Third Annual Pockets & Sockets Tournament To Benefit Michael Stolzenberg

On Saturday, May 11, 2013, the Delray Beach Athletic Club will host the 3rd Annual “Pockets & Sockets” lacrosse tournament at the Seacrest Soccer & Lacrosse fields. Over 50 area lacrosse teams are scheduled to participate. The tournament benefits the Michael Stolzenberg Rehabilitative Trust. Thirteen-year-old Michael is a quadrilateral amputee resulting from a life-threatening bacterial infection contracted in 2008 at the age of 8. Despite having endured the loss of all four limbs, Michael has continued to play lacrosse, attend school independently, snow ski, and text on his cellphone.

The “Pockets & Sockets” event generates funds to assist with the high costs of prosthetics that are categorized as "not medically necessary" by medical insurance companies. Michael outgrows his prosthetics each year. This tournament has raised a total of $80,000 over the past 2 years.

Michael has recently appeared on the news with a new mission. He and his brother Harris have embarked on a quest to raise one million dollars to assist the victims of the recent Boston Marathon bombing who have also endured the loss of limbs, known as MikeysRun.com. Harris will be running the 2014 Boston Marathon as a tribute to his little brother’s determination to help others. They have already generated over $55,000 toward their goal. A special thanks to Champion Sports, Dick’s Sporting Goods & Enterprise Rent a Car for their roles in making this tournament a success.

This will be our first week of practices. Remember this will be a "different" week as there will be no practices on Wednesday due to the Delray Riptide Lacrosse end of season event.

 

Monday, May 6th - U11 team, U13 Lime & U13 Purple practice in Delray @ 6:30

Tuesday, May 7th - U15 team, Boys HS Lime team, Boys HS Purple team, Boys HS White team and ALL Girls teams practice in Delray @ 6:30

Wednesday, May 8th - NO PRACTICE

Thursday, May 9th - All teams practice in Delray @ 6:30

 

Please bring your Florida Elite registration fee with you on Monday or Tuesday to practice and bring the attached waiver you will need to complete for the Pockets&Sockets tournament this weekend.

 

Please make sure you wear your purple Florida Elite reversible to each practice and bring all of your equipment (including a mouthpiece) as well as some water along with you. If you did not get a reversible at tryouts, we should have them to give out tomorrow (UPS delivering in the am supposedly).

Field is located at Merritt Park  316 SW 2nd Ave in Delray.   3 blocks South of Atlantic Ave between SW 2nd and SW 3rd Ave.     I-95 to Atlantic Ave  East.   Turn Right on Swinton Ave.  Turn Right on SW 3rd Street.  Turn Left on SW 2nd Ave.  Parking is along the sides of the fields and in small parking lots on each side.
