July 6, 2009 The Pirates dropped a game to the Brunswick Orioles Monday night as big left hander Steve Kozak took the loss. Kozak allowed 5 runs through 4 innings pitched while walking 5. The Boonsboro starter was not the only one to struggle Monday night as the Pirates only manufactured 2 runs on 7 hits. “Tonight just wasn’t our night”, said manager Matt Noll “Kozie didn’t have his typical stuff, we didn’t hit in key situations, and we kicked the ball around in the field, it’s tough to win games playing like that”, added Noll. Boonsboro’s bullpen did a great job as Kenny Reisinger threw 2 innings while striking out 2 and allowing 3 hits, and Jimmy Duggan threw a perfect 7th striking out the side. Josh Simons 1-3; Kyle Kane 1-4; Mike Spry 2-3 with a HR and 2 RBI; Nicky Brown 1-4; and Matt Noll 1-2 with a run led the Bucs offensively. Pirates Use Kane to Walk-off in 7th
July 5, 2009 The Pirates jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning Sunday. Catcher Nate Himes and 2nd baseman Nicky Brown jump started the inning with back-to-back 1 out singles and DH Matt Noll followed with a single of his own to plate both Himes and Brown. In the top of the 4th the Express retaliated by scoring 2 runs to tie the game. In the 5th inning the Express would reach Boonsboro pitcher Brandon Armentrout for another run giving Brunswick a 3-2 lead. Himes was the catalyst again in the bottom of the 6th when he led off with a single. Noll then bunted Himes to 2nd base and with 2 outs centerfielder Matt Byers singled in Himes to knot the game at 3 a piece. In the bottom of the 7th left fielder John Holcumb led off the inning by reaching base after a strike out allowing Boonsboro’s number 3 hitter Kyle Kane to hit with a man on. Kane took the 2-2 offering and deposited it over the centerfield fence for a walk off homerun giving the Pirates their 14th win of the year. “We talked about possibly bunting or even trying to hit and run with Kyle there, but he came up big in the same situation a few games ago so we decided to let him swing, turned out to be the right call”, said manager Matt Noll. Craig Henson threw 2 scoreless innings for Bucs earning the win, his second of the year. “Trout had good stuff out there today, he knew coming into the game that we only needed 4 or 5 innings from him it’s a shame we couldn’t have gotten him the decision, but Craig did a great job out of the pen”, said Noll. Offensively the Pirates we led by Nate Himes 3-3, 2 runs scored; Matt Noll 1-1, 2 RBI, BB, Sac bunt, and stolen base; Josh Simons 2-4; and Kyle Kane 1-2, HR, 2RBI, a run scored, and 2 BB’s. Kenny Reisinger, usually a reliever got the starting nod and threw 2 perfect innings collecting 3 strike outs. The Pirates pushed a run across in the bottom of the 2nd when catcher Nate Himes got things rolling with a single to left field DH Matt Noll followed with a single to center and right fielder Brandon Armentrout drove in Himes with a single to right. with 1 out and runners on 1st and 2nd base the game was delayed and eventually cancelled due to rain. The game will be rescheduled and have to be restarted. The Pirates are back in action at home Sunday at 4:00.

    Kozak Shuts Out Orioles
June 29, 2009 Monday night was the game the Pirates considered to be the biggest game of the season and who better to have on the bump than their left handed ace Steve Kozak. Kozak threw an absolute gem as he went to the distance shutting down Brunswick’s offense; holding the O’s to 3 hits and only allowing 4 base runners. The game was scoreless for 3 ½ innings until DH Nate Himes singled to lead off the 4th inning. Catcher Matt Noll then bunted Himes to 2nd base, Himes then advanced to 3rd on left fielder Tommy Flynn’s high chopper. With 2 outs and centerfielder Matt Byers at the plate Brunswick pitch John Karavitch bulked in the only run of the ball game. “That was a great game tonight, two great pitchers, and two great ball clubs battling it out”, said manager/catcher Matt Noll. “Kozak has been good all year, but tonight he was phenomenal. In, out, fastball, curve ball, change up it didn’t matter he threw them all for strikes in any count”, added Noll. The Pirates did have 7 hits; shortstop Josh Simons, 3rd baseman John Holcumb, right fielder Mike Spry, 2nd baseman Nicky Brown, catcher Nate Himes, left fielder Tommy Flynn, and centerfielder Matt Byers all had a hit a piece. The Pirates will take on the Express at home Wednesday night. Game time is 6:15.

