2009 Trenton Fire Tournament
The FireHogs traveled to Trenton Michigan to play in the Trenton Fire Tournament. This was the sixth time we have played there, and the FireHogs looked to stay undefeated for 2009. We started out by playing Flint Fire, there were 3 different players from our Copper Cup roster. It didn't take rookie Steve Bread long to make an impact on the team, scoring a hat trick in his first game and leading the FireHogs to a 4-2 victory over Flint. The second game of the day put us against Windsor PD. The game started very rough, Windsor spent most of the first period in the penalty box. The FireHogs second line capitalized on the power play scoring 2 twice and putting up all 4 goals for the FireHogs. The win moved us to the Championship game because of the 3 team division. The next game was played against Downriver Heat, a filler team because a team dropped out. We came out a played hard to stay undefeated winning 3-2. The Championship game we were against a tough Windsor PD team again. It was a tough, fasted paced game, with Windsor PD coming out on top, ending the FireHogs winning streak at 7, and giving us 2nd place again.
2009 Copper Cup
The FireHogs hockey team traveled to Grand Rapids Michigan to compete in the Copper Cup Tournament. The Tournament benefits the Special Olympics and is only open to Public Safety personnel. After nearly a two year layoff from competing in tournaments the first game against Easy 83 was a little slow going, but by the end of the game you could see the team starting to play better. The FireHogs beat Easy 83 5-2. The next team to take on the FireHogs was Muskegon. The teams were very closely matched, but the FireHogs came out on top 4-2. Jim Warner played solid in net, while the rest of the team spread the scoring around. The FireHogs killed off a 5-3 power play for Muskegon, a turning point in the game. Two hours later the FireHogs were back on the ice, this time taking on Sag-Rapids. This was a great game, the best defensive game of the tournament. The FireHogs skated to a 2-0 victory, securing a spot in the Championship game. There were several teams all tied in the standing at 2 wins and a loss. After about an hour we found out we would have a rematch against Sag-Rapids Sunday morning for the C division championship. Going into the championship the FireHogs knew it would be a close hard fought game, and it was. The team saved their best game of the tournament for the championship. Everyone played great and we were able to come out on top 3-2, and become the 2009 Copper Cup C division Champions.
TEAM HISTORY
The Summit FireHogs Hockey Club members are professional Firefighters, Law Enforcement Officers, and Paramedics from the Jackson area. Our team has a mix of hockey experience, ranging from 5 years to 30+ years. All of our team members play in various adult leagues here in Jackson. The team started play in 2003, at the Trenton Firefighters Charity Tournament, and we now play in at least 2 charity tournaments a year, to support the charities of other police and fire agencies. We continue to add tournaments and individual games each year to promote teamwork and physical fitness between our professions.
About Our Name
In the first couple of years we were known simply as Summit Fire because the organizing members worked at Summit Township Fire Department. In 2004 after fellow firefighter and team member Kevin Sherwood was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, we added his nickname "FireHogs" to our team name. The main reason we did this was to honor our friend, because he was later forced to retire from firefighting and hockey. The second reason was because it covers both professions that make up the team. Fire for the firefighters and Hogs (aka pigs) for the law enforcement officers.
About Our Logo
Our new logo was designed in 2006; it has the hog head, with a fire helmet, to represent the firefighters and handcuffs for the police officers. The number 3 on the helmet was Kevin's jersey number, which was retired when he was no longer able to play.
