Week J Game set for 6pm Thursday JUNE 2nd at Scotch Plains
Looking for all to play our season finale

5/18/11
Week J is up in the air. Will let you know when SPF sets a time and date.  Hearts, Carteret and Scotch Plains all tied for 1st now but SPF has a game advantage on the other two teams atop the table.

Coach Mark's game summary from May 15. . ..

May 15th Hearts versus Somerset Hills

Hannah scored on a blast from the left wing 5 minutes into the first half.  Hearts up 1-0.
Somerset tied the score on a one timer off a Hearts goal kick that went far post over Alexa’s head.  Game tied 1-1.
At the 20 minute mark, Sarah Que crossed the ball.  Krishna sped forward from the left wing and one timed the ball for a left footed goal from 8 yards out.
The half ended 2 to 1 Hearts.

Somerset spent 10 minutes with the ball on the Hearts defensive end.  Somerset took several shots within the 18 yard line and with 20 minutes into the 2nd half Somerset tied the score on a shot was unreachable.  Score tied 2-2.
It was a day when the Hearts played with only two subs.  We played better in the first half and got tired in the second half.  We would have liked to win, but managed a tie an away game with only two subs.

Our WEEK J game will be played ON A WEEKNIGHT when I return. It will be AT SCOTCH PLAINS FANWOOD.

SUNBURST TOURNAMENT June 4th and 5th

Today's 2-2 game vs Somerset Hills clinches  Hearts a winning season. We are tied for first place as of now with Scotch Plains Fanwood but they have only reported 7 games to our nine.  We are tentatively scheduled to play our final game AT SPF on THURSDAY EVENING MAY 26th at 6:30 or 7:00 PM

On Wednesday 18th May you will be joined by a player for the Sky Blue FC team, Alyssa Mautz. Please make the girls aware that Alyssa will be joining them at practice and ask them to come prepared with one item to be signed and a question to ask.

Many thanks

HEARTS 1  Scotch Plains-Fanwood Blue Tigers 1

This was a closely contested game between the 1st and 2nd place teams in our Flight. Hearts cannot finish with a losing record, but SPF maintains their one point lead with a game in hand. The visiting team led 1-0 at the half, but since Hearts always plays better in the second half, things were looking up. Hannah tied the score with a goal off a pass from Krishna. The defense strongly challenged the the Tigers' attack, and Alexa made a number of strong saves. We try to get 20 shots a game, but that aspect of the match ended as evenly as the score, 16-16.

I will be away for work for two weeks. Mary Pahlow has agreed to be at practice Wednesday the 11th and Dave Crance will be there on the 18th but if anyone can also stay, that would be appreciated.

WHITE SHIRTS/BLUE SOCKS

ARRIVE BY 11 AM AT THE LATEST. KATIE WILL BE AT THIS GAME.

SPF is one point ahead of us with one game in hand. We need to keep our home winning streak intact to keep pace!

A reminder again that if we are in 2nd or 4th place as of Sunday night, this will be Hearts’ last home game this season. Our 10th game will be AT the 1st or 3rd place team’s field.

We will play AT Somerset Hills 11:30 AM Sunday MAY 15th. BLUE SHIRTS/WHITE SOCKS

PRACTICE WEDNESDAY 6:00 PM at HOOVER WITH KATIE. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT PRACTICE AND AN IMPORTANT GAME. WE ARE CURRENTLY IN FIRST PLACE BUT THE TEAMS IN 2ND AND 3RD HAVE PLAYED FEWER MATCHES.

JUST A REMINDER AGAIN, OWING TO THE TEN TEAM FLIGHT, SUNDAY MAY BE OUR LAST HOME GAME. WHITE SHIRTS BLUE SOCKS THIS SUNDAY 5/8/2011.

I WILL BE AWAY FOR WORK AND, AS PREVIOUSLY INDICATED, AN ADULT MUST BE AT PRACTICE ON MAY 11TH AND MAY 18TH. Dave Crance has volunteered but his work schedule may not allow him to come. You don’t need to participate, just be there on the sidelines and make sure afterward that all the girls get picked up. Thank you for volunteering an hour and a half to ensure we can practice.

We will NOT play the weekend of May 21-22. We will play our final regular season game on a weeknight, probably either a Wednesday or a Thursday.  If that game is for first place, I hope everyone will show up. We are playing Sunburst June 4th and 5th. Our season will be over June 6th.  35 days left.

