CARDINALS WIN 2009 ED RALL CHAMPIONSHIP
August 24, 2009
The Cardinals played in the Ed Rall tournament held by SYAG this past weekend in Ronkonkoma. The Cardinals opened up against a tough Nesconset Panthers team on Saturday at Rayner Beach Park. The Cards called on Nick V. to start and get the team off to a good start. Like all year, Nick did just that pitching a complete game walking only 2 and striking out 5 Panthers. Offensively the Cardinals were paced by Anthony S.,Tyler P.,Matthew B., and Joe H. all collected 2 hits each with 2 RBI's apiece. The Cardinals took the 1st game 12-3.
In the 2nd game the Cardinals took on the Plainview Hawks. Needing a win would assure the Cards a playoff spot on Sunday. The boys started quickly by scoring 5 runs in the 1st inning. Offensively the Cardinals were lead by Matthew B., Joe M., and Dan D. who all collected key hits that helped the Cardinals take the lead. Tyler P. took the hill and was very good going 5 strong innings allowing 2 runs while walking 3 and striking out 4 Hawks... The Cardinals continued to push the lead to 10-2 which was aided by run scoring doubles by Nick V., Matthew B., and Connor P. Jake S., and Anthony S. had run scoring singles that put the game away for good and insured the Cardinals a playoff spot on Sunday...
Sunday brought a semi-final game against the Ronkonkoma Cardinals(red team). Steven S. was called on to pitch us to the finals and like all year Steven delivered by going the distance walking 2 and striking out 5 Cardinals. Offensively the Cardinals were lead by Tyler P.,Dan D., Jake S., and Steven S. who delivered run scoring singles. The Cardinals were up 9-2 through 5 innings and Steven took the ball in the top of the 6th getting them in order to get the Cardinals to their 3rd straight final in as many tournaments...
The final was against a very tough hard hitting SYAG Brave team. The Cardinals started Matthew B. and the Braves started Joey L. the makings of a great game, and that's what all the fans got. Matthew B. kept the Braves off the board in the top of the 1st inning. The Cardinals came to bat in the bottom and were able to get a run from Nick V.s walk and a stolen base and a miscue by the Brave shortstop on Matthew B's ground ball. With the score 1-0 Matthew started having control problems giving up some walks allowing the Braves to get even in the top of the 2nd inning. The Cardinals were held scoreless in the bottom of the 2nd keeping the score tied at 1-1. The Braves were patient against Matthew who struggled a bit, and the Braves capitalized on that scoring 3 runs giving them a 4-1 lead. Connor P. helped keeping the score there by making an outstanding catch in right field which would have cleared the bases. The Cardinals were held in check by The Braves tough lefty through most of the game. Nick V. came on in relief of Matthew and kept the score 4-1 going into the bottom of the 6th inning. With the Cards down to their last 3 outs and trailing by 3 runs we needed a miracle. After the Braves pitcher got the first 2 outs of the inning the Cardinals were down to their last out. Matthew B. came up and stroked a single to leftfield keeping the Cards alive. Steven S. blooped a ball into short leftfield causing the shortstop and leftfielder to collide and dislodging the ball from the shortstop and keeping the Cards alive. Tyler P. stepped to the plate in search of any way on. Tyler fought off several pitches pushing the count to 3-2 with 2 outs. Our miracle was just about to happen!! Tyler hit the next pitch over the centerfield fence getting the Cardinals tied in the bottom of the 6th inning. The Cardinals were back in it and had life on that blast off of Tyler's bat. After getting the final out of the inning the Braves and Cardinals went to extra innings in search of the Champion! Tyler P. came on for Nick and got the Braves in order in the top of the 7th. The Cardinals now came to bat in hoping of getting 1 run for the win. The 1st 2 Cardinals went down in order until Connor P. stepped to the plate and hit a 2-2 fastball down the leftfield line for a double. Jake S. then stepped up to the plate and hit a hard ground ball to shortstop, with Connor running the ball glanced off the Brave shortstop's glove and rolled into left field giving Connor a chance to score. The leftfielder came up firing and Connor beat the tag and gave the Cardinals the Championship...
The Coaching staff, parents, families, and friends want to thank the SYAG Braves for the great tournament that they held. A special thanks to Dave and Brian and all the parents who are truly a class act from top to bottom...
CARDINALS CAPTURE MID-ATLANTIC CROWN
THE CARDINALS PLAYED IN THE MID-ATLANTIC TOURNAMENT AT BASEBALL HEAVEN THIS PAST WEEKEND. THE CARDS OPENED UP AGAINST THE MLI PHANTOMS ON FRIDAY NIGHT BANGING OUT 14 HITS AND GETTING STELLAR PITCHING FROM NICK V., MATTHEW B., AND JAKE S. THE CARDS PLAYED EXCEPTIONAL DEFENSE AND THAT CARRIED THEM TO AN 11-4 VICTORY.
GAME 2 BROUGHT A HARD HITTING SMITHTOWN TEAM THAT WAS VERY GOOD DEFENSIVELY. CARDS HAD TYLER P. ON THE HILL WHO STRUGGLED A LITTLE BIT WITH HIS CONTROL, BUT AS ALWAYS TYLER GAVE EVERYTHING HE HAD AND KEPT THE CARDINALS IN IT. WITH THE CARDINALS TRAILING 4-2 IN THE BOTTOM OF THE 4TH, JAKE S. STROKED A LINE DRIVE UP THE GAP SCORING JOE M. AND JOEY H. TO TIE THE SCORE. STEVEN S. CAME ON IN RELIEF FOR TYLER AND CLOSED THE DOOR ON SMITHTOWN THE REST OF THE WAY. THE CARDS WERE ABLE TO GET THE WINNING RUN IN THE BOTTOM OF THE 5TH INNING WITH A DOUBLE BY NICK V. AND A SINGLE BY MATTHEW B. THE CARDS WERE NOW 2-0 HEADING INTO A GAME WITH ELITE BASEBALL.
