NEFFA FALL 2008:
The Canes went through a tough season at various times, taking some tough losses, and won some big games. With our regular season record ending at 3-4 overall, the Canes went into the B playoffs with the #2 seed.
The Canes received a first round bye in the playoffs due to our #2 seed. In the 2nd round of the playoffs, we started out with a strong showing against a tough Relentless team, winning by the final score of 16-12. Linebacker Dave Fernandes had a huge interception return for a TD in the game while QB Chris Thomas threw for a TD. Kicker Adam Reis had 2 huge 2 point conversion kicks to chip in for the win.
In the B playoffs Championship Game, the Hurricanes faced a tough Generals Warriors squad in miserable weather, with sleet, rain, and wind. The Canes jumped out to a very quick 16-0 lead behind two Chris Thomas TD passes, one to Shaun Branco and the other to Jay Perreira. GW came back in the game and overtook the Canes for a 20-16 lead. Adam Reis then kicked about a 40 yard field goal to bring the Canes to within 1 point of GW.
GW had the ball with just about 2:20 left in the game, but the Canes had two timeouts. GW needed 10 yards for a 1st down to put the game away. GW ran the ball on 3 consecutive plays and gained a total of 7 yards, with the Canes using timeouts after two of those plays. The Generals Warriors punted the ball and the Canes started with the ball on our 30 yard line with about 1:15 left to play and no timeouts. QB Chris Thomas engineered a drive, including several QB runs to gain yardage and get out of bounds to stop the clock. Ryan Souza also had a spectacular catch to keep the drive going. On 3rd down on the GW 26, kicker Adam Reis came on to kick what would ultimately be the game-winning field goal from about 43 yards out with 23 seconds left to play! GW got the ball back, and despite a couple of penalties on the Canes' part, could not put the ball in the end zone within the alotted time and the Canes were victorious!
HURRICANES FALL 2008 MVPs:
OFFENSIVE MVP: QB CHRIS THOMAS -- Chris was asked to take over the QB reins at midseason and did a phenomenal job of helping to spark the offense and turning the season around. Chris consistently demonstrated a calm leadership about him, both in the huddle and on the field. With Chris' scrambling style and confident play-calling, the offense showed some spark and got many of his players involved on offense.
DEFENSIVE MVP: LB DAVE FERNANDES -- Dave moved to the defensive side of the ball at midseason and dedicated himself to playing at his full potential at linebacker. Dave made some huge plays down the stretch run, including a huge Pick-6 in the 2nd round of the playoffs versus Relentless.
SPECIAL TEAMS AND PLAYOFFS MVP: K ADAM REIS -- The NFL may underestimate the importance of having a good kicker, but we sure don't!! In seasons past, the Canes did not attempt to kick for two-point conversions or field goals. In the offseason between the spring and fall session, several Canes recruited Adam to come play the kicker position for us. Having the ability to kick for 2 point conversions and field goals was a huge advantage for us, as most teams do not have a reliable kicker. In the 2nd round of the playoffs, Adam's two 2 point conversion kicks were the difference in the 16-12 victory over Relentless. In the championship game vs. GW, with the Hurricanes down 20-16, Adam kicked 2 huge 35+ yard field goals, including the game-winning 43 yarder with under 1 minute remaining to win the title!
MOST IMPROVED PLAYER: OL PHIL HOWARD -- Phil was the Hurricanes' kicker and part-time DL/OL prior to the Fall 2008 session. Phil moved to the OL and struggled at times during the regular season, but also showed some significant signs of improvement as the season progressed. Phil initially had difficulty with blocking assignments on various plays, but by the end of the season was able to understand and execute assignments with muss less difficulty.
The Hurricanes are currently looking for sponsors for upcoming tournaments as well as upcoming sessions. If anyone has any questions or would like to offer support for the team, please contact Warren at 508-740-5784. You can also email the Hurricanes at fallriverhurricanes@yahoo.com.
