UCYSL Scores Goal with Union City Council

More than 200 players’ coaches, board members and supporters represented UCYSL this past Wednesday night at the Union City monthly city council meeting to express their concerns regarding the recent loss of local Union City fields to non-resident and independent organizations and more importantly the city’s change in field permit allocations from bi-annual to quarterly.

Two weeks ago when UCYSL received 4th quarter field permits, they were informed that more than 50% of the field time at Shorty Garcia and Accinelli soccer specific parks, which were allocated to UCYSL back in July were allocated to a small independent soccer league, youth football and a new city program by the name of “Learn to be a Soccer Pro” for the 4
th quarter of the year. The recent loss of those field times forced UCYSL to immediately scramble to  make venue, match time and referee assignment changes mid season and send prompt notification to all participating teams and especially visiting teams.  Unfortunately, mid season schedule changes have been difficult to correlate with affiliated leagues CYSA, GSSL and US Club on such short notice and has resulted in some UCYSL competitive teams forfeiting matches.

On Wednesday night UCYSL board members along with the support of their membership in a standing room only city council meeting expressed their concerns to the Mayor Mark Green, city council and city staff regarding UCYSL field permit issues.  A number of UCYSL board members spoke at the council meeting including Coach Coordinator Victor Juarez, Competitive Coordinator John Sanchez and Web Master and designated UCYSL field permit Representative Luis Mejia.  Other speakers included a concerned UCYSL parent, under 16 boy’s volunteer coach and under 16 Alliance FC player Julia Shockey who stated, “If it doesn’t work out in Union City, (field availability) I would have to play for teams in Pleasanton or Danville and I don’t want to play for those teams, I want to represent my home town and play for Union City.”

After listening to  UCYSL concerns and issues, a very sympathetic Mayor Green concluded that the city do away with quarterly field permit allocations for next year and asked City Manager Larry Cheeves to immediately calendar a meeting supervised by the Sports  Advisory Committee to review future field permit allocations to UCYSL and other organizations.

UCYSL board would like to enthusiastically thank all those who attended the city council meeting in support of UCYSL and appreciate the continued patience and support of the entire UCYSL membership regarding this matter.

Weather Hotline
UCYSL will determine field closures due to rain or wet conditions for our home fields by 7:00 am on game day. It is against New Haven Unified School District School policy to play on wet fields.  If we close fields, it will be announced on our league line, which is 510-714-4703. We determine field closure only for our fields, so it does not apply to your away games.
