Hurricanes BATTER Rebels in Finale....
June 25, 2007
The Chicos Hurricanes got up off the mat Saturday and rallied to win the 1st annual Hurricane Invitational by "Double Dipping" the Rebels. After suffering a defeat on Friday at the hands of the Roche/Litigators, Chicos battled there way through the losers bracket by defeating Crossroad Cuts, Roche/Litigators, and First Congregational to set up the showdown with the nemesis Rebels. The Hurricanes bats came to life as they defeated the Rebels forcing the "IF" game. Greg Fowler was the winning pitcher in the opener as he held the Rebels to just 5 runs, most of which scored via walks and wild pitches. Ryan Enright and Billy Bowman led the offensive attack and Al Frey also hit well for the Canes. In the nightcap, the Rebels jumped out to a very quick lead and were seemingly in control until the Hurricane bats came out of nowhere and they could not be stopped. The big blow of the game came when Todd Kulling hit a grand slam to tie the game. Ryan Enright blasted 2 homers and also hit for the cycle in the game. Matt Michaluk, Billy Bowman, and Al Frey also went deep in the victory. Frey came on in relief and held the Rebel attack to get the win. Fowler, who is a slingshot pitcher following the state tournament rule, showed why teams don't want no part of him in league play. "Why would teams want to give him the opportunity?" asked manager Chuck Ouellette, "I would have LOVED the opportunity to VOTE on the pitching rule about 4 years ago when these guys were throwing Matt Curtiss and Steve Mathers at us and we had to counter with Mark Stein or Jim Tucker, Greg would be the league MVP if he were allowed to throw." "It's nice to see the shoe on the other foot and they don't like it" Ouellette was referring to Brian Larsen who contacted Rick Jakacki to complain that the pitching rule was changed during the tournament. He also contacted Terry Ruff the league commissioner who had nothing to do with the tournament to vent his teams frustration. "When you give up 27 runs, at what point do you give the other team credit? When do they step up and say they lost to the better team? Ouellette said" "They beat us early in the week, why? Because they were the better team, can they beat us with Greg Fowler or Al Frey slinging? I think we answered the question over the weekend." The Hurricanes return to action tonight with a double header with the Roche and the Litigators.
Hurricane Bats Silenced in Loss
June 13, 2007
The Hurricanes started the night just like they wanted to against the Secory Flyers, the problem is, the start only lasted 2 innings. After jumping out to a 6 run lead, the Hurricanes put there bats in the bag and took the rest of the night off. The proven Flyers made the most of Hurricane mistakes and stole a 10-6 victory at Pine Grove Park Wednesday night. Todd Kulling, Ryan Enright and Brian Chicone all pitched in with 2 hits apiece, and veteran Al Frey kept the Hurricanes in the game and gave them a great chance to win. But in the end, there were to many mistakes. Manager Chuck Ouellette who saw his team slip to 2-2 in the league was disappointed in the loss, "we have to be prepared to play, bottom line." We got off to a terrific start and for some odd reason just went to sleep." "Our base running was terrible, our bunt defense was terrible, our pitch selection was terrible, and good teams don't do the stuff that we do sometimes. "We have a rock solid softball team, and if we play to our capabilities and play smart, we will win alot more games than we lose." "if we play like we did tonight, we will lose alot more than we win." He was pleased with the effort of Kulling who had a single and a triple, in the loss. Todd Kulling is a difference maker. He makes our team better, but at the same time, we have to still be who we are. We have to get the job done and our guys have to step up and deliver in clutch situations. This league race will be a good one, there is not one dominant team in the league as we have seen over the last couple of games. We just have to regain our composure and come ready to play on Monday night against the Creekers. Said game starts at 8:45 Monday.
Hurricanes Rebound for Victory
June 6, 2007
After a highly dissapointing effort on Monday night, the Chico's Hurricanes seemed to get back on track Wednesday night when they defeated the Falcon's 12-8. The Hurricanes jumped out early scoring 6 runs in the bottom half of the first inning when they sent 11 men to the plate. The game was never close from there, as Al Frey returned to the Hurricanes after pulling a Roger Clemens type retirement and held the Falcons to just 5 runs over 6 innings. The Hurricanes were led by youngster George Moss who had 3 hits and drove in 2, Ryan Enright also had a big game going 3 for 4 and driving in 3. Jeff Blum also contributed with 3 hits. The key point to the game according to manager Chuck Ouellette came in the very first inning. The Falcons had men at first and third with 2 outs and potent power hitter Jim Swick coming up to bat. "We were certainly not going to let Jim Swick beat us, flat out, He played with us last year and we know what he is capable of. I know it was only the first inning, but our confidence level could not take a 3-0 deficit early, especially after Monday night's game." So Swick was intentionally walked and Frey got Keith Crane to pop out to end the mini threat. The Falcons played tough throughout and former Hurricane short stop Dave Cox had a spectacular game on the field and in the batter's box. Cox made 3 great plays at short and had a single 2 triples and a 3 run homer to lead the Falcons. Cox ended the night with 4 rbi's. But it was to little to late for the Falcons who saw there league worst record fall to 0-4, while the Hurricanes improve to 2-1. Chico's will now battle with perrenial league power Secory's next Wednesday night at 8:45. Ouellette said it's time for a test. "We need to have our guys committed to winning, from the guys on the bench to the guys in the game. I as a manager can't worry about guys that aren't playing, everyone on my team gets a chance to perform, and this will continue, if guys have a problem with how things are being done, then I will gladly release them from there contract and they can go and bitch on someone else's team. There is not 1 single player on this team that is above anyone. If you don't want to be a part of our team, than we don't need you."
