KENNESAW - Even though Harrison and McEachern appear to be in rebuilding mode, there is still no love lost between the two Area 5AAAAA rivals.

After McEachern staked a 21-20 lead following 215-pounder Sean Kimmerling's pin over Harrison's Jake Shumpert, the Hoyas captured victories in the next five weight classes - picking up 30 unanswered points during the spurt - to claim a 50-27 win Wednesday at Harrison.

"These two teams are pretty much starting over to the same extent," first-year Harrison coach Tom Fiacco said. "Most of the kids on both teams are first-time wrestlers and we're both just adjusting to the changes."

The triumph was especially sweet for Hoyas senior KJ Bell, who won via forfeit at 125.

"There is a lot of tension between Harrison and McEachern when it comes to wrestling," Bell said. "Last year was the first year (this class) had beat them. So, we really wanted to come out (Wednesday) and get a repeat victory."

Alex Condon led off for Harrison with a technical fall win at 135 pounds, but Darius Jackson (140) scored a pin in 4:06 to put the Indians on top, 6-5. The teams traded wins again with the Indians' Joey Visockis (145) and the Hoyas' Jared York (152) picking up wins by decision and major decision, respectively.

With the score deadlocked at 9-all, Harrison won two straight matches behind a technical fall for John Koszalkowski (160) and a win by disqualification for KJ Adams (171), giving the Hoyas a 20-9 advantage. McEachern responded to take the lead as Jake Taylor posted a forfeit win at 189 prior to Kimmerling's win.

The Hoyas and their home crowd grew energized after Lisandro Sagastume's pin 2:47 into his match at 285. Sagastume's win sparked an 18-point run for Harrison, bolstered by a pin in 1:32 for Ryan Wendt (103). Lucas Mosher was the beneficiary of another McEachern disqualification at 112.

Peter Mosher (119) followed suit with six points of his own after a pin in 2:26 that gave the Hoyas a resounding lead, 44-21. Reigning state runner-up Bell, who was scheduled to wrestle the Indians' three-time state champion, Brandon Westerman, was moved down to 125 pounds and won via forfeit to cap the 30-0 run.

Westerman took the mat for the final match of the night and easily dispatched his opponent for a 25-10 technical fall, sending the young Indians home with their second straight loss to the Hoyas.

"I'm really proud of our kids," Fiacco said. "Our first year wrestlers really got us going and we pulled away with our veterans."

    Condon Wins Senior Nationals
    By Carlton D. White
    Marietta Daily Journal Sports Writer

While much of the country is locked on the outcomes of the NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments, another national tournament unfolded last weekend.

More than 2,100 wrestlers from every state in the nation competed at the 19th annual National High School Wrestling Championships and Coaches Convention in Virginia Beach, Va.

Among the participants was Harrison's Josh Condon, who battled through a 75-man tournament field to claim the 152-pound national title in the National High School Seniors Championship - the crown jewel of the event.

"I'm really proud that I won this tournament," said Condon. "I really can't put it into words. This tournament wasn't easy to win. I had to wrestle smart and slow down my matches in order to get points."

A three-time Georgia state champion, Condon was one of 323 state champions entered in the National Seniors tournament. The overall field included 19 four-time state champions, 39 three-time champions and 76 two-time champions.

"This was my first time competing in this event," said Condon, who has signed with the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. "It was very different from (the) state (tournament) because you couldn't ease up on anybody. Everybody there was a state champion and knew how to wrestle. I had to go in with a completely different mindset."

"This tournament really helps kids get noticed by colleges," said Harrison coach Josh Stephen. "Josh had signed early, so entering him into this tournament was really about pitting him against the best of the best in the country to see how he'd do. Winning it just validates what a tremendous wrestler he is."

The 2008 Marietta Daily Journal/Cobb County Wrestler of the Year, Condon, who improved his career record to 213-11 and was ranked fifth in the nation entering the event, recorded a 6-0 mark at the tournament, beating two-time North Dakota state champion Tyler Johnson, 6-5, for the title. En route to the championship, Condon, who received a first-round bye, won matches in every way possible, including a 21-3 technical fall win in the second round, a 10-7 decision victory in the third round, a pin in 3:11 in the round of 16, a 13-5 major decision in the quarterfinals and a 5-4, double-overtime win in the semifinals.

