Great Performances for a Great Weekend
The Rebels participated in the Triple Crown Tournament in New Jersey last weekend, going 3-2 in their five games and made it to the Consolation Final. Adam Grace was producing both on the offensive and defensive side of the plate. He went three for three with a double and two RBIs against the Hudson Valley Ironmen while throwing out a Teel Raven in another game. The offence was also bolstered by great efforts from Evan Baglieri, Royce Consigli, and T.J. Singh.
The pitching staff provided a powerful impact on the weekend. Andrew Neustaedter scattered six hits over six innings for a complete game win. Brad Czaikowski threw four gritty innings, allowing only one run with five strikeouts. Bobby Boddam also threw well, picking up a win for the Rebels. Great job this weekend!
The Rebels will be participating in the Wright State University Tournament this weekend in Dayton, Ohio. The Rebels will also be playing in the Lancer Classic Tournament in Lewiston, New York in August. Go Rebels!
It's Called A Winning Streak
The Niagara Rebels have hit their stride and are playing some of their best baseball of the season, putting together a three game winning streak. The Rebels came into the weekend against the 3rd place Team Ontario and took back-to-back games from them. In the first game, Niagara pulled out an exciting walk off win when Nathan Mastervick was able to score from first base on a double down the leftfield line by Brandon Nelson. The Rebels were paced by excellent pitching from starter Brian Kusey. Kusey was able to keep the high powered Team O offence to 2 runs on two hits striking out 7. Dave Hatt pitched a clean 7th inning to pick up the win. Top offensive players for the Rebels were Kamil Oubayan and Nathan Mastervick who both had a multiple hit game.
After taking two from Team Ontario the Rebels set their sights on evening the series up with the Oakville Royals. While pitching and timely hitting carried the day for the Rebels on the weekend, it was the offense that came up big for Niagara on Tuesday. The Rebels were able to plate 7 runs. Royce Consigili got things going at the plate with a single and double, while other contributors were Oubayan, Evan Baglieri, and TJ Singh with singles and Nathan Mastervick adding two walks. The bullpen also came up big at key moments in the game. Dave Beerworth got his first win as a Rebel coming out of the pen for a scoreless inning eventually being picked up by Zak Porter with Dylan Grosul pitching a scoreless 7th for the save.
The Rebels are off to the Triple Crown Tournament for the Fourth of July in New Jersey. Go Rebels!
All Star Plays, and MVP, and Drafted, Oh My!
It’s official! The Rebels are pleased to announce that Royce Consigli has been drafted into Major League Baseball. He was picked up in the 30th round by the Oakland Athletics. Royce and our head coach, Justin Montgomery were recently featured on Cogeco's The Source on Channel 10 here in the Niagara Region, discussing the team's future. The Niagara Rebels organization would like to congratulate Royce and his family on this great achievement and wish him great luck in the future.
It has been a great couple of weeks for the Rebels as Royce was also picked as MVP in the PBLO All Star Game in Guelph. Our west squad won 10-5 with Royce hitting a grand slam and going 3 for 5. The Rebels’ Kamil Oubayan played solid defense, and we had five great innings from Dave Hatt and Jeff Cummings combined. The Rebels showed their stuff and were outstanding. They represented well.
Tough weekend leads to a turnaround for the Rebels
The Niagara Rebels stumbled during a four game set against a tough Toronto Mets team and were able to only pull out one victory. The Rebels again got quality starts from its starters, Andrew Neustaedter and Dave Hatt; however both turned out to be hard luck lossers as the Mets were able to rally from behind and take both games. The fourth game of the series saw a total effort put forth by the Rebels in a convincing win 8-1. Niagara got one of the best pitched outings of the season from Brian Kusey who was domininate in throwing a complete game in the win. One the offensive side the bats came alive again for the rebels with the big blast coming in the top of the 7th when Royce Consigli connected on his first career grand slam.
