USE OF ALTERED BATS
September 4, 2009
There has been a lot of advances in softball technology in the past decade. Composite metals and fibers, advanced engineering and testing has led ASA (our governing body) to restrict the use of some bats for league and tournament play in the name of safety.
Recently there has been a growing concern as league directors, umpires and players are noticing an influx of Altered Bats. What is an altered bat? This can take several forms, but most noticably popular is ROLLING. Rolling a bat in theory gives it an extra "pop," taking a legal bat and making it "hot" by altering the structure of the composite fibers that make up the sweet spot. Not only does the ball come off the bat harder and faster, but the structural integrity of the bat is comprimised severly.
The use of a rolled bat is VERY illegal and will result in an automatic game ejection, multiple game suspensions and in the event of a caused injury, possibly criminal.
This is an issue that can no longer be ignored. Umpires will be checking bats. Do not use them, Do not bring them in the dugout.