"This was a way for Josh to finish out his season the best way he can and to give him some more competition," said Stephen. "He took a short break after state and trained and prepared for this match. He's had a phenomenal career."

The National High School Seniors Wrestling Championships is open to any high-school senior wrestler who has been a finalist in his high school state tournament or the National Prep Championships, with several wild-card entries through a petition system. The top eight place finishers in each weight class were officially declared High School Senior All-Americans.

In his state tournament edition of his Class AAAAA wrestling report, Georgia state wrestling afficianado Bob Berg used a quote from the film "Terminator" to describe Harrison 152-pounder, Josh Condon:

"Come with me if you wanna live! I'm here to help you. Listen and understand. That terminator is out there. It can't be bargained with, it can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear, and it absolutely will not stop. Ever. Until you are dead."

How does Condon feel about this description?

"I guess it fits," he said. "That's his opinion and I'm OK with it."

Condon was, in a way, like a machine on the mats this season, battling to a 60-1 record. His only loss was in the championship match of the prestigious Powerade Invitational tournament in Pennsylvania.

In the second half of the season, Condon was unstoppable. He won the Cobb County Invitational, the Area 5AAAAA championship and the Class AAAAA state title.

For his prowess and efforts on the mats, Josh Condon has been selected the 2007-08 Marietta Daily Journal/Cobb County Wrestler of the Year.

"This is really a great honor," he said. "It feels good to have this distinction."

Over the course of the season, Condon, who didn't lose a match in the state of Georgia and hasn't lost in Georgia since he was a freshman, won the grueling Ironman Invitational in Ohio, placed first at the McCallie Invitational in Tennessee and won at the Whitewater Invitational.

Harrison coach Josh Stephen echoed Berg's reference to Condon as a "Terminator"-like figure.

"Josh is a tough, poised and focused wrestler," Stephen said. "He's very cool when he wrestles and he doesn't get rattled by anything. His mental toughness is what gives him his drive to succeed.

"His potential is through the roof and I could see him winning a national championship in college."

Condon credited his father, Jim, and Stephen for their guidance in making him such a standout wrestler

Prior to the start of the 2007-08 season, Harrison wrestling coach Josh Stephen and assistant Lee Roper put a plan in motion.

"We started out wanting to do a documentary on (Harrison senior) Josh Condon, but it went from Condon to a bigger thing about the entire team," said Stephen.

The reason why was quite simple.

"We had a really strong feeling that this team was going to be special," he continued. "We felt like we could compete for a state title and challenge any team in Georgia."

Stephen's wasn't far off the mark. He guided his Hoya squad to a second-place finish at the Class AAAAA Duals State Championship and a runner-up showing in the traditional championship.

For his efforts and his squad's consistent performance throughout the course of the season, Stephen is the 2007-08 Marietta Daily Journal/Cobb County Wrestling Coach of the Year.

"This is a really big honor," said Stephen, who just completed his sixth season as coach of the Hoyas and received the award for the first time in his career. "There are so many tremendous coaches in Cobb County and several great teams that we compete against - it's just great to be honored in such a way.

"This award is really about the kids and my coaching staff because they all worked really hard this season and put forth a tremendous effort."

Harrison's effort on the mats resulted in turning a difficult and grueling schedule into one filled with lots of hardware and national attention and respect.

"We were a very confident team heading into the season," said Stephen. "I put together a schedule to reflect that. We wanted to travel and compete in big tournaments across the country. Some people counted us out and doubted we'd be this good, but I think we did okay."

Harrison finished 20th out of nearly 60 schools at the prestigious Ironman Tournament in Ohio. The Hoyas won the McCallie (Tenn.) Tournament and finished 11th among the 50 entrants at the Powerade Invitational in Pennsylvania.

Harrison concluded the season with a 20-7 dual record. Five of those losses occurred at the Clash in Minnesota, which is considered the No. 1 dual meet in the nation. The Hoyas sent an injury-depleted team to the Clash, but Stephen was more excited about the bigger picture and what his team accomplished.

"I'm very proud of our team," said Stephen, whose coaching philosophy is for his wrestlers to out work and out-train everyone else. "We knew what we were getting into this season and we made a great run."

Along with the impressive results at national meets and the two second-place finishes at the state meets, Stephen's Hoyas posted solid results in their Area 5AAAAA tournaments as well, sweeping the are dual and traditional championships and placing second at the Cobb County Invitational.