----------------------------------------------
HEARTS 4 Cranford United 1

Apparently Cranford's motto is "If you can't beat them, beat them up."  The referee seemed oblivious to the home team's attempted mugging of the Hearts' offensive players (not to mention a few blatant offsides) in the first half yesterday. AC turned an ankle and was unable to return after one hard tackle;  still, Edison led 1-0 at the half on when Hannah put in a pass from Kelly. After the intermission, Hearts stepped up the pressure, playing most of the second half all over Cranford deep in their end. Nidhi scored on a cross from Sarah Q and when Vishaili drilled in a rebound less than 50 seconds later, making it 3-0 the home team was effectively beaten. Sam S scored off Hannah's cross to extend Hearts' lead to 4-0 as Edison repeated their four-goal effort in Friday night's "friendly."  Alexa (who had to stop a couple breakaways that the Backs thought resulted from offsides in the first half) lost her shutout with three minutes to go when the ball caromed off a Hearts defender and Cranford's striker put it in the back of the net for a meaningless tally.
A great deal of credit goes to the defense. Sarah S took it upon herself as Captain to mug Cranford's player right back, and she roughly -- but cleanly-- dispossessed Cranford's #7 several times in the final 40 minutes of the match. In fact, the defenders-- Sarah, Kelly, Dikha, Annie, Ali and Sam C essentially suffocated the home team in the second half, allowing Cranford only four shots on goal after the intermission. Hearts outshot the losing side 28-9 overall.
Since we are in a 10-team flight, our Week J opponent is not set. That means next Sunday's game, against Scotch Plains-Fanwood, could turn out to be Hearts' final home game of the Spring 2011 season.

Not a very good turnout. It’s a bit exasperating when several players “no call/no show”  Some girls simply did not show up while on the other hand, as has happened several times each Spring, the Metuchen softball players came from their game to practice in their softball uniforms because they appreciate the need to practice. Thanks to those like Amy and Diva who let me know they would not be there in advance.

WE HAVE A SCRIMMAGE AT 6:00 PM FRIDAY AT HOOVER. WHILE SOME GIRLS MIGHT BE LATE COMING FROM SOFTBALL, I HAVE ONLY HAD ONE PLAYER SAY SHE CAN’T MAKE IT. I EXPECT EVERYONE TO BE THERE FRIDAY. THIS SEASON IS ALREADY WINDING DOWN AND IF WE’RE GOING TO HAVE ANY CHANCE TO FINISH ON TOP OF THE FLIGHT, GIRLS NEED TO PRACTICE AND PREPARE. We are away Sunday but Hearts should be able to defeat Cranford even on their field .

4/18/11

Another Wednesday with iffy weather. We’ve been lucky so far to get practices in. Maybe this Wednesday again.

I will be away for work on Wednesday the 11th and 18th of May.

We need to have a parent at practice, for the whole practice, both evenings. Please let me know if you can cover.

------------------------

Hearts 1 West Orange Tigers 2

Hearts' chances to finish atop the table were dealt a blow with today's loss on the West Orange high school field. That's because Edison is probably the only team in our flight to have played all six games to this point, leaving us less of a chance to catch up.
With a roster depleted by absences, and with Hannah, after a valiant effort, finding she could not play through a lower back injury, Hearts nonetheless put forth a strong effort, outshooting the home team 18-8.  Sarah  Q scored the only Edison goal when she slammed home a PK after a Tigers' handball in the box. Both Tigers' scores game on long shots following breakaways when West Orange solved our offsides trap. It would be good to see Hearts launch a few more shots with their first touch. The Tigers' keeper demonstrated a knack for jumping high to compenate for being shorter than most keepers, and she made a difference with a number of leaping saves.

NO GAME SUNDAY April 24th
Next game AWAY AT CRANFORD.

NO SCRIMMAGE FRIDAY, WE WILL DO IT ANOTHER TIME

Once again, a couple “no call/no shows” but most players who could not make practice gave notice.

The girls who were there worked very hard, ending with a 4 v 4 with 1 “neutral” player half-field scrimmage that went the full 35 mins of a half of a game non-stop.

