About the USPL

The Unionville Slo-Pitch League (USPL) was founded in 1974 as a recreational men’s softball league for players of all skill levels. Today, the USPL comprises three divisions that cater to the diverse needs of players.

The Open Division is our most competitive division, with 16 teams competing for promotion and relegation based on their regular season performance. This division is for players aged 21 and above, and there is no upper age limit.

Our Open 40+ Division is designed for players aged 40 and above who wish to continue playing at a highly competitive level with players closer to their age group. The division consists of six teams that play at a higher level.

Lastly, our Masters Division is a more recreational slo-pitch league for players aged 40 and above. It consists of six teams that play games in a more relaxed environment.

The 2024 USPL season is set to begin on Monday, May 13th, marking the start of our 50th consecutive year of slo-pitch play. From May to September, teams will play between 25 to 27 regular season games. After the regular season, playoff brackets will be formed, and games will be played over two weeks in the middle of September. The Championship Weekend (September 20-22) will feature a beer and food tent, music, and some outstanding slo-pitch games.

We take pride in fostering a sense of fellowship, camaraderie, and community among our members. The bonds formed between teammates and opposing players have led to countless long-term friendships, making the USPL a unique and cherished part of our community.

We welcome new players and teams to join our league and become a part of our slo-pitch family. If you're interested in participating in the 2024 season, please click on the 2024 USPL Registration link on the right-hand side near the top of the league homepage.

We look forward to seeing you on the field!

USPL 2023 Playoff Rules

EQUAL PLAY

No player may sit twice until all players have sat one inning (except in the case of a late arrival) No player may sit three times until all players have sat two innings and so on

Late arrivals must play in the game and will be considered as having sat any missed defensive innings. Late arrivals must play in the game and go to the bottom of the order. A player showing up after the 3rd inning cannot enter the game.

At the request of the opposing team, if a sit violation is not corrected, a forfeit of the game may occur pending the review by the USPL executive following the completion of the game (FYI, a few years ago, a team in the playoffs was forfeited by the executive because of a sit violation that was not corrected, so please be careful)

BTW...the EQUAL PLAY rule is not the responsibility of the umpire to track or administrate. It is up to the teams. The umpire's only involvement is to assist and mediate any violation that one team might bring up upon the other.

COURTESY RUNNERS

Open Division > 5 courtesy runners per team (all runners must be different as per SPN rules)

Masters & 40+ Divisions > Unlimited courtesy runners (runners may only run ONCE per inning as per SPN rules)

HOME RUN RULE

Home Runs are plus TWO...after that, it becomes an OUT. Please keep track of the other teams' home runs to avoid conflicts

SPARES

There are no spares allowed in the playoffs, roster players ONLY.

a)      If a team has 9, they play with 9

b)      If a team has 8, the other team can offer a catcher. The catcher is NOT LIVE and cannot make plays at home.

c)      If a team has 7, the team is defaulted

GAME LENGTH

Round Robin games will be seven (7) innings long or time limit. No new inning after 80 minutes. The inning must finish if started including the bottom of an inning for plus/minus. Elimination games will be 7 innings with NO TIME LIMIT.

INNING MERCY

There will be a six (6) run “mercy rule” in each of the first 5 innings. There is no “mercy rule” in innings 6 and/or 7.  These innings will be open

GAME MERCY

The game mercy will be 12 runs after 5 innings (or 4.5 if the home team is leading). The game mercy will be in effect in ALL games including the Finals in all divisions

PLUS/MINUS (round robin only)

The HOME team must bat in the bottom of the 7th if they are not ahead by 7 or more runs (for tie-breakers, the maximum plus/minus per game is 7 runs). Once the maximum of 7 runs has been achieved the game is over.

EXTRA INNINGS

There will be no extra innings in round-robin games. Ties are allowed during round-robin. During elimination games, if teams are tied after 7 innings, the last official batter in the previous inning starts at 2nd base, with one out (after the runner has gone to 2nd base, he can be subbed as per regular courtesy runner rules)

HOME TEAMS

The home team for the round-robin is the higher-seeded team from the regular season.

The home team for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final games (i.e.: elimination games) is the higher-seeded team after the round-robin.

BALLS

Umpires will provide balls for ALL games. Please give them backup balls if requested

TIE BREAKER RULES

·        Head-to-head

·        Plus/Minus

·        Total Runs for in all round-robin games (higher is best)

·        Total Runs Against in all round-robin games (lower is best)

·        Coin Toss

MASTERS ONLY > GRASS RULE

Infielders MUST start on the dirt to be able to make a play at first base. After contact, if the infielder is taken onto the grass normally in making a play on the ball, they are still able to throw to first base. An infielder that starts on the grass CANNOT make the play at first base. No relays or indirect throws are permitted to make an out at first base once the ball is in the outfield. (A fielder may throw to second base but that player may not throw to first base). A five-man infield is permitted. That fifth infielder must start on the dirt and is considered an infielder for the purposes of this rule and the infield fly rule.

RIP Paul Giallonardo

It is with heavy hearts that we have received the news of the passing of Paul Giallonardo, a distinguished USPL alumnus.