"This was a really great season," Stephen said. "We needed a couple more breaks to catch Collins Hill (for first place in the state dual and traditional championship). We weren't satisfied, but we'll take it."

And how does Stephen feel about that documentary?

"The production company is putting it together right now," he said. "It will show the ups and downs of our season and capture real moments of our attempts at winning a state title, which is what all coaches strive to do."

Harrison Hoyas 2008 Traditional State Runners Up

    By Carlton D. White
    Mareitta Daily Journal Sports Writer

DULUTH - Cobb County wrestlers won multiple championships in more ways than one Saturday on the final day of competition in the GHSA State Traditional Wrestling Championships inside the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

Five wrestlers took home Class AAAAA individual titles at the event, including one repeat winner and two three-peat winners.

Harrison senior Josh Condon wrapped up his stellar career as a Hoya with his third straight state title, defeating Collins Hill's Gary Tiller, 5-3, at 152 pounds.

"It's great to win another state title," Condon said. "I felt like I was in control the entire match, even though the score was close. I had wrestled him before so I kind of knew what to expect.

"I've had an unbelievable career at Harrison and I owe it to (Harrison) coach (Josh) Stephen and my dad for getting me to where I am today."

Harrison junior Brian Westerman also had a close match at 119 pounds. Westerman battled Union Grove's Ryan Devita to a 2-2 draw at the end of regulation and needed triple overtime to defeat him, 4-2.

Westerman earned a two-point takedown in the first 30 seconds of the third overtime and held Devita on the mat for the next 30 seconds to earn his third straight championship.

"It feels great to win another championship," Westerman said. "I was a little nervous going into the overtime sessions, but I kept my cool and stayed focused the whole time."

Cobb's other multiple winner was Sprayberry junior Alex Hudson, who claimed his second consecutive title after defeating KJ Bell of Harrison, 5-0, at 125 pounds.

"That was a tough match I wrestled, but it feels amazing to win," said Hudson.

"Alex is a tough kid and I'm so proud of him," Sprayberry coach Gary DeHaven said. "He wrestled some tough kids. He beat (McEachern's) Matt Smith in the semifinals and now Bell in the finals. To be able to win two times is incredible."

Walton junior Jeff Olsen won his first title after defeating Nick Smith of Collins Hill, 10-9, at 171 pounds.

"Jeff wrestled really smart this whole tournament and even dominated at times," said Raiders coach Pete Murphy. "He took a dangerous wrestler in Smith and controlled him. Jeff's effort was tremendous."

The Hoyas added a second individual champion later in the evening when Alex Medved beat Daniel Helena of Shiloh, 5-3, at 140 pounds.

The team title went to Collins Hill, which tallied 223 points. The Eagles, who also won the Class AAAAA state duals championship in January, finished ahead of second-place Harrison (179.5). Union Grove was third with 157.5 points and Kell (125) finished fourth, just ahead of fifth-place Parkview (120.5).

"My hats off to Collins Hill," said Stephen. "We've both had really great seasons. We needed a couple of more breaks to catch them. We're not satisfied with second, but we'll take it."

Harrison Hoyas 2008 Traditional Region Champs
    By Carlton D. White

POWDER SPRINGS - McEachern may have won the battle with six individual champions, but it was Harrison that won the war, winning the Area 5AAAAA traditional championship Saturday at McEachern and qualifying all 14 of its wrestlers to next week's state traditional tournament in Duluth.

The Hoyas, who won their first area traditional title since 2001, had four champions, four second-place finishers, three third-place showings and three fourth-place finishers to earn 262.5 points.

"Our goal was to get everybody through to the state tournament and that's what we did," said Harrison coach Josh Stephen. "There were some tough draws out there, but overall it was a great day for us."

The Indians, who finished second with 206 points, also had one third-place wrestler and two finish in fourth place.

"I think that's awesome," said McEachern coach Tony VanHorn on having all six of his wrestlers in the championship final win individual area titles. "Five of those guys are seniors and it was good to see those guys wrestle hard and contribute to the overall team points. We'll take this outcome and run with it next week and try to get some championships."

Kennesaw Mountain tallied 163.5 points and finished third overall. The Mustangs qualified seven wrestlers for the state tournament and won three individual area championships.

"The guys who won championships for us wrestled tough," said Mustangs coach Roberto Rivera. "We probably could have had a few more guys qualify for state, but we just didn't wreste well in a couple of matches.

