Patriots Playoff Hopes Dashed by Magruder -- in OT
    October 28, 2008
In Round 2 action of the MPSSAA playoffs, the Patriots were back at Magruder on a cold, windy afternoon and on an even worse pitch than just 2 weeks ago when the Patriots fell to the Colonels in a hard-fought contest, 1-0. Throughout the match, players kept losing their footing on the poor, muddy, slippery pitch and in the end, it would be Magruder's best weapon. But, the Patriots would strike first and quickly. After the Patriots kick-off, Stephen Ho collected a pass and served a ball to Efe Halici in the box but it was cleared out of bounds on the left near 15 yds. After the ensuing throw-in, Efe passed to Daniel Silversmith about 20 yds. left/center who turned and struck a hard shot on goal which appeared to be deflected off of a defender and then off of the far post down into the net to put the Patriots up 1-0. Several minutes later, Sam Hulsey collected a ball in the middle, dribbled a few yards forward and took a shot from about 20 yds. out which went wide. The Patriots repossessed the ball and Daniel S. passed to Efe in the right corner for a cross through the box which the GK caught. Magruder countered with a run and sent the ball into the box which Matt Black grabbed. Magruder repossessed the ball and broke through on the left but the ball went over the end line for a goal kick. At about the 14 min. mark, after the ball went over the end line, Matt B. booted the ball upfield but Magruder repossessed the ball and broke through deep into the Patriots' left back but Skylar closed in to defend/tackle the ball away. The Colonels collected the ball and served it into the box and it was grabbed by Matt B. Danny K. sent a ball upfield on the right to Efe who beat the last defender and fired a blast from about 22 yds. right which the GK stopped near post and the ball deflected outward back to Efe who took a left-footed shot from about 10-12 yds. center but the shot sailed wide left of goal. After the Colonels' goal kick, Matt Harlow collected the ball on the left side and dribbled deep into the Colonels' right corner but the ball was defended off of Matt over the end line for a goal kick. Magruder collected the ball and moved it upfield into the Patriots’ right back for a corner into the box which Skylar headed away to setup a counter and nice movement of the ball but after it was defended out of bounds, a bad throw-in gave possession back to Magruder but the Patriots repossessed the ball and setup an attack which was nullified by an offsides call. David Shcherbelis came in cold to defend the PK shot but it went into the net to his left giving Magruder the come-from-behind victory, 2-1. October 18, 2008
It was a splendid and sunny afternoon -- although a bit breezy -- for Seniors Day at Wootton for the Patriots’ next to last game in the season against the QO Cougars who are having a similar season as the Patriots. After ceremonies to honor seniors Ethan Alkon, Matt Black, Sam Hulsey, Alex Kiener, Danny Kawamura, Skylar Olson, Daniel Silversmith, and Michael Yoon, the Cougars kicked off and the ball went out of bounds shortly afterwards near mid-field. After a throw-in, Skylar collected the ball, passed to Ethan who worked the ball into the Cougars’ right corner for a corner kick. Ethan passed the CK to Skylar who served the ball into the box and the GK bobbled the ball but scooped it up to boot it away for a counter. The Cougars penetrated deep into the Patriot’s right back but Danny K. cleared the ball away. QO repossessed the ball but the play ended with the ball over the end line for a Patriots’ goal kick. Daniel S. received a pass on the left, dribbled deep into QO’s left back but the ball was tackled away for a QO counter. At the 5 min. mark, QO penetrated deep into the Patriots’ left back to send a dangerous ball across the goal mouth which Matt grabbed. One min. later after a foul by QO, Jason Greenberg sent a long free kick into QO’s box but it was cleared away for a counter. The Cougars broke through the Patriots’ left back but the ball was cleared away. QO repossessed the ball and sent it into the box but Matt kicked it away. QO repossessed the ball and after breaking through the back line and a foul by Danny K., QO sent a long free kick from about 40 yds. on the right into the box. Danny K’s attempted header to clear the ball away went upward and backward but Matt jumped up to grab the ball. At the 11 min. mark, the Patriots worked the ball upfield to Daniel S. about 20 yds. on QO’s left side. Daniel S. sent a ball into the box to Ethan but the GK grabbed it and booted the ball upfield for a counter. Matt came off his line to collect the ball near the 18 yd. line but was whistled for picking it up just outside the box. The resultant free kick from about 19 yds. center went wide right but the official did not blow the whistle to start the play and luckily the 2nd attempt sailed high over the cross-bar. At the 16 min. mark, after several minutes of attacks and counters by both sides, Skylar collected a ball, dribbled upfield near the Cougars’ right corner but the ball was defended out of bounds. Jason made a throw-in near 5 yds. side line into the box but QO cleared the ball away. The Patriots repossessed the ball and Skylar passed a ball into QO’s right back to Alex but it was cleared out right back to Skylar who fired a shot towards goal which sailed high over the cross-bar on the left. QO’s goal kick was possessed by the Patriots and Skylar sent a pass again to Alex on the left but QO defended it out of bounds near 15 yds. on the left, and Jason’s throw-in was grabbed by the GK. QO repossessed the ball and setup a right corner kick which was unsuccessful, but at the 22 min. mark, after a throw-in by QO near 30 yds. right, the Cougars served the ball into the box and a QO striker slammed a hard, low shot on goal as Matt dove to the turf to clutch ball to his chest but it deflected out to another nearby QO player who easily tapped the go-ahead goal into the open net. One min. later after the Patriots kick off, Skylar received a ball on the right near mid-field, dribbled in towards goal and sent a strike from about 18 yds. center which the GK bobbled/deflected behind the end line for an ensuing right corner kick. Stephen launched the CK into the box and it was cleared for a throw-in by Jason on the left side but the Cougars cleared it upfield for a counter. For the next several minutes, play went back and forth with both sides countering and defending well. Patriots and Blazers Battle to a Draw
    October 4, 2008
On a splendid, warm and sunny early afternoon at Blair on a poor pitch, the Patriots faced the 4-2-1 Blazers who are a strong 4A East contending team just behind Sherwood, 5-1-0. The Blazers lost last week to Sherwood, 0-1, in a fluke goal in OT as their GK fell to the turf in a collision with a Blair defender as the winning goal was struck. In today's game, the starting GK would be sidelined from the injury suffered in that match.

