American Martyrs, St Joseph Power to the Championship

On Saturday afternoon at St Mary's Academy in Inglewood, the Final 4 in the 2009 CYO Playoffs for girls volleyball took place.  The first match featured long time westside rivals American Martyrs of Manhattan Beach and St Paul the Apostle of Westwood.  Both teams showed off their volleyball skills but American Martyrs played a notch above  throughout the two games of the match to beat St Paul.  The second match was between St Joseph of Long Beach and Holy Family of South Pasadena playing in front of their loud and positive cheering sections.  St Joseph played more consistently in winning the match over Holy Family in two games.  Sunday November 8 is the conclusion of girls volleyball season with the 3rd Place game scheduled for 1 pm and the Championship game scheduled to follow.  Both matches will take place at St Mary's Academy.

Can the St Joseph squad find one more victory in them to capture the CYO Crown?  Answer on Sunday afternoon.

CYO PLAYOFFS - GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Last weekend, 62 schools began competition for the 2009 CYO Girls Volleyball championship and the four top seeded schools remain as we enter Final Four weekend this Saturday and Sunday at St Mary's Academy in Inglewood.  During elite 8 action last night at Providence High School in Burbank, American Martyrs defeated St Cornelius in two games, winning the first game easily but having to come from behind in the second game.  In the second match at Providence, St Paul the Apostle defeated St Jerome in a stirring comeback.  Having already lost game 1, St Paul fell behind in game 2 23 to 15 but scored the last ten points and then won easily in game 3.  As LaSalle High School in South Pasadena, St Joseph of Long Beach needed three exciting games to eliminate St Lawrence Martyr.  In the second match at LaSalle, Holy Family and St Thomas the Apostle had two close intense games with Holy Family winning the first 29 to 27 and winning the second game 25 to 23.  American Martyrs will play St Paul the Apostle at 1 pm on Saturday afternoon and that match will be followed by St Joseph of Long Beach and Holy Family.  The winners will play for the championship on Sunday at 2 pm while the 3rd place game will be at 1 pm on Sunday.
