Lady Lakers Cap Off Winning Season With Two Ties
The Lady Lakers would travel to Chester and Florida to take on their two toughest opponents in the past week. Coming away with two ties did not tell the story of how well the Lakers would play in both contests. With some rough and tumble play Team Green would come back from a one goal deficit vs. Chester in the final quarter as Amanda Agostini would notch her first modified goal. Also scoring in the contest was Sheryl Martin who led the team in goals scored this season. Ashley Addonisio and Kaylah Pinkney combined to make 16 saves in the contest. The Lady Lakers were unable to beat Chester this season but did play well enough to record two ties, which helped to secure a winning season going into their final game vs. S.S. Seward.
The Lakers would take on the S.S. Seward Spartans in their final game Wednesday, which was a game that had been rescheduled from a rainout previously. The Lakers would take an early lead as Kayleene Manana recorded her first modified goal in her last game as an eighth grade player. The Lakers would play tough defense throughout getting contributions from Samantha Kelm, Danielle McNamamra, Kayla Naughton, Karolina Krutka, Deirdre Hallinan, and Sally Warnock. The defense held the Spartans scoreless until late into the final quarter when darkness and fatigue would give in to pressure in the box. The Spartans would get a shot to bank of the post to tie the game at 1-1. The Lakers would push hard on offense the remainder of the quarter but were unable to find the net, as the game would end in a 1-1 tie..
The Lakers would end the season with 5 wins, 3 loses, and 3 ties....
Cron's Corner
I am very proud of this year’s team. We played hard against our rivals and we never quit. As a result we finished with a winning record. Once again I'm sorry to see my eighth graders go but I look forward to next season with some real prospects moving up. I want to give a shout to Jamie Hoogmoed who played her cleats off for me and even though she did not score a goal it was not for her lack of trying. You will be a good jv/varsity player kid so keep up the good work and that goal will come. Thanks team for a great year....Coach
Rainout Game vs. S.S.Seward
The home game that was rained out vs. S.S. Seward on Wed. October 28th will not be made up..
Lakers Rebound After Tough Loss
After being shut out 2-0 by Chester on Thursday the Lakers rebounded to blank Chapel Field on Friday 4-0. Goal scorers included Allison Toscano (2), Sheryl Martin, and Amanda Torres. Ashley Addonisio, Kaylah Pinkney and Sierra Sheridan combined for 6 saves in goal in the lopsided contest. The Lakers have three games remaining on their schedule two vs. S.S. Seward and one vs. the only team that they have not beaten this season Chester. Next game will be the last home game vs. Seward on Wed. October 28th at 4:00.
Cron's Corner
We played pretty well this week but we are still having problems finding the net especially vs. Chester. We have one more shot at them. The team is still excited and we could end up with a winning record if we can tie one and win one. Come cheer us on for our final three games!!!
Laker's Roll 7 On Chapel
The Lady Lakers faced off with Chapel Field for the third time this season and with the Chapel Field Lion's best player Megan McGowan out the Lakers would roll to an easy 7-0 win. Seventh grade sensations Sheryl Martin and Allison Toscano would score two goals each and after a long wait Kerri Burton would score her first modified goal. Alicia Grimes and Amanda Torres would also rip nylon for Team Green. Sarah Beattie would help out with an assist to add to her team-leading total. Kaylah Pinkney would see most of the time in net but Sierra Sheridan would log her first minutes as a goaltender making two saves before time would run out. The Lakers will take on Chester in a make-up game tomorrow with an early game time of 3:15 pm.
Cron's Corner
Not much of a contest without Megan in the game. The Lions fought a hard and I'm sure when we face of with them on Friday they will have all their guns. We get another shot at Chester Thursday and I know the girls want a win. They are the only team we have not beat this season and we get two more cracks at it....
Game vs. Chester Rescheduled For 10/22/09
The Monday game vs. Chester has been rescheduled for 10/22/09 at 3:15 pm
The game vs. S.S. Seward has not been rescheduled at this time.
Laker's D Toughen's Up In 0-0 Tie
After a rough game vs. S.S. Seward Team Green wanted a little revenge vs. the Chester Hambletonians who had end "The Streak." The Lady Lakers would have to toughen up the defense in order to have a chance due to their lack of scoring. The first quarter started with some pushing and shoving in the midfield as both teams tried to move the ball into a scoring position. The Lady Lakers would show they were up to the task as Carolyn Campagna would clamp down on #4 Heather Fraser preventing her from getting any kind of open space for a shot. The Lakers would spend most of the quarter in the Chester side of the field but shots would not find their mark and a solid Chester defense would keep the Lakers off the board. As each quarter worn on both teams would find minimal chances for scoring and when there was an open shot neither team was able to execute a shot that would test a goalie's true skills. The game wore on and on and on with no scoring. The defense started to give up small chances on both sides as Sheryl Martin would find an opening but even with a powerful kick the ball would sail over the net and the score would remain 0-0.