Several key Patriots were also sidelined from injuries or family emergency. It was a back and forth type of game with both sides launching attacks and counters. After a foul by the Blazers at the 2 min. mark, Skylar Olson sent a long free kick from 35 yds. on the left into the box but it was cleared away and Blair countered with a long ball upfield that got through the back line near 18 yds. center but Jason Greenberg fended off the striker and ably cleared the ball away. At about the 5 min. mark, Daniel Riggio sent a nice through-pass from near mid-field to Max Goldschein on the right side about 35 yds. who worked the ball in the right corner and an eventual corner kick which was unsuccessful. One minute later, an almost identical play ensued with Stephen Ho sending a ball to Max on the right side who was fouled around 25 yds. on the right. Skylar sent the free kick into the box where it dangerously bounced around before being cleared away by Blair. Another long ball by Blair was launched upfield behind the back line to a speedy Blazers player about 20 yds. center who took a weak shot which missed to the right. One minute later, Blair was on the attack again with another ball sent upfield which penetrated deep into the back line but it was cleared away. Blair had a couple more chances at the 10 min. and 12 min. marks with a dangerous free kick in the box which was cleared, and a shot which sailed wide right. At about the 14 min. mark, Danny Kawamura sent a nice pass upfield from the left mid-center area to Stephen about 35 yds. on the right but the play was defended well with a resultant counter-attack by Blair, again sending a ball upfield to a Blazers player who broke thru the back line but the Patriots were able to tackle and clear the ball away. But, the Blazers came right back with a dangerous ball served into the box which Matt Black jumped up to punch away. One minute later, the Blazers setup a corner kick opportunity from the left corner and the ball landed in the goal mouth, dangerously bouncing around before being cleared away. At the 17 min. mark, Sam Hulsey maneuvered in the middle and found space to serve a nice ball in the box to Max whose header went just over the cross-bar. Blair countered and at around the 19 min. mark after a foul, the free kick landed in the goal mouth, again bouncing around dangerously before finally being cleared away. The Blazers once again got behind the back line on another long ball near 18 yds. center, but Jason closed in to tackle and clear the ball away. At about the 30 min. mark, Alex Kiener sent a nice pass in the midfield to Jeff Robinson further up on the left who passed to Sam overlapping on the left side who took the ball down to near the end line but the play was defended well and the ball cleared away. Josh Stern and Kian Kassarei came in to help in the back. At around the 32 minute mark, Blair got a ball deep in the right back, crossed a ball through the goal mouth where a Blazers player sent a shot on goal which Matt caught. Blake Band came in for relief and help in the back. At the 34 min. mark, Skylar sent a free kick from about 20 yds. on the right into the box and Jeff was able to strike the ball near the goal line but it was deflected/cleared away. At the 39 min. mark, Sam heel-flicked a ball about 25 yds. on the left to Skylar as he raced down the side line towards the end line, but the play was well defended and the ball cleared away. Despite the barrage of attacks/counters by both teams, no goals were finished and the half ended scoreless. Blair’s solid defense held the Patriots to just 1 shot on goal and 1 corner kick while the Blazers took 3 shots on goal and 1 corner.

In the second half, at about the 5 min. mark, the Blazers set up a sequence from the midfield from #14 to #17 about 20 yds. left who served a ball into the box where the tall #8 player jumped up to head in the go-ahead goal. About 4 mins. later, Jeff received a pass upfield on the left of the Blazers’ half about 35 yds., dribbled towards the corner/end line and beat the closing defender to send a pretty cross into the goal mouth where Stephen struck a hard shot on goal from about 18 yds. on the right which the GK stopped the shot but couldn’t keep possession of the ball as it bounced back out into the goal mouth where Max alertly struck in the equalizer goal. At the 13 min. mark, Skylar sent a long ball upfield to Stephen about 35 yds. on the right in the Blazers’ half, who worked the ball up near the end line but the play was defended well and the ball tackled/cleared away. Three mins. later, at the 16 min. mark, after a free kick by Blair, #14 served a ball from the Patriots’ right side about 22 yds. and into the box where #13 was able to collect the ball, turn and fire a close-in shot past Matt to put the Blazers up, 2-1. One minute later, Daniel Silversmith collected a ball around 22 yds. center, turned and sent a shot on goal which the GK was unable to secure and the ball rolled out in the goal mouth where Jeff ran onto the ball to strike in the equalizer goal. At the 28 min. mark, Blair sent another dangerous ball in the box which found Matt slightly off of his line but Skylar raced back to the goal line to clear the struck ball away. And, seconds later, after a foul by the Patriots, Blair sent a free kick from 22 yds. on the right that Matt punched away. One minute later, after another foul by the Patriots, Blair sent another free kick from the same area into the box which sailed wide right of goal. One minute later, Blair sent another dangerous long ball into the box which Matt snatched. At the 31 min. mark, Matt Harlow worked a ball from the left back into the Blazers’ left corner but the play was defended and the ball cleared away. At the 33 min. mark, at about 22 yds. on the right, the Patriots served a ball in the box and a header attempt missed wide left. Two mins. later, the Blazers launched a hard shot from about 22-25 yds. on the right which missed wide near post. At the 37 min. mark, Blair took another shot from about 20 yds. left center which went wide near post, followed one min. later by another hard left-footed shot form 22 yds. right which Matt caught. Due to a Blazers injury, play extended into 8 min. overage with an opportunity setup by each tem but could not finish and the matched ended in regulation time, 2-2. The Blazers held the Patriots to 3 shots on goal and no corners while Blair took 6 shots and no corners.