Losing someone so young and with such potential is a great loss. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this challenging time. We hope that they may find solace in the cherished memories and legacy that Paul has left behind. May he rest in eternal peace.

Paul John Giallonardo- aka- Paulie G, aka- Senor Smoke, aka- Handsome Boy but above all what Paul should, and will best be known as…our friend.

Paulie and I have known each other since we were 6 years old growing up in Unionville just a few streets apart. Paul and I played hockey in the winter and baseball in the summer. If we weren’t on the ice or on the diamond, we were playing Mini sticks in the basement at 140 Aitken Circle or 39 Ferndall with a bunch of the other boys. Paulie was the epitome of a gentle giant, but don’t fool yourself - when someone had issues with his friends, he was always the one guy to have your back. That’s what was so great about Paul; he was always there for his friends. As we grew older, softball and beers in the parking lot or beer tent was one of his favourite things, just being together with everyone. Driving up north to softball tournaments, which felt like happened every weekend, were epic adventures. I remember asking Paulie once Sunday during a tournament in Dorchester if we may have been over served the night before, and Paul responding by passing me a Coors Light at 9am….

Derek: Paul, I can’t, I need to be sober for this Sunday’s Championship run!

Paul: Q, how many tounemtns have we played in?

Derek: A lot!

Paul: And how do we normally fare?

Derek: Pretty good to be honest

Paul: Annnnnnd are we not buzzed while we play and win?

Derek: Good point buddy. Give me the beer. 😊

That was Paulie, always sharing Lombardi type pep talks when you needed it.

Paulie loved hanging with the boys, having  a few at the Arms and maybe even a late-night Bowl Kee run for anyone that was willing for some spicy shrimp.

Paulie was also an amazing uncle as anyone could see, even from a distance, if you observed him at the ball diamonds.

The special bond shared was not just with Paulie, but with the entire ‘G’ family. We spent numerous family trips to Notre Dame and Michigan to cheer on our Irish. My heart breaks for this amazing family as they raised a proud, smart, and very kind man and this loss is beyond immense.

There are so many great memories that we shared together and those, I will keep with me forever.

It looks like our buddy T-Day needed a #4 power bat with a vacuum glove at 3rd base for the softball team he is assembling in heaven.

Paulie G was my dear friend, and I will miss him very much. Gone but NEVER, EVER, forgotten.

Love you buddy.

RIP Washington Brooks

We are deeply saddened to inform you of the passing of Mr. Washington Brooks on August 27th.

Affectionately known as "Wash," he was in Hawaii when he experienced health complications that his wife, Carla, suspects to be related to his heart.

Wash was a highly respected member of the Master's Division Cool Bet team, and he had been an invaluable part of our community for more than twenty years. The league will hold a ceremony to commemorate fallen members at Crosby, and Wash's name will be engraved on the bench alongside those of other members who left us too soon.

Wash was a kind, easy-going, and fun-loving person who always acted with class. He was the best teammate one could ask for, and he will be sorely missed.

Our sincerest condolences go out to Wash's family and friends during this tough time.

RIP Tom Fujiwara

It is with great sadness that we share the news of Tom Fujiwara's passing on August 31, 2023.

Tommy, or Fuji as he was affectionately known, was an integral member of the USPL for over 20 years.?His exceptional pitching skills and warm smile brought the Remax team to six USPL championships. Tommy also served as an executive member of the USPL and played a significant role in introducing the Master's division which?we enjoy to this day.?

He was a true gentleman, and his positive attitude and competitive nature will be deeply missed.

We would like to offer our heartfelt condolences to his son Jeff and his entire family during this challenging time.
?

RIP John Convery

It is with great sadness that we share the news of John Convery's passing on October 25, 2023.

John fought a courageous 14-month battle with Glioblastoma. He played in the USPL for numerous years, always with a smile on his face for everyone.

We would like to offer our heartfelt condolences to his entire family during this challenging time.

RIP Trevor Day

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we have learned of the passing of Trevor Day.

Trevor “Chelli” Day was beloved by all of us that got to know him over the years. A wonderful teammate, a fantastic pitcher, a fierce competitor and one of the best opposite-field hitters to play, he loved going first to third, pop-up slides and sharing his passion and knowledge of the game. He loved to win but more than that, he loved to be around the park with his friends, and especially his best friend, Zeus. Zeus was always at the park with Dad and watched him play every game, usually making new friends who looked after him while his dad was on the field.

He is gone far too soon and will be missed terribly by his mom Donna, his father Dave and his best buddy Zeus - as well as everyone who he came across.

Rest easy TDay, your 15 will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Love always.

Sick Kids Donation

I want to give a very big THANK YOU to you and the other League Executives and all the players in the league for supporting the Lemonade Stand and donating the great prizes for the raffle.   The proceeds from the Lemonade Stand/Raffle and the generous donations from the Teams at the year end banquet, pushed our total raised to $5,000 which we have donated to Sick Kids to support research to find a cure for Ava. My family is very appreciative of all the league has done for us.

 All the best!
