Lumberjacks Place 2nd in MSFL Tournament Final, Lose 3-0
The Central Fairbank Lumberjacks took part in the 4th Annual MSFL Tournament last weekend, and finished the weekend by losing in the finals to North York Knights and ace pitcher Tracey Woolridge. Woolridge was impressive on the mound, stiking out 10 Lumberjacks on the way to a one-hit victory for the Knights, who play in the Golden Horseshoe Fastball League.
The Jacks opened up Saturday morning against the Rangers, winning 11-3. Next up should have been East End Tap but since they decided not to play some ball (or pay) all their games were default wins (7-0). Our last game against Milliken was rained out on Saturday and thus was rescheduled for 8am Sunday (yay). The Jacks were up 3-2 going into the final couple innings when the fastball gods (and Jacks errors) turned the tables; bloopers, flares - you name it the Milliken guys did it. We ended up losing something like 9-2.
The Jacks caught a break with East End Tap not being there, so were seeded #2 in the division, which meant a cross-over quarter-final game with division C - which happened to be the MSFL's Athletics. It was a pretty tough game in the first few innings until the Jacks bats awoke, scoring at will. Final score something like 10-2.
Next up was the feisty Glen Williams Ale Stars, who in their quarter-final game, had upset the MSFL's Sox in the bottom of the 7th inning, winning the game 5-4 after being down 4-1 going into the inning. Whatever magic the Ale Stars had in that game was not available to them in the semi-final. The Jacks started early in the 1st and never looked back, winning the game 15-0 on a combined 2 hitter by Havervold and Smith.
The finals were now set (North York downed Milliken 1-0 earlier) with the Lumberjacks against the North York Knights. The Jacks put up a great fight, but were overpowered by Woolridge. Some costly errors also made a difference - only one run being earned. Congrats to the Knights and congrats to the Lumberjacks, who have had 2 hard-luck 2nd place finishes in the past month.
Great tourney guys!
Jacks Record Stands at 11-4-1
The Central Fairbank Lumberjacks' MSFL record now stands at 11-4-1, good for 3rd in the league behind the Royals and the Sox.
The Jacks won last night vs. the Coasters 12-2 and now prepare for the MSFL 2008 Tournament this weekend, July 12 and 13 at Dunton Athletic Fields.
The Jacks are in a tough pool, with the Rangers, Milliken, and East End Tap. Our schedule: 11am vs. Rangers 3pm vs. East End Tap 7pm vs. Milliken
Hope to see you all out for the festivities, BBQ, Beer Tent, and some 50/50 draws (proceeds go to A Cure For Breast Cancer).
Derek Havervold has done something most pitchers can only dream about - pitching a perfect game!!! A perfect game is both a reflection of the pitcher's talent as well as overall team defense.
Derek threw the PG against the Glen Williams Ale Stars, winning 4-0.
Havervold: 7IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 10K
Congratulations Derek!!!
Hillsburgh 2008 Tournament Results
June 18, 2008
**Note: the whereabouts of the actual stats for these games are unknown to me. As soon as I find them, I will put them up**
The Central Fairbank LumberJacks competed in the Hillsburgh Tournament on June 14, playing the full 5 games but coming up short in the final. The Jacks would eventually lose 2-1 in the final against a tough rival squad, and current MSFL leaders, the Sox.
The Jacks easily beat Kitchener and Erin in their first two games, and were tied for 1st place in the division along with Arthur. The Merchants played a tough game, but some timely hitting from the LumberJacks would be too much. The Jacks were able to hold on for the win to claim top seed in the division.
Next up was the 2nd place team in the other division, Maryhill. Bobby Lewis pitched a strong game but some unfortunate fielding miscues made the Maryhill squad look better than they should have. It would prove to be a non-factor in the end, with some more timely hitting from the Orange.
The Jacks would meet the Sox in the final, with Smith pitching for the LumberJacks and Big Glen for the Sox. Not much happening either way for either team, thanks to some phenomenal defensive plays from both squads, that is until a monstrous shot from Glen Dorrington captured the lead for the Sox. The Jacks would scrap their way back and tie it at 1 thanks to some great hitting by Jelani Wright.
Then a bunch of weird things happened and Kenny was stealing home. Tough way to go but the lads played some good ball, hitting 9 homeruns over 5 games. Thanks to Al Leighton and Bobby Lewis of the Rangers for helping us out on Saturday. Al had some hits and dingers, and caught some excellent games. Bobby was a workhorse on the mound, winning both games he pitched. Thanks dudes.
Thanks to Hillsburgh and Congrats to the Sox.
Like I said, when i find some real stats, I'll put highlights up.
Jacks Down Chiefs, Win 10-2
The LumberJacks improved their MSFL season record to 6-3-1, after winning 10-2 against the Chiefs Monday evening.
The Jacks bats were largely silent for the first 4 innings or so, having tied the score at two on a 2-RBI double by Adam Smith in the 3rd. However, the bats wouldn't stay silent for long as Smith got it rolling in the top of the 6th with a leadoff homerun. The onslaught would continue in the 7th, as the Jacks scored 8 runs in the final two innings to put down the Chiefs 10-2.
Kyle Scott had a great game against his former club, going 3-4 with 3 RBI. Smith: 1-2, HR (3), 3 RBI Jelani Wright: 2-4, HR (1)
Smith: 7IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 9K
The LumberJacks are at Norton Park, 7PM on Wednesday to face the 1st place Sox. Should be a good game, hope to see you there!