The ensuing 1st 10 min. golden-goal OT was much the same action as in regulation with both teams moving and defending the ball well. In the 1st min., Daniel R. sent a pass on the left side to Stephen who maneuvered upfield to take a shot which the GK caught. One min. later, Daniel S. sent a pass to Stephen on the left side who maneuvered his way upfield near the end line but lost control of the ball over the end line. Matt H. received a ball near mid-center on the left, worked his way up in the box 18 yds. to take a shot which the GK grabbed. One minute later Max passed a ball to Matt H. on the left side which was defended and the ball deflected over the end line with a resultant CK. Skylar sent the left CK into the box but it was cleared away. The Blazers countered and at the 6 min. mark with a ball passed upfield on the left side to a Blazers player who sent a nice cross through the box that was then struck on goal which Matt caught. Wootton countered, with Jeff collecting the ball and passing upfield to Alex who was defended with the ball deflected over the end line for a corner kick. Skylar sent the left corner kick into the box where Matt H. headed the ball toward goal but missed beyond the end line. At the 9 min. mark, Skylar launched a free kick from 35 yds. on the right into the box where Jeff possessed the ball to strike a ball on goal which the GK blocked and collected the rebound. And, just as time ran out, Jeff had another opportunity to cinch the match with a close-in shot which the GK came off his line to stop. Wootton held Blair to 1 shot on goal and no corners while the Patriots took 5 shots on goal on goal with 2 corners which were unsuccessful and the 1st OT ended scoreless.

In the 2nd 10 min. golden-goal OT, although players were fatigued, the hard-fought contest continued with both teams determined to end the match with a golden-goal. At the 2 min. mark, Danny K. sent a pass upfield to Stephen in the middle who flick-kicked a pass to Max but the play was defended/stymied. Blair countered and one minute later, Blair sent a hard shot on goal from 22 yds. right which was caught by Matt. At the 4 min. mark, Danny K. made a slide-tackle on a ball deep in the Patriots back. After a foul by Blair seconds later, Skylar sent a free kick from about 22 yds. right into the box where Stephen sent a shot on goal which the GK caught. At the 7 min. mark, Skylar sent another free kick from 22 yds. center of Blair’s side but it sailed wide left of goal. One min. later, Jeff worked a ball upfield on the right but it was defended out of bounds for a throw-in. Blair countered and sent a ball upfield on the left to a player who fired a shot which sailed wide left. And, as time expired, Sam passed a nice ball from about 22 yds. on the right side to Stephen in the goal mouth about 6 yds. out who blasted a hard shot which sailed over the cross-bar, and the matched ended in a draw, 2-2. The Blazers and Patriots each took 2 shots and no corners.

