Baseball kids get some college wisdom

    Thursday, February 05, 2009
    ADVANCE STAFF WRITER

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The young high school players who have been attending the Richmond County Baseball Club's winter workouts at the College of Staten Island are still buzzing about the recent three-hour visit by Rutgers head coach Fred Hill.

The connection was simple. The head of the RCBC is Nick Defendis, whose son John starred at the Big East school a few years back.

Hill, who has coached for 30 years, was joined by Darren Fenster, one of his assistants, and they captivated their audience with words of wisdom about what it takes to play college baseball.

"Most of the athletes at the workouts are looking to advance to the next level and coach Hill let them know the hard work needed to succeed at college ball," Defendis said. "You can tell them all the time but it certainly is more convincing coming from someone who has enjoyed so much success and been doing it so long"

Hill then concentrated on his expertise, which is hitting.

"Very few coaches know as much about hitting and can teach it as expertly as coach Hill can," said Defendis. "My son got better each year he played for Fred."

The coaches also worked with the youngsters on defense -- Hill tutored the infielders while Fenster took the outfielders.

"Coach Hill showed us the proper way to field grounders and throw it correctly," said Tottenville HS shortstop Greg Tauriello, "and he made us concentrate and focus on making all the plays."

A week earlier, Villanova pitching coach James Carron was on hand to work with the players.

The Wildcat coach had each hurler do a 35-40 pitch bullpen session off a mound with a lot of give-and-take.

"Coach Carron helped me with my mechanics," said Monsignor Farrell HS right-hander Matt Cascello. "He showed me how to release my hands quicker and it made my delivery much smoother."

"After watching coaches Hill, Fenster and Carron in action, I see a big difference with the players," said Defendis. "Their attitudes and desire looked better as they now know what must be done to have a good season with their high schools and sandlot teams this year."

Richmond County Baseball and the Big East Conference are setting up a nice partnership. Currently five players are on Big East teams and three played at Island high schools: Eddie Medina (Moore Catholic) is at St. John's; Frank Esposito (Farrell) plays at Seton Hall; and Tyler Sciacca (Farrell) is at Villanova.

                                                     KING OF THE NINE-YEAR-OLDS

Who are the Nine-Year-Old Cal Ripken Baseball Champions of New York State?????  Look no further than the Richmond County Youth Complex on Travis Avenue.  The Championship Trophy belongs to the Richmond County Baseball Club, managed by George Quinn and coaches, Allen Lauro and Dave Filimon.  The Nine Year Olds clinched the 2008 Metro New York State Championship for their age group with a 2-1 victory over Staten Island rival Robert Curatolo Rangers.  It was a thrilling game that saw Richmond County break the 1-all tie in the sixth inning when Lorenzo Quinn drew a walk; and got sacrificed to second.  Lorenzo advanced to third on a wild-pitch and scored on a fielder's choice.  The win went to reliever Daniel DiGiorgio who tossed 1-and 1/3 innings.  Daniel also drove in the first-run with a sacrifice fly.  Starting pitcher Anthony Prato pitched hitless ball in his 4-and 2/3 innings of work.  The victory gave RCBC an overall eye-popping record of 36-5 for an unbelievable .878 winning percentage, they have scored 484 runs and given up 171 runs in 41 games!  RCBC now travels to Hamilton, New Jersey to begin Regional Play against Northwest Pennsylvania.  Coach Quinn says he's had the perfect ingredients for a great team this year. "The kids are hard-workers who learn quickly",and the coaches have tremendous patience says Quinn.  "The kids and the parents have bought into our system leading to a perfect chemistry all around."
It took four earlier victories for RCBC to reach the title game.  In the semi-final contest, the Nine-Year-Olds defeated PlainEdge East, Long Island, by a 9-3 margin.  The winning pitcher was Rick DeVito and the hitting star was Frank Savino who had a pair of hits and three RBI's.  In the Pool Play Games, Richmond County beat their three opponents by a combined 35-9 count.  The winning pitchers were Prato, DeVito and Francis Perry.  Some of the hitting stars in those wins were Nick Battaglia, Anthony Maisano and Prato.

Franco who was on base four times while scoring twice and stealing a pair of bases.  Joe Geloso added three hits.
The second win came against a team from Dallas, Texas, by a 7-4 score.  Outfileder Jimmy Brennan, who stole the show in Troy, New York, kept up his star-studded play.  The centerfielder from Suffern, H.S. belted a grandslam.  It's his eventh homer in a week of tournament play.  Pavia added an RBI double.  The win went to reliever Matt DiPoalo of Christian Brothers H.S.
RCBC will be in Atlanta until Monday, July 14th.  We'll continue to update their progress.