"Before (Saturday), we had only two area champions in school history. So, to have three (Saturday) is a positive step for us."

Marietta (99.5), which placed sixth overall, is sending three wrestlers to the state tournament after posting two second-place finishes and one third-place. South Cobb (97), which earned a second-, third- and two fourth-place finishes was seventh overall. North Cobb (93.5) placed eighth with three wrestlers advancing.

Several wrestlers won area titles for the second consecutive season, including McEachern's Brian Westerman, Matt Smith and Keith Parker. Harrison's Ryan Medved, Alex Medved and Josh Condon also won for the second straight time.

"(It feels) about the same as last year," said Alex Medved after winning for the second year in a row. "It feels good to be going to state again. Winning helps me get a good placement in the state tournament and then I'll have to take it from there. It's just around the corner.

Harrison's other champion was Michael Huddleston, an unseeded wrestler at 160 pounds, who defeated the top three seeds in reverse order to win the title.

"So far this is probably the best I've ever wrestled in one day," said Huddleston. "Hopefully, they'll be more days like this. I'm a little surprised how well I did."

With the individual area champions crowned, Stephen looks forward to the state meet and what lies ahead for his team.

"With the way the brackets get set up, you never know what could happen," he said. "It will take a great effort to get everybody through that, but it's nice to have 14 folks who could possibly score for you. The more numbers you have the better chance you have in the team race in case the score is close

    Harrison 2008 State Runners Up
"The Area 5AAAAA champion Hoyas (21-8), who are ranked third in the latest GaSports.com coaches poll, ultimately finished the meet as the runner-up to Area 7AAAAA champion and top-ranked Collins Hill after falling to the Eagles, 47-10 in the final. The finish wasn't quite what the Hoyas were looking for, but it did help validate the coach's position on the status of his team.

"We have very high expectations for our team this season," said Harrison head coach Josh Stephen prior to the state duals tournament. "People talk, saying we're overrated. But, I believe it's important for this program to be successful. We're not here to wait. We're Area champions, and we're out to prove that we aren't a fluke."

Although Harrison didn't win the state title, the Hoyas showed marked improvement at the event than in previous seasons. Harrison lost each of its first-round matches in 2006 and 2007."
MACON - Harrison was one of several schools that was in action Saturday at the Georgia High School Association Dual Wrestling State Championships at the Macon Centreplex.

However, it may be wishing it was one of the ones that didn't have to compete.

"We wrestled awful (Saturday)," Hoyas coach Josh Stephen said in the most succinct manner possible after his third-ranked Hoyas finished as the runner-up to top-ranked Collins Hill, 47-10, in the Class AAAAA championship final. "We were flat. We made poor choices out there and lost a lot of close matches. I really thought we would perform better than this."

Harrison only won two matches as Josh Condon started things off with a pin victory at 152 pounds over Cody Parker for a 6-0 Hoya lead.

The rest of the dual belonged to Collins Hill, which claimed this year's title after a third-place finish in 2007. The Eagles earned victories in 10 consecutive matches, including a pin at 285, major decisions at 112 and 130, and a 6-point injury default at 125. The result was a commanding 38-6 lead with three matches remaining.

"We wrestled great," said Collins Hill head coach Cliff Ramos. "Harrison has a great team and they could very well turn the tables on us the next time we meet. But, we just seemed to win all of the close matches and the points kept piling up. We just about wrestled a perfect match (Saturday)."

Ryan Medved broke up the Eagles' winning streak with a 10-0 major decision over Joel Smith at 135 pounds. Collins Hill then picked up victories at 140 and 145 resulting in the final score. Seven of the Eagles' 12 wins were by decision.

"We had a really good start with Josh Condon, but after that, there was just no momentum," Stephen said. "Our guys really didn't step up and you can't do that when you're trying to win a championship. You can't hold back. We didn't come for second, but I guess we'll have to take it.

"Now we'll need to get back to training to try to win the traditional (tournament)."

Saturday's inclement weather across the state of Georgia sent GHSA officials and meet director Pete Fritts scrambling. Match times were pushed up, scoring systems were changed and some teams even discussed who would be champion instead of deciding it on the mat - all in an effort to get teams, spectators and officials on the roads and home in time before conditions became treacherous.

"We're really looking after the safety of these people in here," said Fritts. "The sooner everyone can get home, the better."

