North Jersey League Tournament Results
February 14 & 15, 2009 19 Chatham wrestlers made the trek to Jefferson High School to compete in the Clinic, JV and Varsity level North Jersey League Tournaments held this weekend.

The bracket sheets from all 3 tournaments are available on our website under Handouts from the Main Menu on the left.

Clinic Results: 1st place medals were earned by John Paul Rohe, Connor Cortese, Michael Rohe, Phillip Hoerner and Niccolo Colucci.

John Paul dominated both his opponents winning 13-3 and 18-3. Connor rolled through his first 3 opponents recording wins of 17-1, 18-2 and pinning the 3rd; and then won a hard fought battle 8-7 for the gold. Michael picked up where he left off last week pinning his 1st opponent; winning 6-3 in his 2nd match; and pinning again in the finals for a gold medal. Phillip Hoerner ruled the mats pinning all 3 of his opponents and leaving no doubt who went home with the gold. Niccolo Colucci won 7-4 in his first match; and then turned up the heat pinning his 2nd opponent and crushing his 3rd opponent 19-4.

Tommy Lamar and Jack DiBenedetto both returned to Chatham with 2nd place medals. Tommy earned an 11-1 victory, but lost a tough match in the finals. Jack didn't give up a point to his first 2 opponents winning 12-0 and 4-0; then pinned for his 3rd victory. Jack wrestled hard in the finals, but lost to a more experienced opponent.

Drew Mitzak earned a 3rd place medal in a crowded bracket with 2 convincing victories with scores of 11-5 and 13-0. Anthony Gonzalez earned a 4th place medal closing out his final opponent with a hard fought 12-9 decision.

JV Results: Gold medals were earned by Aedon Joel, PJ Joel, Evan Gavalakis, and Christian Colucci. Aedon made it look easy pinning all 3 of his opponents. PJ dominated in all of his matches - winning his 1st match 13-4, pinning his 2nd opponent and finishing the day with an 11-2 victory. Evan continued his season-long domination recording 3 pins and slipping in an 11-5 victory in between. Christian won 9-3 in his 1st match; pinned his 2nd opponent; and then clinched gold in the finals in a hard fought match winning 3-1.

Timothy Rohe recorded a pin, and Will Larkey and Matthew Liberato both wrestled hard throughout the tournament.

Varsity Results: Matthew Davis finished the season with a Gold medal in the 116 lbs bracket. Matthew cruised 18-2 and 14-0 against his first 2 opponents, and then came out on top 3-2 in the finals. Jon Davis came in 3rd in a loaded 90 lbs bracket. Jon won his 1st match 11-0, then lost to the eventual gold-medal winner in his 2nd match. Undaunted, Jon came back pinning his next opponent and finishing the day with a 6-2 victory. Justin Engel came in 8th in the 80 lbs bracket recording a 1st period fall on the day.

JV King-of-the-Mat Tournament Results
February 7, 2009 Our wrestlers had a great day at the JV KoM Tournament hosted by Parsippany PAL.
PJ Joel, Timothy Rohe, Brian Weber, Zach Ryan and Christian Colucci all earned the title "King of the Mat".

PJ Joel won 4 matches to take the gold. PJ beat his first opponent 16-4; pinned his second; dominated his third opponent 13-4; and then won 11-6 in the finals. Timothy Rohe pummeled first opponent into submission; pinned his second; then won the finals in what would be the match-of-the-day in triple over-time. Brian "the pinning machine" Weber pinned both of his opponents for the crown. Zach Ryan dominated his first two opponents 11-0 and 13-2, and then beat his third opponent by a narrow margin after a well fought battle. Christian Colucci won his first tournament in a Cougar singlet after pinning his first opponent and dominating his second.

