2008 SD State Championships - Pierre
August 5, 2008
P3 came into Pierre as the 4 seed with a bye in the first round of this 12 team Division 1 event. The first game that P3 had was against the Workers/Fence winner. Fence handled Workers and so the P3 squad faced the 2007 D2 champ in game 1. P3 got off to a fast start and carried the day with an 11-1 win in 5 innings. Due to a scheduling snafu the good guys only had 1 game for the day, so on to Sunday.
On day two of the event P3 was 1 of 4 teams unbeaten, and faced 7-time defending state champ Sanford out of Sioux Falls. With the wind blowing in this was a tight game at 4-3 in the 6th, before Sanford tacked on a few more for a 6-3 victory. Next up was The Zoo out of Aberdeen who'd been making a run through the losers bracket. In another ho-hum game The Zoo crossed a few more times and won 9-6.
This made for a rather uneventful weekend for the P3 squad, losing to the eneventual champ and the runner-up.
1-Sanford
2-Zoo
3-Tryon
4-Schmittys
Rookies Tournament
The P3 squad came into the Rookies tournament in Sioux Falls with a year that’s seen a mixed bag of tournament results, while looking at a 19-1 record in Sioux Falls Thursday night league.
In this 10-team event, P3 opened up with the “play-in game” versus Shenanigans (formerly Suds). The fellas got off to a good start, winning the opener 16-12. Next up was PokerStars from Sioux Falls, which ended up proving to be a one-sided match up with a 13-2 score. With 4 teams unbeaten P3 had their first match up with Sanford in the 2008 campaign. With a very flat effort, Sanford beat P3 by a score of 10-0 in a game that P3 with merely 2 hits in 5 innings. Moments later (consecutive game times) P3 faced Shenanigans for the 2nd time on Saturday and this time they got the best of P3 by an 11-9 tally. While playing 4 games into the wind on Diamond I was pretty rough on Saturday, the team still expected a better showing yet again. A 2-2 record in this event wasn’t a complete failure, but it clearly was short of the goals of the squad.
Tournament Finish:
1-Sanford
2-Gateway
3-Tryon
4-Shenanigans

June 30, 2008
The end of June always means the Mcquades charity softball tournament in Bismarck, ND. This year the P3 team was looking to improve on the 4th place finish back in the last time the squad competed in the event..2006.
The weekend started out on Friday night with AFB out of Minot, ND. In a bit of a mudfight, P3 found themselves up 5-3 with 2 outs in the 7th inning. With runners on 1st and 2nd, a slow roller was hit on the left side of the infield which caused some level of indecision. This roller ended up giving AFB the bases loaded and the next batter promptly made P3 pay as he hit a grand slam to take the lead. In the bottom of the 7th P3 mounted a rally with runners on 1st and 3rd, but a great play by the AFB second basement thwarted the rally and finished the game at a 7-5 score. While 5 runs isn’t going to beat many teams, being up the entire game makes for a great letdown come games end.
The next morning P3 got Dustex out of Mandan, ND..who finished 3rd last year at Mcquades. P3 got off to a good start and had a spirited effort that led to a 21-11 win in 5 innings. Next up was Rookies/BOHICA from Sioux Falls. In another quick start, P3 handled Rookies 18-1 in 4 innings..which is the 2nd game between the two Sioux Falls teams in tournament play this season. Next up was the Zoo Bar, who’d been struggling with run support all tournament. That said, the Zoo absolutely blasted the ball all over the diamond and with power as well..not making an out until midway into the lineup for a second time..in the first inning. After putting up 18 in the top of the 1st inning, P3 didn’t lay down. 6 runs later and 6 more in the next, P3 was at 12 runs through 2 innings..but the Zoo kept hitting at finished out the game in 4 innings at a 31-13 clip. This is one of those games where you don’t look at everything you did wrong, instead it’s all about everything they did right.
At the end of the weekend P3 finished a lack-luster 2-2, which was less than team expectations. The team still managed to have a good time, enjoying one of the marquee events of each softball summer.
Top Finishers:
1-Tharaldsons – ND
2-Fisher – ND
3-Ackerman – ND
4-Miken/360 – MN
Thanks again to Chris Weise from Gateway (SD) and Paul Kruse from Sanford (SD) for plugging in some middle infield holes for us.
Roster updates and team news
June 26, 2008
The month of June was very eventful for the P3 squad, and not all in a good way. 2008 player pickup Roland Sessions (shown above) broke his hand in mid-June after diving into a fence during a game during an pickup tournament in Minneapolis. Roland will be out for 6-8 weeks, which might mean the rest of the reason depending on how things go with healing. Considering his vigor and athleticism, he will be sorely missed.