    Patriots Top Bluedevils
    October 2, 2008
It was an early afternoon game at home with the very physical Bluedevils, and it was one of those matches where there was a lot of offensive action/opportunities for both sides but neither team would be able to finish – except once, luckily for the Patriots. Moments after the kick-off, Skylar Olson tripped to the turf in attempting to clear a ball away which Springbrook then possessed, setting up a dangerous threat deep in the back but Danny Kawamura scrambled to tackle the ball away. Several minutes later on a counter at about the 3 minute mark, Max Goldschein received a ball upfield in the Bluedevils’ left flank and crossed a dangerous ball across the goal mouth but it was snatched by the GK. Just one minute later, on a counter, a ball was passed through the Patriots’ back line but Danny K. raced over to make another timely tackle. At the 7 minute mark, Jason Greenberg made a nice throw-in from around 25 yards on the left into the goal mouth where Stephen Ho back-heeled a flick on goal which was caught by the GK. One minute later, Skylar passed a ball over from the left side into the middle around 22 yards center to Sam Hulsey, who dribbled a couple steps forward and sent a shot on goal which the GK caught. Two minutes later, Jeff Robinson received a ball on the left side and served it into the box to Max who took a shot which the GK caught. The Patriots kept attacking/countering and at about the 12 minute mark, Ethan Alkon served a free-kick from 25 yards on the left into the box where Jason headed the ball on goal which the GK caught. One minute later, Stephen launched a corner kick from the right side which Jason again headed but it went high over the cross-bar. The Bluedevils then setup a counter-attack, pushing the ball quickly upfield on the right side but Danny K. hustled over to slide-tackle the ball out of bounds. At the 17 minute mark, the Bluedevils sent a nice through-ball to a player who timed his run from an onsides position to receive the ball around 22 yards out, dribbled in to about 8-10 yards out to the left but the hard struck ball fortunately sailed wide of net on Matt Black's left side. After a foul by the Patriots 1 minute later, the Bluedevils served a dangerous free-kick in the box where a Springbrook player collected the ball and fired a shot towards goal which went wide again on Matt’s left side. At the 20 minute mark, Stephen stole a ball on the right side near mid-field, dribbled a few yards upfield and switch-passed the ball over to Matt Harlow on the left side around 22 yards out who then dribbled in towards goal but the play was defended and the ball was grabbed by the GK. One minute later, the Patriots were back on the attack with Daniel Silversmith receiving a ball near 22 yards center, turned and sent a strike on goal which the GK caught. One minute later at the 22 minute mark, Stephen crossed a ball deep within the Bluedevils’ left flank from 10-12 yards out which rolled across the goal mouth where Skylar just missed getting to the ball to punch it in before the GK grabbed it. One minute later at the 24 minute mark, Skylar served a ball from 35 yards out on the right into the box but it was defended behind the end line for a corner kick. Kian Kassraei came in to play solidly on the right side to help stop the Bluedevils. At the 34 minute mark, Skylar passed a ball in the middle to Sam around 18 yards center who then served the ball into the box but it was deflected behind the end line. Moments later, Skylar crossed a ball from the right side into the box but it was cleared away. At the 36 minute mark, Michael Yoon sent a nice pass upfield to Skylar just over the mid-center line where he collected the ball, beat the pressing defender, dribbled upfield to around 10-12 yards out on the left to fire a strike near post but the GK repositioned himself well to deflect the shot away. One minute later, at the 37 minute mark, off of a counter-attack by the Bluedevils, another well-placed through-ball got behind Michael to a Bludevils player who worked the ball in to about 10-12 yards out center to send a hard shot on goal which was saved by Matt. The Patriots countered with Michael sending a nice pass upfield to Max around 20 yards on the left side who fired on goal but the ball was caught by the GK, and the half ended scoreless. The Bluedevils would take 5 shots on goal and no corners while the Patriots launched 6 shots on goal and setup 5 corner kicks.

One minute after the second-half kickoff, Daniel Riggio sent a nice pass upfield to Stephen on the right but the play was defended and stymied. After a foul by the Patriots at the 2 minute mark, a free-kick from about 30 yards out dropped dangerously deep into the box near the goal mouth but Matt jumped up to punch it out and away. At the 5 minute mark, Jason served a free-kick from about 35 yards out on the right into the box where Sam was in position to head strike the ball but lost it in the sun and the ball was grabbed by the GK. At the 8 minute mark, Sam received a pass in the middle, dribbled in between several defenders and sent a nice pass towards the end line to Efe Halici on an overlapping run who had to make a back-heel pass to save the ball from going beyond the end line but it was possessed and cleared away by the Bluedevils. A couple other ensuing opportunities by Matt H. and Efe were defended and stymied. But, alas, at the 21 minute mark after a foul by the Bluedevils, Skylar served a free-kick from about 22 yards on the left into the box where Jason was in perfect position to flick-kick in the shot past the GK to put the Patriots up 1-0. The Patriots setup another scoring chance at the 24 minute mark with a dangerous throw-in into the box by Jason which was caught by the GK. Josh Kamdjou came in to help rev up the attack up top, and, at about the 28 minute mark a shot by Daniel R. from 18 yards on the left was caught by the GK. The Bluedevils sent another dangerous ball into the box at the 29 minute mark which Matt cleared, and one minute later, another ball in the box was cleared away by Skylar. At the 32 minute mark, Skylar served a ball in the box where Alex Kiener took a shot towards goal but it was blocked/deflected away. At the 35 minute mark, Springbrook sent a free-kick from about 40 yards out center deep into the box but Matt jumped up to grab the ball. One minute later, Stephen received a ball on the left side near mid-center, juked a defender who grabbed his jersey but the resultant free-kick was cleared away. At the 39 minute mark, Stephen received another ball near mid-field, juked another defender and dribbled deep into Bluedevils’ left flank and sent a leading pass to Max who ran onto the ball, turned and a fired a shot on goal which the GK caught. The Bluedevils would have one more chance for the equalizer goal in the final 40th minute off of a free kick from about 25 yards out center which Matt made a finger-tip save and the match ended, 1-0, Patriots. The Bluedevils were held to just 1 shot on goal and 1 corner kick while the Patriots managed only 3 shots on goal.

