Two time state championship coach Donna Cheatham was hired as the NEW (old) Scottsburg Warriorette basketball coach at a school board meeting held earlier this evening. In a 3-1-1 vote, the board agreed to hire Cheatham as an 8th grade science teacher and the varsity girls basketball coach.

Cheatham started the girls basketball program in 1972-73 and in 22 seasons compiled a 379-80 record winning the state championship in 1989.

More on this story later.

I105.3 News Reports Coack Keck Asked to Help Warriorettes
--Tuesday, May 26, 2009

I105.3 Radio news reporter Dan Clark has reported that the Scott County School District 2 School Board has agreed to ask Warrior Coach Brent Keck to assist with the Warriorettes Basketball program until a coach is found. Clark also reported that no potential coaching candidates have been announced.

The Scott County School District 2 administration has been operating without the Superintendent, Rob Hooker, who has been hospitalized on two separate occasions and continues to recover.

The Warriorette coaching vacancy is one of the most watched coaching changes in the state of Indiana. Rumors of candidates that have applied have been buzzing around the area for quite some time. Two candidates have been confirmed by the candidates themself, while another candidate that has been the source of many rumors has not been officially confirmed. Many people in Scottsburg have been hearing rumors and spreading rumors that former Warriorette coach Donna Cheatham has applied for the position. However, WORX radio in Madison recently reported that the Southwestern (Hanover) school administration recently approved a contract extension for Coach Cheathm through 2011.

While most varsity programs are set for next season and have made their summer tournament, camp and workout schedules, Scottsburg is now looking for Coach Keck and others to fulfill that responsibility until a new coach is found. This move does not affect Coach Keck's Warrior coaching job in any way.

It would seem that applicants could still apply for the Warriorette job since the position is not yet filled.
Bill James Inducted Into Hall of Fame
--Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Former Scottsburg Warrior great Bill James was inducted into the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame on Wednesday night. The Hall of Fame banquet was held at the Primo Banquet Hall in Indianapolis, and a capacity crowd was on hand to watch several Hoosier Hoops legends as they were inducted. Several members of the Scottsburg community were on hand for the historic event.

In his acceptance speech, James gave thanks to his wife and family as well as fans from the Scottsburg community. He thanked former Warrior and Hall of Fame member Bill Ritter for his involvement in getting him into the Hall. He especially thanked Coach Jim Barley, also a Hall of Famer, for the "many lessons" that he learned under coach. One of the funnier moments of the induction was the comment made by Hall of Fame president Dr. Phil Eskew, Jr., when he was commenting on Bill's historic 69 point game against West Washington when the Senators only scored 68 points. He paused and looked at Bill and said, "What were you thinking?" Bill's final quote before leaving the podium was, "I stand in the shadows of legends, and I am truly humbled."

Other highlights from the evening:

*Steve Alford gave a great long speech (more on that later) in which the Hoosier legend came to tears at the end.

*Scott Skiles talked about growing up in a small town in Northern Indiana before moving to Plymouth and how his basketball goal in the driveway, which one would picture in their mind when thinking of Hoosier basketball, had a tree on the left side. He could only shoot from the right side in the Summer and many times would practice a 20-footer from the right side to win the state championship. Many of you will remember the shot that Skiles made in the state championship to send the game into overtime... from the right side! Plymouth went on to win the title.

*The 1959 Indianapolis Crispus Attucks state championship team was honored for its 50th anniversary, and the 1984 Warsaw state championship team was also highlighted for its 25th anniversary. A member of the Warsaw team, Steve Hollar, was recognized for his roll as Ray Butcher in the movie Hoosiers. The 1969 Indianapolis Washington Continentals was inducted as a team into the Hall of Fame for their undefeated state title run. The HOF will induct any team that completed an undefeated season while winning the state title.

*The highlight of the evening was the speech by Ted Kitchel when he was being inducted. He pointed out that fellow Hoosier, Steve Alford, wasn't in attendance at the morning reception at the Hall of Fame in New Castle and therefor didn't know about the 90 second rule when giving his acceptance speech. Kitchel said like always, his teammates would have to make up the difference in the time (four former Indiana Hoosiers were inducted - Alford, Kitchel, Steve Bouchie and Wayne Radford). Kitchel's best comments came in regards to class basketball. Kitchel stated that he was glad he grew up in a time when you knew where your sectional was going to be, because "who the hell knows where the sectionals are now?" He later talked about playing for Lewis Cass High School and how they lost in the regional in overtime to Marion on Marion's home court. He said he was glad he could compete against the bigger schools. He again stated he was glad to grow up and play in a time that when you left Hinkle Fieldhouse or Market Square Arena "you knew who the hell the state champion was!"

*Others inducted included Denny Bishop of South Bend Central, Phil Cox - 1972 Mr. Basektball from Connersville, Fred Fleetwood of Southport, Dick Hickox of Fort Wayne North Side, Gregg Popovich of Merrillville, Dolph Pulliam of Gary Roosevelt, Bob Sakel of Jasper, Vaughn Wedeking of Evansville Harrison.

*The Silver Anniversary Team was also honored (those from the class of 1984) and it included Bogdan Cucuz of Lake Central, P.K. Falkenstein of Jeffersonville, Brian Fish of Seymour, Mark Gary of Anderson Highland, Scott Haffner of Noblesville, Jeffrey Harris of Lawrence North, Todd Jarvis of New Castle, Mary Lehmann of Warsaw, Troy Lewis of Anderson, Jeff Moe of Indianapolis Brebuef, Kevin Owens of Floyd Central, Jeffrey Scott Peters of Whitko, Milan Petrovic of Lake Central, Chris Schafer of Princeton, Ed Schilling, Jr of Lebanon, Shelton Tyrone Smith Jr. of Indianapolis Cathedral and Derrick Wesley of South Bend Riley.

*Local radio legend Charlie Jenkins was honored as the St. Vincent Silver Medal Winner.

*Having Jim Barley as a tour guide at the Hall of Fame in New Castle is AWESOME!

Pictured above is Bill James (on the right) standing in front of his Hall of Fame display with his brother Bob James. Bill gave a lot of credit to his brother in his acceptance speech for his role in the "James Gang"

Warriors Lose Chance to Clinch Title with 59-48 Loss to Dragons
Thursday - February 12, 2009

The Scottsburg Warriors bid for another MSC title were put on hold. With a win over Silver Creek, the Warriors could have clinched at least a tie for the MSC title, but the Dragons 59-48 win means the Warriors will need some help to get a piece of the conference championship. The Warriors will now have to rely partly on their county rival, Austin, who will host Brownstown this Saturday. The Braves have just one conference loss, as does Salem. Salem will have two conference games left against Eastern (Pekin) and Charlestown. Salem will be a big favorite in those games, but if both Brownstown & Salem lose, then the Warriors could still tie for the conference title.
