Catz is offering the girls rowing a 3 week, 9 session program
Classes Monday – Wednesday – Friday
Starting Monday, November 30
Ending Friday, December 18.
Cost is dependent on how many girls sign up, but it should be between $90/girl if 15 sign up to $54/girl if 25 sign up.
Payment will be made directly to Catz, but RSVPs need to go to HHSRA.

Spring Training 2010 – Washington College, Chestertown, MD
Dear Parents and Rowers,
This coming year, spring recess at the High School is from April 17- April 24. It happens to fall smack in the middle of our short spring rowing season.
In an effort to gain as much water time as possible early in the season, we have decided to organize a trip for our rowing team to Chestertown, Maryland (on the Eastern Shore) where we will row at Washington College using our boats and their facilities http://washingtoncollegesports.com/wrowing/. Our hope is that the athletes in our top two varsity boats (boys and girls) will be able to commit to this important piece of spring training. However, we do understand that many families take vacation together and may already be committed elsewhere. At this point, however, we are seeking early interest from ALL members of the team so that we may determine feasibility and costs.
Details are being finalized. They include the following:
· Depart Hingham in 15 passenger vans on Saturday, April 17.
· Return to Hingham Wednesday night April 21.
· Lodging at Comfort Suites Chestertown, MD. 3-4 students/room
· Food on campus at Washington College
· 8-10 practices and a tentative race
· Cost - $500 or less. Scholarships available.
· Coaches and chaperones will be in charge
Please be reminded that the season begins on March 15. We will have already had one race and will be getting ready for the busiest part of our racing season in May. If you or your son or daughter is in contention for one of the top 2 racing boats, you (they) will be encouraged/invited to go. Several alternates will be selected as well.
For those novices and other rowers who do not make the trip, please know that we hope to make this trip an annual event and practices will be organized in Hingham that week of vacation. While we cannot mandate attendance at these practices, we would like to encourage you (or your athlete) to consider making them a priority. We know this experience will be fun and uniquely important to our highly competitive spring racing season.
By December 1, would everyone who receives this, regardless of your boat placement (because we may be able to offer this opportunity to those rowers in the V3 and N1 depending on commitment levels) please give an indication regarding your level of interest: ‘Count Me In’, ‘Interested’, or ‘Unavailable’. Please email your level of interest to either Coach McCaig (dmccaig@comcast.net) or Robin Aborn (raborn1@verizon.net).

Again this year, Hingham was represented in the world's biggest rowing regatta, the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. Our team entered the boys youth 8+ in a field of 80.
For the boys who participated, it was the opportunity of a lifetime.
Thank you to all the parents and team mates who made this possible. As a program, it is a great way to start the year and to keep the momentum from the fall moving in to the winter. we look forward to following this up with a big weekend in Worcester this weekend.

1. Boys' Friday practice will be at Ro* Fast (except for the V1 boat that is going into Boston), at their regular times.
2. The MPSRA Fall State Championship, our final race of the season, is scheduled for Sunday, October 25, in Worchester from approximately 8 - 1. If your son cannot participate in this race, please let us know ASAP. Varsity rowers should email Coach Hayes at purple_hayes@comcast.net, and novice rowers contact Coach Nina at nina.villanova@gmail.com.

What a great day for the novices yesterday in New Hampshire. Congratulations to all of you who participated in the race. Special thanks to all the parents who helped with the hospitality. Mr. Allen, Mrs. McKeon White, Mrs. Stack, Mr. and Mrs. Kaplan, Mrs. Setian, Mrs. Nielsen, and the parents who helped car pool our group to New Hampshire. Hingham was well represented in the youth 8+ and the youth novice 8+.
Chip Carey coxed his first race on a challenging course. Steven Hughes shoes fell off, Ryder Nelson broke his shoe, Steven Dings caught an absolutely huge crab right in front of the spectators, Austin LeTourney and Ryder Nelson stroked their first races, and Matt 7 didn't crab.
All in all a banner day for Hingham and great preparation for the MPSRA race in 2 weeks.

