Week #10: Seven TD Passes Lifts Knights
Knights thrash Eagles 53-20
The Century Knights struck first blood with a TD on their opening drive. It was the first game in which the Knights scored on an opening drive all season. That TD was a 5 yard pass from Ryan Throndset to C.J. O'Brien. FSK tied the game at 7 before the Knights scored 33 unanswered points. The night was full of records for the Knights.
Brandon Soderstrom became the
MVAL Record
holder for the
most receptions in a season with 59
, breaking Jalen Gee's (Frederick) record of 58 set just last year(2009). In addition, Ryan Throndset set a
MVAL Record ,
and tied a
MARYLAND STATE RECORD
with
7 TD passes in a single game
, breaking Kevin Clancy's (Westminster) MVAL record of 6 TD passes set back in 2005 and tying Billy Cosh's (Arundel High School/Kansas State) state record of 7 TD passes.
What was even more extrordinary, was the fact that those 7 TD passes were caught by 7 different receivers. Ryan threw a 5 yard TD pass to C.J. O'Brien, a 14 yard TD pass to Kevin Mcguire, a 54 yard TD pass to Joey Trombetta, an 88 yard TD pass to Jeff Kimble, a 17 yard TD pass to Brandon Soderstrom, and a 15 yard TD pass to Matt Sweeney. Tyrice Rock added to the scoring with a 15 yard TD run in the 4th quarter. In all 8 Knights found the endzone! So the Knights end their season with a 53-20 win over FSK and a 6-4 overall record. They tie Walkersville with that 6-4 record. However, Walkersville has more "bonus" points, and thus Walkersville get the nod for the 4th, and last, playoff spot. Congrats to the Knights for their 3rd winning season overall, and 3rd straight winning season in Knight's history. We are all very proud of you!!!!!
Week #9: "Wheels come off"...........Knights lose 42-13 to Owls
Westminster pulls away
The Knights had everything to play for in Week #9. Both the players and the coaches will tell you that they had a good week of practice and that they were as ready as they were going to be. The game began with the Owls striking first, but missing the extra point. The Knights answered righ back, with Throndset hitting Maguire in the endzone for Kevin's first TD of the season. Kimble converted the extra point, and the Knights led 7-6. That would be as good as it got, as for the rest of the game, if it could go wrong, it did. The Owls scored about every way you could imagine.......blown coverage, getting behind the defender, returning the opening kickoff of the 2nd half, blocking a punt in the endzone, and intercepting a pass bouncing off of the hands/chest of a Knight and right into the waiting hands of an Owl. All in all, it was just a bad day at the office for the Knights. It just seemed as though a Knight's victory was not meant to be. While the Knights playoff hopes are all but gone, they sit at 5-4 and have the opportunity to end the season with only the 3rd winning season in Knight's history. See you next week at FSK. Go Knights!!! We are proud of you!!!!!
Week #8: Knights air it out again for 3rd straight win, and 4 out of the last 5!
Knights rally past Panthers
It was a slow start for the Knights at North Carroll. After falling behind 6 - 0, and 14 - 6, the Knights pulled within 14 - 12 by halftime. The 2nd half would be a different story. The Knights opened up the 2nd half in a spread offense, moving the ball at will. The first drive used up 5 mintes, but stalled without a score. Meanwhile the Knights defense refused to allow another point and the offense opened things up, shredding the Panthers defense for 2 scores resulting in a 28 - 14 victory.
