    The Hornets won a pair of tough Indy League games over the weekend to improve their league record to 7-3 and their overall record to 13-5.
    On Saturday, the Hornets defeated the St. Croix Ravens 5-3 at the Haugen Ballpark. Greg Aune pitched 8 1/3 innings for the win, with Ryan Meyers coming on to get the last two outs for the save. Meyers was the hitting star as well, going 2 for 3 and driving in three runs. Justin Everson scored three times for the Hornets.
    Sunday the Hornets had to battle from behind to defeat a scrappy Bruce Belters club. Bruce opened up a 4-0 lead by scoring three runs in the top of the fifth, of which only one was earned. The Hornets closed the gap to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth, behind back to back doubles by Paul Juza and Greg Aune. Aune's two-run single in the sixth capped a three-run inning as the Hornets grabbed the lead 5-4. Bruce regained the lead in the top of the eighth at 6-5 on an infield hit, three walks, and a hit batter. The Hornets finally erupted in the bottom of the eighth, scoring ten runs on five hits, four walks, and two errors. Ryan Meyers, in relief of Scott Schultz, got the win. Greg Aune and Jeremy Musil had three hits apeice to lead the offense. Brandon Johns and Steve Aune added a pair of hits each to the attack.

    The Hornets won a pair of games over the weekend to improve their overall record to 11-5 and Indy League record to 5-3. On Saturday night the Hornets pounded Blooming Valley 13-1 at the Haugen Ballpark in a non-league contest. Jordan Crotteau went the first seven innings to earn the win, fanning nine. Ryan Meyers struck out five over the last two innings. Jeremy Musil led the offense with three hits. Brian Waldvogel, Steve Aune, Joe Konop, Luke Larson, and Paul Juza had a pair of hits each. Juza had a three-run homer in fourth inning.

    On Sunday the Hornets used a 15-hit attack to defeat Grantsburg 12-8 in an Indy League contest at Grantsburg. Greg Aune and Justin Musil had three hits apeice to lead the offense. Brian Waldvogel, Paul Juza, Jeremy Musil, and Ryan Meyers all contributed a pair of hits to the attack. Scott Schultz, who came on in the second inning in relief of Greg Aune, pitched into the ninth to earn the victory. Bryan Johnson had a grandslam homer for Grantsburg in the second to give the Honkers a 5-4 lead. Schultz then shutout the Honkers until the ninth, as the Hornets opened up a 12-5 lead.

    The Hornets are at home both days next weekend, taking on the St. Croix Ravens on Saturday afternoon, and hosting Bruce on Sunday.

    The Haugen Hornets won a pair of games on Saturday to advance to the Championship game against the Exeland Braves in the Cumberland Tournament this past weekend. The Hornets opened with a 9-2 victory over the host Islanders in a game that counted in the Indy League standings. Greg Aune went the first seven innings for the victory, with Scott Schultz picking up the save. The Hornets broke open a 3-1 game with a six-run ninth. Greg Aune led the Hornets at the plate, with three hits, including two triples and four RBI's. Paul Juza added a pair of hits and drove in three runs.

    The Hornets defeated Blooming Valley 5-3 in the second round to advance to the championship. Scott Schultz got the win, with Ryan Meyers earning the save. Ryan Vavra and Joe Konop had two hits apeice for the Hornets. On a sad note, the Hornets lost Rich Weber for the season when he severed his achilles tendon running the bases in the sixth inning. Surgery to repair the injury is scheduled for later this week.

    The Exeland Braves pounded out 17 hits in defeating the Hornets 14-4 in the championship game. Exeland scored three times in the fourth and ended the game with a five-run fifth to break open a 6-4 contest. Justin Everson took the loss for the Hornets. Greg Aune led the offense with a pair of hits, including his third triple of the weekend.

    The Haugen Hornets won two out of three games last weekend, defeating Bloomer in a non-league contest and splitting league games, beating Stanberry 5-0, and falling to Spooner 4-2. The Hornets record stands at 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the Independent League.

