    2009 Parkersburg Big Reds Volleyball Team

    PHS Big Reds defeat #1 Spring Valley to win the MSAC Tourney
    After breezing through pool play by defeating Woodrow Wilson, South Charleston, and Nitro, the Big Reds played 3 tough matches to win the final tournamant of the regular season.

    In quarter-final play, PHS defeated George Washington, 25-11, 26-24 behind high percentage hitting, and 5 service aces from senior captain Emily Patterson.

    Ripley fell in semi-final play in a tough 3 game match, 24-26. 25-19, 25-19. Setters Chelsea Conley and Carly White combined for 37 assists (both were over 50% asst percentage), and Ripley could only watch as Renee Cox downed an unassisted spike for the final match point. Strong back row defense was led by Conley with 14 digs, followed by Jocelyn Dansey and Patterson with 10 each. Dansey added 5 blocks of front row defense.

    In the Championship match, PHS defeated Spring Valley in another hard fought 3 game match, 19-25, 25-19, 25-18. The Timberwolves had no answer to Kayla Lowers who hit 20 for 41 in the match, downing 13 kills in the last game. Dansey and Patterson combined for 9 service aces.

    MSAC Tournament Highlights:
    Hitters: Lowers-62, Dansey-52, Patterson-46
    Acers: Patterson-16, Dansey,Lowers - 7 each, White-5
    Assists: Conley -80, White-67
    Diggers: Lowers-39, Dansey-32, Conley-30, Pattereson-27

    PHS's record going into the run for the State Crown is 41-8-3. They face the winner of PSHS and Nitro on Wed Nov 4th at the PHS fieldhouse.





    PHS Bows Out of Huntington Tourney in Semi-final round
    After a perfect pool play record, defeating Woodrow Wilson, George Washington and Huntington B, the Big Reds fell in the semi-finals in a tough match to Woodrow 22-25, 25-27.

    Big Reds win Hedgesville Inviational
    After splitting with Hedgesville in the first round of pool play, the Big Reds defeated them in the tournament championship,25-19, 25-21. PHS easily defeated Preston, Petersburg and Jefferson in pool play to go 5-1. In the semi-finals, the Big Reds defeated a tougher Frankfort team 25-18, 25-15 to gain the championship match.

    BIG REDS win the PSHS Fall Brawl
    After bowing out in the Semi-final round of the last 4 tournaments, the PHS Big Reds put it all together to win the PSHS Fall Brawl. PHS won their pool easily defeating Tyler, Hedgesville, PSHS B team, and tying Richie Co. In the Semi's, PHS defeated the Williamstown YellowJackets in straight games 25-18, 25-15.

    In the championship game, The Big Reds faced a tough and determined Richie Co. PHS won a close first game 25-23, and overwhelmed the Rebels in game 2 25-16.

    Tournament Highlights: Chelsea Conley set a season high service point record with 22 points against Hedgesville. Tournament high scoreres were Conley-41, Patterson, 36, and Kayla Lowers-30. Leading service acers were Patterson-11, and Maddie Morgan-8. Kill leaders were Patterson-32, Lowers-30, and Renee Cox-27. Defensively, total digs were led by Patterson-28, Lowers-24, and block leaders were Emily Tannous-7, and Jocelyn Dansey and Cox with 5 each.

    Emily Patterson was selected to the all tournament team.


    Big Reds Reach Semi-finals at Cabell Midland
    PHS finished pool play 3-1, losing only to Spring valley in their 1st match of the day. They then defeated South Charleston, George Washington, and Nitro.
    The Big Reds then met and defeated a tough Cabell Midland home team in 3 games in the quarter-finals. In the Semi-final match, Parkersburg again met this year's nemesis, the Spring Valley Timberwolves. After losing the opening game 18-25, the Big Reds bounced back 25-17. Spring Valley prevailed in a hard fought tiebreaker 18-25.

    Tournament highlights include: The Acers: Kayla Lowers-8, Jocelyn Dansey-8, Maddie Morgan-7, Emily Patterson-6, Carly White-6. The Killers: Dansey-37, Renee Cox-28, Lowers-25, Emily Tannous-23, Patterson-22. The diggers: Patterson-39, Lowers-25, Chelsea Conley-20, White-18. The setters: Conley-63 assists, White-56. Jocelyn Dansey was selected to the all tournament team.

    PHS's next tournament is the Capital Invitational on October 3rd.


    PHS Reaches Semi-finals at Snowball Invitational
    In a tough loss and a close match against Spring Valley, the Big Reds bowed out of this year's Snowball Invitational in the semifinal round. Spring Valley went on to win the Championship by defeating Woodrow Wilson.

    The Big Reds were undefeated in pool play against Capital, Hurricane, and Independence. Emily Patterson and Jocelyn Dansey were voted onto the All- tournament team.

    The next contest is a tri-meet at the Charleston Civic Center on Thursday evening, Sept 17th, against Winfield and Ripley. GO BIG REDS!


    PHS Reaches Semi-Final round at Oak Glen
    The PHS varsity squad racked up 4 wins and a perfect record through pool play only to fall victim to the tournament host team of Oak Glen in the first round of tournament play. The Big Reds got off to a stellar start by knocking off last year's state champs, Musselman, 25-20, 25-20.
    They went on to defeat Frankfort, Philip Barbour, and Fairmont East in straight games. Their dominance over Fairmont East allowed Coach Harnish to sub liberally.

    Oak Glen, who has played the Big Reds tough in scrimmage play this year, outlasted a late push by Parkersburg 25-21, 27-25. Stats are available on the bulletin board link on the leftof the page.

    The Big Reds play host to 15 other teams st the Snowball Invitational on Sept.12 at the fieldhouse starting at 9 am.