SUNDAY’S GAME AT WEST ORANGE 11:30 AM (Turf field so we’ll play even if it rains Saturday night).  Arrive by 11:00 AM

4/10/11
HEARTS 4 Watchung Storm 1

"What a difference a day makes, 24 little hours" (actually 19 since last evening) as Hearts roared back from a disappointing Monroe Tournament to dominate Watchung in regular season action. Our normal strategy is that if we can take 20 shots, we have a chance to win. Hearts took 21 shots. In the second half alone! Watchung was never in the game as Edison poured it on from the opening kick off. Our other goal was to get increased scoring by the Midfield to supplement the forwards, and amidst a barrage of almost 40 shots, Hearts got plenty of scoring from the Mids. Nidhi scored her first goal of the day on an assist from Sam S, and later scored a second time on a pass by Hannah. Hearts leading scorer also scored with an assist from Diva.  Sam S put the game ice when she kicked in a rebound to put Edison up 4-1. In fact all three Samanthas were big parts of today's game, as Sam C filled in for Kelly at Center Defender, as well as making a couple near-miss attempted assists while playing Midfield. Sam spent most of the game away from her normal Fullback post and played well wherever she was asked to go in. Sarah and Radhika both made some strong blocks on defense to stop shots from getting near Alexa, who made some nice saves when the Storm's size and speed allowed them to get a breakaway, really the only way they had any attacks. Annie and Krishna, who  each played well in Monroe, picked up where they left off with equal aplomb in today's contest.
Probably the best comment on today's game came from the Watchung coach, who was overheard on the sidelines saying to one of his subs, "I've never seen a team play so aggressively."   The other nice compliment came from the Assistant Ref on the players' side, who said to me, "Your girls run the offsides' trap better than a lot of high school varsity teams do." Today's game was easily our best this Spring season, and success in our early home games has Hearts at 3-1-1 five games in. Hearts was also part of a big day for EUSA girls, as the U19 Renegades won their game 1-0 and the U13 Cyclones triumphed 3-0  all at TEP in Week E.
Hopefully we can carry today's enthusiasm with us to West Orange for next week's away game before the break.

Monroe (bless their hearts – pun intended) tied Carteret yesterday, so Hearts are alone in first place; however, Carteret has played one less game.

---------------------------
Hearts 2, West Windsor-Plainsboro  Xplosion 2

Hearts was unlucky to get only one point when they travelled to Grover's Mill,NJ, site of the Martian invasion in Orson Welles' War of the Worlds broadcast.
Hearts played a dreadful first half against what should have been an overmatched WWP side that only had 12 players. How dreadful? Edison allowed a team which netted only six goals in ten games in the Fall, 2010 season, to hang two goals on Hearts, and it could have easily been three goals had Ali not made a terrific save, dashing to turn aside a shot headed for the far post. While we strive to take 20 shots a game, minimum, Edison took just four in the first half, playing back on their heals.
Then as has become all too common, Hearts roared out and played most of the second half deep in the Xplosion's end, outshooting WWP 14-3 and completely dominating the home team. Nidhi and Amy had outstanding second half efforts in Midfield, with Amy setting up Hannah for the first Hearts goal and then Diva, who made it 2-2. The game seemed to end early, as I had five minutes left on my watch (the WWP coach believed there were 3 minutes left) when I sent out our last set of subs, but the match was whistled over almost as soon as the girls went back out. Some parents commented that if we had ten more minutes we could have won, but the fact is we should have been the team up 2-0 at the half.  One of our major problems continues to be a complete lack of scoring from our Mids. The four girls who play most of the minutes at forward have accounted for 82% of Hearts goals 2010-11. I told the girls we don't want to forwards to score less, we want the Mids to score in addition to the front line.

Edison's proclivity for slow starts will be put to the test Saturday. The format for the Monroe tournament is this: teams are grouped together in fours. The winners of the first match play each other for 1st place in the second game. We won't win a trophy if we follow a lackluster first match by steamrolling our opponents in the second game. No schedule was posted for Saturday as on 7:30 Sunday.

3/28/11
HEARTS 2, New Providence Nitro 1

The first half was, in a word, lackluster. On Saturday, Hearts won a "friendly" 2-0 over the Intercounty Angels but the girls seemed content to casually control that game without pouring it on. The first half of the regular season game Sunday was a bit too much like Saturday. New Providence was outshot 5-11 but went to the half up on Edison after scoring a truly bizarre goal late in the half as the ball rolled in while Hearts just watched, looking for all the world like baseball outfielders watching  a fly ball fall between them.
Fortunately, being down seemed to rouse Hearts. Sarah Q scored off a corner kick to tie the score, the first time this year we converted on that sort of set piece. For the second straight game, Hannah scored the second, and ultimately winning goal. However, the real story of the second half was Hearts playing fully to their capabilities. New Providence did not manage a single shot on goal in the second half, as the whole Hearts team attacked, attacked and attacked some more. Hearts over the course of the game outshot the Nitro 23-5. The only times Alexa handled the ball in the second half happened when she either came out beyond the 18 to boom clearing kicks from the back, or when she leisurely picked up a loose ball within the penalty area so she could punt it away. New Providence falls to 0-1-1 on the season with this loss, while Hearts are 2-1.

