Dear Parents and Wrestlers,

New for this year, the Bulldog Wrestling Club hopes to begin an intermediate team comprised of our most experienced wrestlers from last year and new wrestlers who might be interested in participating at a higher level.  Practices will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6pm to 7:30pm at Churchill High School starting November 16.  Legendary coach John Fitts will be the head coach.

We are excited to begin our 21th season. Our Head Coaches this year are Nick Haines and Mark Parra. Both Nick and Mark wrestled for Bulldog Wrestling Club and Churchill High School They will be assisted by Zach Girod, Steve Hertz, Tom Massie, Steve Cook, and Mark Vendittis The Club Director is Henry Higgins. Click the "Contacts" link to the left for more coach bio info.

Feel free to send me an email if you have any questions and remember all practices are open for you to watch.

Henry Higgins, Club Director

The Bulldog Wrestling Club at Churchill High School began in 1994 as a way to teach kids between the ages of 6 and 14 basic wrestling skills.  Beginners at any of those ages are welcome. We compete in the Maryland Youth Wrestling League which factors in the child's age as well as his or her weight for assignment to one of 27 weight classes. The goal of the Bulldog Wrestling Club is to introduce wrestling to kids in a positive and fun style.  We emphasize that the kids show respect and good sportsmanship both to their teammates and to their opponents. We hope all wrestlers will improve their skills and their fitness, make new friends and enjoy the competition.

We practice on Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at Churchill High School starting November 17th. There is no practice when Montgomery County public schools are closed for holidays or snow days.  The 2016 league competition begins Saturday January 9th with matches held at Walt Whitman High School for six weeks, ending February 14.  Our team will be assigned varying start times of either 1:00 PM or 3:00 PM.  A complete schedule will be posted before the season starts. All wrestlers will have a match every week and all wrestlers are eligible for the league's county wide tournament, which will be held at Whitman February 20.  Top finishers in the county tournament are eligible to enter a four county regional tournament scheduled for February 21.

Our intermediate team comprised of our most experienced wrestlers from last year and new wrestlers will  practices  on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6pm to 7:30pm at Churchill High School starting November 16.  This group will compete in a variety of tournaments on Saturday and Sunday.

All wrestlers must provide their own wrestling shoes both for practice and for the matches.  The wrestling mat always is swabbed down with a disinfectant before use.  There is a firm rule: never wear your street shoes on the mats and never wear your wrestling shoes on the streets. Bring them and change outside the practice room door. For practice, sweat shirts, sweat pants, T-shirts or shorts all work fine.  Avoid baggy clothes because they can get tangled.  Wrestling singlets, a team T-shirt and head gear to protect the ears are provided for the matches and included in your season fee. Wrestlers can wear the headgear at practice if they like.

Our head coach is Mark Para and he is assisted by Nick Haines, Zach Girod, Tom Massie, Steve Hertz, Mark Vendiitis, and Steve Cook. Six of the seven started their wrestling careers on the Bulldog Wrestling Club.  The Club Director is Henry Higgins.

Only the referees at the matches and tournaments are paid.  All the coaches and everyone else involved in running the league is a volunteer.  Each club is assigned responsibility each week for a part of what it takes to hold the matches.  This may mean arriving early to set up the mats, or running the scoring tables, or staying afterwards to put away the mats. The coaches will organize this but we look to the parents to help out.  And don't worry if you aren't familiar with wrestling.  We will teach you anything you need to know before you need to do it. (We are coaches, after all.) And you won't be stuck on  the scoring table when you child is wrestling.
