    Wildcats finally get first period scoring, cruise to 15-2 win over Goose Creek Gators

    February 6th, 2010




    Columbia scored early & often to cruise to a 15-2 victory over Goose Creek on February 5th at the Carolina Ice Palace in Charleston. Columbia was led by Ryan Rowe scored his first 3 high school goals, Alex Tanner had 2 goals, 4 assists and Jack McMenamin had 2 goals, 3 assists. Wildcats Matt Kostreba, Jack Doran & Brenton Norton each had 2 goals, wih Josh Speed & Jayden Haggerty each adding a goal. Spencer Morris had 3 assists in the game as well.

    Columbia lead 7-0 after the first period (2 goals each in the period for Jack McMenamin & Ryan Rowe, with Josh Speed, Jayden Haggerty & Matt Kostreba getting 1 each). Columbia outshot the Gators 22-3 for the period.

    Matt Kostreba opened the second period with his second goal of the game, then Brenton Norton, Jack Doran (twice) & Alex Tanner adding goals as well. A defense lapse lead the Gators to capitalize & break the shutout late in the second. Columbia lead 12-1 after 2 periods.

    Ryan Rowe finished his hat trick to open the third period, and after the Gators scored to make it 13-2, Brenton Norton & Alex Tanner each added their second goals of the game to close out the scoring.

    Mitch Cronin stopped 12 shots for the victory. Columbia's next game is Friday, February 12th vs Greenville North G-Force at 9:15pm at the Plex.


    Wildcats again struggle early, then explode for a 7-2 victory over BE/PG

    January 23rd, 2010




    In a pattern seen over the past few games, Columbia struggled early, unleashed a quick offensive burst, then cruised to a victory, this time over the BE/PG Coyotes 7-2 at the Plex on January 22nd. The Wildcats offense only had 4 shots in the opening period, then exploded for 4 second period goals, and added 3 more in the first 2 minutes of the third period. Seven different Columbia players scored goals in the game.

    After a scoreless first period, Jack McMenamin scored a powerplay goal to open the scoring. A defense lapse allowed BE/PG to tie the score a minute later. Nate Cote scored 2 minutes after that to give the Wildcats the lead for good. Alex Tanner & Robert Siddall added goals in the period & Columbia lead 4-1 after 2.

    Tip Frank, Spencer Morris & Josh Speed scored goals in the first 2 minutes of the third period to widen the gap to 7-1. Then Columbia got sloppy & took 5 third period penalties, during which BE/PG scored a goal to close out the scoring at 7-2.


    Mitch Cronin stopped 19 shots for the victory. Columbia's next game is Friday, February 5th at Charleston vs Goose Creek.


    Wildcats struggle early, pull away late for a 6-2 victory over Summerville

    Columbia Wildcats opened the second half of the SCSHA season with a 6-2 victory over the Summerville Green Wave. Robert Siddall & Tip Frank scored 2 goals a piece, with Jayden Haggerty & Alex Tanner adding a goal each. Jack McMenamin & Jayden Haggerty each had 2 assists, with Chandler Cronin, Spencer Morris, Josh Speed, Ryan Rowe and Tip Frank each having an assist as well.

    Columbia opened the scoring with just 18 seconds left in the first period, as Robert Siddall scored on a setup from Jack McMenamin & Tip Frank. Columbia outshot Summerville 16-8 for the period.

    Summerville scored 2 goals in the second period to take a 2-1 lead with just over 5 minutes left. However, Tip Frank scored at 3:47 of period, then Jayden Haggerty added a shorthanded goal with an impossible angle shot from the corner with just 1 second left in the period.

    Jayden's goal sparked the Wildcats, as they added 3 more in the third, outshooting the Green Wave 16-5 in the period. Robert Siddall had the first goal, on a rebound shot from Chandler Cronin. Alex Tanner also scored on a rebound in front of the net, off a shot from Jayden Haggerty & assist to Jack McMenamin. Tip Frank finished the scoring, off an assist from Ryan Rowe.

    Mitch Cronin stopped 20 shots for the victory. Columbia's next game is Friday, January 22nd vs Private School Rebels at 9:30pm at the Plex.


    Wildcats rally falls short vs Fusion

    December 22,2009




    Columbia Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season, 5-3 to the Lexington Fusion at the Plex on December 22nd in front of a packed house. Although controlling the ice for most of the game, Columbia was unable to get open shots and wasted a number of powerplays, including 2 5 on 3's.

    Lexington scored 3 goals in the first period with Matt Kostreba providing the lone Wildcat goal. Lexington widened the lead to 4-1 in the second period, and stretched the lead to 5-1 on a penalty shot. Columbia then added 2 powerplay goals, one each for Jack McMenamin & Wil Painter. Columbia missed several scoring opportunities late in the game.

    Mitch Cronin stopped 15 shots in the loss. Columbia resumes play on January 8th at the Plex vs the Summerville Green Wave.


    Wildcats take down Florence in shootout

    December 15,2009




    Columbia Wildcats defeated the Florence Predators 3-2 in a shootout on December 11th at the Florence Civic Center. Jack McMenamin & Robert Siddall had first period goals as the Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period. Matt Kostreba assisted on one goal, and Josh Speed assisted on the other goal.