    Patriots Fall to Sherwood Warriors
    September 24, 2008
The Warriors edged the Patriots in a last minute goal last year at Sherwood and the Patriots were looking for a reversal of fortune in tonight's match at home against the talented Warriors who had just beaten Whitman the night before last, 2-0, with an overall 3-1 record (losing to QO last week, 1-2). Several Patriot players were sitting out for this match due to injuries including a key defender. Sherwood was strong on defense, quick up top and very solid in the middle with Jeff Juarez distributing the ball well and sending accurately placed free kicks. In the opening minutes, the Patriots were able to move the ball upfield with Efe Halici sending a nice pass to Jeff Robinson who worked his way close in to try a shot at about the 6 min. mark but he was defended well and the ball deflected behind the end for a corner kick which was unsuccessful. Several minutes later around the 10 min. mark, Efe sent another nice pass in the middle to Sam Hulsey who served a ball across the goal mouth but nobody was close by to finish. Just one min. later, Sam made a nice pass to Stephen Ho who served another ball across the goal but the Patriots could not finish. After a foul by the Patriots, Sherwood sent a free kick from 25 yds. right into the box and a Warrior player jumped up to head the ball into the right side of the net past Matt Black to put Sherwood up 1-0. A couple of minutes later, the Warriors served a couple more dangerous balls into/across the box which one of them was well struck towards goal that Matt was able to grab. The Warriors maintained control of the match not only with their solid play but due to many errant passes and misplayed balls by the Patriots. At about the 23 min. mark, the Warriors mounted another attack sending a ball upfield near the Patriot's 25 yds. left side but Matt Harlow's pass across the middle to the right to Jason Greenberg was intercepted by a Sherwood player who dribbled 1v1 a few yards on goal and sent an easy shot into the net past Matt. Sherwood kept up its attacks and counters, sending long balls deep into the Patriot's side. At about the 26 min. mark, Sherwood sent a long ball into the box which Matt jumped high up to grab, and 2 mins. later, Sherwood tossed a long, dangerous throw-in in the box that Matt punched away out of harms way. Just 1 min. later, after another well-placed ball was sent upfield into Wootton's side behind the back line, Matt raced off his line out to around 20 yds. center to head strike the ball away. He also grabbed a header in the box around the 35 min. mark, and as time expired, he jumped up to grab another long ball sent deep into the box. Sherwood's strong defense stymied the Patriots, holding them to no shots taken and just 1 corner kick while the Warriors would take 4 shots, no corners, and a 2-0 lead at the half.

Down two goals, in the 2nd half the Patriots kept their focus and played more determinedly. After a few trips up and down the field by both teams, Stephen stole a ball on the left side at about the 7 min. mark, worked his way upfield into Sherwood's half but was quickly defended/dispossessed of the ball. A couple of minutes later, Daniel Silversmith received a pass in the midfield and strongly held off several Warriors as he maneuvered the ball around to eventually pass the ball over to Stephen on the left side about 30 yds. who again skillfully dribbled his way deep into the Warrior's box but he was defended well and relieved of the ball. Sherwood countered and the back line was unable to clear the ball away before the Warriors sent a hard shot on goal which Matt caught. And, moments later, a miskicked ball in the back allowed Sherwood to take another shot from about 20 yds on the right which luckily sailed wide. At around the 19 min. mark, a through-ball made its way behind the back line and as Matt scrambled out to reach the ball, he slipped to the ground which allowed a Sherwood player to collect the ball and send it into the net to put the Warriors up 3-0. Just 1 min. later, Sam received a ball in the middle near the 18 yd. line, dribbled forward in between the defenders to about 6 yds. out center and passed the ball off to his right which was eventually possessed by the Warriors. The Patriots had several scoring chances and about 1 min. later, Daniel S. received a ball around 12 yds. out center and struck a ball towards goal but it was deflected away. At the 26 min. mark, Max Goldschein crossed a ball through the goal mouth from right to left but no one was nearby to finish. Two mins. later, Jason tossed a nice throw-in into the goal mouth and Stephen's header was caught by the GK. At the 30 min. mark, a misfired pass in the middle allowed a Warrior player to collect the ball and pass it ahead to a teammate who sent a shot into the net past Matt but fortunately, the play was nullified by an offsides call. Josh Stern, Kian Kassarei and Blake Band came in relief to help defend and contain the Warriors. At around the 34 min. mark, after a foul by Sherwood around 25 yds. slightly left of center, Efe took a hard, low free kick which zipped through the defenders but went wide just left of goal. David Shcherbelis took over in the net and made a nice stop on a hard shot from about 20 yds. center around the 37 min. mark. David also stopped another shot by Sherwood as the whistle blew at the 40 min. mark, and the matched ended, 3-0, Sherwood. The Warriors' tough defense held the Patriots to just 2 shots on goal while their offense launched 4 shots and setup 1 corner kick.

Patriots Battle Bulldogs to a Draw
    September 19, 2008
It was a huge turnout for the always hard-fought, very physical contests between the Patriots and arch-rival Churchill Bulldogs, and this match would be no different. Wootton's Drum Line was on hand and loudly beat to the roar of the crowd with many Wootton fans dressed in red cheering on the Patrtiots. In the mostly even first half, at about the 9 min. mark, the Patriots had the ball deep in the Bulldogs side and Jason Greenberg made a nice throw-in from the sideline into the box which dangerously caromed around until being cleared out with the Bulldogs launching a counter attack. The ball got behind the Patriot’s backline and slowly rolled towards the 18 yd. line. As GK Matt Black raced off his line to kick the ball away, Bulldog's striker Kevin Dansky ran onto the ball at the same time and the simultaneously struck ball deflected behind the end line for a goal kick. Around the 18 min. mark, Efe Halici sent a nice ball up to Stephen Ho on the right about 30 yds who dribbled upfield towards the end line but the play was eventually defended well with the ball tackled away. Two minutes later, a mirror play ensued with Efe to Stephen and it, too, was stymied. About the 34 min. mark, Skylar Olson possessed the ball on the right side and made a good run upfield, passing the ball off to Sam Hulsey in the midfield who dished it forward to Max Goldschein in the box who then turned and sent a shot towards the net which the GK caught. The Bulldogs and Patriots each were limited by their strong defenses to just 1 shot on goal and no corners taken and the half ended scoreless.