Aedan Joel, Jack O'Neill and Michael Kellstrom all came in second place. Aedan and Jack both pinned an opponent on their way to earning silver medals. Jack Weber, Stephen Bondurich, Allan Walters and Joseph Alfano came in third to earn bronze medals. Jack Weber and Joseph Alfano each earned a pin on their way to third. Luke Ciccarelli, Michael DiBenedetto, Mark Kellstrom each earned a medal for their participation in this event.

Congratulations to all these wrestlers for their terrific efforts!

Golden Griffin Tournament Results
January 11, 2009 Our coaches are very proud of the 18 Chatham wrestlers who competed in the Queen of Peace Golden Griffin Tournament in North Arlington, which was both a novice and open tournament.

Evan Gavalakis was the lone Cougar to get 1st place in the novice division. Evan pinned his first opponent in 16 seconds and then wrestled his heart out to beat his next opponent for the gold medal. Derek Myler came in 2nd place. Derek worked hard to pin his first two opponents, but lost in the finals to take home a silver medal. John Paul Rohe also earned a silver medal. John beat his first opponent 12-0 and then lost a close one in the finals. Jake Holman also took home a silver medal. Jack Ryan Mulligan, Philip Hoerrner and Michael Rohe all came in 3rd and took take home bronze medals. Jack Ryan Mulligan got a bye in the first round and then lost his next match - a heartbreaker in over time, but Jack rebounded to pin his next opponent to come in 3rd. Phillip got a forfeit in the first round, lost a close second round match, but then won his third match to take home the bronze. Michael Rohe lost his first match, but was inspired by his brother John's medal to win his next match to earn a bronze medal. Noah Shaw was all smiles in both of his matches and exhibited a lot of heart as he duck walked more times in his second match than any other wrestler at the tournament.

In the Open Division Dylan Mulcahy pinned both of his opponents in the first period to take home a gold medal. Tim Rohe traded-in his headlock for the Peterson. Tim was down in his first match after being poked in the eye, but pinned his opponent in the second period with a Peterson. Tim's finals match was tied 2-2 after 3 periods, but he lost in overtime to take home a silver medal. All three Rohes brought home a medal. Aedan Joel took home a silver medal. Aedan beat his first opponent 10-2, but then lost a close match to a very tough competitor in the finals. PJ Joel and Harrison Shaw also earned silver medals. Christian Colucci came in third place. Christian lost his first match, pinned his second opponent in 20 seconds and then pinned his third opponent to bring home a bronze medal. Michael Kellstrom also earned a bronze medal.

The Heart-of-a-Lion award goes to Connor Cortese. Connor, a second year wrestler, had no kids his age and weight to wrestle in the novice division, so he moved up to the open division. After losing his first match the calm looking Connor rebounded to maul his second opponent and earn a bronze medal. Nicolo Colucci and Colin Ness are both runner-ups for the Heart-of-a-Lion award as these two novice wrestlers also competed very well in the open division.

Wrestle-Off's for Varsity spots
Please familiarize yourself with the club's wrestle-off policy which is in the Parents Guide (Select "Handouts" from the Main Menu bar on the left side of the web-site). Wrestling is amongst the fairest of sports. In many sports playing-time is based upon the subjective views of the coaches. In wrestling if your child wins the wrestle-off they have a spot in the Varsity line-up.

Typically wrestle-offs will take place on Saturdays between King-of-the-Mat events, or during practice time. When a child wins a wrestle-off they are guaranteed 2 real match opportunities (meaning they actually get to wrestle - forfeits don't count). If a child loses a wrestle-off, they can challenge again after the winning wrestler gets their 2 match opportunities. It is the parent's responsibility to inform coaches of their child's desire to wrestle-off.

Tournament Forms and Directions
Registration forms (under Handouts from the Main Menu on the left) and directions (under Directions from the Main Menu on the left) to tournaments that our club will be attending are now available on our website including, of course, those for our own Holiday Novice tournament being held on Sunday December 21st, 2008. Additional information for future tournaments will be added as soon as information is available.