    Florence rallied for 1 goal each in the final two periods to tie the game at 2-2 at the end of regulation. Columbia outshot Florence 29-17, but most of the shot differential was in the first period (10-2).

    In the shootout, Columbia's Robert Siddall and Matt Kostreba had goals giving the Wildcats the victory. Mitch Cronin stopped 15 shots for the victory. Columbia's next game is Friday, December 18th vs Lexington at 9:30pm at the Plex.


    Wildcats lose to Fort in shootout

    December 7,2009




    The Columbia Wildcats dropped their home opener in a shootout loss 3-2 to the Fort Dorchester Patriots on December 4th at the Plex. Wildcats' Captain Jack McMenamin scored both goals for the Wildcats and Mitch Cronin stopped 37 of 39 shots in the game. The Wildcats were outshot 39 to 14 for the game.

    Columbia took the game's first lead on a goal by Jack McMenamin (assist to Nate Cote) half way through the first period. After that the Wildcats went flat. Fort Dorchester scored 2 goals in the final 3 1/2 minutes to lead 2-1 at the end of the first.

    The Patriots continued to control the game for all of the second & most of the third period, outshooting the Wildcats 12 to 4 in the second period and 16-4 in the third period. However, Mitch Cronin steered aside of the Patriot shots for the final 30 minutes. Finally, with under 3 minutes to go in the game and the Wildcats on a powerplay, Tip Frank set up Jack McMenamin and the game was tied after regulation.

    In the shootout, Columbia went scoreless and the Patriots scored twice, giving Fort Dorchester the shootout victory. With the shootout loss, Columbia is credited with a tie. Columbia's next game is Friday, December 11th vs Florence at 8pm at the Florence Civic Center.


    Wildcats overtake Greenville South in Shootout

    The Columbia Wildcats traveled to Greenville on November 20th and took home a 5-4 shootout victory over the Greenville South G-Force. It was the first ever regular season shootout in the league's history. Jack McMenamin & Matt Kostreba scored goals in the shootout and Mitch Cronin stopped 4 of 5 Greenville attempts in the shootout session. (Matt's goal was amazing, I hope someone has it on tape).

    Columbia opened the scoring early in the first period on a powerplay goal by Matt Kostreba, setup by Ryan Siddall. Greenville answered back on goal defected in by a Columbia defender to close out the period at 1 a piece.

    Robert Siddall gave Columbia a 2-1 lead early in the second period on an unassisted goal. Greenville, however scored 3 straight goals before Wil Painter (assists to Genna Wyrick & Nate Cote) responded to close the gap to 4-3 after 2 periods.

    Columbia swarmed the Greenville net during the 3rd period, outshooting Greenville 25-4, but was only able to tie the score with a powerplay goal by Nate Cote (assists to Jack McMenamin & Kevin Gjetley). This lead to the tiebreaker rules for the league this season (previously the game would end in a tie, but this year a shootout was implemented).

    Mitch Cronin stopped 19 of 23 shots for the victory, not counting the 4 of 5 saves in the shootout. Columbia's next game is Friday, December 4th at the Plex vs Fort Dorchester.


    Wildcats open season with a 10-4 win over Wando

    November 15,2009




    The Columbia Wildcats opened the 2009-10 SCSHA season with a 10-4 victory over the Wando Warriors on November 13th at Charleston. Columbia was led by Robert Siddall's 4 goals & 2 assists, and Ryan Siddall with 1 goal & 3 assists. Matt Kostreba contributed 2 goals, Jack McMenamin added a goal & 2 assists,newcomer Nate Cote had a goal & assist and Josh Speed had a goal. Genna Wyrick, Jayden Haggerty and Alex Tanner each tallied an assist in the game.

    Columbia led 2-1 after the first period, with Nate Cote scoring in the first minute of the game on a setup from Jack McMenamin. After Wando tied it at 1-1, Robert Siddall scored his first of 4 goals to close out the period.

    Columbia opened up the game with 4 more goals in the second period. Matt Kostreba made it 3-1 early in the period. After Wando closed the gap to 3-2 on a powerplay goal, Jack McMenamin answered with a Columbia powerplay goal. Robert Siddall scored 2 goals in the final 4 minutes of the period & Columbia led 6-2 after 2 periods.

    Wando scored seconds into the third period to get within 6-3 before Robert Siddall scored his 4th goal of the game. After Wando scored to make it 7-4, Matt Kostreba answered back to extend the lead to 8-4. Ryan Siddall and Josh Speed scored for Columbia to complete the scoring.

    Mitch Cronin stopped 25 of 29 shots for the victory, including several key saves during two Wando 5-3 powerplays. Columbia's next game is Friday, November 20th at Greenville.


    Parents meeting Sunday during practice (12:45pm at Plex

    The Columbia Wildcats will have a parents meeting on Sunday, November 1 at the Plex during the team practice.


    New league schedule issued for 2009-10 season

    The High School league recently issued a new "final" schedule. There are several significant changes in the schedule for the Wildcats. Make sure to check the new schedule on the website.


    Wildcats preparations for the upcoming 2009-10 season

    The 2009-10 SCSHA season will soon be upon us. The Columbia Wildcats will enter into the season with coaches Brian Bauman & Ryan Petz. Evaluations are scheduled to start on Tuesday, October 20th at 8:45pm at the Plex Rink in Irmo.