Sleepy Pirates Wake Up to Split with Titans
June 28, 2009 The Pirates looked very sluggish in the first game on Sunday as they took on the Tri-State Titans. After reaching Boonsboro hurler Tony Magnanelli for 3 runs by the 3rd inning he was pulled due to discomfort in his right elbow. Craig Henson the expected game 2 starter came into the game in the top of the 3rd inning with no one out already trailing 3-0. The Pirates would cut the lead to 1 in the bottom of the 3rd when right fielder Mike Spry hit a 2 run shot to left field plating himself and 1st baseman Steve Kozak, who singled earlier in the inning. Although the Pirates threatened over the course of the game bad base running and stellar defensive plays by the Titans held the Boonsboro in check. Tri-State would manage 4 runs off of Henson who threw 5 innings while striking out 8 and allowing just 1 walk. “I thought Craig threw the ball extremely well today, he was called on well before he was planning to pitch and did a great job”, said manager/catcher Matt Noll. The loss went to Magnanelli his 1st in 2 years as a Pirate. “The loss is no big deal but the injury does have us concerned, Mags is a big time pitcher and we need him to be healthy down the stretch,” said Noll. Catcher Matt Noll 2-3; Spry 1-2 with 2 RBI and a run; and Kozak 1-2 with a run scored led the Bucs offensively in game 1.

Game 2 was much different story as the shorthanded Pirates called on ace Brandon Armentrout. Despite not being a 100 percent and constantly pitching out of jams Armentrout went on to shut out the Titans collecting his 4th win of the season, improving his record to 4-0, “Trout has been great all year, he takes the ball whenever you need him to and he just keeps giving us quality outings, he was in and out of trouble all day but just managed to stay poised and bulldog it out”, said manager/catcher Matt Noll. After the offense was slowed in game 1 it wasted no time getting things going in game 2 as the Pirates exploded in the 1st inning for 4 runs. Shortstop Josh Simons got things rolling with a lead off walk, Nicky Brown followed with a single, Mike Spry then was walked, left fielder Kyle Kane singled home Simons. Nate Himes then drove a ball through the glove of the Titans’ 2nd baseman to plate Brown and Spry. Catcher Matt Noll would cap the scoring with a sac fly to right to plate Kane. The Pirates would add a run in the 3rd as 1st baseman Nate Kaetzel singled to drive in Noll, who reached earlier on a fielder’s choice. Boonsboro would tack on their final run in the bottom of the 6th when Kane would single home Simons (fielder’s choice). “It was nice to see us bounce back and play our type of baseball after how badly we looked in the first game”, said Noll. In game 2; Kane 2-3 with 2 RBI and a run; and Kaetzel 1-3, RBI led the Pirates offensively. The Pirates remain at home tomorrow as they will take on their Blue Ridge rival the Brunswick Orioles. Game time is 6:15.

Kane Has Golden Touch: Homerun Breaks Tie in Top of 7th
June 24, 2009 It was a back and forth game Wednesday night as the Pirates took on the Braves at North Hagerstown High. Big left hander Steve Kozak started for Boonsboro and surrendered 2 first inning runs compliments of back-to-back doubles from Nathan Minnich and Matt Ridenour. After throwing a scoreless 2nd inning the Pirates cut the lead to 1 run when catcher Nate Himes led the inning off with a double, Dh Matt Noll moved Himes to 3rd with a fielder’s choice, and with 2 outs newcomer Tommy Flynn singled home Himes. The Pirates would tie the game in the 3rd when 2nd baseman Nicky Brown would double home 3rd baseman John Holcumb, who singled earlier in the inning. The Braves would respond in their half of the 3rd with 2 more runs pushing the score to 4-2. The Pirates and Braves would both go quietly in the 4th; however, Boonsboro would take the lead in the top of the 5th inning. Holcumb got things rolling with a double to lead off the inning. Brown was then hit by a pitch, 1st baseman Kyle Kane hit into a fielder’s choice but due to great hustle everyone was safe. Himes followed with a ground ball to 1st base that was misplayed to plate Holcumb and kept the bases loaded. Matt Noll then singled home Brown to tie the game at 4, and left fielder Brandon Armentrout singled home Himes to give the Pirates the lead. In the bottom of the 6th the Braves would knot the game at 5 by manufacturing a run off of a Pirate error. With the game tied in the 7th Kyle Kane took the 2nd pitch of the inning and belted it over the left field fence to give the Pirates the lead for good. “Kyle did a great job of hitting there, he was looking for something to drive and luckily he got it. We were looking to score a run any way we could there and Kyle made it easy on us” said manager Matt Noll. With lead secure the Bucs gave the ball to reliever Jimmy Duggan who after loading the bases eventually earned the save. Kozak earned the win, going 6 innings allowing 5 runs while striking out 3. “Kozie didn’t have his best stuff tonight, I think he was just too rested”, said Noll “but he ate up some innings and did enough to keep us in the ball game”. Offensively the Bucs were led by Holcumb 2-3 with a double and a run,; Brown 1-3 with a double and a RBI; Kane 1-4 with a HR, an RBI, and 2 runs scored; Himes 2-4 with 2 runs; Noll 2-4 with an RBI; and Armentrout 1-3 with an RBI. The Pirates will be back in action Sunday for a double header at home as they take on the Tri-State Titans from Cumberland. Game time is 1:00.

