CANNONIERI COMPETES WITH TOP TEAMS IN REGION AT FC DELCO TOURNAMENT
The Cannonieri competed for the first time with the 11 v 11 format in Memorial Day tournament. Although playing several close games, the Cannonieri left the tournament without a win but with lots of experience to build on. During the first match with Hulmeville Hotshots, the teams were tied with 30 seconds remaining with the Hotshots were able to convert a corner kick to the game winning goal. The second game pitted the Cannonieri against the Arsenal Dynamite, although scoring first and ending the half tied, the talented Dynamite team took control of the game and scored four goals in the second half to win 5-1. The final game on Sunday, the Cannonieri came out with more determination and after 3/4 of scoreless play, the Top Hat 16 team from Atlanta converted on a scramble in front of the goal that put the game away.
CANNONIERI PLAYERS GEAR UP FOR SPRING 2009 WAGS SEASON WITH EARLY TOURNAMENT PLAY
The Cannonieri players have had an excellent winter break and pre-season tournament schedule. The team traveled to Richmond early in March for the Kickers Invitational, and then again a few weeks later for the showcase Jefferson Cup. At Jefferson Cup, the Cannonieri competed in the Premier Orange 8v8 Division, along with Foothills SC (#1 in PA) and Red Storm (#3 in MD). The Cannonieri went 2-1-0, accumulating 10 GF and only 3 GA, losing to the eventual Division Champion Foothills SC in a highly contested 2-0 semi-final match. To close the spring 2009 tournament pre-season, the team particpated in the FPYC Liberty Cup Invitational, playing up in age group in the U12G Premier Division. Despite poor weather, at the end of the first day of match play, the Cannonieri had earned two wins in two matches, with victories against the U12G Lionville SC Shock 5-0 and Alexandria Thunder 3-1. Unfortunately, tournament play was discontinued due to sloppy and wet fields, so the team was unable to advance through the bracket. However, these two victories against U12 teams, as well as the two last weekend at Jefferson Cup, showed excellent development and progress since early March when the team reconvened after its winter break.
Our tournament season will continue when we defend our age group Premier Division Title at the FC Delco Players Cup, May 23-25.

These two wins gave the players momentum going into the 3rd match against the speedy Century United (PAW) in which the Cannonieri earned a 4-0 win and a spot in the Championship.