Tuesday the Niagara Rebels travelled to Cambridge to take on the Intercounty Terriers and the Rebels were a different team from the one that took the field against the Terriers in their first encounter. In one of the best played games of the season, Andrew Nuesteadter took a perfect game into the bottom of the 5th inning. The terriers were able to scratch out 3 runs against the tough Rebels pitching and they proved to be enough as the Rebels fell 3-1.
What an Opening Weekend!
The old adage that pitching and defense wins baseball games proved to be true as the Niagara Rebels opened their 2009 campaign against a tough Ottawa Canadians team, successfully taking three out of four games.
Despite stumbling out of the blocks in Game 1 of the series, the Rebels were able to rebound and turn their fortunes around by winning the next three games. Niagara got three excellent pitching performances from starters Brad Czajkowski, Brian Kusey, and Andrew Neustaedter in the wins. The bullpen, anchored by closer Jeff Cummings, was shaky in its first outing but proved to be lights out in the wins, with Cummmings picking up three saves. Along with good pitching, the Rebels’ defense proved to be the difference in the series, turning seven double plays over the four games.
The offense, although sluggish at times, came through when needed with some clutch hitting and solid baserunning on the way to scoring 18 runs over the course of the series. The top offensive performers were Nathan Mastervick and Royce Consigli.
The Rebels are looking to build on this success with games this Tuesday and Saturday at Welland Stadium. Come out and support your Rebels!
Countdown to Opening Day!
It's only 2 weeks until opening games on May 9th at Welland Stadium!
To continue our workouts, we're now moving outdoors after our successful winter sessions at White Oaks and the Niagara Sports Dome. Our first team practices will be at Memorial Park #3 in Welland on Sat. April 25th and Sunday April 26th.
We're looking forward to seeing our 18U team together on the field, putting into play all they've mastered this winter!
Everything Running Smoothly
The winter session is going very well. Each element of the game is being worked on meticulously, fully preparing the players for the upcoming season. The pitchers continue to demonstrate good mechanics and work ethic, while the infielding drills have the players making smooth, quick transfers. With the new batting cage, each hitter is making great progress through multiple drills and batting situations. Great job boys!
The Niagara Rebels would like to announce that Royce Consigili will be attending the Major League Baseball Scouts Bureau Showcase. This event is by invitation only. The entire Rebels organization would like to wish Royce the best of luck and we know that he will make us all proud. Good luck, Royce!
Rebels Do New York
The Niagara Rebels returned home this past week from an exhausting East coast roadtrip that saw them play six games in four days. The first game saw the Rebels come out flat against Burlington County Community College. Later that night the Rebels opened the Long Island tournament against a tough Bayside Yankees team and turned in one of the best performances of the year. The four day long tournament turned out to be very prosperous for the Rebels as many of the players caught the notice of University and Professional scouts alike. Niagara finished the tournament with a 1-4 record losing all four games that were decided in the last few innings.
Top performers on the mound for the Rebels were Dave Hatt who against the Basyide Yankees struck out 8 and only giving up 3 earned runs over 7 innings. Brad Czajkowski, who picked up the only win of the tournament also turned in a gem, striking out 3 and giving up 2 earned runs over 6 2/3. Brian Kusey drew the tough start against the vaunted Youth Services team and turned in one of his best outings of the young season. Andrew Neustaedter was also excellent in relief all tournament long. On the Offensive side of the ball, TJ Singh batted a team high .556. Lawrence Burton, Anthony Vacca, and Rob Toth had excellent at bats all weekend long. Adam Grace led all Rebels with 4 runs batted in. A very impressive showing for a still up and coming Rebels team.
Royce Consigli Signs on to be a Panther
The Niagara Rebels Organization would like to congratulate Royce Consigli for signing a national letter of intent with the University of Pittsburgh of the Big East Conference earlier this week. After being pursued by many of the nation's top schools such as Virgina Tech, University of Virgina, UNLV, Kansas, and Charleston Southern, Royce decided on Pittsburgh. Royce will be joining the Panthers for the beginning of training camp in the fall of 2009.