Practice WEDNESDAY with Katie at Herber Hoover 6 PM

We are about to embark on a busy week. Between April 3rd and April 10th we play four games in eight days (next Sunday at West Windsor/Plainsboro, then two games Saturday 4/9 at Monroe Tournament, and our third home game on Sunday the 10th vs Watchung Hills) Between games, tournaments and scrimmages, we'll have plenty of playing time by Sunday the 10th, which should help us as we move to the part of our regular season schedule mostly played away.

---------------------

Sunday 4/10/2011 at 1:00 PM at TEP Field 2

This Sunday AT West Windsor --  BLUE SHIRTS AND WHITE SOCKS. I don’t have a location or game time yet. WWP is about 45 minutes away, it’s also where the Tournament is June 4th and 5th.

Schedule for Saturday the 9th should be available this Saturday the 2nd

Great 2nd half yesterday by every Hearts player.

3/23/11

Well with the snow, NO PRACTICE TODAY March 23rd !

Practice at Hoover Friday 6pm to 730

Will let you know by Friday if we have a scrimmage or just practice Saturday.

3/22/11

If we miss practice with Katie on Wednesday we WILL practice Friday evening at 6 – but let’s hope we get practice in when we’re supposed to!

3/20/11
Hearts 2  Monroe Power 1

We believe that if we take more than 20 shots in a game, Hearts is likely to prevail. Beyond the fact Edison took 21 shots against Monroe, what was most encouraging was the nature of many shots. After Hannah put Hearts up 1-0 on an assist from Sarah Q, there were a number of strong shots. In particular Sam S launched a hard attempt from about 28 yards out that bounced off the near post but was well struck and on target with her first touch. AC had  at least two long shots in the second half that went over the crossbar but were also blasted aggressively. Monroe tied the game in the second half with a bit of luck. Alexa came out with a strong challenge, cutting off the angle, but the Monroe player went for the far post and scored. We encourage Lexa to take the risk coming out hard and while today our opponents scored, over time such challenges are the right choice. Hannah made a long run up the left side and scored what would prove to be the winning goal, giving her 9 in the 2010-11 year.
The girls seemed much more focused and intense -- often the players on the bench were standing and cheering on their teammates.

Practice Wednesday 6 pm with Katie. Please watch email because there may be rain and we will hope for a repeat of this past week where the rain ended early and we got practice in.

Saturday we may scrimmage in lieu of practice. More info on that to follow; if we do, we'd wear BLUE SHIRTS SATURDAY.

3/18/11
Got a message from Sky Blue expressing "concern" about the number of players at practice as well as the fact some arrived late and some left early.
I would prefer girls come for an hour, either getting there late or leaving early, then not come at all. On the other hand, as you long time EUSA parents know, the portion  of training costs paid by the Club is contingent upon 75% participation with the professional trainer. I would ask that everyone tries to make getting to practice a priority, knowing that on any given week, we will have girls who are ill, injured, or who havve other commitments. Thanks.

3/14/11

The weather forecast calls for showers to end Wednesday afternoon. This should allow us to get in practice Wednesday starting at 6pm at Herbert Hoover.

KATIE McLOUGHLIN comes to us from the English Football Association(FA). As I told the girls, her British accent will make everything she says sound better and smarter than if I say it LOL. Katie played for Leicester, who play other top-level women’s sides such as Liverpool and Arsenal women. She has played against the Republic of Ireland women’s side while being scouted for the England national team. She has coached for Leicester City Centre of Excellence, their youth development program, from U8 to U14. Katie came up through Leicester’s program from U9 through U16 herself. She has excellent coaching credentials from England’s FA, arguably the top level of soccer competition in the world. We’re very excited to have someone as qualified as Katie training us this season.

3/13/11
Hearts 1 Carteret Rebels 3

Sarah scored her 8th goal of the 2010-11 year off a pass from Nidhi. Hearts led 1-0 at the half, having dominated play and held Carteret to two shots on goal. Carteret scored three goals in the second half, winning easily although outshot 9-15 by the visitors from Edison.

