2012 CYO Championships
CYO Basketball finals were held at St. Mary's Academy on Thursday, February 23. A packed and excited crowd was on hand to cheer the four teams who made it to the big show.
St. Jane Frances (N. Hollywood), the overall #1 seed, took on upstart St. Raphael’s (South LA) in the title match. The game was hotly contested from the tip off as girls from both squads battled for the ball in playing stellar defense. The scoring was low for the first several minutes until St. Jane Frances began to pull away.
With an aggressive full court press, SJF forced turnovers and took advantage of unforced errors as well as demonstrating outstanding ball control and shot making. After taking a large lead into halftime, St. Jane Frances had to hold off St. Raphael's who fought back to close the gap, but it was not enough to stop a dominant and determined St. Jane Frances team.
As the final horn blew, St. Jane Frances had secured the victory to claim their third consecutive CYO Girls Basketball Championship.
In the consolation game, Holy Trinity (San Pedro) met Corpus Christi (Palisades), two teams that impressively advanced deep into the playoffs. Holy Trinity had more gas in their tank after both teams fought through the bracket and claimed the third place trophy.
Congratulations to all four teams on their accomplishments this season.