Armentrout Dominant as Bucs Collect 10th Win
June 22, 2009 After 7 full innings of baseball the Pirates and Express found themselves right where they started…in a scoreless game. The Pirates started Brandon Armentrout who was absolutely dominant going 8 strong innings while collecting 8 punch outs and only allowing 2 hits for the win, his 3rd of the year. The Express pushed across the 1st run of the game in the top of the 8th with a perfect 2 out squeeze. Right fielder Nate Kaetzel got the Pirates rolling in their half of the 8th when he reached base on a misplayed fly ball to right. 1st baseman Steve Kozak legged out a sacrifice bunt attempt to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. After botching 2 bunt attempts shortstop Josh Simons belted an 0-2 pitch off the left field fence for an RBI double and tied the game. 3rd baseman John Holcumb looked as though he had ended the game with a sac fly to right, but a great throw the plate beat Kozak for the 2nd out of the inning. With 2 outs 2nd baseman Nicky Brown hit a ball sharply under the glove of the 3rd baseman and Simons scored the game winner. The win gave the Pirates their 10th of the season. “Trout was phenomenal tonight, he had his good fastball and a pretty good breaking ball tonight, it’s a shame we didn’t give more run support” said manager Matt Noll. Simons led the Bucs offensively going 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Noll, Kaeztel, and Kozak each had a hit. The Pirates will go on the road to face the Hagerstown Braves. The game will played at North Hagerstown High and game time is 6:00.

June 19, 2009 Tony Magnanelli thew a complete game shutout against the Brunswick Orioles Friday night to collect his second win of the year. Mags scattered 5 hits while striking out 5 and allowing 4 BB's. "We were a little worried about Tony's arm going into tonight's game, but he said he felt good in the bullpen and he threw a heck of a game", said manager and catcher Matt Noll. The game was scoreless until the top of the 5th when catcher Matt Noll was plunked to lead off the inning, center fielder Matt Byers followed with a walk and the shortstop Josh Simons singled to load the bases, left fielder John Holcumb followed with an RBI single to plate Noll; however, Byers was gunned down at the dish for the 1st out of the inning. Brian Collins the belted a 3 run blast to leftfield to make the score 4-0. 1 out later 1st baseman Kyle Kane got things going again with a single to left, 2nd baseman Nicky Brown followed with a single of his own and then DH Nate Himes cleared the bases with a 2 RBI single. The Bucs would add 2 more runs in the top of the 7th innings when Kane would single to plate Collin (HBP to leadoff the inning) and Himes would drive in right fielder Mike Spry (singled earlier in the innning) with a sac fly. June 18, 2009 Craig Henson collected his 1st win as a Boonsboro Pirate Thursday night as the Pirates improved their mark to 8-2. The Myersville Yankees went up 2 nothing in the 1st inning and the score would remain that way until the top of the 3rd inning when the Pirates finally tied the game up at 2. The Pirates would take the lead in the 5th inning when back to back walks to right fielder Mike Spry and Catcher Kyle Kane got things started, DH Nate Himes then single to plate Spry. 1st baseman Matt Noll then pushed a bunt to the right side to plate Kane pushing the lead to 4-2. Flynn Adds Depth to Pirates Outfield
June 15, 2009 The Pirates signed outfielder Tommy Flynn today to add depth and insurance in their outfield; as well as, speed and a left handed stick off the bench. Tommy batted .325 for the Mount while scoring 30 runs and driving in 14 runs, he also added 10 stolen bases.

    Pirates Split in Cumberland
June 14, 2009 The Pirates took Game 1 beating the Cumberland Orioles 9-1. The Pirates got rolling on in the first thanks to 3 Oriole miscues and 3 Boonsboro hits mounted to a 4 run lead for the Bucs. After 3 consecutive errors by Cumberland catcher Nate Himes drove in 2 runs with a single, and 1st baseman Matt Noll followed right behind Himes with a 2 RBI single of his own. With a 4 run lead the Pirates seemed to be in control going into their half of the 1st but with 1 out and 5 pitches into his 2nd start of the year Boonsboro pitcher was removed from the game with discomfort in his throwing arm. Brandon Armentrout strolled out of the dugout to take the ball for the Bucs. Trout would settle inning nicely as he would throw 6.2 innings allowing 1 run unearned and striking out 4while collecting his 2nd win of the week. The Pirates scored runs in 5 of the 7 innings played and rolled to a 9-1 victory. Offensively the Bucs were led by Simons 2-5 with a run and RBI; 2-4 with a run; Himes 2-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI; and Noll 2-4 with 3 RBI. “That’s a good win for us, it’s nice to see the bats come alive”, said manager Matt Noll, “Trout threw the ball really well and was a real shot in the arm for our pitching staff”, he added.

With the pitching staff spread thin this week the buzz in the Boonsboro dugout was who was going to take the mound in game 2. There was no doubt in Brandon Armentrout’s mind as he took the ball again. The Pirates jumped up 1-0 in the 1st inning when 1st baseman Kyle Kane plated Simons (BB) with a double to left. Cumberland would score 2 runs in their half of the 1st only 1 of which was earned; however Armentrout would settle in to the gives the Bucs another great pitching performance. With 2 out Brian Collins saw 12 pitches before drawing the RBI walk and Kane was hit by a pitch to put the Pirates up 4-2. Cumberland would add a run in their half of the 6th. In the 7th Kozak would retire the leadoff hitter before surrendering a double followed by an RBI single. With 1 out a ground ball hit off shortstop Josh Simons glove to plate Cumberland’s 5th run and end the game. “That’s a tough loss to swallow”, said manager Matt Noll. “We get 2 great pitching performances and can’t pull off the sweep is discouraging”, “Armentrout gave us 10 2/3 phenomenal innings and Kozie gave us 3 more on short rest, those 2 are work horses and will be key for us all year”, added Noll. The Pirates will be back in action in Brunswick as they take on the Express. Game time is 6:30.

