50th Anniversary Celebration

This coming season will mark the 50th anniversary of the Talleyville Girls Softball League.
Event planning to celebrate this milestone has already begun. A 50th Celebration Committee is currently forming and will begin meeting this month. Our current board members are busy working on the 2019 season and we are in dire need of additional volunteers for the 50th Celebration Committee. We are proud to say that the TGSL has grown rapidly and now accommodates over 550 girls. The responsibilities of our board increase every year and the approximate 20 members work extremely hard to make this league a success. If you have an interest in helping with the 2019 season please attend our next meeting scheduled for October 4th at Del-Vets.  You do not need to sit on the board or head a committee. We could simply use your help!

Talleyville Softball

History

The Talleyville Girls Softball League was founded as a neighborhood league in 1969 by three mothers who recognized the need for an organized after-school program for girls who had the desire to play softball. Games were played after school at Channin Elementary School and were coached solely by women (no men were permitted to be involved). Teams were organized by geographic location with no tryouts or drafting.

After several years of this informal approach, the league developed the organizational structure that still exists today. By 1979, the league was sanctioned by the Amateur Softball Association (A.S.A.).  In 2006, Talleyville became a Pony organization.

The league has grown both in size and reputation. Talleyville sponsors travel teams, which have competed nationally. The recreational league continues to provide opportunities for young girls to learn the sport and cultivate friendships.

In 2008, Talleyville Girls Softball opened up their new home at the former site of the Old Mill Lane School. These four fields have become the cornerstone of the future of softball at Talleyville.

Objectives

·         To teach sportsmanship within the context of a competitive environment

·         To provide the opportunity to make friendships

·         To improve and perfect softball skills

·         To have fun

Structure

The Recreational League has five divisions and the Travel Division competes outside the league. The Recreational League is divided as follows, with December 31st as the age-determining date for each division:

Pony Division Girls from ages 4 to 6
Mustang Division Girls from ages 7 to 8
Junior-1 Division Girls ages 8 to 10
Junior-2 Division Girls ages 10 to 12
Senior Division Girls from age 13 through 19

The Talleyville Travellers are comprised of competitive teams under ASA, USSSA, NSA, and Pony guidelines in the following divisions: 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U