In Roland’s place comes Chris Stoebner (“Staybs”) from Minneapolis to fill in as needed in the middle infield, along with another returning Kegger of the past (3 years ago) Marcus Leloux to play some outfield and to help keep the team at the right number of bodies. These two ex college basketball standouts will help boost the teams speed and ability to make plays. Both guys will not be available full-time, but they should be able to make some of the more high profile events along with a fair share of league games. Good to have them back in the huddle!
Pierre - PLS Tournament
P3 decided to head over to Pierre last minute to play in the PLS tournament, a newer event that’s picking up steam. The pairings brought Bertsch Roofing in P3’s direction for a tough game. While P3 was up most of the game, Bertsch hung with it and ended up taking the game 13-12. From there the boys got Coyotes from Fort Yates, ND. The Coyotes had trouble getting any runs across as P3 got back on track in this 18-0 win. Next up was Saloon 10 out of Deadwood. In a game that P3 controlled throughout, the final was 15-10.
Moving to Sunday, P3 got Outkast right away. In a game with virtually no errors P3 was able to outlast the Outkast 6-5 into the wind. Next up in this hearty field of teams was Tryon. In a game that saw Tryon hit 4 homers into the wind, P3 was only able to muster 1..which ended up being the difference in this 14-12 game. All said, P3 got 4th in this tournament with a 3-2 record on the weekend.
Tournament Finish:
1-Gateway
2-Tryon
3-Bertsch
4-P3
Spring Classic and League Play
May 21, 2008
Spring Classic
While the Keg/P3 squad has gotten 4th place at the last two Spring Classic softball tournaments, the 2008 event was a different story. Matched up with last year’s 3rd place finisher in the opening round in Zoo/Huff Softball (Aberdeen, SD), the P3 squad played it’s worst defense of the year in a 12-3 loss. As a good team does, Zoo took advantage of all the P3 mistakes and converted them into runs. Next up for the P3 squad was BOHICA from Sioux Falls. P3 got off to an early start in this one, which led to a 16-8 finish. Sunday morning the guys got up early to be throttled 15-0 by Tryon in a game where simply put, they hit and we didn’t. Tryon ended up getting 3rd in this tournament, while P3 fell well short of team goals with a 1-2 finish.
League Play
Currently the P3 squad is 6-0 on Thursday nights in Sioux Falls with wins over the Storm, Workers, and others. While rain and cold weather has been in the forecast much of the year so far, the fellas are hoping to see some sunshine in the coming weeks.
Player retirement
May 30, 2008
After spending the last few years on the Keg/P3 squad, Brad Kuhnert has decided to hang up the cleats and call it a career. Brad will greatly be missed in the P3 huddle not only as a contributor, but also because of his softball experience and his crazy sense of humor. “Old Sexy” as he was called was a lot of fun to have around at the park and will be missed.
Brad spent the brunt of his softball career on the mound for a very strong Sioux Falls “B/C” team, Bases Loaded. “Koon” was one of the driving forces for the Loaded squad for a long time along with Titans regulars Dave Van Tol and Bob Stratman. Brad was one of the top offensive players for a team that routinely played in national tournaments and helped establish South Dakota softball in our region.
Brad always a gamer and can still play, so don’t be stunned if you see Brad picking up on a game or tournament sometime if the right situation presents itself. Good luck friend.
Corkys Early Bird - 2nd place finish
May 15, 2008
Corkys
Push Pedal Pull (P3) Softball opened up the season in Owatonna, MN and the Corky’s Early Bird Tournament. The squad was lined up to play in the C/DD division along side a steady mix of C and D teams from Minneapolis, Iowa, Wisconsin, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
For the first day or so of the tournament the games were playing in a pretty bad rain and cold wind. This made for some lower scores, along with the 3-homer allowance.
The P3 squad got out of the gates good with wins over the MN Hitmen, the Bashers (MN), Xtreme Measures (WI), and Bashers/Mortgage Depot, before losing in the undefeated game to Miken/Tanel/Daves. After this game, the P3 squad took care of the Ragin Hawks (IA) to get back to the championship where another defeat to Miken was the end result. Overall a very good weekend for the guys with a 5-2 start and 2nd place finish at a bigger event like Corky’s, along with getting a good chance to get some early season games under the belt.
On a side note, Thad Namanny (Old Nummy) did an exceptional job of filling in on the hill for longtime Keg pitcher Todd Ibis.
New Sponsors..
While The Keg restaurant in Sioux Falls was a great sponsor for our softball team for many years, we’ve gotten word that they can no longer substantiate sponsoring a softball team with the rising costs of doing business.
The players of Keg Softball (now P3) would like to publically thank The Keg for their years of good support and the great partnership we had with them.
That all said, Push Pedal Pull will be our primary sponsor going forward and will take on the new name of our squad. Below is a little more information regarding Push Pedal Pull (P3).