Pirates Bounce Back to Beat Braves
June 13, 2009 Despite only managing 2 hits for the second day in a row the Boonsboro Pirates were able to beat the Hagerstown Braves 4-2 Saturday. Josh Simons made his 2009 debut for the Pirates and despite not being 100 percent it was a good one. After allowing back to back singles to start the game Simons settled in to get out of the 1st scoreless, Simons ran into more trouble in 2nd inning making that the 2nd straight inning he had escaped bases loaded jams. In the 3rd the Braves would finally get to Simons for 2 runs on back to back doubles by Nathan Minnich and Keith Kellinger. The Pirates wouldn’t retaliate until the bottom of the 5th inning right fielder Brandon Armentrout led and centerfield Matt Byers led the inning off with back to back walks, catcher Matt Noll then bunted into a 1-5 on a sliding play by Braves pitcher Corey Livingood . A good hustle play by Noll allowed him to slide in safely at 2nd base allowing Simons to reach 1st base on what could have been an inning ending double play. With the bases loaded shortstop John Holcumb walked to plate the first Boonsboro run and 3rd baseman Brian Collins tied the game with a sac fly to right to plate Noll. With the game tied at 2 the Pirates would strike again in the 6th inning. Nicky Brown would get things started with a single and that would spell the end for Livingood. Brown advanced to 2nd on a sac bunt by DH Nate Himes, Trout would follow with a walk, before Byers would fly out to the 3rd baseman. With 2 outs catcher Matt Noll took the first pitch he saw and lined it into right to plate Brown. The Pirates would add an insurance run later in the frame when Trout would score on a bases loaded walk to Holcumb. Simons slammed the door on the Braves and collected his first win of the year. After allowing the 2 runs in the 3rd inning Simons went on to throw perfect 1-2-3 innings from the 4th inning on. The final line on Simons 7 innings pitched, 2 runs allowed none earned and 5 K’s. Offensively the Bucs were led by Noll 1-3, RBI, and a run; and Brown 1-3 with a run. “It wasn’t pretty but a win is a win” said Noll. “Simons threw the ball extremely well and was the ace that he’s capable of being every time out and the offense showed up in the right spots”, added Noll. The Pirates travel to Cumberland tomorrow to take on the Cumberland Orioles for 2 games. Game time is 1:00.

    Pirates Streak Snapped at 5
June 12, 2009 The Pirates fell 4-3 to the Express Friday night giving Boonsboro their first loss of the season. The Pirates jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Josh Simons got the game rolling with a leadoff double, Simons advance on a 5-3 off the bat of left fielder John Holcumb, and 2nd baseman Nicky Brown plated Simons with a sac fly to right field. The Pirates would a second run to their lead in the top of the 3rd inning when right fielder Brandon Armentrout led off the inning with a walk, advanced to third on a misplayed ground ball to shortstop off the bat of Simons and Armentrout later scored on another sac fly by Nicky Brown. Steve Kozak started the game on short rest for Boonsboro and was masterful in his 5 innings of work, throwing 5 shutout innings, punching out 5 hitters, and only allowing 3 hits. With a 2 run lead manager Matt Noll would lift Kozak in favor of reliever Kenny Reisinger, who retired the first hitter he faced before running into to trouble, pinch hitter Seth Keyser singled and later scored on a double from Jake Pendergraph; Reisinger would punch out the next batter, before inducing a slow roller back to the pitcher which Reisinger fired into right field allowing Pendergraph to score from 2nd base. With the game knotted at 2, right fielder Brandon Armentrout took the second pitch of the 7th inning and deposited it over the right field wall to give the Bucs the lead. The Pirates went to their closer 6’7” Jimmy Duggan who walked the lead off man, then a bunt attempt turned into a 2 base error put runners on and 3rd with nobody out. Duggan forced a ground ball up the middle that hit shortstop Josh Simons’ glove before going into centerfield to plate the2 express runs, thus ending the game and snapping the Pirates’ 5 game winning streak. The Pirates manager only 2 hits a double from Simons in the 1st inning and the homerun from Trout in the 7th inning. “We didn’t play our best game today by any means but we put ourselves in a situation to win the game” said manager Matt Noll. Noll added “the key to our hot start had been great starting pitching, timely hitting, and solid defense and tonight we got a great start from Koz, but with only 2 hits and 3 errors late in the game I don’t know many teams who can overcome that”. The Pirates take on the Hagerstown Braves tomorrow at 1 o’clock at Boonsboro.