THE CARDS CALLED ON MATTHEW B. WHO TOOK THE BALL AND WAS DOMINATING. ELITE HAD TROUBLE CATCHING UP TO MATTHEW'S FASTBALL. MATTHEW WENT THE DISTANCE ALLOWING TWO RUNS WITH 4KS. OFFENSIVELY, THE BOYS WERE WORKING ON ALL CYLINDERS COLLECTING 11 HITS AND SCORING 12 RUNS. THE CARDS WERE ABLE TO SCORE IN EVERY INNING. MATTHEW B., NICK V., AND JOEY H. HAD 2 HITS EACH. THE GAME WAS CALLED AFTER 4 INNINGS BY THE RUN RULE. THIS GAME WAS HIGHLIGHTED BY JOEY HALLICK'S LONG 3 RUN HOME RUN OVER THE LEFT FIELD FENCE GIVING THE CARDINALS A 12-2 VICTORY.
GAME 4 IN POOL PLAY THE CARDS HAD TO TAKE ON THE ELMJACK ALLSTARS FROM QUEENS WHO WERE A VERY GOOD TEAM. THE CARDS CALLED ON ANTHONY S. WHO TOOK THE HILL IN HOPES OF GOING UNDEFEATED IN POOL PLAY. ANTHONY THREW VERY GOOD, BUT SOME DEFENSIVE MISTAKES GAVE THE ELMJACKS A 7-0 LEAD BEFORE WE KNEW IT. THE BOYS KNEW THEY COULD COME BACK AND THAT THEY DID. DEFENSIVELY, THE CARDS TIGHTENED THEIR BELTS AND HELD THE ELMJACKS TO NO MORE RUNS THE REST OF THE WAY. WITH THE CARDS TRAILING 7-1 WE MADE OUR MOVE WITH HARD SINGLES BY TYLER P., JOE M., AND JOEY H. DANNY D. THEN HIT ONE OFF THE BASE OF THE WALL SCORING JOEY H. AND JOE M. CARDS WERE INCHING CLOSER. STEVEN S. WAS CALLED ON AND DID A GREAT JOB KEEPING THE CARDINALS IN THE GAME. STEVEN PITCHED 3 1/3 INNINGS STRIKING OUT 4 AND WALKING NOBODY. WITH THE CARDS TRAILING 7-3 GOING INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE 6TH INNING, THE BOYS RESPONDED WITH DOUBLES FROM ANTHONY S., AND DANNY D. GETTING THE CARDS TO 7-5. WITH ANTHONY S. ON 2ND, NICK V. REACHED ON AN ERROR AND THEN STOLE SECOND BASE SETTING UP THE STAGE FOR MATTHEW B., WHO ROPED THE GAME WINNING SINGLE TO CENTERFIELD GIVING AN AMAZING 8-7 COME FROM BEHIND VICTORY.
THE CARDS CAME BACK ON MONDAY TO TAKE ON THE MASSAPEQUA YANKEES IN THE SEMIS. THE CARDS CALLED ON NICK V. TO PITCH US INTO THE FINALS. NICK HAS BEEN A GREAT ADDITION TO AN ALREADY STRONG PITCHING STAFF. HE WAS DOMINATING FOR THE FIRST 3 INNINGS GIVING UP 0 HITS AND 0 RUNS. OFFENSIVELY, THE CARDS WERE ABLE TO JUMP OUT TO A 6-0 LEAD. TYLER P., JOEY H. AND DANNY D. CONTINUED TO GET HITS WHEN THE CARDINALS NEEDED THEM. WITH THE CARDS LEADING BY 6, THE COACHING STAFF PULLED NICK V. FROM THE GAME AND SAVED HIM FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. MATTHEW B. CAME ON AND SHUT DOWN THE YANKEES GOING THE REST OF THE WAY WHILE STRIKING OUT 4 AND ALLOWING ONLY 1 RUN. THE CARDINALS WENT ON TO THE 8-1 VICTORY PUTTING THEM IN THE FINALS.
THE NEW YORK GREYS STOOD IN THE CARDS WAY OF A CHAMPIONSHIP. THE GREYS CAME IN WITH AN UNBEATEN STREAK IN TOURNAMENT PLAY OF 3 YEARS. THEY HAD SAVED THEIR BEST PITCHER FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WHO WAS A HARD THROWING RIGHTHANDER FROM PUERTO RICO. THE CARDS COUNTERED WITH NICK V. WHO WAS DOMINATING ALL YEAR. THE CARDS WERE NOT TO BE DENIED - THE BOYS RACED OUT TO A 4-0 LEAD IN THE 1ST INNING. RUN SCORING SINGLES BY MATTHEW B., STEVEN S., AND A DOUBLE BY TYLER P. GAVE THE CARDS THE EARLY LEAD. THAT'S ALL NICK V. WOULD NEED. NICK KEPT THE HARD HITTING GREYS OFF THE BOARD WITH HIS ARRAY OF PITCHES AND HIS DOMINATING FASTBALL. THE GREYS MANAGED A MERE 2 HITS AGAINST NICK.