(Instead of the normal game recap, here is essentially what I told the girls after the game)

"It is exasperating to have you repeat the same mistakes over and over again that we work so hard on in practice. We went over why we need to head the ball more, yet time and again we had girls with their foot as high as their chin taking a ball coming in over their head with a foot; we say we want the outer Midfielders to play close to the line, back facing off the field, yet we keep seeing Midfielders clogging up the middle; we said we need to shoot more aggressively but time and time again we seem to take two or three touches before we shoot. Late in the game a Rebels' back launched a high shot from 30 yards out. When do we ever do that??
"I told you before the game, and I told you at halftime, the longer we let a weaker team stay in the game, the more they believe they can win. I warned you at the half that we wanted to get up 2-0 or 3-0 quickly. This team came up from the Flight below us-- what will we do against teams that played in flights above us who were relegated to our group if we can't beat Carteret?
"I'm tired of watching you lose to teams that we're better than. I've tried to tell you that when you get to high school, if you go out and play like you're in a fog, or in a lackluster, unaggressive way, you'll be yanked and put on the bench, maybe sent back to JV.
"At some point you need to learn to play angry, to react with pride and anger when a lesser teams gets out in front. You need to play like winning means something to you, like you want to win. I know most of your high school coaches. They are not going to play you if you can't step it up when the time comes.
"I can't even say, 'good effort' today. It wasn't a good effort. We should have won today 4-1 or 4-0. I keep waiting for most of you to get an edge. And if you can't get one for me, I hope you get one before you start playing high school soccer."

PRACTICE WITH KATIE WEDNESDAY AT HERBERT HOOVER. PRACTICE SATURDAY. Hopefully we can get both in, we need it.

3/8/11
WE ARE CONFIRMED TO PLAY IN THE MONROE "Kickoff Classic" SATURDAY APRIl 9th 2011
We have a home game vs Watchung Hills on Sunday 4/10.

Three games that weekend!

3/7/11

Need to make initial payment to Sky Blue trainer within a week, only
have eight checks so far!!

Also we need a SAGE person to attend that meeting (see earlier email). Sue Trujillo, Dan Bradley, Coach Mark, and I won't count even if we go!
$100 fine against the team if we don't have a rep there. Then we don't have to go back in the Fall if the girls continue at U16 next season.

-----------------------------------------------------

HEARTS 1, Hazlet Pride 1 (Indoors finale)

The best thing about our final game indoors was the fact that Hearts was all over Hazlet from the opening kick off. Unlike last week’s semi-final, when Hearts came out flat and allowed BOM to take five shots in the first two minutes (all saved by Alexa), this time Edison swarmed the other team and kept the pressure up all game. Annie, Amy, and Krishna were all especially effective both on attack and on defense. Amy especially was all over the place from Center Mid. AC put Hearts up 1-0 off an assist from Sarah.

On the other hand, the not-so-good thing was Hearts’ recurrent tendency to allow lesser teams to stay in the game. The longer Hazlet stayed within one goal, the more they sensed they might pull the game out. We’ve shown a bad habit of allowing teams to manage a goal out of a small number of shots that gives us a tie (ten ties in regular season, tournament and indoors since March, 2010) rather than a win. Part of playing more aggressively is knowing that if you can put a weaker team in a hole with a two- or three-goal lead, they will get discouraged. Add this to the list of things we want to accomplish on a team/tactical level this season.

Hearts finished (counting playoffs) at 4-4-3, tied with Sayreville who went 4-3-3. Any chance that BOM might say Hearts deserved the second place trophy went out the window when we couldn’t put Hazlet away yesterday. L

That brings me to the issue of SAGE. I don’t recall that anyone attended the SAGE meetings in the Fall. If not we have to have someone go and it CANNOT be Dan Bradley, Coach Mark or I. Please see info below about attending a SAGE meeting nearby soon (and if you went in the Fall, Dan, please let me know.

MNJYSA schedules season meetings to discuss the leagues sportsmanship policies and expectations. Each team is expected to have representation in attendance. MNJYSA encourages all members of a respective team to attend these mandated meetings; in the interest of education and management of sportsmanship.  Failure to attend may be cause for sanctions and/or fines.

Currently arranged meeting dates and venues are detailed below. The schedule below will be constantly updated on the Home Page of the MNJYSA web site as the meetings are arranged and posted, so check the web site regularly. There will be one meeting per MNJYSA Region, and you are encouraged to attend the meeting that pertains to your region, however if it is more convenient to attend another Region’s meeting because of the date/location, feel free to register for that meeting.