The intensity heated up in the second half and in the first min. a throw-in by Daniel Riggio to Ethan Alkon was stolen by Dansky and as he maneuvered the ball for a shot, Skylar slide-tackled the ball away. Several minutes later the Bulldogs were deep into the Patriots' side and sent a dangerous low ball across an open goal mouth but luckily no Bulldogs players were close by to finish a sure goal. At the 6 min. mark, a ball in the Patriot’s midfield could not be cleared away and as Matt came off his line to get to the ball, Dansky possessed the ball and dribbled towards goal. Skylar raced back to slide-tackle the ball away from Danksy, but he was able to maintain possession of the ball and sent a strike to the net to put the Bulldogs up, 1-0. A few minutes later, Skylar launched a nice free kick from 30-35 yds. out center into the box but no Wootton player was able to head it in as the ball was grabbed by the GK. The Bulldogs created a couple of dangerous scoring opportunities with balls in Wooton’s box but they were eventually cleared away after much frantic effort. Stephen made another nice run deep into the Bulldogs left corner but the play was broken up. At the 33 min. mark, Efe sent a nice pass upfield to Sam around 18 yds. on the right where he struck a shot on goal but it was caught by the GK. Matt made a couple of nice punch-out saves from two well-placed served balls in the box, and at the 39 min. mark, Matt made a great save off of a hard blast by Danksy. With just 1 min. left in the match, Stephen received a pass around 30-35 yds. on the left in the Bulldogs side, dribbled upfield a few yards and sent a nice through ball to Jeff Robinson who took one step forward and fired a shot/cross towards goal. Efe ran onto the ball as the GK was coming out, collected the ball and maneuvered around the GK to send a shot towards goal which deflected off the head of a defender over to Ethan on the far post who was in perfect position to jump up and headed the ball in for the equalizer goal with regulation time over seconds later. The Bulldogs would take 7 shots on goal with 2 corners while the Patriots were held to just a single shot on goal but created 5 corner kick situations.

In the 1st 10 min. OT period, at the 5 min. mark, Alex Kiener crossed a good ball from the right side into the box where Daniel Silversmith jumped up to head strike the ball towards goal but it was caught by the GK. Skylar was fouled hard from behind at about 22 yds. out center and the resultant free kick was unsuccessful. The Patriots would take 1 corner which was unsuccessful while holding the Bulldogs to no shots or corners.

In the 2nd 10 min. OT period, at about the 5 min. mark, Skylar attempted to kick/clear a ball away at the same time a Bulldogs player tried to kick the ball but caught Skylar’s right foot hard and play was stopped as he lay on the turf. Several minutes later, play resumed and after a furious back and forth in each other’s box with each team creating dangerous scoring threats, neither the Bulldogs or Wootton could manage the go-ahead, game-winning goal and the match ended in a tie, 1-1.

    WJ Defeats Wootton
    September 16, 2008
The momentum could not be sustained this evening as the talented WJ Wildcats moved the ball well offensively and were very strong defensively. Max Goldschein and Chris Kkokar were brought up from JV for some playing experience as the situation would allow. Michael Yoon joined the squad after a long rehab of shoulder injury. WJ setup several attacks and counters in the opening minutes. At about the 6 minute mark, Danny Kawamura made a good save near the end line before the ball could be crossed. Several minutes later, WJ made a nice run on the right side past the back line and fired a shot on goal which Matt Black caught. Stephen Ho came out of nowhere to run down a deep run in the back, challenging and clearing the ball away. Skylar Olson sent a well-placed free kick from about 20 yds. out on the right into the box far post but no Patriot player was nearby to finish. Stephen sent a nice cross off a pass form Skylar into the box and again nobody could finish. Danny K. sent a nice ball upfield to Alex Kiener but the play was stymied by WJ. At about the 12 minute mark, as the back line was moving up behind a Patriot attack, the Wildcats dispossessed the ball from the Patriots and chipped a ball over the back line to a player who ran past the defenders and as Matt came off his line the ball was lofted up and over Matt into the net for the go-ahead goal. Daniel Riggio, Sam Hulsey and Dan Silversmith played strong in the middle but were challenged and pressured continuously by WJ. Daniel R. had several good tackles after shifting to the back and so did Dan S. in the middle. But, the Patriots could not punch in a goal as the Wildcats' strong D held the Patriots to just 3 shots on goal, including a couple of not-full-strength shots by Stephen towards goal which were grabbed by the GK., and the half ended, 1-0, WJ.