    Pirates Remain Hot
June 10, 2009 The Pirates remain hot as they beat the Brunswick Express 8-4 Wednesday night. The Express got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning off of Boonsboro starter Craig Henson. The score would remain that way until the Pirate would push 8 across in the 4th frame. The Express went to their bullpen in the 4th inning and was the rain began to fall harder it seemed the Express staff had control issues as the Pirates drew 7 walks in the inning and only 2 hits off the bat of leadoff man Josh Simons. Steve Kozak got the win for the Bucs as he bailed Henson out of a jamewith 2 outs in the 3rd inning and went on to work the rest of the game. Final line on Henson 3.2 innings, 2 runs, 3 hits,4, K's, and walks; "it was Craig's first start this year and he had good stuff, but he was a strict pitch count tha twasn't negotiable", said manager Matt Noll. The Pirates were led offensively by shortstop Josh Simons who was 3-4 with 2 RBI and a run score. Brian Collins, Kyle Kane, and John Holcomb each added a hit . The Pirates will play the Express again Friday night at 6:30 at Brunswick High School.

Pirates Continue Winning Ways to Beat O's 13-3
June 8, 2009 The Pirates continued their theme of great pitching, solid defense, and timely hitting Monday night as they rolled over their Blue Ridge nemesis the Brunswick Orioles. The O’s jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when cleanup hitter John Mcdowell drove in left fielder Matt Rankin who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. The Pirates wasted no time getting that run back as shortstop Josh Simons belted the first pitch of the game off the left field fence for a double and John Holcumb followed with a single to right to plate Simons. Brunswick pitcher Stevie Smith then retired 3 and 4 hitters Mike Spry and Brian Collins before walking first baseman Kyle Kane, catcher Nate Himes stayed hot with a 2 RBI double and second baseman Nicky Brown singled to plate Himes to push Boonsboro out to an early 4-1 lead. Brunswick would shrink the deficit in the top of the second inning when solo homeruns off the bat of Andy Taylor and Josh Wenderoth made it a 4-3 game. In the bottom of the second the Pirates would respond with a 5 run inning after number 9 hitter Matt Noll was retired to start the inning Simons got things going with a single, Holcumb followed with his 2nd single of the game, right fielder Mike Spry singled to plate Simons, Holcumb and Spry scored on a misplayed ground ball of the bat of 3rd baseman Brian Collins, and Collins and Kane scored on an E6 off the bat of Nicky Brown. Now with a big lead Boonsboro hurler Brandon Armentrout never looked back as he settled in and never really allowed the mighty Brunswick bats to threaten again as he only allowed 2 base runners in his last 3 innings of work. After a quiet 3rd inning the Boonsboro offense got going again in the bottom of the 4th as they sent 9 men to plate adding 4 runs to their total. After retiring the 1st man of the inning, Smith plunked Collins, Kane and Himes both followed with singles; however, Collins was cut down at the dish on Himes’ hit, Brown and center fielder Matt Byers hit back to back RBI singles before DH Matt Noll cleared the bases with a 2 RBI double down the left field line to extend the lead to 10. The final line on Armentrout 5 innings pitched, 3 earned runs, and 4 K’s, “Trout did a great job tonight, he battled through some tough innings early and once he got the lead he really settled in nicely, we had had three good pitching performances this weekend and Trout followed their lead tonight”, said manager Matt Noll. Offensively the Pirates put up 13 runs on 13 hits. The charge was led by Simons 3-4, 2 runs; Holcumb 2-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI; Spry 1-3, RBI, runs scored; Kane 1-2, 3 runs; Himes 2-3, 2 RBI, 2 runs; Brown 2-3, 2 RBI, a run score; Byers 1-3, RBI, 1 runs, and Noll 1-3, 2 RBI. After a much needed off day tomorrow the Pirates will look to carry their momentum into Wednesday’s home game against the Brunswick Express. Game time is 6:15.

Whitford Throws 2nd No-Hitter as Bucs rout Yankees
June 7, 2009 The Boonsboro pitching staff threw its’ second no-hitter in 2 days as they beat the Myersville Yankees 10-0. Aaron Whitford was the Bucs’ starting pitcher as he tossed 5 no-hit innings for the win. “It’s not everyday you see a no-hitter, let alone 2 in 2 days”, said manager Matt Noll, “Aaron threw to a plan and was very economical only throwing 60 pitches”. Whitford went 5 innings while striking out 5 and only allowing 3 base runners. The Boonsboro offense got things rolling early as leadoff hitter Josh Simons doubled to start the game, left fielder John Holcumb then walked, Simons then advanced to 3rd base on a deep fly ball off the bat of Mike Spry, number 5 hitter Kyle Kane walked after Collins hit into a 1-3 putout, and then DH Nate Himes plated Simons and Holcumb with a 2 out single. The Pirates went back to work in the second frame when Matt Byers led off with a walk, the stole 2nd base, and advanced to 3rd on a Matt Noll ground ball to 2nd base. Josh Simons then walked and quickly stole second, John Holcumb then hit into a 4-3 to plate Simons, the scoring was capped off when right fielder Mike Spry hit a 2 run blast to center field. The Bucs went back to work in the 3rd inning scoring 4 more runs, when Himes tripled to lead off the inning, Nicky Brown was hit by a pitch, Byers singled in Himes, and Matt Noll cleared the bases with a 2 RBI double and later scored on a Josh Simons RBI double. The Pirates would push across their 10th and final run in the bottom of the 5th when left fielder John Holcumb singled in Matt Byers who walked to lead off the inning and advanced to 3rd base on a Steve Kozak double. On the day the Pirates managed 10 runs on 10 hits, 6 of which were for extra bases. Himes led the charge going 2-2 with 2 RBI and a run; Simons also was 2-2 with 2 doubles, an RBI and 2 runs; Spry 1-2 with 2 RBI and a run; Byers 1-1 with an RBI and 3 runs, and Matt Noll 1-2 with 2 RBI and a run scored. The Pirates will go again tomorrow night at home at 6:15 against the Brunswick Orioles.

