Cougs fall to BK in 2nd round of 4A District Tournament

BISHOP KELLY 10, CALDWELL 0 (5 inn.): Andy Lawrence and Colby Wade belted two-run homers in the bottom of the fifth for the walk-off, five-inning victory that places Bishop Kelly in Friday’s district title game. Joey Carmona went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Derek Thompson was 3-for-3 with a double for BK (22-2).
Knights starter Bowen Ogata improved to 7-0 on the mound. He gave up one hit through five innings, struck out six batters and walked four.

Caldwell defeats Kuna in 4A District Tournament
CALDWELL 4, KUNA 3: Jordan Britton struck out nine, walked none and held Kuna to three runs on four hits in a complete-game win Monday in the 4A District III tournament. Dylan Sawyer doubled and Andrew Lopez had two of Caldwell’s hits and drove in one run and Austin Van Horne knocked in a run for the Cougars.Landon Croft had a triple and Justin Cavanaugh and Jeffers Erickson each had a double and an RBI for Kuna (11-12). Caldwell plays Bishop Kelly in a winner-to-state game today.

Caldwell shutout by Kuna 2-0

Kuna scored single runs in both the first and seventh innings for the 2-0 win. Jordan Britton once again pitched extremely well surrendering only 3 hits with 9 strikeouts in the losing effort. Laren Walker, Anthony Diaz, Austin Van Horne and Britton all went 1-3 at the plate.

Caldwell scores 2 in the top of the 7th for a 7-6 win over Middleton

Heading into the bottom of the 6th inning the Cougs trailed the Vikings 6-3, but were able to push across 2 runs to make it a 6-5 ball game. Caldwell held Middleton scoreless in their part of the 7th inninng setting up the walk off win. The 7th inning didn't start that well as the lead off batter struck out, but a walk and single by Anthony Diaz and Jordan Britton began to set the table. After another strike out for the 2nd out of the inning, Troy Bunger hit a ball deep into the 6 hole which caused the Viking shortstop to airmail the throw to first, scoring Diaz all the way from 2nd for the tying run. Middleton coach Dias elected to intentionally walk Dylan Sawyer to load the bases. On a 1-2 pitch to Tim Storms that ended up being in the dirt for a wild pitch, Jordan Britton scampered home with the game winning run.

The Cougs rallied in the top of the 6th scoring 4 runs to get within 3, but weren't able to add any additional runs in the 7th inning in the 7-4 loss to the Hawks. Anthony Diaz went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double.

Caldwell scored six runs in the top of the sixth to erase a 5-0 deficit.
Caldwell’s Dylan Sawyer went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and starter Jordan Britton had nine strikeouts and three walks.
Chase Packard went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Columbia (7-5 overall, 5-5 4A SIC) Caldwell (8-7 overall, 4-6 4A SIC).

On a night where the Cougs were limited to a single hit, they were unable to push any runs across in the shutout loss. They did have some opportunites to score by having runners on base via walk or hit by pitch but couldn't get that timely hit to bring anyone in. Alex Orozco had the lone hit in the 2nd inning with Laren Walker taking the loss on the mound.

Sophomore Jordan Britton set the tone as he threw 3 hitless innings to begin the game and only surrendered 2 hits total with 8 strikeouts in the complete game 5 inning win. On offense the team collected 12 hits with Laren Walker going four-for-four, Troy Bunger hitting two doubles and Dylan Sawyer going two-for-four at the plate.

After Nampa jumped ahead by a score of 8 to 1, Caldwell rallied scoring 3 times in the 5th and 6th innings to close within a run. Anthony Diaz led off the 7th with a base hit, and was advanced to second by a Dane Hillesland sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Austin Van Horne singled through the infield into left field. Anthony Diaz tried scoring from second base but was thrown out at the plate for the 3rd and final out of the game.

Kuna wins by 1 over the Cougs

In another close contest dominated by pitching the Cougars lose to the Kavemen by a score of 3 to 2. Laren Walker pitched a strong 5+ innings striking out 10 while Christian Bautista came on in relief in the 6th. Offensively, Dylan Sawyer (triple), Walker, Anthony Diaz, Brandon Dobson and Carson Woolery all went 1-3 at the plate with Sawyer collecting the lone RBI.

Kuna’s Landon Croft tied the game on an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, driving in Cody Cardoza, then Matt McLean scored on a passed ball, giving the Kavemen the lead. Hayden Stauffer earned the complete-game win on the mound for Kuna (4-0). Stauffer struck out six and walked none. Laren Walker struck out 10 Kuna batters before being pulled in the sixth inning, but was charged with the loss. (Idaho Press Tribune)

In a back and forth game Caldwell scored 2 runs in the top of the 7th for the 8-7 win. Dylan Doan picked up the win in relief of Jordan Britton. Britton collected 7 strikeouts during his 6 innings pitched. The offensive attack was led by the 2 hits and 5 RBIs of Laren Walker along with 2 doubles from Carson Woolery. Walker and Dylan Sawyer each tripled in the game and Anthony Diaz provided 2 RBIs.

Caldwell wins in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the 7th. In a pitching duel, Caldwell prevailed with Dane Hillesland throwing 6 innings, giving up 1 earned run and striking out 4 while sophomore Jordan Britton came on in the 7th inning and earned the victory for the Cougs. Caldwell out hit the Hawks 8 to 4 with Dylan Sawyer collecting 3 hits and Hillesland helping himself out with 2 hits also. Sawyer tripled in the 7th, then Skyview walked Laren Walker, with 2 outs in the inning the Hawks botched a 1st and 3rd pickoff attempt and Sawyer stole home with the game winning run.

Cougs fall in first game of the season to Bishop Kelly
Outside of a 4 run 1st inning from BK, Caldwell played Bishop Kelly even for the rest of the game in losing 5-1. The Coug's pitching by Andrew Lopez and Dane Hillesland only allowed 4 BK hits and gave the team a chance to win. Offensively, Caldwell was led by Anthony Diaz's two hits and RBI.
Caldwell plays the Wildcats from Columbia tonight at 4:30 at the CHS Baseball Complex.