We strongly encourage you to pre-register your confirmed seats by sending an e mail to kevindearman@comcast.net  listing the date and location of the meeting you wish to attend, and the # of people attending. You will also need to download and print a copy of the attendance sheet (that you can find at the bottom of the announcement on the Home Page of the MNJYSA web site) for EACH person attending, and bring it with you on the night as this will be your proof of attendance.

We will accept walk-ons on the night, however venues are strictly limited by fire/insurance/facility regulations to the maximum #’s below, and priority seating will be given to those pre registered, with walk-ons welcomed up to the maximum attendance number at the facility.

Some important points to remember … please read each bullet point carefully:-

-          Attendance on behalf of EVERY team is mandatory by AT LEAST ONE adult team member (coach, asst. coach, sage representative, team parent) at least ONCE per seasonal year. Attendance is strictly monitored, and failure to attend may be cause for sanctions and/or fines.

-          If an adult team member (coach, asst. coach, sage representative, team parent) has attended a SAGE meeting in fall 2010, spring 2010, Fall 2009 or spring 2009 their team will not be given credit if that person attends one of the spring 2011 meetings. Of course they are welcome to attend, but someone else from the team (who has not attended a SAGE meeting during any of the past 4 seasons) MUST attend as well in order for the team to be given attendance credit this season.

2/22/11
There has been a change in the Playoff schedule

WE WILL PLAY BOM/BLUE at 12:00 noon on Sunday the 27th at Tab Ramos. BLUE SHIRTS AND BLUE SOCKS.
This is the 2nd place team vs 3rd place team game.

Only girls who have played three games or more can play this Sunday. Hopefully ALL who are eligible to play can attend. Essentially every Indoors player can play except Sana and Hannah.

New Playoff format is
11:15 Sunday        4th place team vs 5th place team
12 noon Sunday    Battle of Monmouth (Blue) vs FC Hearts
12:45 Sunday       Battle of Monmouth (white) vs Winner of 11:15 game

FINAL Sunday March 6th  Winner of 12 noon game 2/27 vs Winner of 12:45 game 2/27

2/21/11
Hearts 3-3 draw (end of regular season)

Having a full roster apparently threw the girls off somewhat. Hearts went up 1-0 when Hannah scored on an assist from Krishna, but then Edison allowed the last-place team to put in three unanswered goals.  It looked very bad for Hearts but in the space of 70 seconds with about ten minutes left, we caught up, as Hannah scored on a breakaway and then Dikha headed in Hannah's corner kick to knot things up. A bad break (not the first time we've said that about this ref) when a fourth Edison goal was waved off. A courageous comeback but far short of what we need to do this coming weekend. That kind of lackluster effort for 10-15 minutes of the game won't work in the playoffs.

 PLAYOFF PREVIEW (Round 1)
EDISON FC Hearts vs SAYREVILLE (WHITE SHIRTS AND WHITE SOCKS!)
On paper, a winnable game. Hearts is clearly the better team; however, what makes Sayreville dangerous in the playoffs is their defense. They have several ties, including Sunday's 0-0 draw with Battle of Monmouth. They play to tie, and with a good keeper, take their chances on PK's in a shootout. This is not what we want to do. In a PK shootout, a slight miscalculation by either keeper can be a problem. However, the larger issue is just the emotions of 8th graders. We have some girls who'll jump at the chance to take PK's. On the other hand, if we go to a shootout, we have some girls who will make themselves into nervous wrecks, and if we absolutely need to convert one kick to stay in the game, there are girls who simply will put too much pressure on themselves at that point to succeed. They are 13, not 23. Thus, the key is for the girls to come out fast, play aggressively, take shots, and hopefully get up 2-0 on a team that has yet to score more than one goal in an Indoors game this Winter. It's simple: if the girls want a trophy, we need to win Sunday!

2/13/11
Hearts 1 Battle of Monmouth 2

Three words about this week's game: NOT ENOUGH SUBS. What proved to be the winning goal came late in the game as BOM got numbers back running past a tiring Hearts team.  That's what happens when we have a single sub playing a team with five. When you're winded, and wondering when you'll get your two minutes on the bench, it's dispiriting to look up and see a bunch of rested opponents pouring out on the field.
It was an unsatisfactory ending to a game where Alexa played her best game in goal of the Indoors season, perfectly making saves while coming out an attacking the BOM forwards. Hearts' goal came when Diva dispossessed a BOM defender inside the penalty area and passed back to AC who slammed the ball into the back of the net. Hearts came up short when our final shot clipped  the post allowing their keeper to make the save that staved off a tie.
Next week is a regular season game. Any player on the Hearts roster can play even if they've not played this season. Even one extra player might have made a difference. Once the playoffs start, only those who have played three games Indoors can play.  While we have players with heavy basketball commitments and a couple girls who are hurt, we hope at least one or two more players can come out for next week's game and perhaps allowing us to finish the regular season in 2nd place heading into the playoffs.

