from Eli Kinsman, Paul Rigolini, Slate Gray, Shane O’Neil, Zack Armour, Mitchell Quatrale, Philip Jenny, and Cole Prospero. Those providing assists included several of those listed as well as Matt Ayres, Dylan King, and Jakob Mathieu. Clay Kerr, the Space Coast goaltender, posted two shutouts and a 1.00 goals against average over the five games.
The PeeWees will now travel to Ellenton this weekend, along with the Mite, Squirt and Bantam teams, for the Labor Day Challenge tournament. League play for the team starts September 26 in the Statewide Florida Hockey League. The team is coached by Shawn Ray, Bret Thompson, and Gary O’Neil

New Board Members
As a result of a very close membership vote earlier this year, the BAIHA board decided to welcome all four candidates as new volunteer members. In addition, it was long overdue that we install new officers of the board, so on July 9 Eric Coleman was named President (replacing Gary O'Neil), Jim Kinney was named Vice President (filling a vacancy), and Jason Armour was named Director of Travel Teams (replacing Robert Bourret). Also named to the board is John Batchelor who is awaiting his assignment. The BAIHA board will continue to work closely with the Space Coast Iceplex to keep the sport of ice hockey not only a viable youth sport in Brevard County, but to maintain Space Coast Hurricanes ice hockey as a highly respected organization statewide. Make it a point to thank these new board members for their willingness to volunteer their time.

Hockey Quotes
"This is the time of year when we have parents of 8- and 9-year-olds taking their young hockey players from their local town programs to out-of-town "elite" hockey tryouts and programs, programs that are more expensive and require more travel. This switch is done despite a parent's failure to implement an understanding of children and parenting: Prepubescent athletic achievement is, 99.9 percent of the time, completely irrelevant to postpubescent athletic achievement. It's too much, too soon for children and comes at a needless and unnecessary cost to the parent. It's usually a lose-lose situation that plays with the fragile brains of children." - John Buccigross, ESPN
"...non-hockey fans should comprehend and appreciate how difficult and unique hockey is to play. That level of athleticism weeds out the weak ones. I don't think hockey is a mainstream sport, and it may never be. So let's accept it and enjoy it. If hockey were such an easy sport, they would call it basketball, baseball or football." - Staff Sgt Ouimet, USAF, Middle East
”People talk about skating, puck handling and shooting, but the whole sport is angles and caroms, forgetting the straight direction the puck is going, calculating where it will be directed, factoring in all the interruptions. Basically, my whole game is angles.” - Wayne Gretzky
ESPN's John Buccigross quoting an excerpt from Jack Falla's "Home Ice":
"The most consequential backyard rink ever built was the one Walter Gretzky constructed on a slightly concave stretch of lawn behind the family home at 42 Varardi Street in Brantford, Ontario. … Walter also must have known that the best way to learn to play hockey is not only to be skating wind sprints and three-on-twos at the local rink, but to supplement team practices with time alone: time spent skating, stick-handling, and -- through a mysterious osmosis that seems to occur in some but not others -- internalizing the feel of puck, stick, blades and ice into an instinctive comprehension of the game, an assimilation surpassing our, or even his, understanding."
