VIDEO OF THE WEEK - Moving off the ball, communication, quick shots September 21, 2009 —
This video demonstrates how important it is to use space in order to pass and shoot well. Notice how as soon as the pass is made, the other player is already calling for the ball and getting open into space. They do not run toward each other for passes or steal the ball from each other. Instead, they use the width of the field and communicate to make better shooting opportunities. When the player takes the ball and shoots rather than to pass, he shoots after ONE touch. He uses the ONE touch to place the ball away from the defender (a little too far out in front of himself, but still ok) and then strikes it right away. He has to strike the ball from a sharp angle. When he goes to strike the ball, he rotates his body and hips fully so that when he takes the shot his body is facing the goal.
IMPORTANT POINTS
1) Players communicate and immediately move into space to receive a pass/to shoot. They never play the ball toward a defender.
2) They are not close together, but increase the space by spreading out. They also are not directly behind the defender, so there is a path to pass into.
3) When they have an opportunity to shoot, they either strike it immediately (one-time shot) or use one touch to set up the ball and then a QUICK HARD shot. NO PLAYING WITH THE BALL IN THE BOX.
VIDEO OF THE WEEK.
Here is a video to watch based on the defensive techniques we learned last week. Watch to see the differences between running too fast at the attacker vs. slowing them down/forcing them where you want them to go.