    The Hornets play at Cumberland in an Indy League contest on Saturday at 11:00 am. This is part of the Cumberland Tournament that the Hornets will compete in this weekend. Blooming Valley, Exeland Braves, Spooner, and Bruce are the other teams entered in the six-team tourney.

    The Haugen Hornets split a pair of league games on the weekend, defeating Seeley 14-8 and getting shutout by St. Croix 9-0. Their record stands at 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the Indy League.

    In the win over Seeley, the Hornets used three homeruns to score nine of their runs. Paul Juza started the scoring with a three-run shot in the first. Greg Aune capped a seven run seventh, with a grandslam. Paul Juza finished the scoring with a two-run blast in the ninth. Scott Schultz picked up the win working the first six innings. Justin Musil contributed three hits to the Hornets offensive attack.

    T.J. Wink blanked the Hornets for the first seven innings as St. Croix shutout the Hornets 9-0 on Sunday. St. Croix broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third, with a two-out three run double, followed by a two-run homer. The Ravens added single runs in the sixth and seventh and two more in the eighth. Greg Aune took the loss for the Hornets.

    The Grantsburg Honkers handed the Hornets their first league loss by scoring five runs in the eighth and ninth innings to erase a 3-2 deficit and go on to 7-3 victory on Saturday. Bryon Johnson was the winning pitcher, while Greg Aune took the loss.

    The Hornets bounced back in the consolation game of the Memorial Weekend Tournament on Saturday, defeating the Blooming Valley Devils 12-4. Jordan Crotteau, Rich Weber, Ryan Meyers, and Scott Schultz shared the mound duties for the Hornets.

    The Exeland Braves won the four-team tournament, pounding Blooming Valley 14-4 in the first round, and defeating Grantsburg 10-2 in the championship game.

    The Haugen Hornets won a pair of games over the weekend, defeating
    Blooming Valley 14-2 in a non-league contest on Saturday, and shutting out Siren 15-0 in the Indy League opener on Sunday.

    Jeremy Musil, making a rare appearance on the mound, pitched the complete game, 14-2 win over Blooming Valley on Saturday. The Hornets provided plenty of run support, compiling thirteen hits in the seven inning contest. Paul Juza led the offense with three hits, including two doubles, and drove in five runs.

    In the league opener on Sunday, Greg Aune and Scott Schultz combined to shutout the Steelers on only three hits. The pair of right-handers had twelve strikeouts between them. Jeremy Musil led the twenty-one hit attack, collecting four singles. Steve Aune had three hits, including a double and a triple.

    The Hornets will host a four-team tournament at the Haugen Ballpark on Saturday. The tourney gets started at noon, with the Hornets facing Grantsburg in a Independent League contest. The second game, slated for 2:30 pm, has the Exeland Braves taking on Blooming Valley. The losers of the first two games will play at 4:30 pm, with the championship game scheduled for 6:30 pm.


    Updated May 11th

    The Haugen Knights defeated the Hornets 6-1 in a non-league contest on Saturday at the Haugen Ballpark. Travis Thompson was the winning pitcher, with relief help from Dan Lindsey. Scott Schultz started and took the loss for the Hornets. Rich Weber, Justin Everson, and Jordan Crotteau all worked in relief for the Hornets.

    The Hornets travel to Blooming Valley for a non-league contest on Saturday at 1:00pm. On Sunday, the Hornets are at Siren at 1:00 pm for the 2009 Independent League opener.

    The Hornets scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning and went on to defeat BCC 8-5 in the season opener on Sunday at the Haugen Ballpark. Greg Aune, Scott Schultz, and Jordan Crotteau shared the pitching duties for the Hornets. Jeremy Musil led the offense with three hits.

    The Hornets wore their new uniforms for the first time on Sunday and also played their first game without coaches Joe Juza and Steve Salmi, who both retired at the end of the 2008 season.

    The Hornets will play their hometown rival Haugen Knights in a non-league contest on Saturday, May 9th, at 1:00pm, at the Haugen Ballpark.