Magnanelli, Reisinger Combine for No-No: Pirates Sweep Opening Day
June 6, 2009 The Boonsboro Pirates swept their opening day double header against the Hagerstown Braves with stellar pitching performances and timely hitting on Saturday. In game one Boonsboro ace Tony Magnanelli took the ball and was able to over come some first inning wildness to throw 5 innings of no hit baseball. In the top of the 1st inning Magnanelli retired the leadoff hitter, then hit both the number 2 and 3 hitters and then walked the cleanup hitter. Magnanelli escaped the bases loaded 1 out jam un-phased and settled in to throw 5 innings of no hit baseball while striking out 5. In the sixth the Pirates turned the ball over to newcomer Kenny Reisinger who threw 2 perfect innings to shut the door while striking out 1. The Pirates took a 1 run lead in their half of the 2nd inning when 1st baseman Kyle Kane led off with a double and later scored from second when centerfielder Matt Byers managed to stay in a rundown long enough to plate Kane. The Pirates would add an insurance run in the bottom of the 5th inning when right fielders Mike Spry, (a new addition to the Pirates) hustled to score from 2nd base on a misplayed fly ball to left off the bat of (another newcomer) 3rd baseman Brian Collins. Shortstop Josh Simons and Kane led the Bucs offensively each going 1-3, Kane added a run scored as did Spry. Matt Byers reached base in all 3 at bats via base on balls.

The big left hander Steve Kozak got the nod for the Pirates in game 2. After a Hagerstown 1,2,3 1st the Bucs wasted no time getting the Kozak some run support as they sent 8 hitters to the plate in their half of the 1st inning scoring 4 runs. New comer and number 2 hitter John Holcumb got things going when he singled to right and then quickly stole second base, third baseman Brian Collins followed with a walk. Catcher Kyle Kane plated Holcumb on an E6. 2nd baseman Nicky Brown plated Collins with a single and centerfielder Matt Byers capped off the scoring with a 2 RBI single. Boonsboro added another run in the 2nd inning when right fielder Brandon Armentrout led off with a single, and was driven in by a triple off the bat of Brian Collins. In the top of the fifth the Braves would rattle a tiring Kozak and manufacture 3 runs to push the score to 5-3 in Boonsboro’s favor. The Pirates quickly responded with a 3 run fifth inning of their own. Brian Collins singled to get things going, Kane followed with a single, catcher Nate Himes drove in both runners with a triple, and Brown singled in Himes. Kozak would hand the ball over to newcomer Jimmy Duggan who worked the final 2 innings, of the game, striking out 3. The final line on Kozak was 5 innings pitched, 4 hits, 4 K’s and 3 runs allowed. The Pirates tacked on the 9th and final run in the bottom of the 6th when a misplayed ground ball off the bat of Collins plated Simons who doubled earlier in the inning. Nicky Brown was 3-4 with 3 RBI and a run; Collins was 2-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs; Nate Himes and Matt Byers were each 1-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. “I am very happy with today’s outcome, Mags and Kenny threw a no-no in game one, Kozak gives us a quality start in game 2, the offense erupted for 9 runs in game 2, and Duggan shut the door for 6 outs, what more could you want”, said manager Matt Noll. He also added “it was nice to see some of our new players step in, mesh with our veterans, and make instant impacts”. The Pirates are back in action at home as the take on the Myersville Yankees at 1:00.

    Returning Pirates for 2009
13.Matt Noll C/Inf: A Shepherd University graduate, Noll returns as the Pirates manager and hopefully this year will be able to log more innings behind the plate for Pirates this season. Last year Noll played 6 positions for the Pirates; first base, second base, third base, catcher, DH, and even pitched a few innings while posting a team leading .360 batting average and scoring 19 runs which also led the club. Noll also could see more action at first base where he only played 10 innings for the Pirates in 2008.

6.Nate Himes C/Inf: A West Virginia Tech graduate, Himes returns as a member of the coaching staff; as well as, the workhorse for Pirates behind the plate. Nate caught a lot of innings for the Pirates last year and hopefully Noll is able to lighten up his a load a little. Himes also was spotted playing different positions last year as he played second base, third base, right field, and DH'd. Himes posted a .326 average in 2008 and led the team in RBI's with 27 and doubles with 8. Nate also could see considerable action at first base.