Week #7: Knights Air it out
Throndset finds several receivers in win over Lions
The Liberty Lions, after receiving a forfeit win from Catoctin, came into Knight territory looking to steal a win and stay in the playoff hunt. The Knights would have none of that, and instead knotched a 28 - 6 win, resulting with the Knights having a winning record for the first time this season at 4-3. Playoff hopes were heightened when it was learned that the Rockville Rams (who were 4th in the 2A West Region in the MPSSAA standings before the night began) lost 28-16 to Northern High School putting the Rams at 5-2. The top 4 teams in the region make the playoffs................Next up: North Carroll
Week #6: Century Stuffs Winters Mill
Knights Stuff Jones
On a perfect night for football, the Knights reminded everyone that until unthroned, they are still the Carroll County Champions. The Knights were convincing in their 28 - 13 victory over the Falcons, but it took a while for both teams to "get in the flow". Winters Mill scored first on a run by Mike Jones. Winters Mill RB, Mike Jones, came into the game as the county's leading rusher with 730 yards, but was held to 61 yards for the game (a minus 2 yards for the 2nd half). On Century's side of the ball Joey Trombetta ran for 103 yards and a TD, while Ryan Throndset threw TD strikes to Jeff Kimble (29 yards) and Brandon Soderstrom (13 yards). Brandon Soderstrom also returned a punt 43 yards for a score. The win puts the Knights at 3-3 (2-1 in the county) and aspirations for a 3rd straight playof berth. Next up: Liberty
Week #5: South Carroll excapes Century with a win
Cavs slip by the Knights
South Carroll came into this game, 5-0, with an average margin of victory of almost 40 points. Through their first 4 games, South Carroll was averaging almost 45 points per game while giving up an average of 6.5 point per contest. This Friday night game would be a different story. Century got on the board first with a 42 yard TD pass from the county's leading passer, Ryan Throndset, to the county's leading wideout, Brandon Soderstrom for a 6-0 lead. Then, late in the 2nd quarter, Ryan hit Brandon in stride for a 74 yard TD. However, back around the 50 yard line laid a late-thrown flag, nullifying the TD. South Carroll then scored before the half to go up 7 - 6. South Carroll scored on their first possession of the 2nd half, and the wind appeared to have been taken out of the Knight's sails. Then, with about 2 minutes left in the game, Ryan drove the Knights down the field, hitting Jeff Kimble with a 5 yard strike in the back of the end zone with just over a minute left in the game. With Jeff's extra point conversion, the Knights were within 8. The onside kick was successful and the Knights took over at mid-field. Ryan drove the Knights to the Cavalier's 28 yard line, but time expired sending South Carroll home with a narrow 21-13 win.
Week #4: Century squeaks by Manchester Valley to even their record at 2-2
Century squeaks by for 2nd win of the season
The Knights were "flat" on a warm Friday night evening against a hungry Manchester Valley team looking for their 1st County win in team history. Manchester struck first, in the 1st quarter for a 7-0 lead. Century composed itself and seemed in control going into the 4th quarter with a 21 - 7 lead. Manchester Valley scored on 2 TD passes late in the 4th quarter to tie the score at 21. On the last drive of the game, Century started its' drive on their own 23 yard line, marching down to the Manchester Valley 1 yard line, only to be stuffed at the line of scrimmage as time expired. Century scored on the first play of OT, and converted their extra point. Manchester Valley responded, scoring on their first offensive play of overtime, however the Knights blocked the extra point attempt for the win (28-27). It wasn't pretty, but it was a win. The Knights now prepare to play the high-soaring South Carroll Cavaliers who are 4-0 on the season.
Week #3: Knight lose a hard fought battle to TJ, 20 - 7
Weather conditions played a role in this game as it rained pretty much the entire contest. Knight fans, nonetheless were there to cheer on their Century Knights. The Knights jumped out in front, in this game with, with a 17 yard TD pass from Ryan Throndset to Brandon Soderstrom, late in the 2nd quarter. The conversion kick, by Jeff Kimble, was good, and Century led 7 - 0. TJ came right back with a long TD run, but failed to convert the extra point (Century - 7 TJ - 6). With about 2 minutes left in the half, TJ forces Century to punt, and connects with a long TD pass to go up 12 - 7 at the half. No team scored in the 3rd quarter, as both defenses played well, making it difficult for either offense to move the ball in the continual rainfall. With about 5 minutes to go in the game, TJ put the game away with another long TD run. Final score: TJ - 20 Century - 7. This was a hard fought battle of which the Knights have nothing to hang their heads about. TJ had scored 56 points in the season opener against North Hagerstown. The Knight's defense, for the most part, held the high-powered TJ offense in check. TJ is an excellent football program. The prior week, TJ lost to the #2 team in the state of West Virginia 11 - 7. The Knights now get ready to prepare themselves for their county schedule. See you at Manchester!!!!

Observations and Analysis:
A heartbreaking loss: Tuscarora lost to Century, 35-34, in overtime, which is hard enough to take. But they have no one to blame but themselves. Tuscarora held a 28-6 lead entering the fourth quarter. They proceeded to surrender three touchdown passes and two 2-point conversions in the final 12 minutes, allowing Century to tie the game at 28.
"Josh Bordner reincarnated": That's the way CarrollCountyvarsity.com described Century quarterback Ryan Throndset after he completed 20 of 28 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns in the last 1.5 quarters last week against Tuscarora.