MARCH 6th FINALS TBA

2/7/11

In spite of how it looks outside, the Spring season is scheduled to start soon.

That means it’s time to plan on training and tournaments.

The additional cost per player for the Spring is $57 per player. Looking to get that by March 11, 2011 when we have to give a deposit to Sky Blue.

We will probably play a one-day Saturday tournament in Monroe in April.

The question is: what two day Tournament will we play in?  Some girls have expressed a keen interest in going away to a tournament. If we did that, we would be playing (and traveling) over Memorial Day Weekend. Please let me know immediately if Memorial Day is no good because if we only have 11 or 12 players, we can’t play a 2-day tournament. Given the girls’ high school coaches may not let Hearts stay together in the Fall of 2011, I hope everyone will consider foregoing traditional Memorial Day plans for one (possibly) last team event.

As a fallback, if we aren’t going away we will probably play SUNBURST in West Windsor-Plainsboro June 4th and 5th.

2/6/11
HEARTS 3-2 Super Bowl Sunday

A number of positive aspects in today's game. All three goals were noteworthy. Diva started off the scoring. For the third time this year (counting indoors and outdoors), she put in a rebound of her own shot, making the keeper pay for not making a secure save. The goal occured less than a minute after the Pride scored to put Hearts down 0-1. Her second goal of the game (and 6th in seven indoor games) came after Diva made a quick dash through the defense and launched a shot when she got in the clear. The winning goal came about as the result of a textbook play: deep in Hearts' end, Krishna fired a throw-in to AC who took the ball up the right sideline and finished her run with her third Indoors goal as Hearts went to 4-2-1 with two games left in the regular season. Besides the goals, Hearts made a number of smart back passes to Krishna, Lauren and Annie which resulted in good shots that were saved or went over the cross bar.

1/30/11
Hearts 1, Battle of Monmouth (White) 2

Hearts slipped from first and an "own goal" was a factor. The most unlucky sort of own goal, as the BOM player made a poor kick and when the Hearts defender jumped to stop what looked like it would be a high shot to the far post, the weak kick instead ricocheted off the defender and went in past Alexa at an odd angle.  Otherwise, the teams battled evenly 1-1. Diva, our Indoors scoring leader, put Edison up 1-0 with her 4th goal of the season off a beautiful pass from Lauren.  Hearts again played aggressively, with Annie and Krishna slamming long shots that narrowly missed, but when BOM scored with 11 minutes to go, Hearts could not find a way to equalize the game. Battle of Monmouth BLUE started today 1 point behind Edison, but with a game in hand. If they won, they would move ahead with three games before the playoffs.

EARLY game next Sunday.

BTW the professional FC Hearts won yesterday, playing outdoors. In Scotland!

1/23/11
HEARTS 2, Hazlet Pride 0

Some say, "the best defense is a good offense" and the first-place Hearts seemed to embrace this notion today. For the second straight game, Edison bombarded an opposing keeper with over 20 shots. The game could easily have been a much bigger rout as two balls clanked off the side posts and four or five others went just over the crossbar. Diva started Edison off with her 3rd goal of the indoor season, scoring on an assist by AC. Within three minutes, AC put Hearts up by two, putting in her 2nd goal indoors off a rebound of her own shot. The unrelenting offensive pressure meant Alexa had to make fewer saves as she held Hazlet scoreless for the second time this season. In fact, Annie led a defense which generally held the Pride out, freeing Lexa to roam oustide the penalty area and send long clearing passes up the sides.

1/16/11
Hearts 3, Hazlet 1
Hearts got off to a good start in today's "doubleheader." Amy started the scoring with her second goal of the indoors season to put Edison up 1-0. Soon after, Diva drove home a rebound of her own shot, and her second indoor goal made it 2-0. Lyla made it 3-0 when she converted on a pass from Amy. Ultimately Hazlet got on the board but Hearts were never seriously threatened.

