  • CALHOUN CRUSHES ROME 34-7 IN SCRIMMAGE!!!

Jackets not shaken by early deficit, come back to teach Cats lesson!!!
August 28, 2011
By Rick Winters, Calhoun Times

Calhoun struggled to contain Dalton running back Tre Beck early on, and he made the Yellow Jackets pay with two touchdowns in the first quarter.

On the first scoring drive, Beck broke out runs of 35 and 20 yards, the latter going to the end zone for six points. Julio Mora connected on the point after to give the Catamounts a 7-0 lead with 4:55 left in the quarter.

Beck’s second touchdown came two minutes later on a five-yard run. The play was set up by a 15-yard quarterback sneak from Cole Calfee.

Dalton’s defense was just as good as their offense in the quarter and they kept quarterback Taylor Lamb and running back Darius Washington from mounting any threats.

Calhoun’s first close opportunity didn’t come until midway through the second quarter when Washington was able to break loose for runs of 15 and 10 yards. The drive pushed closer to the redzone but the Yellow Jackets faced a 4th-and-5 play from 27 yards out. Lamb connected on a 10-yard pass to receiver Ben Lamb but the play was called back do to illegal formation.

Backed up to the 37 yard line, Calhoun decided to attempt the field goal and brought out special teams phenom and Alabama commit Adam Griffin. However, Griffin’s 42-yard attempt was cut short at the line when Dalton’s Robert Hardaway sacrificed his body for the block.

The Jackets were able to prevent any more damage from Dalton on the Catamounts next possession. Calhoun’s passing game started to heat up near the end of the quarter which resulted in a 5-yard TD run from Washington near the end of the half.

Taylor Lamb started off the drive with five consecutive complete passes. The series included an 11-yard shot to Clay Johnson, a 17-yard pass to Washington, and a 28-yard bomb to Josh Barnes. Washington then took three shots at the end zone, scoring on the final opportunity. Griffin connected on the PAT with just seconds remaining to cut the Dalton lead to 14-7.

Dalton took a knee to the the quarter and send the game into halftime.

Calhoun’s offense kept rolling in the third quarter as Taylor Lamb hit Barnes for 15 yards, Ben Lamb for 18 yards, and Chase Rierson for 10 yards. Washington ran the ball for and additional 15 yards. However the drive stalled inside the redzone forcing the Jackets to settle for a field goal. Griffin connected from 24-yards out and Dalton’s lead shrunk to 14-10 with 7:03 remaining in the quarter.

The Jackets did suffer a set back on the drive when Washington had to leave the playing field after rolling his ankle. He had rushed 13 times for 76 yards up to that point. He would be used sparingly for the third and reenter for good in the fourth.

The loss did not slow the Calhoun offense too much as the Jackets took their first lead of the game with 9:02 left in the fourth quarter. Bunched up the middle, Calhoun showing run, decided to pass, and the trick worked as a wide open Alex Kirby came down with the ball for a five yard TD reception. The play was set up by a 49-yard pass from Taylor Lamb to Johnson. The point after was good and the Jackets took a 17-14 lead.

Dalton took the ball to midfield on their next possession, and with just six minutes on the clock, elected to go for a fake punt on fourth down. The trick play failed, and the Jackets took over on downs.

A few plays later. the Jackets sealed the victory with 1:49 remaining when Washington carried the ball in from one yard out. Griffin hit the PAT for a 24-14 Calhoun lead.

The Yellow Jackets will take on Armuchee High School next Friday night at Armuchee

CALHOUN TO START SEASON AGAISNT RIVAL DALTON!!!
August 23, 2011
By Rick winters, Calhoun Times

Another football season gets underway for Calhoun later this week which can only mean one thing, the annual rivalry match against the Catamounts to the north.

Dalton has struggled as of late as the program rebuilds under coach Matt Land and the Yellow Jackets will go into Friday’s game looking for their third straight victory.

Despite a rebuilding process, Calhoun coach Hal Lamb knows that the Catamount team is still one very dangerous animal to contend with.

“I am always impressed with Dalton and they are very well coached,” Lamb said. “This year is no different.”

Last season Calhoun traveled to Dalton and struggled out of the gate, falling 14-3 before scoring 24 straight points for for 27-14 victory.

This year the Catamounts will come to Calhoun for a battle on the turf at Phil Reeve Stadium.

Dalton brings familiar weapons on offense, led by running back Tre Beck (No. 24).

“He is the one that makes them go,” said Lamb. “He has some tremendous speed and has a great ability to make people miss.”

Lamb believes it will take a complete team effort just to slow Beck down.

Beck along with quarterback Cole Calfee (No. 12) will lead Dalton out of the Multiple-I Formation.

“Calfee is a lot better than he was at this time last year,” said Lamb. “He is doing a good job of running the offense.”

Other offensive threats for the Catamounts include receiver Tre Bonds (No. 11), fullback Matt Cobb (No. 32) and tight end Will Erwin (No. 83).

Defensively Dalton has a very sound team that Lamb credits with always being in the right spot at the right time.

“I know they lost a lot on that side of the ball but they had some kids that played extremely well and hard in the scrimmage,” Lamb added.

Particular standouts include linebacker Robert Hardaway (No. 40) and defensive back Dante’ Thomas (No. 23).

Dalton is not the only team to have gone through a lot of changes recently. Calhoun will enter Friday’s game with an offense led by a new quarterback and running back.

Taking over the helm is Hal’s nephew Taylor Lamb.

Taylor, a two year backup QB for a school in South Carolina, played well in the scrimmage against Rome two weeks ago.

“Taylor is a very poised guy that doesn’t make a lot of mistakes,” said Lamb. “He is learning the offense more and more each day and I expect him to have a good game.”

Darius Washington, who Lamb said is probably the strongest player on the team, will carry much of the offensive load at running back.

“Darius is going to be our go-to guy,” said Lamb. “He has waited his turn and this kid is a tremendous football player that will surprise people with his speed, strength and agility.”

Also helping to lead the offense will be a strong core of receivers including Ben Lamb, Chase Rierson and Clay Johnson. Tyler King will lead the front line at center.

Defensively the Jackets enter this season looking to fill a few holes up front. Lamb was happy with what he got from some of the new guys during the scrimmage.

The line will be backed up by perhaps one of the best group of linemen in the area led by Hunter Knight and Alex Kirby.

“They are going to carry the load for us,” said Lamb. “They play hard and make special plays leading our defense.”

Dalton finished the 2010 season with a record of 7-3 and were 4-1 in the region. Calhoun went 14-1 for the second year in a row with the lone loss coming to Buford in the Championship Game at the Dome.

Calhoun has won three out of the last four meetings with Dalton.

“This is a fun, clean rivalry with a great atmosphere,” said Lamb. “Matt is a great guy and a great football coach and does a tremendous job building character with his guys.”