As last quarter neared Chester had it's best opportunity of the game crossing the ball right in front of the net. The ball would roll all the way across just waiting for a welcome foot but Ashley Addonisio would track it down and dive on the loose ball. The game would end with Chester getting some pressure in the box but Danielle McNamara would clear it out and the game would end 0-0. The Laker's did not get the revenge they were looking for but they did show grit and toughness to hold a team that beat them earlier to zero goals.
Cron's Corner
We played as good as we could defensively but we are still having trouble scoring. The goalies we have faced this season seem to be much better than last season and they have defended some tough shots. We just have to keep working hard and we will score. I was happy they played a good game but they want to beat Chester for ending the streak and how can you blame them..

Triumphant Spartans Get First Win Vs. Lakers In Three Years
The Lakers traveled to the cornfields Tuesday to face rival S.S. Seward for the second time this season. The results would be very different this time around as Team Green would break down defensively and allow 4 goals in the contest.
The Lakers would strike first as Sierra Sheridan would assist Sheryl Martin early in the first quarter. After that goal the Laker's had no answer for the pressure the Spartan's would throw down. With a 1-0 lead going into the second quarter Seward would score 3 goals in less than a two minute time period. With some sloppy defense Kayla Pinkney would have no chance in goal. The Lakers did not give up and kept shooting but the Seward goalie was up to the task allowing only one goal the rest of the game. The Lakers would not find the net again and they would suffer their second loss of the season.
Cron's Corner
Well it's back to the drawing board. We are having a very rough time this season especially not connecting on many of the easy opportunities we have had. I knew losing the great defense we had last season would hurt but if we could only put the ball in the net we would not have to put so much pressure on our D to post a shutout every game. We are going to go back to basics in practice and we will have to see what we can bring to the table vs. Chester on Thursday..

Laker's Start New Winning Streak Shutting Out Chapel
It didn't take too long to get over the loss, as the Greenwood Lake Lady Lakers would hit the road to Chapel Field Friday. With some work on shooting during practice Coach Cron would make the girl's stay out in a chilly rain Thursday afternoon. The team needed to improve on their shooting and take advantage of the opportunities they get during games. They wasted no time Friday, as Sheryl Martin would put Gang Green on the board early in the first. The A team defense would take over after that not allowing a shot on goal the entire first quarter. The Lakers would take a 1-0 lead to the second.
In the second quarter Racheal Sebastian would show why Coach Cron wanted to keep her around after cuts. Rachael boomed the ball whenever it reached midfield. With some help from her friends Samantha Kelm, Danielle McNamara, and Deirdre Hallinan the B Team defense dominated the Chapel Field Lions. Keeping the ball on the Lions side of the field Alicia Grimes would give the Lakers a 2-0 lead as she sliced a low liner past a lunging Lions goalkeeper. The Lakers would have a comfortable lead with a defense playing very strong.
During the third and fourth quarters the Lakers would get plenty of chances on goal but inconsistent shots didn't help pad the lead. It wasn't until Sarah Beattie ripped a long right-footed boot to the corner that would help ice the win for Team Green. Kayla Pinkney played 3 quarters in goal and she didn't see much action saving only 4 shots.
Cron's Corner
I went through every emotion about the loss vs. Chester that a coach could have. Ultimately I blame myself because even though we are not as experienced as we have been in the past it still comes back to a better game plan. Mainly though I'm kinda glad it's past us now and there is no more pressure. We can just move on and have a fun successful soccer season. I told them that we have not played our best game yet. When we do it will be awesome. This is a great group of kids.
"The Streak Ends"
There were some sad faces and a few tears as the Lady Lakers finally lost a game after three undefeated season and 33 consecutive wins. The Chester Hambletonians didn't know about "The Streak" and even if they did I don't think that would have changed anything. The Lakers had a tough time controlling the ball throughout the first quarter. They spent much of their time trying to fend off number 4 Heather Fraser, Chester's tough striker who kept attacking the net. With only a few minutes left in the first quarter Fraser found an open corner and drilled a screamer into the back of the net.
The Lakers would need to the B squad to hold it together and try to get something going. As the second quarter got underway the Lakers would move the ball better offensively but they were unable to get off any great shots. They held their ground and they would not allow any goals in the period.
Still down 1-0 the A squad would play better defensively and they started to find Sheryl Martin and Kerri Burton on the wing. Burton found a good shot but kicked it wide as the Lakers looked for the tie. Once again the period would end down 1-0.
The fourth quarter would finally be time for Gang Green to get on the board as Isabella Zaccardi would find Alicia Grimes open in front of the net and gave her a perfect feed for a one-timer passes a diving Carly Morano. The goal knotted the game a 1-1 but the good times did not last for Squad B as a lapse on defense gave way to an easy goal for Chester and they were able to take a 2-1 lead right before the final quarter #5.
Quarter number 5 was controlled by Team Green as Coach Cron would put all his scorers in the game. The Lakers would have plenty of chances but they could not find an open lane to get off a big hit. The Chester defense would hold, as time seemed to fly by. And with a sharp whistle it was over....final score Chester 2 - Lakers 1...