    Harrison Region Champions 2008
KENNESAW - Harrison showed why it should have been the top seed at the Area 5AAAAA wrestling duals as it took down Murray County, 42-24, in the championship round Saturday night.

The win means the Hoyas (18-7) will advance to the state duals, which begin this weekend in Macon. En route to the championship dual, the squad defeated Marietta, 54-15, in the quarterfinals and Kennesaw Mountain, 32-21, in the semis.

Harrison head coach Josh Stephen said his team made a statement with its win over a Kennesaw Mountain team that had beaten them in a dual a few weeks ago. He hopes the tournament win will put aside doubt about how good his squad is.

"We didn't sweat the No. 3-seed thing because it all kind of comes out in the end," Stephen said. "I was real pleased with where we are. Some people are saying that we are overrated in terms of our ranking, but I think that we are going to prove it when it matters.

"I am pleased with where we are now. We just have to prepare for the next round."

The Hoyas were ranked third in the most recent GaSports.com poll and their 18-7 record is a bit deceptive. Five of those losses were at the hands of some of the best teams in the country who gathered for a tournament in Minnesota in December.

Against Murray County, they started slow before cleaning up with the middleweights. Opening at 160-pounds, Murray took at 3-0 advance when Brian Bennett earned at 6-4 decision over Jared York. A pin by Josh Condon had the Hoyas briefly on top before another decision in favor of the Indians tied things at six.

Stephen said the decision at 189 pounds and one in the heavyweight division were two of the most important matches of the dual even though his team lost them both. Without a wrestler in the 189-pound class, he moved some of his wrestlers up one or two classes to get matches that would be favorable.

The Hoyas bumped their 152-pound wrestler, York, up to 160 pounds. Josh Condon was then moved to 171 pounds. Robbie Godhigh moved up to face Murray's Zach Baggett because he doesn't give up many points and is rarely pinned.

Stephen said the strategy worked well.

"Robbie Godhigh (189) for one did a good job keeping a close loss to a good kid from Murray County," said Stephen. I thought Rudy Joseph (285) did a good job because he kept it to a decision. He kind of took one for the team. Instead of trying to get a win, we made sure that we only lost by one.

"I could go tight down the line. I think it is a total team effort how we did. We did some flip-flopping around with 125 and 130 and I was real proud that it ended up working out."

With fewer wrestlers competing out of class in the light and middleweights, the Hoyas were able to pick up some points. At 103 pounds Nick Christakis earned a 14-1 major decision before Peter Mosher (119) pinned his opponent to give Harrison the 22-12 lead. The team sealed the victory when Alex Condon (130), Ryan Medved (135) and Matt Whittenburg (145) recorded pins. Alex Medved's major decision over Andrew Bauldwin (140) completed the Hoyas' scoring. Murray's Preston Rainey (152) pinned Justin Roedel to end the dual with a score of 42-24.

“We are glad to win this prestigious tournament,’’ said Harrison head coach Josh Stephen, ‘‘but I feel we wrestled flat today and didn’t give a great performance.

    F-O-C-U-S
“F" of focus stands for forget. Forget anything negative that has occurred. Forget the referees call. Forget the bad math test you had last week. Forget the cheap shot that you received out of bounds from your opponent.

“O” is for Organize. A wrestler organizing for the moment in the match must recognize the score, the time left in the period, the position to be wrestled, and the attacks to be wary of that his/her opponent may initiate and his own offensive moves. There is a great deal of information to process in a short time for a wrestler to be organized and focused.

“C” – Concentrate: Now the wrestler must "Concentrate" on the action that must be taken to win in that moment…to win that period. A good and focused wrestler will know if they are on bottom and there is only 12 seconds left in the third period and they are down by one, that it is important to be organized for that precise moment.

“U” - Unwind every time you start a period. Before you set yourself on the bottom or top, focus on the moment of the match. Check the score to organize yourself, and scan your mind to think of the movement you will attempt, and just before placing your hands or feet to re-start wrestling, unwind by drawing in and controlling a deep breath., organizing and concentrating.

“S” Finally, the last part of focus is step. The acronym of F-O-C-U-S walks you through forgetting the negative, organizing for the moment, concentrating on the movement, unwinding to take control of the rush of adrenaline, and the step to be taken at the sound of the whistle. The process of focus will help you to grasp the speed, the force, and the fury that needs to go into the precise step to be taken at the initial whistle. What do you want to do to your opponent and what are the steps to get there?