All novices should plan to row Wed, Thurs, Friday, and Saturday this week.
First, i would like to thank all of you who will be participating in tomorrow's New Hampshire Championship Regatta.
The departure of so many of our crew for the SATs this Saturday has created an opportunity for more rowers to participate in the regatta.
We have 4 boats registered - this means 32 rowers and 4 coxswains. We have no one to spare. In fact, some of our athletesmay have to row twice.
The race is approximately 3 miles long and is quite arduous.

Disclaimer: For all of our crews who have limited time on the water and are just getting up to speed, this will be a LEARNING experience. This is just to set your expectations. The race will be fun and exciting for the kids - boring for spectators.

This week's hospitality effort will be run by and for the boys. The girls will not be traveling to New Hampshire. Kathleen will send out an email asking for specific items -- very similar to last week. We are anticipating a parent-run car pool to transport the boys to the regatta so we will be asking each boy to bring their requested item in their car-pool car.
Kathleen will also be looking for a car-pool parent(s) to spearhead the hospitality tent. Thank you Jane King for an outstanding effort last week! As Jane can attest -- The tables and tents will be on the trailer with the boats. And, Kathleen will drop off the supply bin complete with paper goods, tablecloths and misc. supplies by Friday morning to your home. The hospitality parent will set up the tables with the food and continue to replenish and make things look nice.
It is a system that works well -- however, it needs your help to make it all happen. So thank you in advance for creating a great day for our boys!
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the parents who helped us today at the Textile River Regatta. It was a great day and Hingham was well represented - improving in every category in which we competed.
The Textile River Regatta has grown to become one of the pre-eminent High School regattas in the Northeast. We competed successfully in the youth 4+ (with 2 entries) and the youth 8+ (with 3 entries). There were entrants from all over the Northeast. The regatta counted nearly 600 boats. Hingham earned a 5th and 12th spot among other improved finishes.
Special thanks to our wonderful hospitality crew including Mrs. Snow for her organization, Mr. and Mrs. King, Mr.and Mrs.. McKeon-White, Mr. and Mrs. Alvarado, Mrs Maisto and Mr. and Mrs. Smoot. Dick Burbridge was a great help in transporting our equipment to Lowell and Mrs. Rowell deserves thanks for arranging our transportation.
The Textile River Regatta has become a great tradition for Hingham High School Crew. We have been improving every year.
Thank you everyone and particularly our novice helpers Nick Nielsen, Joe Johnson, Nora Happ, and Ryan Boretti for a fun and successful day.

As many of you know, you teammate, Robert Danis has been diagnosed with Lymphoma, a type of cancer. Robert is undergoing treatment at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. This Saturday during homecoming we will have a row-a-thon to raise money for Dana Farber.
62 members of the boys and girls rowing team participated in the row-a-thon to support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the name of our team mate Robert Danis. This was a great showing from our rowing team and showed the type of support we, as a team, have in the community. On behalf of Robert, we would like to thank all of you who participated in any way. Mrs. Aborn, Mr. McCusker, Mrs. McKeon-White and all of our team deserve thanks for the effort. And the grand total raised is.......$3,222.96 !!!
Great job to all who participated in any way and donated.
Can and Bottle Drive
The can and bottle drive today raised $550, plus the $75 collected over the summer from our Fourth of July fundraising. Thank you to everyone who helped out today. We especially appreciate the efforts of Mary and Daniel Lahiff, Cynthia McKeon, Margie Sullivan, Tricia Russ, Mike Leen, Cate Bannan, Justin Aborn, Tim and Liz Perkins, everyone who came by to drop off bottles and cans as well as anyone we may have missed. Our committee head, Marty Jennings did a great job of organizing the day. We could not do this without the time and support of everyone. We were thrilled to see some of our alum families come back to support us too.
We have a pick up date for the dump of October 24th so watch for updates on that, we will need drivers to transport the large bags to the recycling center.