In the second half, the Patriots were able to deny the Wildcats any further goals. In the opening minutes, Skylar served another free kick from 22 yds. out into the box but no Patriot player was close enough to strike in the ball. WJ countered with a play upfield on the left to #5 who dribbled past defenders on the right side and launched a hard shot which fortunately sailed high over the cross-bar. Josh Kamdjou came in and played hard again today but was denied by WJ's defense from any scoring opportunity. WJ threatened on a couple of counters around the 16 and 18 minute marks, sending balls upfield to onside players speeding ahead and behind the back line, and as Matt came off his line twice, Skylar quickly raced back and cleared away the almost certain shots/goals. Ethan Alkon challenged a ball simultaneously with a WJ player in the midfield and lay on the turf for a minute or two before being helped to the sidelines but would return to action awhile later. The Patriots had a good scoring chance with a throw-in into the box by Jason Greenberg around the 30 minute mark, and after a melee ensued, the ball deflected outward to Stephen around 18 yds. center/right who fired a blast that sailed high and wide of goal. Around the 33 minute mark, Skylar sent another long ball into the midfield to Michael who made a nice pass to a streaking Stephen on the left but the play was stymied by WJ's strong defense. With about 1 minute left, Efe took a shot from around 20 yds. out on the right which sailed high and wide of goal. The Patriots would take 3 shots on goal and setup 4 corner kick opportunites which were all unsuccessful, while the Wildcats would take 5 shots on goal, and the match ended, 1-0, WJ.

    Patriots Prevail Over Blake
    September 15, 2008
The Patriots kept their momentum going from the WM game on Sat., controlling play mostly throughout the match except for a couple of precarious situations setup by the Bengals. Freshman Max Goldschein returned from JV for another opportunity to play and get some experience against Blake. The Patriots created numerous opportunities on Blake's half in the opening minutes with a nice run by Jeff Robinson and a good pass from Efe Halici to Drew Ricci but both plays were stymied by the defense. Sam Hulsey, Daniel Riggio and Dan Silversmith played solid in the middle. Sam took a shot from 25 yds. center but it was caught by the GK. Danny Kawamura, Matt Harlow, Jason Greenberg and Skylar Olson played strong in the back. Skylar sent a long ball upfield to Jeff who crossed a nice ball in the goal mouth to Drew whose header missed wide. Blake broke through the right back line and fired a hard upper 90 shot which Matt Black made a nice finger-tip save to deflect it over the cross bar. The much-improved Bengals again countered around the 18 minute mark with a dangerous ball in the Patriots goal area with Matt off his line, but fortunately, as Blake took a shot on the open goal, Skylar quickly raced in to kick it away. Several minutes later, Stephen Ho served a nice corner kick into the goal mouth but it was snatched by the GK. A few minutes later, at about the 25 minute mark, Stephen made a nifty run in between defenders and fired a strike into the net to put the Patriots up, 1-0. Efe took a strong shot from around 30 yds. out but it sailed high and away. Josh Kamdjou worked hard while on the pitch and maneuvered to send a blast from 20 yds. left that also went high. The Bengals sent a dangerous corner kick in the box but it was finally cleared out of harms way. Ethan Alkon took a shot that went high, and with about 1 minute left in the half, Matt Harlow pushed upfield and fired a shot on goal which was caught by the GK. The Patriots took 7 shots on goal and 3 corner kicks while holding Blake to 2 shots and 1 corner, and the half ended, 1-0, Wootton.

In the second half, the Patriots created a corner kick opportunity at the 2 minute mark. Skylar took a quick kick and served the ball into the box where Efe struck the ball towards goal but it luckily deflected to where Drew was in perfect position to boot in the ball to put the Patriots up, 2-0. Blake again countered, serving a dangerous ball into the box but Matt H. headed it away. Jason sent a nice throw-in into the box where Jeff fired a shot that went just over the cross-bar. The Bengals played much more physical in the second half but would manage just 1 shot on goal from about 20 yds. out which was caught by Matt. Skylar sent another nice long ball upfield to Alex Kiener on the left who dribbled towards goal but was fouled/tackled hard from behind in the box at the 27 minute mark. Skylar sent the resultant PK shot into the net past the GK. Josh Stern, Kian Kassraei and Blake Band came in and worked hard, challenging every ball that came their way, and, David Shcherbelis relieved Matt in the net with some solid minutes in the latter part of the half. Jeff sent a nice pass upfield to Josh K. who launched a shot from about 22 yds. left that sailed high over the cross bar. Jason made another nice throw-in in the box where Josh K. ran onto the ball and as the GK came out, chested in the goal but it was nullified by an offsides call. The Patriots would take 5 shots and setup 3 corners while Blake managed just 1 shot and the match ended, 3-0, Patriots.

Wootton Bounces Back in Win vs. Watkins Mill
    September 13, 2008
It was a hot and steamy early evening for this single tournament game with WM. Due to a couple of injured varsity players, Coach Schuessler brought up 4 JV players, Chris Khokhar (41), Max Goldschein (35), Antoine Plante (40) and Zach Robinson (38) to give them some experience as the game situation would allow.

