BSAL Champions 2009
Berkeley High School Men's Lacrosse

NCS Semifinal ended with a 4:16 loss to De La Salle! A large contingent of Berkeley fans witnessed an exciting game at the NCS semifinals at De La Salle High school. Unfortunately the Spartans went ahead 3:0 in the first minutes of the game and never gave up the lead. Berkeley had many shots at the goal, but only 4 shots went into the net. The Spartans were faster, more accurate in their shots, and more aggressive chasing the ball. The Jackets never got their game going and showed too much respect for their opponent.

This loss means the end of the season for the jackets, a season they can be very proud of. An 18 game winning streak bracketed by the only regular season loss in the first game and another one in the NCS Semifinal. A truly great season, a remarkable turnaround from last year, and an exciting start for a new tradition under Coach Ed Hill.

Jackets win number 18 in a row What a game! The visiting Jackets brought a strong crowd to Acalanes High School in Lafayette to revenge the only loss in their regular season. The cheers and claps did not stop as the Dons went ahead by one goal. A fumble in front of the Jakets' goal led to 2:0 for the Dons. After 3:0 in the first quarter the Jackets woke up and remembered their strengths. The first half ended 4:2 Dons, but by effort the Jackets were clearly ahead: more shots at the goal, longer possession, stronger defense. The end of the third quarter showed the teams even at 4. In the last quarter the Dons got a quick goal, but the Jackets soon even the score. With a little more than a minute to go, the Jackets went ahead 5:6 and managed to hold off the exhausted Dons to win the NCS quarterfinal. Fans of both teams came away with the satisfaction of having witnessed agreat game. Berkeley fans are at once exhilarated to move on to the next round and worried about meeting De La Salle next Wednesday. Go Team, Go!

Undefeated (almost): 14 game winning streak held against Piedmont Coach Ed and his Jackets ended the regular season on a special high note. A second definitive defeat of powerhouse Piedmont Highlanders in an amazing game reestablishes the Berkeley Lacrosse legacy. The game was played in pouring rain on Piedmonts turf. Shortly after the Highlanders' senior appreciation, the reality set in. Berkeley went up by one, by two, by three, before Piedmont knew th egame had started. Jon Chee was amazing in winning face-offs, he even managed to snag th eball on the one or two face-offs he did not win outright. The Berkeley offense was consistent and relentless. If there was no chance going around the third time, the ball went around the goal again, until Cameron or somebody else was n scoring position to put the ball in the net. The defense was equally strong and determined to deny Piedmont scoring opportunities, aided by a couple saves by Sam Tucker. In the fourth quarter, the Jackets confidence and the Highlanders' desparation collided a few times. But even with two men down, Piedmont was unable to score. The game and the regular season ended with a 14:5 victory by the Berkeley Jackets extending their winning streak to 14 games.

Playoffs the Jackets are coming!

Jackets are 12 and 1 in a convincing 16:2 win over St. Mary's The Jackets dominated the trailing BSAL team, St. Mary's Panthers. The Panthers had some great players, but committed overall too many mistakes to execute an effective offense. The Jackets' were overall more consistent and effective putting the ball in the Panthers' net. The 16:2 win over St. Mary's marks the 12 win in an uninterrupted march towards the BSAL title.

Eleven game winning streak after 6:2 win over Bishop O'Dowd The Jackets extend their winning streak and leading position in the BSAL with a hard fought 6:2 win over the Bishop O'Dowd Dragons. Three minutes into the game the Jackets went ahead 1:0 and never gave up the lead. The first half ended with a 3:2 lead despite strong pressure by the dragons. After a scoreless third quarter the Jackets exploded at the beginning of the fourth and added three beautiful goals in short order.

Jackets extend winning streak to 10 against Davis After a two week break the Jackets trecked out to Davis Senior High in Davis, CA. Despite some dropped balls and other avoidable mishaps, the Jackets dominated the first half and led 4:2 by halftime. In the third quarter Davis regrouped and increased the pressure on the Berkeley goal. A good defense and a solid performance by Sam Tucker, though, kept them from scoring. Our splendid offense added four more goals for a final score of Berkeley 8 to Davis 2.

Jackets Rule!  The Berkeley High Yellow jackets played against number 2 Piedmont High this afternoon. The first quarter started quickly with an ominous Berkeley goal. Not much happened the rest of the half. Both teams tested each other. The Jackets had quite a few chances, but the shots either missed the net or were caught by the Piedmont goalie. After the halftime break, Piedmont took advantage of a three minute equipment penalty for Berkeley to get ahead 2:1. Thanks to Trevor Wolf's heroic efforts to duck the Piedmont defense and hit one in the net, the Jackets stayed in the game. The fourth quarter saw quick goals by both teams and a long battle for the lead. Our goalie, Kendrik Young, had a few spectacular saves that earned him the game ball. Seb Zorn made two great catches with his long stick that stopped the Piedmont offense. With about a minute to go the Jackets took the lead ad managed to hold on to the ball long enough o win 4:3 over Piedmont High. The photo by Mark Altenberg captures the spirited battle.