8.Nicky Brown Inf: A Shepherd graduate, Brown is the heart and soul of the organization and is slated to return at second base but will see time at Shortstop when Josh Simons takes the mound. Nicky will also serve as an extension of the coaching staff. Brown got off to a slow start in 2008 and was hampered by a leg injury but regained his form just in time for the playoffs. No one Pirate was more clutch than Nicky Brown through out the playoffs and Brown proved that to be true when he extended the Pirates' season in Salisbury delivering the 2 out bases loaded single that beat Perdue in extra innings sending the Pirates to the semi-finals of the Mid-Atlantic Regional. Nicky posted a .280 batting average and added 6 doubles.

3.Josh Simons SS/P: Currently a senior at Shenandoah University and is off to a great start for the Hornets, Simons was probably the Pirates' best player in 2008 and will return as the starting shortstop and will most likely move into the Pirates' rotation. Josh posted a .319 average as was in the top third of every offensive category for the Pirates. On the mound he earned 6 saves while striking out 16 through 13 innings.
**Josh finished another outstanding year for the Hornets hitting .325, while driving in 15 runs, scoring 21 times and going 3 of 4 in stolen base attempts. Josh was equally impressive on the mound going 4-0, with a 4.14 ERA and collected 41 K's through 48 innings pitched.

16.Kyle Kane C/OF/Inf: Currently a sophmore at Mount Saint Mary's where he posted a .331 batting average as a freshman. Kane played all over the field for the Pirates; left field, center field, third base, shortstop, second base, catcher, and he DH'd as well; but is slated to play a split role at first base, catcher and DH with Noll and Himes, but Kyle could also see considerable action in the outfield.. Kyle also is expected to take on a larger role behind the plate, resting the Pirates' two veteran catchers. Kyle's first year swinging wood on a consistant basis was a good one for Pirates in 2008 and they are looking forward to greater things in 2009, where Kyle is expected to hit somewhere in the heart of the order. Kane posted a .272 batting average in 2008.
**Kyle is putting together another impressive season with the Mount as they push to make the playoffs. Kyle it hitting .324 with 5 long balls and 32 RBI, and has crossed the plate 37 times, while adding 6 stolen bases.

1.Matt Byers Of: In 2008 was a key cog in the Hagerstown Community College's run to the JUCO World Series and is currently a junior at Salisbury State University. Byers will return as the Pirates' speedy center fielder where he played lights out defense in 2008. Matty's first year swinging wood was an up and down one but he regained his stroke in Salisbury where he was red hot for the Pirates. The Pirates expect greater things out of Matty in 2009. Byers posted a .233 batting average and led the team in stolen bases.
**Matt has seen limited action in the Sea Gulls crowded outfield but he has made the most of his opporttuniies posting a .300 average while collecting 2 RBI and adding 2 runs scored.

32.Brandon Armentrout P/Util: A Martinsburg, WV native and a currently a senior at Shepherd University will return to the Pirates to once again fill the super utility role. Trout made 9 appearances on the hill in 2008 logging 32 2/3 innings while posting a 4-3 mark with a 2.45 ERA while collecting 27 punchouts. Trout also will see time in the offensive lineup as he did 2008 where he hit .296 and played every position except catcher. Trout's ability to bounce back on short rest on the mound and play a variety of postions well makes him a great asset and weapon for the Pirates.
**As usual Trout has been a dependable utility man for the Rams this season. He has been used st shortstop, third base, second base and the outfield while hitting .333 with 2 homeruns and 5 doubles while driving in 6 runs and crossing home plate 7 times. Trout struggled early on the mound but has bounced back and been a quality pitcher for the Rams down the stretch, logging 26 innings while posting a 6.58 ERA, and collecting 3 wins.

26.Steve Kozak P: A Shepherd graduate will return as the workhorse and ace of the pitching staff. In 2008 Kozie was phenomenal leading the staff with 65 innings pitched and posting an 8-2 record with 1.91 ERA while collecting 40 punchouts. Kozie's durability and determination were no more apparent than when he took the ball in the Regional elimination game against Brunswick's mighty bats after throwing 100 pitches the night before. He held Brunswick at bay for 7 1/3 innings not allowing any runs and only 2 hits.

10.Tony Magnanelli P: A Fairmont University graduate, Mags will return to the Pirates pitching staff where he was lights out all year long in 2008. Tony logged 32 1/13 innings for the Pirates while posting a 3-1 record, .55 ERA, and collecting 33 punchouts. Mags was slowed by some arm problems in the middle of the year but overcame them to dominate game 4 of the BRL semi-finals sending the Pirates to Salisbury and he was equally impressive in Salisbury where he threw 147 pitches into the ninth where he gave up only 3 runs and was the tough luck loser on a mis played ball.