Cron's Corner
I was upset at first and then the more I thought about it I was a little irked about how we played. Then the emotions went to being kinda glad the pressure is off and we can get back to normal. The run we had was incredible and I won't forget it for a long time. I had great teams and great kids. This years team is not as experienced as those teams but they have a lot of heart and energy. I know we can still have a successful season. The next time we play Chester we will have to make sure that we spoil their unbeaten. Well I'm off to start a new streak! Hope it's half as good as the first one...
Rivalry Renewed With 3-2 Victory!
Last time the Laker's took on S.S. Seward it was a bitterly cold day in the "Creepy Corn Field." The Lakers won a close contest that day and both teams are back for another season of knocking shin guards. This season the two rivals will hook up 4 times instead of 3.
Scoring in this contest was fast and furious as Seward’s striker found some room up the middle and booted a low liner passed a diving Ashley Addonisio. Down 1-0 the Lakers would work hard getting several shots off during the quarter. After a pushing foul Carolyn Campagna would take a direct kick from just outside the penalty box. Her shot sailed over the goalies hands putting the Lakers on the board. Quarter one ended with a 1-1 tie.
Quarter number two would see a Lakers B squad start to get a nice rhythm. Precision passing and strong midfield play from Sarah Beattie would help the ball to the wing. Right-winger Allison Toscano has been a real welcome addition to the team, as once again she would collect a nice pass from Beattie and streak towards the post. With a solid running shot Toscano would give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. The lead would not hold up however as Kayla Pinkney would what looked like a nice save but the ball tricked out of her hands and rolled just over the line. Quarter two ended at 2-2
In the 3rd Q Sheryl Martin would get her first goal as a modified player dribbling through the defense and hitting a hard runner past the outstretched hands of the Spartans goalie. The Lakers would get one more scoring chance in the quarter when Jamie Hoogmoed would get a nice pass from Sierra Sheridan but she kicked it just wide of the post. Lakers ended the period with a one-goal lead.
In the final quarter the Lakers B-Squad would D-Up allowing only one shot on goal and that shot came just as the whistle sounded. The ball was 30 feet in the air and fell into the waiting arms of Pinkney and the Lakers would pull off another one goal victory. The contest lived up to the usual Lakers/Spartans expectations.
Cron's Corner
This was your typical back and forth game vs. Seward. The B squad is starting to get used to playing with each other now and they have picked it up defensively. we have 3 more games with Seward so I'm sure they will all be close. See you on Wed. for Chester. Coach
Laker's Tire Out Lions In 3-0 Shutout
The 2009/2010 season brings some rebuilding as Coach Cron lost his entire A Team defense from last season. Names like Crandall, DeLaRosa, and Fagan have moved onto wearing red and white. They will be missed but an eager new group has come in focus for Team Green. The Lakers have been very successful the past three seasons due to their stifling defense and controlled team play. That is what they will continue to do to produce another terrific season. The Laker's would be tested by a Chapel Field squad that came to play Tuesday at GWLMS. Gang Green was a little over confident and played like it for the first 5 minutes. Coach Cron would have a "discussion" with his team during a time out to make sure they were ready to play. It was apparent that the Lions had one exceptional player in #7 Megan McGowan as she penetrated the Lakers penalty box three times in quarter #1. With some adjustments the Lakers would hold the Lions striker to two shots and the quarter would end at 0-0.
The Lakers would send the very inexperienced B squad in Q2 to face the same group of Lions that were out there during Q1. The Lakers would switch to a four across defense to prevent McGowan or any other Lion from getting a hard shot on rookie goalie Kayla Pinkney. The strategy would work, as the Lakers would hold the score at 0-0 for the entire period as they made the Lions work for every loose ball and 50/50 ball. For as much inexperience as the Lakers B squad has they would see some excellent defense from Racheal Sebastian, Samantha Kelm and strong mid-field kicks from Isabella Zaccardi.
The third quarter the Lakers would finally get it in gear as Carolyn Campagna would barrel up the middle of the field and rip a shot from just inside the box. The ball would find the corner of the net as the Lakers took a 1-0 lead. With continued tough defense and blanket coverage on McGowan the Lakers would end the quarter 1-0.
The final quarter would see a Lakers B squad with a lot less nerves. They were confident and calculated with what they wanted to accomplish. They had worn out the Lions and they kept on running. Alicia Grimes would lead the offense as she would find the net and assist on a Allison Toscano runner into the back of the net. The Lions had no answer for the continued pressure the Lakers pounded down. In the end the contest was competitive and spirited, as Gang Green would once again play big at home. Final score Lakers 3 Chapel Field 0..
Cron's Corner
It was either nerves or overconfidence that we got off to a slow start. Maybe it was both but we were able to tough our way through a very good team of only 13 Chapel Field Lady Lions. This team has the ability they just need to trust each other, stay in position, and do their job. It was a tough game for me because I did not know where everyone belongs just yet. So now we move on to Thursday to play our good ole rival S.S. Seward. We need to have a good practice and work on kicking a ball that’s moving instead of a stationary ball..Thursday should be interesting!