The following is a list of tentative regatta dates for the fall season so that you can plan ahead. These dates are subject to change and more information and details to follow as we get closer.
GIRLS:
All the girls will row on 9/25/09 from approximately 3:00-5:00 p.m. in Hingham (homecoming weekend).
1 or 2 boats will race on 10/25/09 at the MPSRA Regatta in Worcester.
BOYS:
3 Boats will race in the Textile River Regatta in Lowell on 10/4/09.
2-3 Boats will race in the New Hampshire Championship Regatta in Manchester, NH on 10/10/09.
1 Boat will race in Boston on 10/17/09 at the Head of the Charles Regatta.
All boys will race on 10/25/09 at the MPSRA Regatta in Worcester.
Again, more details will follow, and this is tentative schedule at this point

SOW AND ROW
Think Spring this Fall. This is the official kick-off of HHSRA's Fall Fundraiser! The team will be selling beautiful flower bulbs to be planted in Fall and enjoyed next Spring. Please ask your parents, grandparents, and friends to support HHSRA while beautifying their gardens. Alicia Bolze will be passing out flower bulb sales kits on Friday (after boys' practice) and Monday (after girls' practice). Simply show the colorful sales kit to your friends, record the orders and collect payment. The bulb company will send the bulbs directly to the purchaser. Rowers will not need to deliver the bulbs. All orders must be turned in by October 16th. Orders will be shipped within 3 days after we get them in so please get your orders in. Have fun! Any questions, call Alicia Bolze at 781-749-5940.
Boys Practice Times Update
Due to the heavy turnout for fall rowing, we need to alter the rowing times to accomodate all the boys. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. Starting this Friday, all freshmen and 2 sophomores, Benoit, and Kelly, will row M,W,F from 5 - 6:30. (All other male rowers report at 3:30.)
Saturday practice times will vary according to the tide and will be announced on the website. This Saturday's practice will be at 8 a.m. for ALL of the boys.

Free College Night Seminar
Gail Silberstein and Maura Glandorf from Rowers Edge and the CRI Junior Competitive Coaches, Ethan Curren and Marko Vukovic are pleased to present a Free College Night Seminar for team members and their parents on Wednesday September 23rd beginning at 6:30PM. The seminar will provide an overview of the college recruiting process and is open to all high school rowers and coxswains who may want to continue to row/cox in college.
In addition, several CRI alumni who recently graduated from college will be available to talk to rowers and coxswains about their collegiate rowing experience.
This meeting is open to all and we are sure will prove to be very informative. Please pass this along to anyone who may be interested.

Swim Test For Anyone Participating in Crew this year
Note: Due to Tropical Storm Danny bringing high winds and rain the swim test scheduled for Sat 8/29 has been postponed until Monday, 8/31 at 11am.
Dates: Either Friday 8/28 or Saturday 8/29 (weather dependent – please check the website for changes)
Times: Anytime between 11:00 and 2:00 on either day. The test itself shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes, but we can only test a small number at a time; be prepared to wait for a little while
What to wear: bathing suit, sweatpants, and long sleeve tee shirt
What to bring: a towel and a copy of this email signed by your parent
What to expect:
q Wearing a long sleeve tee shirt and sweatpants over a bathing suit, jump into the water and remove the sweatpants, then swim 100 yards
q Tread water 1 minute
q While treading water, remove the tee shirt, and continue treading 4 additional minutes
q While treading water put on life jacket, climb up on to the dock without assistance
There has been conflicting communication about who needs to take this test and what the test will entail, but this is the confirmed plan. Even if you have been tested in the ocean before, we would like all rowers to take this test because of the addition of wearing sweatpants to more accurately reflect a real life situation.

Note: Hingham harbor is scheduled for dredging this fall beginning so scheduling may change depending upon the dredging schedule and when docks are scheduled to be pulled.

Can and Bottle Drive
Hi Everybody!
The can drive on Saturday, June 20 netted us $294.50. Thank you to the dedicated rowers and parents who came, sorted, bagged and transported all the cans and bottles. Thank you do all of you who saved those cans and bottles. We are up for a day at the dump in October. Keep saving those cans and bottles.

They tried again, but couldn't keep up with the Harbormen. This time both the fledgling BC High crew and the Brookline High crew ganged up on the Boys' varsity and couldn't come close on the Charles River. Replacement crew members Jake Allen (Coxswain) and Chris Stenson (2 Seat) did a great job filling in for absent team mates and helped deliver a big win today. Great job Jake and Chris and great job Nina Villanova for coaching this week.
The novices were a little late rowing the 6 miles to the race start and had to compete with Brookline and BC High's 2nd varsity. Coach Villanova reported a great start but a loss of momentum in the middle of the race resulting in a 3rd place finish for the Harbormen.