33.Cam Shifler P: Cam had surgery in late 2007 and was not 100 percent for the Pirates in 2008 but still managed to be effective logging 27 innings while posting a record of 3-3-1 and striking out 20. Cam's role this year could increase and he will be expected to come out of the pen; as well, as the occasional starting duties. In 2008 Cam came in relief in game 2 of the BRL semi-finals trailing by 2 runs in the third innings where he shut down the Hagerstown lineup for the remainder of the game and eventually collecting the win.

27.Craig Henson P: A graduate of Mount Saint Mary's Craig will return to the Pirates pitching staff. Craig was very good in 2008 but many times was a victim of bad defensive play. In 2008 Craig made 6 appearance throwing 25 innings while posting a 3.66 ERA and collecting 15 strikeouts. The Pirates are hoping to expand Henson's role in 2009 and have him start; as well as, relieve when necessary.

14.Nate Kaetzel Of: A Boonsboro local will return to the Pirates in 2009. Nate had a good year for the Pirates in 2008 after being away from the game for a few years. He will return as an outfielder but could see some action on the mound or at the hot corner. Nate was the Pirates' best pinch hitter in 2008 and hopefully will remain a weapon off the bench when he's not in the lineup.

    Newcomers for 2009
28.Mike Spry - an outfielder and a next level hitter will instantly improve the middle of the Pirates' lineup. Spry played his college ball at Shepherd University from 2000-2003. In 2003 Spry was awarded with both the WVIAC hitter of the year and player of the year. After college Mike moved on to play Independent ball in the Frontier Leage, where he played for the River City Rascals and the Evansville Otters. "We are very excited about having Mike join our ball club this year. He's a great hitter and I am looking forward to pencilling his name in the middle of our lineup. Not only is Mike a great player but he is a great guy as well. We have Mike slated to play the outfield, but he is very capable of playing any of the four infield spots as well.", says manager Matt Noll.

9.Aaron Whitford - a pitcher from Hedgesville, WV, is currently a junior at Fairmont University. Aaron looks to add depth for the Pirates to an already impressive pitching staff. Whitford will be counted on out of the bullpen; as well as, occasional starting duties. "We know Aaron has been slowed by some injuries recently, but he appears ready to go. Aaron has good stuff and is a great competitor. We think he is a nice addition to our ball club.", says Noll.
**Aaron overcame injuries this year to lead the Falcons with a 2.87 ERA while throwing 31 innings and posting a 3-0 mark and he collected 21 strikeouts.

15.Brian Collins - a third baseman/pitcher from Jefferson High School, Collins is currently a Junior at shepherd University, where he is the the Rams starting third baseman and has seen some innings out of the bullpen. Collins is expected to be the Pirates' starting third baseman and a stopper out of the bullpen. "Brian was a little banged up last year and didn't see much time on the field, but he is a having a fantastic college season and we look forward to having him on our team", says manager Matt Noll. "Brian is another great addition to the middle of our lineup and a solid third baseman," added Noll. Collins is also a versatile player and could see time at first base; as well as, second base.
**Brian is having a monster year as he leads the Rams into their regional tournament. Brian has been an extra base hit machine as he leads the Rams with 16 longballs, 16 doubles, and 2 triples while hitting .385 and driving in 52 runs both also lead the Rams. Brian has been terrific on the mound as well posting a 1.93 ERA over the course of 37 innings while collecting 3 wins and 28 punchouts.

Kenny Reisinger - a pitcher and currently a junior at Shepherd University. The Pirates are very excited about adding Kenny to an already deep pitching staff, Kenny will be counted on to be a stopper for the Pirates whether its early or late in a game. "Kenny has started, he's middle relieved, and he has closed this year for Shepherd and he has done an outstanding job this year and throughout his college career", says Noll. "Kenny has great stuff and we are very excited about adding him to our staff, he knows a lot of the guys already and he fits right in, he's a great pickup for us", added Noll.
**Kenny has had another oustanding year for the Rams as they cruise into the regional tournament. Kenny has predominately been the Rams closer this year but has logged 53 innings while posting an astonishing 1.86 ERA and a 4-2 mark while adding 8 saves.

22.Jon Holcomb - an outfielder/ infielder is currently a junior at Shenandoah University where he plays both the outfield and second base. The Pirates are counting on Jon to mostly play left field but he will see time in the infield when Collins or Simons pitches. "I've seen Jon play and he's a very good player", says manager Matt Noll "he's got a great swing, the addition of Jon gives us a good mix of youth and veterans; as well as, some more athleticism and versatility, we are very excited about the addition.
**Jon had a great season for the power house Hornets as they march into the regional tournament. Jon batted .405 with 26 RBI and 43 runs scored and also went 8-10 in stolen base attempts.

17.Jimmy Duggan - a pitcher from Jefferson, Md, Duggan is currently a senior and the closer at George Washington University. The Pirates will count on Jimmy out of the bullpen and are very excited to be adding him to their pitching staff. "Jimmy is a big tall kid, who plays D1 ball against a lot of good hitters. His stuff is very good and we look forward to calling on him late in games", says manager Matt Noll. "With the addition of Jimmy and utility man Jon Holcomb this frees up Simons and Collins to be able to start more games on the mound which only puts us in a better situation", says Noll.