Hearts 1, Sayreville 1
Edison came close to being victimized by a red-hot keeper in today's second game. Normally our aim is to get more than 20 shots in 70 minutes outdoors but Hearts found themselves stonewalled by a keeper who endured 23 shots in only 40 minutes. Every Hearts player took at least one try at the goal but the big Sayreville goalie made save after save. With 4:39 left to play, AC put in a pass from Amy to tie the game and Edison had to be content with a draw. Just one of those soccer games where most of the game is played in one team's end but strong play in the goal kept them in it. Hearts moved into second place (with 7 pts to Battle of Monmouth/Blue's 9) after four games.

1/15/11
Just wanted to let you know we did NOT get a forfeit for Sunday the 9th

When the Winter league was set up for 5 v 5 (4 players + keeper), Battle of Monmouth was to have two 7-player teams with a shared keeper.
When Tab Ramos decided to let U14 girls play the high school field and format, BOM Patriots was given permission to play two teams sharing their 2010-11 roster. They apologized for not communicating this fact to either Hearts or Hazlet.
So, we move on, hopefully to get a couple wins tomorrow on our "doubleheader" day
As a Jets fan, you can imagine how thrilled I am that BOM's real team name is Patriots LOL

Just a reminder, try to get there at least 15 minutes early so you can find parking and the girls can be ready. WHITE SHIRTS BLUE SOCKS AGAIN THIS WEEK

The Tab Ramos rules state that only a goalkeeper can play for more than one team. I’m looking for someone to keep track of the Battle of Monmouth players names and numbers so that we don’t have to play a “stacked” team if we are in the playoffs. I know we’ll all recall that very large girl that kept fouling Allie but I am suspicious that BOM may shuffle their teams if one is higher in the standings when the playoffs start. I don’t want to have to play a combined squad of the best BOM girls if we end up playing  for 1st or 2nd place.

1/3/11

HEARTS 2 Battle of Monmouth (White Squad) 0

A good start for Hearts especially since moving to indoors has traditionally been a challenging transition. In fact, there were some adjustments. Not having to give up the normal 10 yard "cushion" on free kicks meant Hearts' set piece plays were not as successful as usual. Bottom line was the victory. Amy and Diva scored and Sana went the whole way in goal to secure the shutout. With five field players, everyone has an important defensive role, but noteworthy were the efforts of Annie, who played a strong game at the Sweeper position, playing in the center and not as a marking Back, and Lyla, who showed terrific instincts covering the field on defense and then transitioning back into her position on the attack.

12/30/10
Just to be on the safe side, WEAR WHITE but BRING BLUE jerseys because BOM wears the same colors.

12/29/10

We are scheduled to play 5 v 5 PLUS a keeper on the full length field! PLEASE TRY TO PLAY SOME IF YOU CAN!!

------------------------------
THIS SUNDAY OUR GAME IS AT 11:15 AM (arrive by 11). I realize this poses a hardship for some, please let me know if you cannot play this Sunday (full schedule will be sent later today).
IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT THIS WEEK TO HAVE EXTRA PLAYERS WHO CAN MAKE AN 11:15 START!!
FOR CARDED EUSA PLAYERS (not signed up for the whole indoor season), IT'S $10 which goes to the referee fees. IF YOU ARE NOT ON THE HEARTS MNJYSA ROSTER, YOU MUST COME EARLY AND GET A TEMPORARY PLAYER PASS, $10 to TAB RAMOS, because of the pass cost, if you have to get a pass there would be no charge for any nonHearts players this week.
AS OF NOW, I DON'T EXPECT ANY EXTRA GIRLS WHO WOULD NEED A UNIFORM. ANY GIRLS WHO MIGHT PLAY SHOULD HAVE AN EUSA UNIFORM.

12/20/10

Our first game will be SUNDAY January 2nd 2011.

We should usually have room for additional players each week. PLEASE CONSIDER PLAYING INTERMITTENTLY if your schedule permits. I saw a preliminary flighting which bumped us up to Flight 3. That would pose a challenging schedule and if some girls have been idle all Winter, that could add to the challenge of moving up .

WHITE SHIRTS AND BLUE SOCKS Sunday 1/2/2011. I will forward our schedule as soon as it becomes available. If you are not a regular player and plan to make a specific game, please let me know in advance.

12/14/10
We will be enrolling in Tab Ramos, so your checks will be deposited this week.

As always, we will submit our team roster and girls who have not signed up for the full season may be able to play certain Sundays if we are short. Single games are $10 per player which will go to offset Ref cost.

Any Metuchen, Highland Park, or Edison U14 girls interested in playing with Hearts this Winter let me know ASAP. Girls who can pay for and play the 10 game schedule would get preference over someone who can only play one or two games. Thanks.