The Patriots appeared much more structured in their offense tonight with Sam Hulsey, Daniel Silversmith and Daniel Riggio distributing the ball well in the middle and with strikers, Drew Ricci and Stephen Ho, making good runs deep behind the Wolverine’s backline as well as midfielder, Jeff Robinson, executing some nice overlapping runs. Just 2 mins. into the match, Daniel Riggio dished a nice pass to Sam around 20 yds. right who fired a shot on goal but it was caught by the GK. However, at the 10 minute mark, after a throw-in by Jason Greenberg was cleared back out to Jason around 25 yds. on the right, he then served a nice ball into the box where Drew, who was just inserted into the game, was in perfect position in the goal mouth to head the ball in past the GK to put the Patriots up, 1-0. At about the 16 min. mark, Danny Kawamura maneuvered his way up upfield on the left and made a nice pass to Drew around 10-12 yds. out center who headed the ball just wide of net. Just 1 min. later, Sam sent a pretty pass from the middle to Stephen around 30 yds. on the right but the play was stymied. Drew would find pay dirt again 10 minutes later. At the 21 minute mark, Jeff received a ball on the left near midfield, skillfully dribbled his way upfield in between defenders to the far corner where he sent a cross into the goal mouth and Drew kicked the ball in the net to put the Patriots up 2-0. Chris, Max and Antoine saw action in the first half and battled well with Max taking a blow to the face off a deflected ball and a hard body shot knocking him to the turf. Josh Kamdjou and Kian Kassraei came in and played hard with Josh being knocked to the turf on several occasions.

After thwarting WM for most of the half, at about the 39 min. mark, a WM striker received a long ball upfield and penetrated into the left backline and as several defenders tried to contain him from shooting, he managed to take a shot from about 10-12 yds. out which was deflected off of a defender and sailed upward, high-arcing over Matt into the net for a fortuitous goal, and the half ended, 2-1, Patriots. In the first half, the Patriots would take 6 shots and 3 corners while WM managed just 3 shots including a near strike that hit the cross bar from about 18 yds. out.

In the second half, the Patriots appeared to be less structured and could not setup any shooting opportunities but credit WM’s defense, although 3 corners were taken but were unsuccessful. The Wolverines were much determined and managed 3 shots on goal including a hard blast form 25 yds. out center which GK Matt Black made a finger-tip save to deflect it over the cross bar. WM also set up 3 corners but all went awry and the match ended, 2-0, Patriots.

Patriots Drop Home Opener vs. B-CC
    September 9, 2008
The Patriots hung tough in the first half, weathering a wave of attacks and counters by last year's 3A Champs, B-CC Barons. Senior GK, Matt Black, made two outstanding saves on a couple hard blasts. The Barons launched 7 shots and 1 corner kick but were held from finishing a goal due to strong defensive effort in the back by Matt Harlow, Jason Greenberg, Danny Kawamura and anchored by Skylar Olson. The Patriots managed 4 shots and 1 corner kick which were unsuccessful, and the half ended scoreless.

In the second half, the Patriots again created 4 shooting opportunities while setting up 5 corners but all were unsuccessful. The Barons took 5 shots and Matt made two more great saves. At the 6 minute mark, B-CC sent what would be 1 of 6 corner kicks into the box and as Matt jumped up to grab the ball, a B-CC player also jumped up and headed the ball into the net, appearing to have bumped Matt aside. Stephen Ho made several threatening runs deep into the Barons' backline but was turned away by the solid Barons defenders.

The Patriots had their chances offensively throughout the match. Efe Halici penetrated into the Barons side from the midfield on several occasions, firing a few shots which unluckily went wide or were stopped. Drew Ricci also broke through the defense on several opportunities and launched a shot which went awry. Daniel Silversmith effectively distributed the ball to teammates to setup several chances. On the right side, Sam Hulsey sent a couple of shots towards the net but didn’t find the back of the net. Alex Kiener and Daniel Riggio played determinedly, pressuring/repossessing the ball and making some good passes to their teammates. Coming in to relieve 4-5 injured and fatigued players in the 2nd half, Blake Band, Josh Stern, Josh Kamdjou and Kian Kassrei all fought hard to the finish, but, the Barons, with excellent movement of the ball and swift strikers up top, would find the net twice more at the 24 and 31 minute marks after balls were unable to be effectively cleared away in the box, and the match ended, 3-0, Barons.

All rising Juniors/Seniors should bring all required paperwork at 7:30AM, and all rising Freshmen/Sophomores should do the same at 8:00AM. Specifically, every player must bring completed forms, including:

    1. MCPS Parent Permission Form
    2. Health/Medical Card
    3. Health Inventory (Physical)

Each of these forms is available via the Wootton Athletics home page on the Wootton website, as well as in the main office at school. All players must have provided each of these forms before being allowed to participate in tryouts ... no exceptions!

In addition, each player that is selected for the team must have submitted their ECA (ExtraCurricular Activity) Form and accompanying fee ($30 last year ... TBD amount for this coming year). Though this is not required until team selection occurs, you are encouraged to take care of this very early if you are confident of being selected for this or any other extracurricular activity during the remainder of the school year.

This is a tentative schedule of activities from preseason through our first regular season game, subject to change:

Wootton Players Receive Fall 2007 Postseason Honors!
Congratulations to Andy Streilein on being selected for the Montgomery County All-County team, and to Ryan Gracia on being named Montgomery County's Player of the Year. What makes these honors especially meaningful is that they are voted on by the various coaches of Montgomery County high school varsity teams after watching the boys play all season. Andy also received All-State Honorable Mention honors, and Ryan was selected to the All-State First Team.

In addition, Ryan was selected as the All-Met Player of the Year, becoming the first Wootton boys player in history to receive that honor. Congratulations to both Ryan and Andy on their well-deserved awards!

Congratulations to Stephen McRae and Marcus Ranney on being named to the Coaches All-County team and to Marcus for being named to the All-State team for Fall 2006!
