The 14 Under won the first ever Liberty Basketball Championship in dramatic fashion. For most of the first half, they were down by 10 points. Once they started pressing full court, the lead quickly dwindled. By half time it was almost even. In the second half, there defense took over. Chris Lewis had 3 key steals that lead to 2 lay up and 1 3 point play. They took advantage of the Blackhawks mistakes. Leading the way for the 14's was Shiheem Spencer and Chris Lewis. Isaiah Gonzales and Shavoy Murray made a lot of key plays rather it was scoring or setting their team mates up. Shavoy did alot of his scoring early to help keep up in the game, Isaiah made the dagger when he hit the 3 and then came down on the next play and found Kevin Williams under the basket for a lay up. Saladuheem and Kelly played solid defense and made the Blackhawks work for their baskets. Renz came in the game and made his mark early on a fast break lay up and a couple key steals when the Blackhawks was trying to get back in the game. Congrats fellows
The 8 Under lost 2 close games last week. First they lost in the Liberty Conference championship to the Oaklane Wildcats. Then they lost to Rhawnhurst Raider in the quarter finals of the City Wide Tournament. Both games were good games but the City Wide game vs Rhawnhurst was the most dramatic. Rhawnhurst had a comfortable 9 point lead with 5 minutes left then the Chargers woke up. Carl Jefferson score on a lay up off a rebound to cut the lead to 7. Then we stop Rhawnhurst and Kwand had a nice dribble drive to the basket, highlighted by the cross over that he put on his defender and finished with a lay up. Next time down we got a steal and Kwand again capped off the series with a 3 pointer. The score is now 15-17 with 1 minute left. That was the closest we would get, because of some untimely turnovers we ran out of time. Great job guys.
Click on left picture to read the article about the Frankford Charger's Dehaven Brown. Dehaven lead the team with 16 points as they beat visiting Bartram 70-62 creating a 4 way tie for 2nd place. He also had 5 boards and 2 steals. Dehaven had 3 ankle breaking plays, on one occassion he made his defender (pre season public league MVP) fall. Picture evidence to your right. Video highlights will be posted soon from the game.
