    PSU sweeps No. 5 Minnesota
The top-ranked Penn State women's volleyball team (18-0, 6-0) remained the only unbeaten team in the Big Ten with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-14) victory against No. 5 Minnesota Sunday afternoon. Penn State's NCAA-record winning streak improved to 82 consecutive matches.
Senior Megan Hodge (Durham, N.C.) led the team with 21 kills and junior Blair Brown (Purcellville, Va.) was second on the team with 13 kills. Junior Fatima Balza (Merida, Venezuela) finished first on the squad with four total blocks, while junior Arielle Wilson (Broadview, Ill.) Brown both has three apiece. Senior setter Alisha Glass (Leland, Mich.) dished our 46 assists and totaled 11 digs. Junior Cathy Quilico led the team with 14 digs, while junior libero Alyssa D'Errico posted 13.
The Nittany Lions finish up their four-match road trip with trips to No. 8 Michigan and No. 18 Michigan State on Oct. 16-17. Penn State faces the Wolverines on Friday at 7 p.m. with its match with the Spartans following on Saturday at 7 p.m.

IMPACT PLAYER ...: My two cents ... When Chuck Gojmerac was named Central's athletic director, I said there will be a great impact on two fronts. First, Central. We all know Chuck's dedication to student athletes at Central and his professionalism. The second impact would be getting the ear of the fellow athletic directors and the respect of the District 6 committee. Volleyball wouldn't be an after thought when it came to consideration or bettering the sport. The reason I mention this is because of Chuck's latest push to improve the District 6 girls volleyball playoffs. There were problems with the playoffs set-up. At Altoona High School, fans had to watch their favorite team in the semifinals on the far court through another match? Secondly, the semifinals and finals were played back to back on Saturday. The D6 playoffs became a test of endurance as much as a test of skills. And what other sport requires teams to play back to back matches within 20 minutes of each other? For Class A and AA District 6 playoffs, Chuck made a suggestion to the athletic directors to move the quarterfinal play-in match to Monday of playoff week. Quarterfinals on Tuesday. Semifinals on Thursday. A single championship match on Saturday. This should help increase the crowd because volleyball followers will know for sure their team is playing for a District 6 championship. All of this was done in the best interests of the fans and student-athletes and to better the sport of volleyball. Thanks Chuck.

BRYANT SWEEPS SFU: The Saint Francis women’s volleyball team had chances in sets two and three, but Bryant rallied to take the sets in a 3-0 sweep of the Red Flash on Sunday afternoon at DeGol Arena.
The Bulldogs hit .247 on the day and had seven service aces to hand SFU a 25-16, 25-22, 25-23 loss. The Red Flash dropped to 4-15 overall and 1-2 in the Northeast Conference with the loss. Saint Francis will try to bounce back with a 7 p.m. NEC match against in-state rival Robert Morris on Wednesday night.
Freshman Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio / Saint Ursula) paced the Red Flash with 10 kills and a .444 hitting percentage to go with two digs and two blocks. Senior Shirley Miller (Fairless Hills, Pa. / Pennsbury) had seven kills, four digs and one block, senior Rikki Myers (Noblesville, Ind. / Westfield) dished out 26 assists and had two aces, and freshman Lauren Wingard (York, Pa. / Dallastown Area) hit .333 with six kills and a match-high five blocks.
